Pollen, as the male gametophyte, carries half of plant genetic information and is an important source of germplasm. The cryopreservation of pollen can not only preserve germplasm, but also solve the problem of time and space barrier in crossbreeding. So it is of great significance to explore the mechanism of pollen viability maintenance after cryopreservation. In this paper, 10 cultivars of Paeonia lactiflora with different fresh pollen viability that did not change after cryopreservation were taken as objects and the effects of pollen inclusions such as soluble sugar, starch, soluble protein, free amino acids, and proline were explored. The results showed that: (1) The contents of pollen inclusions in the fresh pollen of 10 cultivars were different. After cryopreservation, the contents of starch and free amino acids significantly decreased in 10 cultivars, and the soluble sugar, soluble protein, and proline varied with cultivars. (2) Correlation analysis showed that fresh pollen viability was significantly positively correlated with the soluble sugar (R-values of 0.630) and starch content (R-values of 0.694) in fresh pollen. But after cryopreservation pollen viability was only significantly positively correlated with the starch content (R-values of 0.725). These results suggest that the effects of pollen inclusions on pollen vitality are different before and after cryopreservation. The fresh pollen with higher soluble sugar and starch is more vital. But after cryopreservation, the pollen with high starch content has higher viability. The maintenance of stable pollen viability after cryopreservation appears to be related to starch content or starch metabolism, which requires further to study for a final determination.

BACKGROUND: Sheep genomes undergo numerous genes losses, gains and mutation that generates genome variability among breeds of the same species after long time natural and artificial selection. However, the microevolution of native sheep in northwest China remains elusive. Our aim was to compare the genomes and relevant reproductive traits of four sheep breeds from different climatic environments, to unveil the selection challenges that this species cope with, and the microevolutionary differences in sheep genomes. Here, we resequenced the genomes of 4 representative sheep breeds in northwest China, including Kazakh sheep and Duolang sheep of native breeds, and Hu sheep and Suffolk sheep of exotic breeds with different reproductive characteristics. RESULTS: We found that these four breeds had a similar expansion experience from ~ 10,000 to 1,000,000 years ago. In the past 10,000 years, the selection intensity of the four breeds was inconsistent, resulting in differences in reproductive traits. We explored the sheep variome and selection signatures by FST and θπ. The genomic regions containing genes associated with different reproductive traits that may be potential targets for breeding and selection were detected. Furthermore, non-synonymous mutations in a set of plausible candidate genes and significant differences in their allele frequency distributions across breeds with different reproductive characteristics were found. We identified PAK1, CYP19A1 and PER1 as a likely causal gene for seasonal reproduction in native sheep through qPCR, Western blot and ELISA analyses. Also, the haplotype frequencies of 3 tested gene regions related to reproduction were significantly different among four sheep breeds. CONCLUSIONS: Our results provide insights into the microevolution of native sheep and valuable genomic information for identifying genes associated with important reproductive traits in sheep.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the effectiveness of hypertonic dextrose prolotherapy (DPT) in plantar fasciopathy (PF) compared with other non-surgical treatments. DATA SOURCES: PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science, Allied and Complementary Medicine Database, Global Health, Ovid Nursing Database, Dimensions, and WHO ICTRP were searched from inception to April 30th, 2022. STUDY SELECTION: Two independent reviewers selected randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that evaluated the effectiveness of DPT in PF compared with non-surgical treatments. Outcomes included pain intensity, foot and ankle function, and plantar fascia thickness. DATA EXTRACTION: Two independent reviewers conducted data extraction. Risk of bias (RoB) assessment was conducted using the Cochrane Risk of Bias 2 (RoB 2) tool, and certainty of evidence was assessed with Grading of Recommendation Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE). DATA SYNTHESIS: Eight RCTs (n=469) met the inclusion criteria. Pooled results favored the use of DPT versus normal saline (NS) injections in reducing pain (weighted mean difference [WMD] -41.72; 95% confidence interval [CI] -62.36 to -21.08; P<.01; low certainty evidence) and improving function [WMD -39.04; 95% CI -55.24 to -22.85; P<.01; low certainty evidence] in the medium term. Pooled results also showed corticosteroid (CS) injections was superior to DPT in reducing pain in the short term [standardized mean difference 0.77; 95% CI 0.40 to 1.14; P<.01; moderate certainty evidence]. Overall RoB varied from "some concerns" to "high". The overall certainty of evidence presented ranges from very low to moderate based on the assessment with the GRADE approach. CONCLUSION: Low certainty evidence demonstrated that DPT was superior to NS injections in reducing pain and improving function in the medium term, but moderate certainty evidence showed that it was inferior to CS in reducing pain in the short term. Further high-quality RCTs with standard protocol, longer-term follow-up, and adequate sample size are needed to confirm its role in clinical practice.

