RESUMO

Human pose, defined as the spatial relationships between body parts, carries instrumental information supporting the understanding of motion and action of a person. A substantial body of previous work has identified cortical areas responsive to images of bodies and different body parts. However, the neural basis underlying the visual perception of body part relationships has received less attention. To broaden our understanding of body perception, we analyzed high-resolution fMRI responses to a wide range of poses from over 4,000 complex natural scenes. Using ground-truth annotations and an application of three-dimensional (3D) pose reconstruction algorithms, we compared similarity patterns of cortical activity with similarity patterns built from human pose models with different levels of depth availability and viewpoint dependency. Targeting the challenge of explaining variance in complex natural image responses with interpretable models, we achieved statistically significant correlations between pose models and cortical activity patterns (though performance levels are substantially lower than the noise ceiling). We found that the 3D view-independent pose model, compared with two-dimensional models, better captures the activation from distinct cortical areas, including the right posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS). These areas, together with other pose-selective regions in the LOTC, form a broader, distributed cortical network with greater view-tolerance in more anterior patches. We interpret these findings in light of the computational complexity of natural body images, the wide range of visual tasks supported by pose structures, and possible shared principles for view-invariant processing between articulated objects and ordinary, rigid objects.

It is generally believed that high-quality Bupleurum scorzonerifolium roots possess specific morphological characteristics, being red, robust, and long with strong odor. However, the scientific connotation of these characteristics has not been elucidated. According to the theory of "quality evaluation through morphological identification", we studied the correlations between appearance traits(the RGB value of root surface, root length, root diameter, dry weight, and ratio of phloem to xylem) and content of main chemical components(volatile oils, total saponins, total flavonoids, total polysaccharides, and seven saikosaponins) of B. scorzonerifolium roots. Epson Scanner and ImageJ were used to scan the root samples and measure the appearance traits. Ultraviolet spectrophotometry and HPLC were employed to determine the content of chemical components. The correlation, regression, and cluster analyses were performed to study the correlations between the appearance traits and the content of chemical components. The results showed that the content of volatile oils and saikosaponins were significantly correlated with RGB value, root length, and root diameter, indicating that within a certain range, the roots being redder, longer, and thicker had higher content of volatile oils and saikosaponins. According to the appearance traits and chemical component content, the 14 samples from different producing areas were classified into four grades, and the differences in morphological traits and chemical component content were consistent among different grades. The findings in this study demonstrate that appearance traits(RGB value, root length, and root diameter) can be used to evaluate the quality of B. scorzonerifolium roots. Meanwhile, this study lays a foundation for establishing an objective quality evaluation method for B. scorzonerifolium roots.

Neuroimaging findings suggest that the amygdala plays a primary role in both the psychopathology of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and poor sleep quality, which are common in trauma survivors. However, the neural mechanisms of these two problems in trauma survivors associated with amygdala remain unclear. In the current study, we aimed to explore the role of functional connectivity of amygdala subregions in both PTSD symptoms and poor sleep quality. A total of 94 trauma-exposed subjects were scanned on a 3T MR system using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. Both Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale scores were negatively correlated with the resting-state functional connectivity between the left basolateral amygdala-left medial prefrontal cortex and the right basolateral amygdala-right medial prefrontal cortex. Our findings suggest a shared amygdala subregional neural circuitry underlying the neuropathological mechanisms of PTSD symptoms and poor sleep quality in trauma survivors.

