RESUMO

The adoption of environmentally-friendly habits has become more crucial in the present period as a means to mitigate the rate of environmental degradation and its detrimental consequences. The augmentation of sports, exercise and physical activities has been associated with favourable health outcomes, in addition to the ability to mitigate carbon emissions resulting from vehicular transportation. Consequently, the objective of this study is to examine the influence of sports, exercise, and physical activities, along with public health expenditure, on the environmental performance of China's coastal regions throughout the period spanning from 2010 to 2019. The proposed study employs the Feasible Generalized Least Squares (F.G.L.S) and the Generalized Method of Moments (G.M.M) methodologies. Results show that participation in sports and other forms of physical activity significantly improves environmental performance in China's coastal areas. Likewise, a robust negative correlation exists between air pollution and healthcare expenses, hence favouring enhanced environmental outcomes. Nevertheless, it is important to acknowledge that economic expansion has a direct correlation with increased emissions, hence harming environmental performance. There exists compelling evidence indicating a significant impact on environmental quality resulting from the combined influence of heightened health expenditures and increased engagement in sports. This is demonstrated by the presence of an interaction term between health expenses and sports activities. The findings of this study suggest that there is a requirement to re-evaluate healthcare spending initiatives and sporting activities in order to effectively pursue carbon neutrality goals and improve environmental sustainability.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep has been identified as an important factor in relation to physical activity-related injury (PARI) in adolescents. The study aimed to explore associations between sleep duration, sleep problems and PARI among Slovak adolescents in three different settings: sports clubs, leisure time and schools. METHODS: We analysed data from the cross-sectional Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study conducted in 2022 on a representative sample of 10 163 Slovak adolescents aged from 10.5 to 18.3 (mean age 13.4 (SD=1.5); 50.9% boys). Data were collected through self-administered online questionnaires completed by respondents in schools during the classes. Multiple logistic regression models were used to assess associations between sleep duration during schooldays and weekends, sleep problems and PARI in sports clubs, leisure time and schools. RESULTS: Adolescents with normal sleep duration during schooldays and those who reported no problems with falling asleep, waking up at night and day sleepiness had a higher chance of not being injured during PA in sports clubs, leisure time and schools compared with adolescents with short sleep duration and sleep problems. Sufficient sleep duration during the weekend increased the probability of not having PARI in leisure time and schools, with the strongest association between long sleep duration and PARI in leisure time. CONCLUSION: Good sleep quality and sufficient sleep duration were found to play a protective role in relation to PARI in adolescents. The findings suggest implementing sleep interventions in PARI prevention programmes, which must be considered a key component of adolescent PA promotion.

OBJECTIVES: Injury/poor health is an important barrier to women's participation in sport and physical activity. This study aimed to identify perceived challenges sport programme deliverers face when supporting physically inactive women to prevent/manage injury. METHODS: Sport programme deliverers, targeting physically inactive women in Victoria, participated in concept mapping to brainstorm, sort and rate (impact on their ability to prevent/manage injury, frequency of and difficulty to overcome the challenge on a 1 (low)-5 (high) scale) the challenges faced. Analysis included multidimensional scaling, hierarchical cluster analysis and descriptive statistics (eg, mean ratings). RESULTS: Twenty-five deliverers brainstormed 82 injury prevention/management-related challenges. An eight cluster map was considered the most appropriate representation of the participants' sorting data (mean cluster impact, frequency and difficulty to overcome rating (1-5)): time constraints (3.42, 3.69, 3.12); perceived competence in injury prevention/management (3.36, 3.50, 3.27); navigating participant perceptions and knowledge (3.35, 3.74, 3.49); information and responsibility (3.32, 3.50, 3.26); session planning and structure (3.25, 3.45, 3.07); participant engagement (3.13, 3.47, 3.08); responding to individual needs (3.07, 3.42, 2.92) and access to injury management resources (2.87, 3.25, 3.17). CONCLUSION: Limited time created injury prevention/management challenges for programme deliverers when planning and modifying sport programmes for physically inactive women. Injury prevention/management should be integrated into programme design and delivery principles. Programme deliverers need education/training and access to injury prevention/management resources (eg, activity modification) and engagement/communication strategies tailored for physically inactive women. Public health funders, coaching course accreditors, programme designers and deliverers can use these insights to develop strategies to minimise injury risk and effect systemic change in sport programme delivery.

