[Key public health challenges of the Chinese elderly in a new situation].

The results of the seventh national census in 2020 show that China is facing a severe new situation with a rapid increase in the number of the elderly, a huge base of oldest old population, a rapid rise in the elderly dependency ratio, empty-nest families gradually becoming the main form of elderly families, and a further intensification of aging in the future. The elderly has prominent health problems such as decline in physical health, impairment of functional status, malnutrition and mental health, which bring a series of challenges to public health system, geriatric friendly society and geriatric health standards in China. Facing the new situation, we should find out the health status and service needs of the elderly as soon as we can, and regularly monitor and evaluate the progress of response strategies, formulate laws, regulations and policies related to the elderly at the national level, establish a well-defined, innovative and coordinated health care service and long-term care service system for the elderly, promote the wide participation of the whole society to build age-friendly environments. Oriented to the health characteristics and needs of the elderly, we should carry out trials of health protection and intervention for the elderly, strengthen scientific research and technological innovation to serve the elderly multilayered health needs, take multiple measures to improve the guarantee capacity and level of health services for the elderly, and finally actively exploring the "Chinese experience" of Chinese public health system in dealing with population aging.

[The critical role of environmental health and disinfection in the prevention and control of COVID-19 pandemic].

In order to combat against COVID-19 pandemic, China has adopted a series of prevention and control measures such as case isolation, close contact tracking management, environmental health improvements, disinfection, and personal protection. At present, China has achieved remarkable results in the control of COVID-19. This article outlines the role of environmental health and disinfection in the prevention and control of COVID-19 and analyzes relevant policies and countermeasures, which has been proved effective and deserved for extensive implementation in this combat. Suggestions are also provided for the further development of this field.

[Suggestions on environmental and health work from Health Environment Promotion Campaigns].

The Health Environment Promotion Campaigns (HEPCs) focus on the major environmental health issues and relevant factors of concern among the general public, and promote the achievement of the national health goal. Based on the summary and analysis of the background, key indicators, specific actions in different domains of the HEPCs, this paper proposes suggestions for scientifically implementing HEPCs from five aspects, namely, formulating implementation plans, establishing pilot areas, building comprehensive service platforms, improving the health literacy of residents and strengthening the development of protection technologies and standards.

[Achievements and prospects on environmental health and sanitary engineering in China].

According to different epochs and development needs, a series of practices on environmental health and sanitary engineering were carried out, which played significant roles in promoting national economic and social developments and protecting the public health. This paper reviewed the main achievements in the past 70 years infields of patriotic health campaign, water sanitation and toilet improvement in rural areas, surveillance and investigation, health standard system, sanitary engineering equipment, stove improvement etc., and then proposed several prospects in the future.

[National health strategies in the world and its enlightenment to build healthy China].

The national health strategy is a reflection of a country on overall value and development vision of national health, and conducting this strategy will enhance and promote national development and people's welfare. In the current situation of building Healthy China during the 13th Five-Year Plan, it is important to learn experiences in this area from developed countries. This article mainly presents detailed introduction of the formulation, the implementation and the characteristics of National Health Strategies from the United States, United Kingdom and Japan, and also presents suggestions for the construction of Healthy China.

[Research progress in geriatric epidemiology in China].

Geriatric epidemiology deals with the application of epidemiological techniques to study the distribution and prevention of health status, diseases, and risk factors among the elderly, to develop intervention measures for promoting healthy ageing. The ageing of the population is a gradually developed phenomenon that is accelerating in China, geriatric epidemiology is one of the important branches of epidemiology and the major pillars of geriatric preventive medicine that play an important role in disease prevention and health promotion. In this article, we reviewed the recent Chinese studies in geriatric epidemiology, and synthesized the distributions and determinants of health-related status in Chinese elderly, and finally highlighted the future trends and expectations of the geriatric epidemiological research.