With the development of metabolomics analytical techniques, relevant studies have increased in recent decades. The procedures of metabolomics analysis mainly include sample preparation, data acquisition and pre-processing, multivariate statistical analysis, as well as maker compounds' identification. In the present review, we summarized the published articles of tea metabolomics regarding different analytical tools, such as mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance, ultraviolet-visible spectrometry, and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry. The metabolite variation of fresh tea leaves with different treatments, such as biotic/abiotic stress, horticultural measures, and nutritional supplies was reviewed. Furthermore, the changes of chemical composition of processed tea samples under different processing technologies were also profiled. Since the identification of critical or marker metabolites is a complicated task, we also discussed the procedure of metabolite identification to clarify the importance of omics data analysis. The present review provides a workflow diagram for tea metabolomics research and also the perspectives of related studies in the future.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a prevalent autoimmune disease that involves the overgrowth and inflammation of synovial tissue, leading to the degeneration and impairment of joints. In recent years, numerous studies have shown a close relationship between the hypoxic microenvironment in joints and the occurrence and progression of RA. The main cause of the pathological changes in RA is widely believed to be the abnormal expression of hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) in joints. This paper describes and illustrates the structure and primary functions of HIF-1 and explains the main regulatory methods of HIF-1, including the PHDs/HIF-1 α/pVHL pathway, factor-inhibiting HIF (FIH), regulation of inflammatory cytokines, and the NF-κB pathway. Furthermore, this paper discusses the mechanism of HIF-1 and its impact on inflammation, angiogenesis, and cartilage destruction in greater detail. We summarize previous research findings on the mechanism of HIF-1 and propose new potential treatments for RA based on the pathogenesis of HIF-1 in RA.

Maillard reaction is a non-enzymatic thermal reaction during food processing and storage. It massively contributes to the flavor, color, health benefits and safety of foods and could be briefly segmented into initial, intermediate and final stages with the development of a cascade of chemical reactions. During thermal reaction of food ingredients, sugar, protein and amino acids are usually the main substrates, and polyphenols co-existed in food could also participate in the Maillard reaction as a modulator. Polyphenols including flavan-3-ols, hydroxycinnamic acids, flavonoids, and tannins have shown various effects throughout the process of Maillard reaction, including conjugating amino acids/sugars, trapping α-dicarbonyls, capturing Amadori rearrangement products (ARPs), as well as decreasing acrylamide and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) levels. These effects significantly influenced the flavor, taste and color of processed foods, and also decreased the hazard products' level. The chemical mechanism of polyphenols-Maillard products involved the scavenging of radicals, as well as nucleophilic addition and substitution reactions. In the present review, we concluded and discussed the interaction of polyphenols and Maillard reaction, and proposed some perspectives for future studies.