OBJECTIVE: This process evaluation aimed to gain insight into the implementation of the VolleyVeilig Youth program by Dutch volleyball clubs within the context of an effectiveness trial. METHODS: We applied the UK Medical Research Council framework for process evaluations and assessed the context, implementation and mechanisms of impact. Trainers participating in the effectiveness trial were asked to complete a questionnaire at the end of the study. A subsample of the trainers based on the self-reported adherence score was invited to participate in an interview accordingly. We used a thematic analysis to present the data. RESULTS: Thirty-one trainers (100%) completed the questionnaire, and seven agreed to participate in an interview. Although adherence gradually decreased over the volleyball season, most trainers reported partially adhere with the program until the end of the study. The main themes included factors associated with the (1) VolleyVeilig Youth program, (2) trainer, (3) players, and (4) volleyball club. CONCLUSION: Although (partial) adherence to the VolleyVeilig Youth program was high in this study, implementation strategies must be developed to target the barriers reported by the trainers before the program can be successfully implemented nationwide in the Netherlands.

PURPOSE: Despite previous research supporting patient safety in sports after craniosynostosis surgery, parental anxiety remains high. This study sought to evaluate the role of healthcare providers in guiding patients and families through the decision-making process. METHODS: Parents of children with repaired craniosynostosis were asked to assess sports involvement and parental decision-making in children ages 6 and older. Questions were framed primarily on 5-point Likert scales. Sport categorizations were made in accordance with the American Academy of Pediatrics. Chi-squared, linear regression, and Pearson correlation tests were used to analyze associations between the questions. RESULTS: Forty-three complete parental responses were recorded. Mean ages at surgery and time of sports entry were 7.93 ± 4.73 months and 4.76 ± 2.14 years, respectively. Eighty-two percent of patients participated in a contact sport. Discussions with the primary surgeon were more impactful on parental decisions about sports participation than those with other healthcare providers (4.04 ± 1.20 vs. 2.69 ± 1.32). Furthermore, children whose parents consulted with the primary surgeon began participating in sports at a younger age (4.0 ± 1.0 vs. 5.8 ± 2.7 years, p = 0.034). The mean comfort level with contact sports (2.8 ± 1.4) was lower than that with limited-contact (3.8 ± 1.1, p = 0.0001) or non-contact (4.4 ± 1.3, p < 0.0001) sports. CONCLUSION: This study underscores the critical role that healthcare professionals, primarily surgeons, have in guiding families through the decision-making process regarding their children's participation in contact sports.

OBJECTIVE: Health disparities are widely prevalent; however, little has been done to examine and address their causes and effects in sports and exercise medicine (SEM). We aimed to summarise the focus areas and methodology used for existing North American health disparity research in SEM and to identify gaps in the evidence base. DESIGN: Scoping review. DATA SOURCES: Systematic literature search of PubMed, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, CINAHL Plus with Full Text, Web of Science Core Collection and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Full-text, peer-reviewed manuscripts of primary research, conducted in North America; published in the year 2000 or after, in English; and focusing on organised sports were included. RESULTS: 103 articles met inclusion criteria. Articles were classified into five focus areas: access to and participation in sports (n=45), access to SEM care (n=28), health-related outcomes in SEM (n=24), provider representation in SEM (n=5) and methodology (n=1). Race/ethnicity (n=39), socioeconomic status (n=28) and sex (n=27) were the most studied potential causes of health disparities, whereas sexual orientation (n=5), location (rural/urban/suburban, n=5), education level (n=5), body composition (n=5), gender identity (n=4) and language (n=2) were the least studied. Most articles (n=74) were cross-sectional, conducted on youth (n=55) and originated in the USA (n=90). CONCLUSION: Health disparity research relevant to SEM in North America is limited. The overall volume and breadth of research required to identify patterns in a heterogeneous sports landscape, which can then be used to inform positive change, need expansion. Intentional research focused on assessing the intersectionality, causes and consequences of health disparities in SEM is necessary.