BACKGROUND: Traumatized earthquake survivors may develop poor memory function. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) and machine learning techniques may one day aid the clinical assessment of individual psychiatric patients. This study aims to use machine learning with Rs-fMRI from the perspectives of neurophysiology and neuroimaging to explore the association between it and the individual memory function of trauma survivors. METHODS: Rs-fMRI data was acquired for eighty-nine survivors (male (33%), average age (SD):45.18(6.31) years) of Wenchuan earthquakes in 2008 each of whom was screened by experienced psychiatrists based on the clinician-administered post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) scale (CAPS), and their memory function scores were determined by the Wechsler Memory Scale-IV (WMS-IV). We explored which memory function scores were significantly associated with CAPS scores. Using simple multiple kernel learning (MKL), Rs-fMRI was used to predict the memory function scores that were associated with CAPS scores. A support vector machine (SVM) was also used to make classifications in trauma survivors with or without PTSD. RESULTS: Spatial addition (SA), which is defined by spatial working memory function, was negatively correlated with the total CAPS score (r = - 0.22, P = 0.04). The use of simple MKL allowed quantitative association of SA scores with statistically significant accuracy (correlation = 0.28, P = 0.03; mean squared error = 8.36; P = 0.04). The left middle frontal gyrus and the left precuneus contributed the largest proportion to the simple MKL association frame. The SVM could not make a quantitative classification of diagnosis with statistically significant accuracy. LIMITATIONS: The use of the cross-sectional study design after exposure to an earthquake and the leave-one-out cross-validation (LOOCV) increases the risk of overfitting. CONCLUSION: Spontaneous brain activity of the left middle frontal gyrus and the left precuneus acquired by rs-fMRI may be a brain mechanism of visual working memory that is related to PTSD symptoms. Machine learning may be a useful tool in the identification of brain mechanisms of memory impairment in trauma survivors.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the heterogeneity of the developmental trajectory of posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms (PTS) among children and adolescents after Lushan earthquake and to explore the effect of gender and age on the trajectory. METHODS: A total of 1 623 participants completed three assessments at 2 weeks, 3 months and 6 months after the earthquake. Latent growth mixture model (LGMM) was used for statistical analysis in the software Mplus 8.0. RESULTS: The PTS developmental trajectories among children and adolescents exposed to the earthquake had four categories: the normal stress group (31.1%, class 1), the persistent impairment group (4.5%, class 2), the psychological recovery group (46.8%, class 3) and the persistent mild symptom group (17.6%, class 4). The PTS development trajectories were significantly different in two gender groups, and the proportion of girls in the persistently injured group was higher than other three groups. The PTS development trajectories had no difference in two age groups. CONCLUSION: The developmental trajectories of PTS in children and adolescents after the earthquake have significant population heterogeneity, which is affected by gender.

Suboptimal levels of serum vitamin D levels have been implied to be associated with cardiovascular diseases and endothelial dysfunction, conditions closely associated with erectile dysfunction (ED). The present systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the vitamin D levels in subjects with ED compared to controls and the 5-item version of the international index of erectile function (IIEF-5) score in subjects with vitamin D deficiency compared to those without vitamin D deficiency in order to elucidate the role of vitamin D in the pathogenesis of ED. Studies evaluating the possible association between vitamin D levels and ED were initially screened and thus included following electronic literature search of database Cochrane Library, PUBMED, EMBASE and MEDLINE. Essential article information including outcome measures was extracted from the qualified studies by two independent authors, and STATA 12.0 software was used conducted the meta-analysis. Subgroup analyses were conducted by vitamin D detection methods and sample size. The standard mean difference (SMD) as well as the 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) was applied to estimate the outcome measures. A total of seven articles were included in our meta-analysis with a total of 4,132 subjects. Pooled estimate was in favour of increased vitamin D levels in subjects without ED with a SMD of 3.027 ng/ml, 95%CI 2.290-3.314, p = 0.000. However, subgroup analysis showed an opposite trend, after one study with a sample size over 1,000 that could possibly influence the weight balance was excluded, with a SMD of 0.267, 95%CI -0.052 to 0.585, p = 0.101. We also identified about 0.320 higher in IIEF-5 score (95%CI = 0.146-0.494, p = 0.000) in subjects without vitamin D deficiency versus with vitamin D deficiency. Nevertheless, subgroup analysis based on vitamin D detection methods obtained differential results (radioimmunoassay subgroup, SMD(95%CI) = 0.573 (0.275-0.870), p = 0.000; immunoassay subgroup, SMD(95%CI) = 0.189 (-0.025 to 0.404), p = 0.084). In conclusion, results from the present meta-analysis did not provide a strong relationship between vitamin D and the risk of ED. However, the results should be interpreted with caution and more high quality studies are warranted.