This review aims to identify, appraise, and synthesize research evidence of the association between electronic health (eHealth) literacy and health outcomes in older adults. English-written articles that presented the relationships between eHealth literacy and health-related outcomes in older adults were identified by searching five scientific databases (Web of Science, PubMed, Cochrane Library, APA PsycInfo, and EMBASE) hand-searching reference lists. Searches yielded 2993 studies after duplicates were removed, of which 24 publications were included in the final review. eHealth literacy was relatively low in older adults, and the eHealth Literacy Scale, developed by Norman and Skinner in 2006, was the most frequently used instrument in the included studies (21/24, 87.5%). The health-related outcomes associated with eHealth literacy were grouped into four categories: physical, behavioral, psychosocial, and cognitive. For behavioral (e.g., health-promoting behaviors, self-care, and medication adherence) and cognitive (e.g., health knowledge and health decision making) outcomes, the evidence was mostly consistent that eHealth literacy was positively associated with better outcomes. For physical (e.g., health-related quality of life) and psychosocial outcomes (e.g., anxiety and self-efficacy), the associations were less consistent, with some studies showing significant associations while others showed no associations. Most included studies were assessed as moderate quality. Overall, higher eHealth literacy is associated with more positive health behaviors and better health knowledge and attitude in older adults, however, the associations with some physical and psychosocial outcomes are less consistent. Clarifying the pathways of the relationships between eHealth literacy and some health-related outcomes is needed for further exploring their underlying mechanisms.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the effectiveness of hypertonic dextrose prolotherapy (DPT) on pain intensity and physical functioning in patients with lateral elbow tendinosis (LET) compared with other active non-surgical treatments. DATA SOURCES: Systematic search of Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, PubMed, Dimensions, Global Health, NHS Health Technology Assessment, Allied and Complementary Medicine, and OVID nursing database from inception to June 15, 2021, without language restrictions. STUDY SELECTION: Two reviewers independently identified parallel or crossover randomized controlled trials that evaluated the effectiveness of DPT in LET. The search identified 245 records; data from 8 studies (354 patients) were included. DATA EXTRACTION: Two reviewers independently extracted data and assessed included studies. The Cochrane Risk of Bias 2 tool was used to evaluate risk of bias. The Grading of Recommendation Assessment, Development, and Evaluation approach was used to assess quality of the evidence. DATA SYNTHESIS: Pooled results favored the use of DPT in reducing tennis elbow pain intensity compared with active controls at 12 weeks postenrollment, with a standardized mean difference of -0.44 (95% confidence interval, -0.88 to -0.01, P=.04) and of moderate heterogeneity (I2=49%). Pooled results also favored the use of DPT on physical functioning compared with active controls at 12 weeks, with Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand scores achieving a mean difference of -15.04 (95% confidence interval, -20.25 to -9.82, P<.001) and of low heterogeneity (I2=0.0%). No major related adverse events have been reported. CONCLUSIONS: DPT is superior to active controls at 12 weeks for decreasing pain intensity and functioning by margins that meet criteria for clinical relevance in the treatment of LET. Although existing studies are too small to assess rare adverse events, for patients with LET, especially those refractory to first-line treatments, DPT can be considered a nonsurgical treatment option in carefully selected patients. Further high-quality trials with comparison with other injection therapies are needed.

Pollen contains all the haploid genetic information of species and is of great significance to preserve germplasm resources safely and effectively. The acquisition of high quality materials is a very important step in germplasm preservation. This study compared the viability and physiological condition of Paeonia lactiflora pollen from several provenances after preservation, to explore the effect of provenance difference on pollen viability and physiological responses after preservation. The results showed that: the pollen viability of two cultivars were significantly different in provenances after preserved at -20 °C or liquid nitrogen (LN) for 3 months, the pollen viability of 'Fen Yu Nu' showed Lanzhou > Beijing > Luoyang > Heze, while the pollen viability of 'Zi Feng Chao Yang' showed Luoyang > Beijing > Heze. Similarly, the oxidative stress levels of the Paeonia lactiflora pollen after preservation with LN or -20 °C were also significantly different among the provenances, and there was a relationship between the viability and the oxidative stress levels produced by the provenances differences. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) content, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and glutamate reductase (GR) activity in pollen from different provenances were contrary to the changes of viability; while catalase (CAT), ascorbic acid peroxidase (APX), ascorbic acid (AsA) and glutathione (GSH) were consistent with the changes of viability. The results indicated that the responses of antioxidant systems of two cultivars pollen to preservation with LN or -20 °C were different in provenances, and this difference was one of the reasons for the different viability of pollen after preservation with LN or -20 °C.

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of psychosocial interventions on quality of life (QOL) among people living with HIV has been validated, including mobile health (mHealth) interventions. However, it is unclear which components of such interventions account for these effects. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine positive coping as a potential mediator of the effects of an mHealth intervention on QOL among people living with HIV. METHODS: For this secondary analysis, we used data from an mHealth-based randomized controlled trial, Run4Love, which was conducted to improve QOL and mental health outcomes of people living with HIV. A total of 300 participants were randomly assigned to the intervention group to receive the adapted cognitive-behavioral stress management courses and regular physical activity promotion or the waitlist control group in a 1:1 ratio. Our analysis focused on positive coping and QOL, which were repeatedly measured at baseline and at 3-, 6-, and 9-month follow-ups. Latent growth curve models were constructed to explore the mediating role of positive coping in the effects of the mHealth intervention on QOL. RESULTS: Positive coping served as a mediator in the effect of the mHealth intervention on QOL for up to 9 months. The mHealth intervention had a significant and positive indirect effect on the slope of QOL via the slope of positive coping (b=2.592×1.620=4.198, 95% CI 1.189-7.207, P=.006). The direct effect of the intervention was not significant (b=0.552, 95% CI -2.154 to 3.258, P=.69) when controlling for the mediator. CONCLUSIONS: The longitudinal findings suggest that positive coping could be a crucial mediator of the mHealth intervention in enhancing QOL among people living with HIV. These findings underscore the importance of improving positive coping skills in mHealth interventions to improve QOL among people living with HIV.