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the implementation of Prep-to-Play PRO, an injury prevention programme for women's elite Australian Football League (AFLW). METHODS: The Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation and Maintenance (RE-AIM) of Prep-to-Play PRO were assessed based on the proportion of AFLW players and/or staff who: were aware of the programme (R), believed it may reduce anterior cruciate ligament injury (E), attempted to implement any/all programme components (A), implemented all intended components as practically as possible (I) and intended future programme implementation (M). Quantitative and qualitative data were triangulated to assess 58 RE-AIM items (evidence of yes/no/unsure/no evidence) and the 5 RE-AIM dimensions (fully achieved=evidence of yes on >50% dimension items, partially achieved=50% of items evidence of yes and 50% unsure or 50% mix of unsure and unanswered, or not met=evidence of yes on <50% dimension items). RESULTS: Multiple sources including AFLW training observations (n=7 total), post-implementation surveys (141 players, 25 staff), semistructured interviews (19 players, 13 staff) and internal programme records (9 staff) contributed to the RE-AIM assessment. After the 2019 season, 8 of 10 (80%) AFLW clubs fully met all five RE-AIM dimensions. All 10 clubs participating in the AFLW fully achieved the reach (R) dimension. One club partially achieved the implementation (I) dimension, and one club partially achieved the effectiveness (E) and adoption (A) dimensions. CONCLUSION: The Prep-to-Play PRO injury prevention programme for the AFLW achieved high implementation, possibly due to the programme's deliberately flexible approach coupled with our pragmatic definition of implementation. Engaging key stakeholders at multiple ecological levels (organisation, coaches, athletes) throughout programme development and implementation likely enhanced programme implementation.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the beliefs and perceptions of professional female footballers and staff regarding injury prevention and performance protection in professional women's football. METHODS: This qualitative study applied semistructured interviews with 18 participants from 3 top-tier teams from 2 countries (Portugal and England) and 4 nationalities, including 2 physiotherapists, 5 players, 3 team doctors, 2 head coaches, 3 strength and conditioning coaches, 2 managers, and 1 head of performance. Data analysis applied constant comparison analysis, using principles of grounded theory. There were no major differences in the perspectives of players and staff, and the findings are presented together. RESULTS: Identifying and reporting injuries and recognising potential injury risk factors were mentioned to influence the prevention of injury. Participants stated that the growth and evolution of women's football could influence injury risk. Before reaching the professional level, exposure to potential risk factors, such as lack of recovery, limited awareness and opportunities for prevention (eg, preventive exercises and load management strategies), was believed to impact players' injury risk. Players further described their experiences and the 'bumpy road' to becoming a professional player, their current context and potential future improvements for women's football regarding injury prevention and performance protection. CONCLUSION: Professional female football players face different injury risks during different moments of their careers. According to elite players and staff, amateur and semiprofessionals have limited resources and lack injury prevention strategies. Professional players and staff perceived the current preventive measures as good and relied on the value of individualised care and a multidisciplinary approach. In the future, more resources and structured injury prevention strategies are needed in youth and non-professional levels of women's football to reduce injury risk and allow more players to reach their maximal performance.