BACKGROUND: Neuroimaging findings suggest that social anxiety disorder (SAD) may be correlated with changes in regional- or network-level brain function. However, few studies have explored alterations in intrinsic resting cerebral function in patients with SAD at both the regional and network levels, particularly focusing on the theory of mind (ToM)-related regions. This study was performed to investigate changes in neural activity and functional connectivity (FC) in ToM-related regions during the resting state in SAD patients and to determine how these alterations are correlated with the clinical symptoms of SAD. METHODS: Forty-three SAD patients and 43 matched healthy controls underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) scans. First, the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) approach was used to explore regional activity. Then, the ToM-related region, i.e., the left precuneus, which showed altered ALFF values, was adopted as a seed for further FC analyses to assess network-level alterations in SAD. Between-group differences were compared using voxel-based two-sample t-tests (P<0.05, with Gaussian random field correction). Pearson's correlation analyses were performed to examine relationships between alterations in ALFF and FC and clinical symptoms. RESULTS: Compared with the healthy controls, SAD patients showed decreased ALFF in the bilateral putamen (PUT) and left supplementary motor area (SMA) and increased ALFF in the right inferior parietal lobule (IPL), left precuneus and right cerebellar posterior lobe. Moreover, SAD patients exhibited lower connectivity between the left precuneus and the cerebellar posterior lobe, right inferior temporal gyrus (ITG), right parahippocampal gyrus (PHG) and left medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). The altered ALFF values in the left precuneus and the hypoconnectivity between the left precuneus and left cerebellar posterior lobe were correlated with the patients' clinical symptoms (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The precuneus, a ToM-related region, was altered at both the regional and network level in patients with SAD. Pathological fear and avoidance in SAD were correlated with abnormal regional function in the precuneus, whereas depression and anxiety were primarily correlated with functional deficits in the precuneus-related network. The altered FC within the precuneus-cerebellar region may reflect an imbalance in the neuromodulation of anxiety and depressive symptoms in SAD. These findings may facilitate a greater understanding of potential SAD neural substrates and could be used to identify potential targets for further treatment.

