RESUMO

Optical characteristics and molecular compositions of brown carbon (BrC) were investigated during winter 2019 at a rural site of China with a focus on nitro-aromatic compounds (NACs) and imidazoles (IMs). The abundance of gaseous nitrophenols relative to CO during the campaign maximized at noontime, being similar to O3, while the particulate NACs during the haze periods strongly correlated with toluene and NO2, suggesting that NACs in the region are largely formed from the gas-phase photooxidation. Strong correlations of particulate IMs in the dry haze periods with the mass ratio of EC/PM2.5 and the concentration of levoglucosan were observed, indicating that IMs during the dry events are largely derived from biomass burning emissions. However, an increase in IMs with the increasing aerosol liquid water content and pH was observed in the humid haze events, along with much lower abundances of levoglucosan and K+ relative to PM2.5, suggesting that IMs were mostly formed from aqueous reactions in the humid haze periods. These IMs exponentially increased with an increasing NH3 owing to an aqueous reaction of carbonyls with free ammonia. Our findings for the first time revealed an enhancing effect of ammonia on BrC formation in China, especially in humid haze periods.

To investigate the pollution characteristics and sources of atmospheric brown carbon (BrC) in Chongming Island, a background site of the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region in China, PM2.5 samples collected from December 2018 to January 2019 were analyzed to determine their chemical compositions and optical properties. The results showed that the light absorption coefficient (Abs365,M) of BrC extracted by methanol at 365 nm was (5.39±3.33) M-1·m-1, which was 1.3 times of the water extracted BrC. Both increased significantly with the increase of pH values, suggesting that less acidic conditions can enhance the light absorption ability of BrC. In winter, both Abs365 and MAE365 (mass absorption efficiency) were higher in the nighttime than in the daytime. A strong linear correlation observed between Abs365 and levoglucosan (R2=0.72) indicated that many light absorbing substances in Chongming Island were derived from biomass burning emissions. During the campaign, nitro-aromatic compounds (NACs) and PAHs accounted for (1.5±1.1) ng·m-3 and (8.3±4.7) ng·m-3, respectively, contributing to 0.1% and 0.067% of the absorption of the total BrC at 365 nm, respectively. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis further showed that biomass and fossil fuel combustions were the main sources of BrC in Chongming Island in winter, accounting for 56% of the total BrC, followed by secondary formation, accounting for 24% of the total BrC, with road dust contributing only 6%.

This study reveals the impact of biomass burning (BB) on secondary organic aerosols (SOA) formation in the North China Plain (NCP). Filter samples were analyzed for secondary inorganic aerosols (SIA), oxalic acid (C2) and related aqueous-phase SOA compounds (aqSOA), stable carbon isotope composition of C2 (δ13C(C2)) and aerosol liquid water content (ALWC). Based on the PM2.5 loadings, BB tracer concentrations, wildfire spots and air-mass back trajectories, we distinguished two episodes from the whole campaign, Episode I and Episode II, which were characteristic of regional and local BB, respectively. The abundances of PM2.5 and organic matter in the two events were comparable, but concentrations and fractions of SIA, aqSOA during Episode I were much higher than those during Episode II, along with heavier δ13C(C2), suggesting an enhanced aqSOA formation in the earlier period. We found that the enhancement of aqSOA formation during Episode I was caused by an increased ALWC, which was mainly driven by SIA during the regional BB event. Our work showed that intensive burning of crop residue in East Asia can sharply enhance aqSOA production on a large scale, which may have a significant impact on the regional climate and human health.

TSP and 9-stage size-segregated samples were simultaneously collected in Xi'an during the spring of 2013 and analyzed for organic aerosols (OA) on a molecular level. n-Alkanes were the dominant compound class during the whole campaign, followed by fatty acids. High molecular weight (HMW) n-alkanes and fatty acids dominated in the coarse mode particles (>1.1 µm) during the dust event, indicating they were mostly originated from surface soil and plants in the upwind regions. Low-volatile anthropogenic compounds such as benzo(e)pyrene (BeP) and bisphenol A (BPA) dominated in the fine mode particles during the whole campaign. In contrast, semi-volatile anthropogenic compounds such as phenanthrene (Phe) and di-n-butyl phthalates (DBP) showed a bimodal size distribution with a significant increase in the coarse mode during the dust event due to their vaporization from the fine mode particles and the subsequent adsorption on the dust surface. Secondary organic aerosols (SOA) in Xi'an during the dust storm period were predominantly enriched on the coarse particles, which can be ascribed to the adsorption and subsequent oxidation of gas-phase hydrophilic organics on the aqueous-phase of hygroscopic dust surface (e.g., mirabilite). Our work suggested an important role of multiphase reaction in evolution of aerosol chemistry during the dust long-range transport process.

BACKGROUND: This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the postoperative clinical outcomes and safety of the direct anterior approach (DAA) versus posterior approach (PA) in total hip arthroplasty (THA). METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, and Google databases from inception to June 2018 to select studies that compared the DAA and PA for THA. Only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included. Outcomes included Harris hip score at 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 12 weeks, and 1 year; VAS at 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h; incision length, operation time, postoperative blood loss, length of hospital stay, and complications (intraoperative fracture, postoperative dislocation, heterotopic ossification (HO), and groin pain). RESULTS: Nine RCTs totaling 754 THAs (DAA group = 377, PA group = 377) met the criteria to be included in this meta-analysis. The present meta-analysis indicated that, compared with PA group, DAA group was associated with an increase of the Harris hip score at the 2-week and 4-week time points. No significant difference was found between DAA and PA groups of the Harris hip scores at 12 weeks, 1 year length of hospital stay (p > 0.05). DAA group was associated with a reduction of the VAS at 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h with statistical significance (p < 0.05). What is more, DAA was associated with a reduction of the incision length and postoperative blood loss (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference between the operation time and complications (intraoperative fracture, postoperative dislocation, HO, and groin pain). CONCLUSION: In THA patients, compared with PA, DAA was associated with an early functional recovery and less pain scores. What is more, DAA was associated with shorter incision length and blood loss.

RESUMO

Diffuse uterine leiomyomatosis (DUL) is a rare and unique type of uterine leiomyoma which affects women of reproductive age. While treatments like medication, uterine artery embolization (UAE) and hysteroscopic myomectomy show some effectiveness, hysterectomy is currently the only known treatment capable of eliminating the symptoms of this disease. This case report demonstrates that high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) ablation may offer these patients a new treatment strategy that could control the symptoms of DUL and spare the uterus from hysterectomy.