Local governments may play a key role in making outdoor sports clubs smoke free. This study aims to assess the activities, motives, challenges and strategies of Dutch municipalities regarding stimulating outdoor sports clubs to become smoke free. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 19 policy officers of different municipalities in the Netherlands. The included municipalities varied in terms of region, population size and degree of urbanization. Data were analyzed using content analysis. Municipalities stimulated sports clubs to become smoke free by providing information and support and, to a lesser extent, by using financial incentives. Motives of municipalities varied from facilitating a healthy living environment for youth, responding to denormalization of smoking and aligning with goals formulated in national prevention policy. Policy officers faced several challenges, including limited capacity and funds, a reluctance to interfere with sports clubs and little support within the municipal organization. These challenges were addressed by employing various strategies such as embedding smoke-free sports in a broader preventive policy, setting a good example by creating outdoor smoke-free areas around municipal buildings, and collaborating with stakeholders in the municipality to join forces in realizing smoke-free sports clubs. Municipalities demonstrated evident motivation to contribute to a smoke-free sports environment. Currently, most municipalities fulfil an informative and supportive role, while some municipalities still explore their role and position in relation to supporting sports clubs to become smoke free. Other municipalities have established, according to them, effective strategies.

AIMS: To evaluate the association of basic life support with survival after sports-related sudden cardiac arrest (SR-SCA). METHODS AND RESULTS: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, a search of several databases from each database inception to 31 July 2021 without language restrictions was conducted. Studies were considered eligible if they evaluated one of three scenarios in patients with SR-SCA: (i) bystander presence, (ii) bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), or (iii) bystander automated external defibrillator (AED) use and provided information on survival. Risk of bias was evaluated using Risk of Bias in Non-randomized Studies of Interventions. The primary outcome was survival at the longest follow up. The meta-analysis was conducted using the random-effects model. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluations (GRADE) approach was used to rate certainty in the evidence. In total, 28 non-randomized studies were included. The meta-analysis showed significant benefit on survival in all three groups: bystander presence [odds ratio (OR) 2.55, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.48-4.37; I2 = 25%; 9 studies-988 patients], bystander CPR (OR 3.84, 95% CI 2.36-6.25; I2 = 54%; 23 studies-2523 patients), and bystander AED use (OR 5.25, 95% CI 3.58-7.70; I2 = 16%; 19 studies-1227 patients). The GRADE certainty of evidence was judged to be moderate. CONCLUSION: In patients with SR-SCA, bystander presence, bystander CPR, and bystander AED use were significantly associated with survival. These results highlight the importance of witness intervention and encourage countries to develop their first aid training policy and AED installation in sport settings.

PURPOSE: Trochleoplasty has become increasingly utilised to address patellar instability in the setting of severe trochlear dysplasia. There remains a paucity of literature on the outcomes of 'thick'- versus 'thin'-osteochondral flap trochleoplasty. The purpose of this study is to compare clinical and radiographic outcomes between patients with patellar instability with symptomatic trochlear dysplasia treated using a 'thick' versus 'thin' osteochondral flap trochleoplasty. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines using a PRISMA checklist. Quality assessment of final articles was conducted by two blinded reviewers. Articles were separated based on the use of a 'thick' versus 'thin' flap trochleoplasty. Data collection consisted of recording the following variables: patient demographics, indications for trochleoplasty, mean follow-up time, additional procedures performed during trochleoplasty, patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), radiographic outcomes (tibial tubercle-trochlear groove [TT-TG] distance, Caton-Deschamps Index [CDI] and sulcus angle [SA]) and the incidence of any postoperative complications and patellar redislocation rates. RESULTS: A total of 24 studies, consisting of 927 patients, were identified as meeting inclusion criteria. A total of five papers described a 'thick' flap technique, while 19 papers described the use of a 'thin' flap technique. No significant difference in the mean improvement of Kujala scores was appreciated when comparing 'thick' versus 'thin' techniques (p > 0.05). Improvements in mean radiographic outcomes based on TT-TG, CDI and SA were observed in both 'thick' and 'thin' flap trochleoplasty groups. The overall redislocation rate was 0.35%. CONCLUSION: No significant difference in Kujala scores was observed in patients undergoing trochleoplasty utilising 'thick' versus 'thin' technique, while improvements in mean TT-TG, CDI and SA were noted in both technique groups, with an overall redislocation rate of 0.35%. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level IV.