Some intrinsic connectivity networks including the default mode network (DMN) and executive control network (ECN) may underlie social anxiety disorder (SAD). Although the cerebellum has been implicated in the pathophysiology of SAD and several networks relevant to higher-order cognition, it remains unknown whether cerebellar areas involved in DMN and ECN exhibit altered resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) with cortical networks in SAD. Forty-six patients with SAD and 64 healthy controls (HC) were included and submitted to the baseline resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Seventeen SAD patients who completed post-treatment clinical assessments were included after group cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). RsFC of three cerebellar subregions in both groups was assessed respectively in a voxel-wise way, and these rsFC maps were compared by two-sample t tests between groups. Whole-brain voxel-wise regression was performed to examine whether cerebellar connectivity networks can predict response to CBT. Lower rsFC circuits of cerebellar subregions compared with HC at baseline (p < 0.05, corrected by false discovery rate) were revealed. The left Crus I rsFC with dorsal medial prefrontal cortex was negatively correlated with symptom severity. The clinical assessments in SAD patients were significantly decreased after CBT. Higher pretreatment cerebellar rsFC with angular gyrus and dorsal lateral frontal cortex corresponded with greater symptom improvement following CBT. Cerebellar rsFC circuits involving DMN and ECN are possible neuropathologic mechanisms of SAD. Stronger pretreatment cerebellar rsFC circuits involving ECN suggest potential neural markers to predict CBT response.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of group cognitive behavioral therapy (GCBT) on social anxiety disorders (SAD). METHODS: A total of 50 patients with SAD were recruited in this study. A survey containing the Liebowitz social anxiety scale (LSAS),the automatic thoughts questionnaire (ATQ),the fear of negative evaluation questionnaire (FNE),the social support rating scale (SSRS),the tridimensional personality questionnaire (TPQ),and the egna minnen barndoms uppfostran (EMBU) was administered before and (one week) after the GCBT,including in the 50 healthy controls. About 21 patients completed the eight-week GCBT (once a week,2 h a session). Follow-up surveys were conducted on 40 patients (22 patients treated with GCBT and 18 untreated) over a 1-5 year period. RESULTS: Significant differences were found between the SAD patients and healthy controls in thinking mode,personality characteristics,social support,parental rearing styles,and social anxiety symptoms. Significant decrease in social anxiety symptom ( t=4.06, P=0.000) , negative automatic thoughts ( t=4.58, P=0.000) and fear for rejection ( t=3.85, P=0.000) were observed after the GCBT therapy. Such improvement was positively correlated with subjective social support (r=0.361, P=0.022) ,and negatively correlated with rejection of father (r=-0.431, P=0.005) . There was also statistical difference between the patients with and without the GCBT therapy ( P=0.033) . CONCLUSION: GCBT treatment can relieve SAD symptoms by changing the negative cognitive of SAD patients. Social support and rejection of father affects the prognosis of SAD.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that asthma patients are more susceptible to anxiety or depression and have more specifically elevated depressive symptomology. These psychological factors are associated with anatomical brain changes. However, little is known about alterations in spontaneous brain activity in asthma patients with depressive symptoms. Here we hypothesized that asthma patients exhibit an altered regional spontaneous brain activity, which may contribute to their increased susceptibility to depression and poor perception of asthma symptoms. The purpose of this study was to examine spontaneous brain activity in female asthma patients using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). METHODS: Eleven asthmatics without depressive symptoms (ASs), 14 asthmatics with depressive symptoms (ADs), and 15 age- and education-matched healthy controls (HCs) completed rs-fMRI. The regional homogeneity (ReHo) value was calculated based on rs-fMRI to assess local signal synchrony strength and compared among the groups. Correlation analyses were conducted between both ReHo values and clinical parameters. RESULT: Compared with HCs, ASs showed a significantly increased ReHo in the right insula; whereas ADs showed a significantly decreased ReHo in the right insula, which positively correlated with nocturnal symptom score in the Asthma Control Test (r = 0.562, P = 0.036). No significant correlation was observed between the total ACT scores and right insula activities (r = 0.263, P = 0.364). CONCLUSION: Decreased ReHo in the right insula may play an important role in depressive symptoms and abnormal asthma symptom perception.

