RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Response evaluation criteria in solid tumors (RECIST) often fail to identify clinically meaningful response to bevacizumab-containing therapy in colorectal liver metastasis (CRLM). This study aimed to develop RECIST by combining contrast-enhanced and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS: A total of 126 patients with CRLM who underwent hepatic resection after bevacizumab-containing chemotherapy were split into initial analyses cohort (N = 42, with 76 indexed liver metastases) and validation cohort (N = 84). In lesion-based analyses, percentage decrease of arterial enhancement area and percentage increase of apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) value from baseline to post-chemotherapy were measured. Their optimal cutoff values for distinguishing pathology-confirmed major and minor response were determined. Then, the developed RECIST (D-RECIST) was established by combining functional and size-based items. Survival relevance of D-RECIST and RECIST was examined in the validation cohort. RESULTS: Percentage decrease of arterial enhancement area and increase of ADC value significantly differed between lesions of pathologic major or minor response, with optimal cutoffs of approximately 33% and 19%, respectively. Patients defined as responders by D-RECIST had a significantly longer median disease-free survival (DFS) than non-responders (p = 0.021; 12.9 versus 8.6 months). No significant difference was observed with RECIST (p = 0.524). In a Cox regression model, D-RECIST- but not RECIST-defined responses independently predicted the DFS (p = 0.034 and 0.811). CONCLUSIONS: D-RECIST-defined responses provided significant prognostic information, and thus may serve as a better response evaluation approach than RECIST in CRLM treated with bevacizumab-containing therapy. KEY POINTS: • Changes in arterial enhancement area and apparent diffusion coefficient value are associated with pathological response in colorectal liver metastases treated with bevacizumab. • The MRI-based response criteria developed by combining size-based and functional features can provide significant prognostic information.

RESUMO

Five new peptaibols, longibramides A-E (1-5) with 11 amino acid residues, were isolated from a fungus Trichoderma longibrachiatum Rifai DMG-3-1-1, which was isolated from a mushroom Clitocybe nebularis (Batsch) P. Kumm collected from coniferous forest in the subboreal area of northeast China. The structures of longibramides A-E were determined by their spectroscopic data (NMR and MS-MS spectra), their absolute configurations were determined by X-ray diffractions and Marfey's analyses. The X-ray diffractions of longibramides A, B, and the similar CD spectra of A-E showed that they all had α-helix conformations. Longibramides B and E showed moderate cytotoxicities against BV2 and MCF-7 cells and also showed some inhibitory effects against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus MRSA T144. L-trans-Hyp was not commonly found in natural peptaibols, which was the 6th or 10th amino acid residue in longibramides C-E. The X-ray diffractions of longibramides A and B afforded the accuracy conformations of their secondary structures, which maybe help to interpret the structure-activity relationships of the family of peptaibols in the future.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To analyze our experience with clinical features and endovascular treatment of visceral artery pseudoaneurysms (VAPAs). METHODS: We performed endovascular treatments on 52 patients (34 men and 18 women) affected by VAPA. These cases were pseudoaneurysms of the celiac axis, superior mesenteric artery, and their branches. Endovascular treatments of VAPA using isolation techniques were performed after failure of conservative treatments. Follow-up was carried out via assessment of contrast-enhanced computed tomography or computed tomography angiography images. RESULTS: The initial technical success rate of endovascular treatment is 100% with only 4 patients rebled during 2-week follow-up. One patient among no rebleeding died of multisystem organ failure 28 days after intervention; thus, 30-day mortality rate was 1.9%. Four patients (7.7%) required secondary interventions because of rebleeding and were successfully treated by reintervention; however, one of the patients died from uncontrolled sepsis 39 days after reintervention. Postembolization syndrome developed in 3 patients (5.8%); one of these patients underwent splenectomy. During follow-up, no change of hepatic function was observed, no bowel ischemia was reported, and VAPA remained absent in all patients. CONCLUSIONS: Endovascular management is minimally invasive and highly successful in treating VAPA. It is particularly useful in poor surgical candidates.