Litter size is one of the important economic traits of livestock. Seasonal oestrus, ovulation and lambing of sheep have severely restricted the development of sheep farming in Xinjiang, China. The purpose of this study was to investigate the polymorphisms and genetic correlation between GRM1, GNAQ and HCRTR1 genes and the seasonal reproduction and litter size in three sheep breeds. The DNA mixed pool sequencing and PCR-SSCP methods were used to detect single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of GRM1, GNAQ and HCRTR1 genes in seasonal oestrous (Kazakh and Chinese Merino [Xinjiang Junken type]) and perennial oestrous (Hu) sheep breeds. The association between genetic polymorphism and litter size was also analysed. The results showed that T945C in exon 2 of GRM1 gene, C589T in exon 2 of HCRTR1 gene and A191G in exon 2 of GNAQ gene were identified by Sanger sequencing, and three genotypes were existed in each SNP site, which all belonged to the synonymous mutation. GRM1 (CC), GNAQ (GA) and HCRTR1 (TC) were the dominant genotypes of seasonal reproduction and litter size in Kazakh sheep and Chinese Merino sheep, respectively, while, in perennial oestrous Hu sheep populations, the dominant genotypes were GRM1 (TC), GNAQ (GA) and HCRTR1 (TC), respectively, and association analysis also confirmed the results. The above results implied that GRM1, GNAQ and HCRTR1 genes are significantly associated with lambing traits in Kazakh, Chinese Merino and Hu sheep. Among them, the locus of GRM1 (T945C), GNAQ (A191G) and HCRTR1 (C589T) might be considered as a potential molecular marker, which controls seasonal reproduction and litter size in sheep.

Hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury (HIRI) is responsible for liver dysfunction, which involves reactive oxygen species (ROS) as the most critical marker. Real-time monitoring of ROS during HIRI can provide significant chance for early diagnosis and timely intervention. However, there is no probe available to track ROS fluctuations during HIRI in vivo, as it is extremely challenging to design reversibly responsive fluorescent probe in near-infrared region. Here, a reversible redox probe REPOMs emitting beyond 1500 nm is proposed to fill the blank, using rare earth ions-doped nanoparticles as emitter, and molybdenum-based polyoxometalate nanoclusters as the ROS-recognition site and emission modulator. REPOMs exhibited excellent response towards the repeated cycle between ROS and glutathione, based on which the time-resolved ROS changes during HIRI were successfully obtained. This reversible probe may provide a powerful tool to promote the hepatology research in the future.

One of the most common promoters of the initiation and growth of the tumor is an immune disturbance. Numerous immune cells and inflammatory factors play a role in the tumor-immune microenvironment. However, few studies have investigated the correlation between these immunological events and clinical consequences in cervical cancer. We measured the levels of numerous inflammatory mediators and frequencies of regulatory T cells (Tregs), myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) and mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells in peripheral blood (PB) of cervical cancer patients. Cervical cancer patients showed elevated production of interleukin (IL)-18 and plasma C-C chemokine ligand (CCL) 3/5. Meanwhile, an accumulation of C-C chemokine receptor 5 (CCR5) monocytic (Mo)-MDSCs and Tregs was observed. The cervical cancer group displayed increased frequencies of CD8+ , CD4+ and highly activated CD38+ CD8+ MAIT cells, and reduction of double-negative (DN) and PD1(CD279+ ) DN MAIT cells. Importantly, it was demonstrated that MAIT cells were positively related to Mo-MDSCs. Furthermore, an elevated concentration of PD1(CD279+ ) DN MAIT cells was significantly related to increased progression-free survival of patients with cervical cancer. In conclusion, our study suggests that the combined action of Mo-MDSCs and MAIT cells might be associated with the progression of cervical cancer, and the frequency of DN MAIT cells in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells was associated with the survival benefit of patients.