BACKGROUND: Amygdala is considered as the core pathogenesis of generalized social anxiety disorder (GSAD). However, it is still unclear whether effective group cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) could modulate the function of amygdala-related network. We aimed to examine the resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) of the amygdala before and after group CBT. METHODS: Fifteen patients with GSAD were scanned on a 3T MR system before and after 8 weeks of group CBT. For comparison, nineteen healthy control participants also underwent baseline fMRI scanning. We used bilateral amygdala as seed regions and the rsFC maps of the right and left amygdala were created separately in a voxel-wise way. Clusters survived two-tailed Gaussian Random Field (GRF) correction at p <0.05 (voxel z value >2.3). RESULTS: Compared with baseline, patients with CBT showed significantly decreased connectivity of the left amygdala with the right putamen, the left dorsal medial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) and the right dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC). Especially, the changes of the connectivity between the left amygdala and the dACC positively correlated with changes of the anxiety symptom in patients. Furthermore, in relative to controls, patients showed higher connectivity of left amygdala with dmPFC and dACC at baseline, while normal after CBT. CONCLUSIONS: Short-term group CBT could down-regulate the abnormal higher connectivity of prefrontal-amygdala network, along with clinical improvement. This may provide a potential biomarker to monitor the treatment effect of CBT in GSAD patients.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the altered spontaneous brain activity in patients with social anxiety disorders (SAD) before and after cognitive behavior therapy (CBT),and determine the neuromechanism of formation,treatment and recovery of SAD. METHODS: Fifteen SAD patients were treated with an eight-week group CBT.The patients underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) at resting state before and after the treatments.Eighteen healthy controls (HC) were recruited and underwent a baseline fMRI scan.The regional homogeneity (ReHo) of the patients was compared with the healthy controls.Before the baseline scanning,all participants were assessed with the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale(LSAS),the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA) and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD). RESULTS: All participants were right-handed.10 males and 4 females were in the patient group,with mean age of (27.07±8.11) years.13 males and 5 females were in the HC group,with mean age of (26.28±2.42) years.There was no difference for gender and age while significant differences were found in LSAS,HAMA,HAMD between patients and controls (P<0.01).After 8 weeks of group CBT,clinical assessments significantly decreased (P<0.05) in patients group.Compared with HC,the pre-treatment SAD patients showed significantly increased ReHo in right cerebellum lobe at baseline [(P<0.05,with Gaussian random field (GRF) correction]; but the difference became insignificant after the group CBT.The post-treatment patients showed increased ReHo in left putamen and right caudate compared with their pre-treatment conditions (P<0.05,with GRF correction).Pre-post ReHo change in right cerebellum posterior in patients was positively correlated with pre-post change of LSAS-fear scores (r=0.62,P=0.015). CONCLUSIONS: The activity of cerebellum might be one of the potential biomakers to modulate the treatment effect of CBT in SAD,which provides a basis for further investigation into the pathophysiology of SAD.

BACKGROUND: Although no more traumatic stimuli exists, a variety of symptoms are persisting in chronic Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) patients. It is therefore necessary to explore the spontaneous brain activity of treatment-naïve PTSD patients during resting-state. METHOD: Seventeen treatment-naïve PTSD patients and twenty traumatized controls were recruited and underwent a resting functional magnetic resonance imaging (Rs-fMRI) scan. The differences of regional brain spontaneous activity between the participants with and without PTSD were measured by Amplitude of Low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF). The relationship between the altered brain measurements and the symptoms of PTSD were analyzed. RESULT: Compared to traumatized controls, the PTSD group showed significantly altered ALFF in many emotion-related brain regions, such as the medial anterior cingulate cortex (MACC), dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), insular (IC), middle temporal gyrus (MTG), and ventral posterior cingulate cortex (VPCC). Interestingly this is the first report of a hyperactive visual cortex (V1/V2) during resting-state in treatment-naïve PTSD patients. There were significant positive correlations between ALFF values in the bilateral visual cortex and re-experiencing or avoidance in PTSD. Negative correlation was observed between ALFF values in MACC and avoidance. CONCLUSION: This study suggested that the visual cortex and the MACC may be involved in the characteristic symptoms of chronic PTSD, such as re-experiencing and avoidance. Future studies that focus on these areas of the brain are required, as alteration of these areas may act as a biomarker and could be targeted in future treatments for PTSD.