RESUMO

A new iso-C14 [Val2, Val7] surfactin isoform (1) together with eight known ones (2-9), was isolated from the culture of a mushroom derived bacterium, Bacillus halotolerans DMG-7-2. The structures of them were mainly elucidated by NMR and MS data, and the NMR data of 5 also was reported for the first time. The absolute configuration of 1 was determined by Marfey's analysis (for amino acid residues) and the 13C NMR calculation of the two plausible epimers of 1 (for fatty acid). Compounds 1-9 showed moderate cytotoxicity against two human cancer cell lines (A549, MCF-7) and mice microglial BV2 cells, the IC50 values ranged from 8.91 to 33.00 µM, and the IC50 values of the positive control 5-FU were 99.94, 71.49 and 0.12 µM, respectively.[Formula: see text].

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Apatinib is a novel inhibitor of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2. The goal of this study was to evaluate overall survival (OS) after a combination of transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) and apatinib in patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and to identify the factors affecting patient survival. METHODS: Fifty-one patients with advanced HCC who received TACE in combination with apatinib in our hospital from June 2015 to May 2017 were enrolled. The OS and progression-free survival (PFS) were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method. The log-rank test and Cox regression model were used to determine the factors affecting OS. RESULTS: The median OS and PFS of the patients were 15 months and 10 months, respectively. The 1-, 2-, and 3-year survival rates were 64.7%, 23.5%, and 1.8%, respectively. Univariate survival analysis showed that patients with Child-Pugh A (P=0.006), reduction rate of proper hepatic artery (P=0.016), hand-foot syndrome (P=0.005), secondary hypertension (P=0.050), and without ascites (P=0.010) had a better OS. Multivariate analysis showed that hand-foot syndrome (P=0.014), secondary hypertension (P=0.017), and reduction rate of proper hepatic artery (P=0.025) were independent predictors of better OS. CONCLUSION: TACE combined with apatinib is a promising treatment for advanced HCC. Hand-foot syndrome, secondary hypertension, and the reduction rate of proper hepatic artery were associated with a better OS.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Accuracy of preoperative T-staging for colon cancer remains disappointing and may potentially influenced by patients' individual characteristics including visceral adipose tissue (VAT). We sought to clarify the impact of VAT on the accuracy of T-staging by CT. METHODS: This study of 216 consecutive patients who underwent elective surgery was conducted in a single cancer center, to control other potentially confounding factors. Patients were divided into accurate- and mis-staging groups according to the comparison between preoperative CT-defined (cT) and postoperative pathologic T-stages (pT). Patients' individual characteristics, including CT-based VAT at L2/L3 level, age, sex, body mass index (BMI), tumor location, present of bowel obstruction and pathologic subtype, were compared between the two groups. Association between VAT and mis-staging was assessed using multivariate logistic regression to adjust for confounders. RESULTS: Of the 216 patients, 84 (39%) were mis-staged by CT. The mean VAT in accurate-staging group was significantly higher than that in mis-staging group (146.8 ±â€¯66.1 cm2 vs 98.1 ±â€¯44.7 cm2, P < 0.001), with an optimal cutoff point of 122 cm2 for predicting mis-staging. After partial adjustment, a lower VAT (< 122 cm2, P < 0.001) and proximal location of tumor (P = 0.004) were independent factors associated with higher probability of mis-staging. Compared to VAT ≥ 122 cm2 as the reference, VAT < 122 cm2 exhibited an odds ratio of 2.701 (95% confidence intervals [CI], 1.618-3.907) for the probability of mis-staging. CONCLUSION: A lower-VAT is associated with an increased probability of inaccurate clinical T-staging in colon cancer.

RESUMO

Thermal ablation in combination with transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) has been reported to exert a more powerful antitumor effect than thermal ablation alone in hepatocellular carcinoma patients. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate whether sublethal hyperthermia encountered in the periablation zone during thermal ablation enhances the anticancer activity of doxorubicin in chronically hypoxic (encountered in the tumor area after TACE) liver cancer cells and to explore the underlying mechanisms. In the present study, HepG2 cells precultured under chronic hypoxic conditions (1% oxygen) were treated in a 42°C water bath for 15 or 30 min, followed by incubation with doxorubicin. Assays were then performed to determine intracellular uptake of doxorubicin, cell viability, apoptosis, cell cycle, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), reactive oxygen species (ROS), and total antioxidant capacity. The results confirmed that sublethal hyperthermia enhanced the intracellular uptake of doxorubicin into hypoxic HepG2 cells. Hyperthermia combined with doxorubicin led to a greater inhibition of cell viability and increased apoptosis in hypoxic HepG2 cells as compared with hyperthermia or doxorubicin alone. In addition, the combination induced apoptosis by increasing ROS and causing disruption of MMP. Pretreatment with the ROS scavenger N-acetyl cysteine significantly inhibited the apoptotic response, suggesting that cell death is ROS-dependent. These findings suggested that sublethal hyperthermia enhances the anticancer activity of doxorubicin in hypoxic HepG2 cells via a ROS-dependent mechanism.