Real-time and in situ visualization of cerebrovascular dysfunction is significant for studying brain injury, which however, is restricted by the complex brain structure and limited imaging strategies. Luminescence imaging in NIR-IIb region (1500-1700 nm) is a promising tool owing to its merits including deep penetration, high resolution, and fast data acquisition. Unfortunately, a luminescent material in this region with sufficient brightness and biocompatibility is scarce. Herein, Ag2Se quantum dot-sensitized lanthanide-doped nanocrystals (QDs-LnNCs) with emission beyond 1500 nm were fabricated to image the cerebrovascular structure and hemodynamics in ischemic stroke and traumatic brain injury. The sensitization by QDs provided an over 100-fold enhanced brightness of LnNCs and a remarkable penetration depth of 11 mm. Dynamic information of blood perfusion and flow rates were acquired and the damage of the blood-brain barrier in the two injury models was investigated. Our results proved QDs-LnNCs as a kind of competent nanomaterial for noninvasive brain imaging.

Near-infrared (NIR) excited and NIR-IIb emissive Ag2Te quantum dots (QDs) display significant advantages in luminescence bioimaging and biosensing due to their unique photophysical properties. However, the poor luminescence intensity and limited strategy for constructing activatable probes severely restrict the wide bioapplications of Ag2Te QDs. Herein, we proposed a NIR dye-sensitization strategy to solve these two problems. First, we used IR-780 as the antenna for Ag2Te QDs to improve the ability of harvesting excitation light, obtaining 21-fold luminescence enhancement at 1620 nm under an 808 nm laser irradiation. Subsequently, by further functionalizing the heptamethine cyanine with a recognition unit of glutathione (GSH), Cy-GSH with target-triggered emission was yielded, which served as the potential sensitizer for Ag2Te QDs to fabricate an activatable ratiometric NIR-IIb nanoprobe for visualizing GSH in vivo with high contrast. This new strategy is expected as a powerful tool to promote the bioapplication of NIR-IIb QDs in the future.

BACKGROUND: Immune dysfunction is one of the mechanisms to promote polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Various immune cells have been reported to be involved in the development of PCOS. Meanwhile, the disturbance of metabolism is closely related to PCOS. The aim of this study is to explore the association of mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells and myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) with the metabolic dysfunction in PCOS. METHODS: 68 PCOS patients and 40 controls were recruited in this study and we collected the peripheral blood of participants' during their follicular phase. The frequencies of MAIT cells and MDSCs were determined by flow cytometry after being stained with different monoclonal antibodies. And the concentrations of cytokines were determined by ELISA. RESULTS: Compared to controls with normal metabolism, the frequency of MDSCs, CD8+MAIT cells and CD38+CD8+MAIT cells were significantly decreased in PCOS patients with normal metabolism, however, proportion of CD4+MAIT cells exhibited a noticeable increase. Similar results of CD8+MAIT, CD38+CD8+MAIT cells and reduced expression of IL-17 were observed in PCOS patients with metabolic dysfunction as compared to controls with metabolic disorders. PCOS patients with excessive testosterone levels displayed significantly decreased levels of CD8+MAIT, CD38+CD8+MAIT cells, MDSCs and Mo-MDSCs as compared to PCOS patients with normal testosterone concentrations. PCOS patients with abnormal weight showed a lower level and activation of CD8+MAIT cells. On the contrary, they displayed an enrichment of CD4+MAIT cells. PCOS patients with glucose metabolic disorder displayed a remarkable dysregulation of MDSCs and Mo-MDSCs. MDSCs were positively correlated with MAIT cells. Negative correlations between the frequency of CD8+MAIT cells, CD38+CD8+MAIT cells and body mass index were revealed. CD4+MAIT cells positively correlated with BMI. Mo-MDSCs were found to be negatively related to the levels of 2hour plasma glucose and HOMA-IR index. CONCLUSION: The impairment of CD8+MAIT cells and MDSCs is involved in the metabolic dysfunction of PCOS.