Background: In recent years, there has been a growing popularity in engaging in activities at high altitudes, such as hiking and work. However, these high-altitude environments pose risks of hypoxia, which can lead to various acute or chronic cerebral diseases. These conditions include common neurological diseases such as acute mountain sickness (AMS), high-altitude cerebral edema, and altitude-related cerebrovascular diseases, as well as psychiatric disorders such as anxiety, depression, and psychosis. However, reviews of altitude-related neuropsychiatric conditions and their potential mechanisms are rare. Methods: We conducted searches on PubMed and Google Scholar, exploring existing literature encompassing preclinical and clinical studies. Our aim was to summarize the prevalent neuropsychiatric diseases induced by altitude hypoxia, the potential pathophysiological mechanisms, as well as the available pharmacological and nonpharmacological strategies for prevention and intervention. Results: The development of altitude-related cerebral diseases may arise from various pathogenic processes, including neurovascular alterations associated with hypoxia, cytotoxic responses, activation of reactive oxygen species, and dysregulation of the expression of hypoxia inducible factor-1 and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2. Furthermore, the interplay between hypoxia-induced neurological and psychiatric changes is believed to play a role in the progression of brain damage. Conclusions: While there is some evidence pointing to pathophysiological changes in hypoxia-induced brain damage, the precise mechanisms responsible for neuropsychiatric alterations remain elusive. Currently, the range of prevention and intervention strategies available is primarily focused on addressing AMS, with a preference for prevention rather than treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research suggests a potential link between unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs) and ADHD, but the causal relationship remains uncertain. This study aims to investigate the causal association between ADHD and UFAs using Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. METHODS: Summary data from genome-wide association studies were used to estimate the concentration of circulating UFAs, including Monounsaturated Fatty Acids (MUFAs), Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFAs), Omega-3 PUFAs, Omega-6 PUFAs, Linoleic Acid (LA), and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA). Data from the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium, including both childhood and adult ADHD, were respectively used to examine the relationship between genetically predicted UFAs levels and ADHD. Various MR methods, including Inverse-variance weighted (IVW), MR Pleiotropy RESidual Sum and Outlier, MR-Egger, weighted median, and weighted mode, were employed to assess heterogeneity and pleiotropy. RESULTS: The IVW revealed only nominal evidence suggesting a potential causal relationship between genetically predicted PUFAs (OR = 0.92, 95% CI [0.85, 0.99], p = .031), Omega-6 PUFAs (OR = 0.90, 95% CI [0.83, 0.98], p = .020), and LA levels (OR = 0.90, 95% CI [0.82, 0.98], p = .021) with childhood ADHD risk. However, after false discovery rate correction, the p-values for PUFAs, Omega-6 PUFAs, and LA levels all exceeded the threshold for significance. For adult ADHD, we did not find any significant associations between the six circulating UFA levels and adult ADHD. CONCLUSION: Our findings do not support a causal relationship between UFAs levels and ADHD. This suggests that UFAs supplements may not be effective in improving ADHD symptoms and importantly, it appears that UFAs levels may not have a long-term effect on ADHD.

Understory vegetation has an important impact on soil organic carbon (SOC) accumulation. However, little is known about how understory vegetation alters soil microbial community composition and how microbial diversity contributes to SOC chemical composition and persistence during subtropical forest restoration. In this study, removal treatments of an understory fern (Dicranopteris dichotoma) were carried out within pine (Pinus massoniana) plantations restored in different years in subtropical China. Soil microbial community composition and microbial diversity were measured using phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) biomarkers and high-throughput sequencing, respectively. The chemical composition of SOC was also measured via solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (13C NMR). Our results showed that fern removal decreased alkyl C by 4.2 % but increased O-alkyl C by 15.6 % on average, leading to a decline of alkyl C/O-alkyl C ratio, suggesting altered chemical composition of SOC and lowered SOC recalcitrance without fern. Fern removal significantly lowered the fungi-to-bacteria ratio, and it also reduced fungal and bacterial diversity. Partial correlation analysis revealed that soil nitrogen availability was a key factor influencing microbial diversity. Bacterial diversity showed a close relationship with the Alkyl C/O-alkyl C ratio following fern removal. Furthermore, the microbial community structure and bacterial diversity were responsible for 18 % and 55 % of the explained variance in the chemical composition of SOC, respectively. Taken together, these analyses jointly suggest that bacterial diversity exerts a greater role than microbial community structure in supporting SOC persistence during understory fern removal. Our study emphasizes the significance of understory ferns in supporting microbial abundance and diversity as a means of altering SOC persistence during subtropical forest restoration.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are psychiatric disorders that can present with overlapping symptoms and shared risk factors. However, the extent to which these disorders share common underlying neuropathological mechanisms remains unclear. To investigate the similarities and differences in task-evoked brain activation patterns between patients with PTSD and MDD. METHODS: A coordinate-based meta-analysis was conducted across 35 PTSD studies (564 patients and 543 healthy controls) and 125 MDD studies (4049 patients and 4170 healthy controls) using anisotropic effect-size signed differential mapping software. RESULTS: Both PTSD and MDD patients exhibited increased neural activation in the bilateral inferior frontal gyrus. However, PTSD patients showed increased neural activation in the right insula, left supplementary motor area extending to median cingulate gyrus and superior frontal gyrus (SFG), and left fusiform gyrus, and decreased neural activation in the right posterior cingulate gyrus, right middle temporal gyrus, right paracentral lobule, and right inferior parietal gyrus relative to MDD patients. CONCLUSION: Our meta-analysis suggests that PTSD and MDD share some similar patterns of brain activation, but also have distinct neural signatures. These findings contribute to our understanding of the potential neuropathology underlying these disorders and may inform the development of more targeted and effective treatment and intervention strategies. Moreover, these results may provide useful neuroimaging targets for the differential diagnosis of MDD and PTSD.