RESUMO

RATIONALE: Cervical spondylotic radiculopathy (CSR) is a common sensory, motor, and reflex disorder. Numbness, a common subjective symptom of CSR, lacks objective quantitative indicators and recognized effective treatments, but is also difficult to recover from. We present a case report describing a traditional acupuncture treatment for CSR, utilizing a special acupuncture method and point, namely the Yunmen point. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 40-year-old woman presented with unilateral arm numbness caused by CSR. DIAGNOSES: A diagnosis of CSR was made in the orthopedic department of a local hospital. INTERVENTIONS: We attempted acupuncture at the Yunmen (LU 2) acupoint combined with neck-seven-acupoint under computed tomographic guidance. OUTCOMES: After 10 times treatment sessions, the patient no longer experienced weakness, coldness, or numbness in the affected upper limb. In addition, the stiffness in the neck and shoulders was reduced. On physical examination, the patient's left brachial plexus traction test was negative; reassessment of the CSR-20-point score scale showed a perfect score, and the visual analog scale score was 0. LESSONS: Our report indicates that acupuncture at the LU 2 acupoint combined with neck-seven-acupoint is effective in treating numbness and coldness of the arm, and other neurological symptoms caused by cervical spondylosis. Moreover, with the appropriate acupuncture technique, the risk of acupuncture at the LU 2 acupoint can be minimized.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To summarize and compare the short-term and long-term clinical efficacy of percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTBD) and percutaneous transhepatic biliary stent (PTBS) in the treatment of malignant obstructive jaundice. METHODS: 210 cases of malignant obstructive jaundice underwent interventional therapy, of which 161 cases of drainage catheters placement and 49 cases of metallic stent implantation. Follow-up information was obtained through telephone review or check-up records. RESULTS: The technical success rate of technique was 100%. At 3 - 5 days after treatment, the serum total bilirubin in 15 metallic stent-treated patients was decreased by (178.04 +/- 42.32) micromol/L, and direct bilirubin by (83.97 +/- 23.63) micromol/L. Compared with those of 28 cases treated with drainage catheters: (95.67 +/- 34.28) micromol/L and (49.84 +/- 28.21) micromol/L, there were statistically significant differences between the two groups (P = 0.017 and P = 0.035). At 6 - 9 days after treatment, the serum total bilirubin in 28 cases of metallic stent group was decreased by (188.22 +/- 79.90) micromol/L, and that in 126 cases of drainage catheter group decreased by (141.39 +/- 65.32) micromol/L. The difference was statistically significant (P = 0.014). But the decline value of direct bilirubin had no significant difference. The median patency period and the median survival time of the drainage catheter group were 60 and 148 days, respectively, those of metallic stent group were 197 days and 245 days. There were statistically significant differences between the two groups (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The results of this study indicate that the short-term and long-term efficacies of metallic stent implantation are better than those of catheter drainage technique.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy of recombinant human adenovirus p53 gene therapy (rAd-p53) in the rabbit VX2 liver cancer model using different interventional therapy approach. METHODS: Thirty New Zealand rabbits implanted with VX2 tumor in the liver were randomized into five groups with six of each. The tumor volumes (V1) were measured by MRI and CT scan 11 days after tumors implanted. The interventional therapy scheme performed as below: intraarterial 0.9% saline solution perfusion in group A, transcatheter arterial embolization with 0.5 ml ultrafluid lipiodol in group B, intraarterial rAd-p53 gene perfusion in group C (1 x 10(6)/VP); intraarterial rAd-p53 gene perfusion (1 x 10(6)/VP) in combination with transcatheter arterial embolization (ultrofluid lipiodol, 0.5 ml) in group D and intratumoral rAd-p53 gene (1 x 10(6)/VP) injection in group E. The tumor volumes (V2) were measured by MRI and CT scan, and the tumor growth ratios were calculated 14 days after interventional procedures. Then all animals were sacrificed. RESULTS: The tumor