BACKGROUND: Mobile health (mHealth) interventions have been shown to effectively improve the quality of life (QOL) among people living with HIV. However, little is known about the long-term effects of mHealth interventions. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the intervention mechanisms of a social media-based intervention, Run4Love, on the QOL of people with HIV over across a 9-month follow-up period. METHODS: We recruited people living with HIV who were concurrently experiencing elevated depressive symptoms from an HIV outpatient clinic in South China. A total of 300 eligible participants were randomized either to the intervention group or the control group in a 1:1 ratio after they provided informed consent and completed a baseline survey. The intervention group received a 3-month WeChat-based intervention, comprising cognitive-behavioral stress management (CBSM) courses and physical activity promotion. The control group received a printed brochure on nutrition guidelines in addition to the usual care for HIV treatment. Neither participants nor the research staff were blinded to group assignment. All patients were followed at 3, 6, and 9 months. The primary outcome was depressive symptoms. Structural equation model (SEM) with longitudinal data was conducted to examine the sequential mediating effects of HIV-related stigma and depressive symptoms on the long-term intervention effects on participants' QOL. RESULTS: About 91.3% (274/300), 88.3% (265/300), and 86.7% (260/300) of all participants completed follow-up surveys at 3, 6, and 9 months, respectively. Results showed that the intervention had significantly improved participants' QOL at 9 months, via complete mediating effects of reduced HIV-related stigma at 3 months and decreased depressive symptoms at 6 months. No adverse events were reported. CONCLUSIONS: These findings underscore the critical roles of HIV-related stigma and depressive symptoms in an mHealth intervention with long-term effects on QOL improvements. We call for targeted mHealth interventions to improve QOL among people living with HIV, especially social media-based interventions that can address HIV-related stigma and alleviate depressive symptoms. This study, for the first time, predicts oxidative stability in camellia oils by partial least squares (PLS) built with proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and α-tocopherol content. The prediction models were established by the PLS method. Outlier detection, latent variables optimization, data pretreatment, and important variables selection were applied for models optimization. All the developed models exhibited good performance as indicated by R2 > 0.895 and root mean square error of estimation and root mean square error of prediction less than 0.322 and 0.307. For verification of the contribution of 1H NMR spectra and α-tocopherol for prediction performance, a PLS model with fatty acids composition instead of 1H NMR spectra and one with only 1H NMR spectra as input variables were developed, respectively. The results showed that the model based on 1H NMR data was more accurate and precise than that based on fatty acid composition data. And the performance of the models was significantly degraded without α-tocopherol as input variables.

Despite a strong evidence on the negative association between HIV-related stigma and quality of life (QoL), few studies have examined the indirect effects of this relationship. This study aimed to examine the association between HIV-related stigma and QoL and the indirect effects of positive coping and perceived stress in people living with HIV and depressive symptoms (PLWHD). This study used baseline date from a randomized controlled trial. Structural equation model was used to examine the association between HIV-related stigma and QoL as well as the indirect effects of positive coping and perceived stress. Perceived and internalized stigma had negative direct (ß = -0.14, p < 0.05) effect on QoL. Moreover, perceived and internalized stigma had indirect effects on QoL through decreased positive coping and increased perceived stress (ß = -0.23, p < 0.001). Multilevel interventions to reduce perceived and internalized stigma and perceived stress as well as programs to enhance positive coping may improve QoL of PLWHD. Integrated interventions that both enhance positive coping and reduce perceived stress and stigma are potentially more effective in improving QoL than programs that focus on only one aspect of stigma reduction among PLWHD.

BACKGROUND: People undergoing mass home- and community-based quarantine are vulnerable to mental health disorders during outbreaks of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), but few studies have evaluated the associated psychosocial factors. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of anxiety and depressive symptoms and identify associated demographic and psychosocial factors in the general Chinese population during the COVID-19 pandemic quarantine period. METHODS: Participants aged 18 years or above were recruited in a cross-sectional online survey using snowball sampling from February 26-29, 2020. The survey included questions on demographics, family relationships, chronic diseases, quarantine conditions, lifestyle, COVID-19 infection, and anxiety and depressive symptoms. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify factors associated with elevated anxiety or depressive symptoms. RESULTS: Out of 2331 participants, 762 (32.7%) experienced elevated anxiety or depressive symptoms. Nine risk factors associated with anxiety or depressive symptoms included younger age, reduced income, having cancer or other chronic diseases, having family members living with cancer, concerns related to COVID-19 infection for themselves or family members, living alone, having family conflicts, having <3 or >8 hours of sedentary time per day, and worsened sleep quality. CONCLUSIONS: The findings highlight an urgent need for psychological support for populations at high risk for elevated anxiety or depressive symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic.