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is on the rise globally, posing a significant societal challenge. Pica, an eating disorder, presents difficulties in treatment due to the absence of effective medications. In this report, we discuss a complex case involving the co-occurrence of pica and non-suicidal self-injury. A 13-year-old girl was admitted to our hospital due to ingesting two batteries. She features a persistent, intense appetite along with sudden and compulsive behaviors such as consuming inedible items or self-inflicted cutting. After receiving a combination of pharmacological treatments (quetiapine, lithium and sertraline), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and modified electroconvulsive therapy (MECT) for 25 days, she was discharged with relief from her clinical symptoms.

Whether remitted major depressive disorder (rMDD) and MDD present common or distinct neuropathological mechanisms remains unclear. We performed a meta-analysis of task-related whole-brain functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) using anisotropic effect-size signed differential mapping software to compare brain activation between rMDD/MDD patients and healthy controls (HCs). We included 18 rMDD studies (458 patients and 476 HCs) and 120 MDD studies (3746 patients and 3863 HCs). The results showed that MDD and rMDD patients shared increased neural activation in the right temporal pole and right superior temporal gyrus. Several brain regions, including the right middle temporal gyrus, left inferior parietal, prefrontal cortex, left superior frontal gyrus and striatum, differed significantly between MDD and rMDD. Meta-regression analyses revealed that the percentage of females with MDD was positively associated with brain activity in the right lenticular nucleus/putamen. Our results provide valuable insights into the underlying neuropathology of brain dysfunction in MDD, developing more targeted and efficacious treatment and intervention strategies, and more importantly, providing potential neuroimaging targets for the early screening of MDD.

OBJECTIVE: Hospital management and medical treatment changed during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. This study investigated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on patients with bladder cancer. METHODS: In this multicenter retrospective study, we collected information from the electronic medical records of outpatients who underwent cystoscopy and inpatients with confirmed bladder cancer in three hospitals in Nanjing (two province-level and one county-level hospitals) in 2019 and 2020. Patients' home addresses, treatment methods, length of stay, and pathology were compared between the periods. RESULTS: In total, 4048 outpatients and 1242 inpatients were included. The average number of cystoscopies decreased significantly during the lockdown. In province-level hospitals, the number of cystoscopies increased gradually as the pandemic was brought under control but remained lower than that in 2019, whereas the number grew in 2020 in county-level hospitals. The rates of recurrence and radical cystectomy were higher in 2020 than in 2019. No significant difference in the pathological grade was observed. More patients who underwent radical cystectomy were diagnosed with muscle-invasive bladder cancer during the 2020 lockdown. CONCLUSION: The pandemic severely affected patients with bladder cancer, mainly in their choice of institution and treatment.