tissues were explanted for immunohistochemistry to observe the expressions of vascular endothelial cell growth factor (VEGF) and factor VIII. Microvessel density (MVD) of the tumor tissues was assessed by factor VIII immunohistochemical analysis. In addition, apoptotic index was assessed by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) staining. The tumor volumes before therapy were (79.4+/-8.2), (75.3+/-7.8), (74.6+/-6.6), (78.7+/-9.1), (75.8+/-8.4) mm(3) respectively, without differences found among them (F = 12.248, P = 0.0636). But the tumor volumes after therapy were (564.7+/-96.7), (176.5+/-83.2), (239.6+/-42.8), (159.8+/-58.6), (334.7+/-32.6) mm(3) respectively (F = 24.537, P = 0.0218). The tumor growth ratios were 6.9, 2.6, 3.1, 1.6 and 4.1 respectively. The mean apoptosis index were 12.0%+/-1.1%, 14.5%+/-2.1%, 17.6%+/-2.3%, 18.6%+/-2.3% and 19.6%+/-2.5% respectively. with significant differences in group E in comparison with the other four groups. Mean positive ratio of VEGF was 50.0%, 83.3%, 83.3%, 50.0% and 50.0% respectively, with significant differences observed in group B and group C compared with the other three groups (F = 7.84, P = 0.019). The differences of VIII factor positive expression ratio among each group were significant (F = 0.854, P = 0.018). Statistical analysis showed a positive correlation between the expression of VEGF and MVD (r = 2.400, P = 0.0233). CONCLUSION: The rAd-p53 has effective treatment outcomes in VX2 rabbit liver cancer, and intra-arterial rAd-p53 gene perfusion in combination with transcatheter arterial embolization is the best approach in comparison with intra-arterial rAd-p53 gene perfusion, transcatheter arterial embolization and intratumoral rAd-p53 gene injection alone.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: to observe the association between myocardial fibrosis, detected by delayed-enhancement (DE) cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and arrhythmia in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). METHODS: forty-eight untreated HCM patients who underwent Cine MR, DE-MRI, 24 h ambulatory Holter electrocardiogram and ECG examinations were recruited. Extent of myocardial fibrosis (fibrosis mass/total LV mass) was assessed using DE imaging. Association between arrhythmias including premature ventricular complexes (PVCS ≥ 200), supra-ventricular tachycardia (SVT), non-sustained ventricular tachycardia (NSVT), atrio-ventricular block (AVB) and intra-ventricular block (IVB) detected by Holter monitoring and ECG with regard to delayed enhancement (DE) on contrast enhanced CMR was analyzed. RESULTS: myocardial fibrosis was detected in 35 patients. Incidence of arrhythmia was significantly higher in patients with DE than in patients without DE (P < 0.05). Extent of myocardial fibrosis was significantly associated with the QRS duration (r = 0.33, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: myocardial fibrosis detected by DE-CMR was associated with arrhythmia in patients with HCM. DE-CMR might be helpful to detect high-risk HCM patients prone to arrhythmia.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To observe the imbalance of anatomical and functional innervation factors of sympathetic nerves, nerve growth factor (NGF) and leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF), in salt-sensitive hypertensive heart failure rats and to explore the effects of treatment with Guizhi Decoction () on sympathetic remodeling by inhibiting cholinergic transdifferentiation. METHODS: SS-13BN and Dahl salt-sensitive (DS) rats were divided into 3 groups: SS-13BN group (control group, n=9), DS group (model group, n=9) and GS group (Guizhi Decoction, n=9). After 10 weeks of a high-salt diet, the GS group rats were given Guizhi Decoction and other two groups were given saline at an equal volume as a vehicle. After 4 weeks' intragastric administration, rats were executed to detect the relevant indicators. Echocardiography and plasma n-terminal pro-B type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) levels were used to assess cardiac function. Noradrenaline (NA) levels in the plasma and myocardium were detected to evaluate the sympathetic function. NGF and LIF expression were detected in the myocardium by Western blot or quantitative real-time PCR. Double immunofluorescence or Western blot was used to detect tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), choline acetyltransferase (CHAT) and growth associated protein 43 (GAP43) in order to reflect anatomical and functional changes of sympathetic nerves. RESULTS: DS group had anatomical and functional deterioration of sympathetic nerves in the decompensation period of heart failure compared with SS-13BN group. Compared with the DS group, Guizhi Decoction significantly decreased the expression of LIF mRNA/protein (P<0.01), increased the expression of NGF (P<0.05 or P<0.01), enhanced the levels of TH+/GAP43+ and TH+/CHAT+ positive nerve fibers (P<0.01), and improved the protein expression of TH and GAP43 in left ventricle, but had no effect on CHAT (P>0.05). Guizhi Decoction inhibited inflammatory infiltration and collagen deposition of myocardial injury, increased the content of myocardial NA (P<0.05), reduced the plasma NA level (P<0.01), improved cardiac function (P<0.01), and improved weight and blood pressure to some extent (P<0.05), compared with DS group. CONCLUSIONS: Guizhi Decoction could inhibit cholinergic transdifferentiation of sympathetic nerves, improve the anatomical and functional denervation of sympathetic nerves, and delay the progression of decompensated heart failure. The mechanism may be associated with the correction of the imbalance of NGF and LIF.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Changes in the gut microbiota are associated with cardiovascular disease progression. Xiao-Qing-Long Tang (XQLT), a traditional herbal formula, has an anti-inflammatory effect and regulates the steady state of the immune system, which is also associated with the progression of heart failure with preserved ejection faction (HFpEF). In this study, we investigated whether XQLT could contribute to prevent the development of HFpEF and whether the modulation of the gut microbiota by this herbal formula could be involved in such effect. METHODS: The gut microbiota, SCFAs, the histology/function of the heart, and systolic blood pressure were examined to evaluate the effect of XQLT on the gut microbiota and the progression of HFpEF after oral administration of XQLT to model rats. Furthermore, we evaluated, through fecal microbiota transplantation experiments, whether the favorable effects of XQLT could be mediated by the gut microbiota. RESULTS: Oral administration of XQLT contributed to the reduction of elevated blood pressure, inflammation, and compensatory hypertrophy, features that are associated with the progression of HFpEF. The gut microbiota composition, SCFA levels, and intestinal mucosal histology were improved after treatment with XQLT. Moreover, fecal transfer from XQLT-treated rats was sufficient to prevent the progression of HFpEF. CONCLUSIONS: These data suggested that XQLT prevented the development of HFpEF in model rats by regulating the composition of the gut microbiota.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) combined with radiofrequency ablation (RFA) treatment (TAE + RFA) on the expression of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) in residual tumors and explore the relationship between the HSP70 and CD8(+) T-cell infiltrate surrounding residual tumors in the rabbit VX2 liver tumor model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Animals with VX2 liver tumors were randomized into four groups (control, TAE, RFA, and TAE + RFA) with 15 rabbits in each group. Five rabbits in each group were sacrificed on days 1, 3, and 7 after treatment. HSP70 expression and infiltration of CD8(+) T-cells in the liver and residual tumors surrounding the necrosis zone were detected by immunohistochemistry staining. The maximal diameters of tumor necrosis, numbers of metastases, and tumor growth rate were compared on day 7 after treatment. RESULTS: TAE + RFA achieved larger maximal diameter of tumor necrosis, lower tumor growth rate, and fewer metastatic lesions, compared with other treatments on day 7. The number of CD8(+) T-cells in the TAE + RFA group was significantly higher than in other groups on days 1, 3, and 7. There was a positive correlation between HSP70 expression level and infiltration of CD8(+) T-cells surrounding the residual tumor on day 1 (r=0.9782, P=0.012), day 3 (r=0.93, P=0.021), and day 7 (r=0.8934, P=0.034). CONCLUSION: In the rabbit VX2 liver tumor model, TAE + RFA activated the highest number of CD8(+) T-cells surrounding residual tumors. TAE + RFA appears to be a beneficial therapeutic modality for tumor control and antitumor immune response in this model.

RESUMO

Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) combined with radiofrequency ablation (RFA) has been reported to be effective for local control of different-sized hepatocellular carcinomas. However, it is unclear if these benefits could also be applicable to different-sized liver metastases from gastrointestinal cancers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of TACE combined with RFA for liver metastases from gastrointestinal cancers. In this study, we retrospectively analyzed clinical data of 19 consecutive patients who had a total of 26 liver metastatic lesions from gastrointestinal cancers and underwent RFA followed by first-time TACE treatment. The tumor recurrence, overall survival rate and procedure-related complications were evaluated. Moreover, patients' demographics and tumor characteristics were analyzed to determine their impact on the outcomes. The technical success of TACE plus RFA was achieved with 2 major procedure-related complications found. The mean follow-up was 21.3 months. The total 1-, 2-, and 3-year survival rate was 89.4%, 52.6%, and 35.1%, respectively. It was found that the tumor size and the ratio of enhancement area were significant factors that influenced the overall survival. In conclusion, patients with gastrointestinal cancer-derived liver metastatic lesions of smaller size and larger enhancement area are considered appropriate candidates for TACE plus RFA.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study was designed to quantitatively evaluate the immature microvascular density (MVD) of brain gliomas using the volume transfer constant (K(trans)) and volume of extravascular extracellular space per unit volume of tissue (Ve) from dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) noninvasively. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-seven patients (35 males, 22 females; age range, 14-70, mean age 46±12 years old) with brain glioma were included in this study. The maximal values of K(trans) and Ve of all patients with brain glioma (grade II 24, III 7 and IV 26) were obtained. The CD105-microvascular density (CD105-MVD) of each tumor was measured in surgical specimen. The differences of K(trans), Ve and CD105-MVD between the different grades of gliomas were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U-test. The Pearman correlation coefficient was determined between K(trans), Ve and CD105-MVD. A P-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: The differences in K(trans), Ve and CD105-MVD were statistically significant between low-grade glioma (LGG) and high-grade glioma (HGG) (P=0.001, P<0.001, P<0.001). The K(trans), Ve and CD105-MVD of grade II were significantly lower than those of grade III and IV. K(trans) and Ve were positively correlated with CD105-MVD in HGG (P<0.001, P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest DCE-MRI plays an important part in noninvasively evaluating the immature MVD of brain gliomas.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of experimental occlusal hypofunction on the architecture of rat's mandibular bone. METHODS: Forty Sprague-Dawley (SD) male rats were randomly divided into experimental occlusal hypofunction group and control group, with 20 rats in each group. Experimental occlusal hypofunction group rats were fitted with a metal cap to the maxillary and mandibular incisor, to eliminate the occlusal forces on rat molars. In control group, a metal ring was fitted to the maxillary and mandibular incisor to maintain molar occlusal contact. Then the rats were killed under deep anaesthesia at 0 week and at the end of 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks, and the mandibles were immediately removed for measurement of the three-dimensional architecture of cancellous bone in the alveolar process with micro-CT. RESULTS: At the end of week 4, the bone volume/total volume (BV/TV) in the hypofunction group decreased compared with the control group [control group:(0.65 ± 0.05)%, experimental group: (0.60 ± 0.05)%, P < 0.05] and lasted until the end of the experiment [control group: (0.72 ± 0.06)%, experimental group: (0.51 ± 0.07)%, P < 0.01]. The similar result was also observed in trabecula thickness (Tb. Th) in experimental animals [control group: (168 ± 15), (170 ± 25), (180 ± 18) µm, experimental group: (152 ± 20), (145 ± 19), (142 ± 15) µm, P < 0.05]. The trabecula spacing (Tb. Sp) in the hypofunction group increased from the end of week 4 to the end of week 8 compared with the matched control groups [control group: (264 ± 21), (284 ± 17), (282 ± 26) µm, experimental group: (306 ± 30), (316 ± 18), (332 ± 18) µm, P < 0.05]. The trabecula number (Tb.N) of experimental animals decreased from the end of week 6[control group:(3.59 ± 0.22) mm(-1), experimental group: (3.03 ± 0.31) mm(-1), P < 0.05] to the end of week 8[control group: (3.66 ± 0.24) mm(-1), experimental group: (2.85 ± 0.18) mm(-1), P < 0.01]. CONCLUSIONS: Experimental occlusal hypofunction can result in the change of mandibular alveolar process three-dimensional architecture.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To measure the spectral transmittance of Cerinate porcelain veneer and enamel in different color and different thickness. METHODS: Samples of Cerinate porcelain veneers were prepared in different thickness (0.50 mm, 0.75 mm, 1.00 mm) and different Vita shade (A1, A2, A3). Enamel samples in shade A2 were made with three thickness (0.50 mm, 0.75 mm, 1.00 mm). A spectrophotometer with spectra range (380-800 nm) was employed to measure the spectral transmittance. RESULTS: Spectral transmittance decreased with the increasing in the thickness of specimens and decreasing in the color darkness. The transmittance of Cerinate porcelain veneer material and enamel in the same color and same thickness hadn't significant difference. CONCLUSION: The key factor to spectral transmittance of porcelain veneer materials is veneer's thickness, and the color of the materials has also some influence on it. Cerinate porcelain veneers can properly recover the transparency of teeth.