OBJECTIVES: Traumatic dental injury occurs during sports competitions, training, and practice and can be prevented by the use of mouthguards. For this reason, this study aimed to evaluate the knowledge and attitudes of sports science faculty students, physical education teachers, and athletes about mouthguards. METHODS: Five hundred thirty-two participants were reached via social media. In the questionnaire consisting of 20 questions, questions about the sociodemographic characteristics of the participants were asked in part 1, and questions about their level of knowledge and attitudes about the mouthguards were asked in part 2. Descriptive statistical analysis and a chi-square test were used to evaluate the data. RESULTS: The number of people who think that mouthguards protect the athlete from traumatic dental injury is 381 (71.6%). The number of people who think that mouthguards affect the performance of the athlete is positively 228 (42.9%). To protect against traumatic dental injury, 51.48% of the participants preferred the custom-made; 39.3% of them preferred the boil-bite; 33.22% of them preferred the standard/stock type mouth guard; and 22.96% of them preferred the helmet, and 18.26% of them preferred the face mask. CONCLUSIONS: The knowledge and attitude of sports science faculty students, physical education teachers, and athletes are low about mouthguards. Since these people who are engaged in sports have a high exposure to traumatic dental injuries, education should be given to increase their awareness about mouthguards.

Food and fluid supply is fundamental for optimal athletic performance but can also be a risk factor for caries, dental erosion, and periodontal diseases, which in turn can impair athletic performance. Many studies have reported a high prevalence of oral diseases in elite athletes, notably dental caries 20-84%, dental erosion 42-59%, gingivitis 58-77%, and periodontal disease 15-41%, caused by frequent consumption of sugars/carbohydrates, polyunsaturated fats, or deficient protein intake. There are three possible major reasons for poor oral health in athletes which are addressed in this review: oxidative stress, sports diet, and oral hygiene. This update particularly summarizes potential sports nutritional effects on athletes' dental health. Overall, sports diet appropriately applied to deliver benefits for performance associated with oral hygiene requirements is necessary to ensure athletes' health. The overall aim is to help athletes, dentists, and nutritionists understand the tangled connections between sports diet, oral health, and oral healthcare to develop mitigation strategies to reduce the risk of dental diseases due to nutrition.

Sexualized Violence Toward Children and Adolescents: The Visibility and Implementation of Safeguarding Concepts in Sports, Music, and Church Abstract: Objective: In 2010, the disclosure of sexualized violence in educational organizations led to a public debate and calls for safeguarding concepts against sexualized violence toward children and adolescents. However, there have been few efforts to systematically record the visibility, availability, and implementation of such concepts. We used a broad Google search and a telephone survey as an initial approach to close this research gap. Method: In a systematic Google search and a telephone survey (N = 50), we identified and examined safeguarding concepts against sexualized violence toward children and adolescents in the context of religious organizations, sports, and musical education regarding its visibility, availability, and implementation level. Results: The results of our systematic internet research show a low hit rate of identified safeguarding concepts in all contexts. The low number of search hits indicates that the issue of sexualized violence toward children and adolescents has been inadequately addressed in many institutions, and that protective measures have been neglected. The supplementary results of the telephone survey suggest a low implementation level within organizations and a low availability of existing safeguarding concepts.

Athletes can also cause damage to some parts of their body during training, so specialized preparation activities should be carried out before athlete training to reduce the damage caused to the athlete's body, allowing the stressed parts to move and distribute the load. Excessive recovery has a significant effect on improving the performance level of the athletes studied and preventing sports injuries. This article studies the data analysis of body recovery and injury prevention in physical education teaching based on wearable devices. Real time collection of students' exercise data, including indicators such as exercise volume, heart rate, steps, distance, etc., by wearing wearable devices. By using Internet of Things technology to transmit data to cloud servers, data analysis and mining techniques are used to process the data and study issues related to body recovery and injury prevention. Specifically, this article adopts methods such as time series analysis, machine learning algorithms, and artificial neural networks to analyze the relationship between exercise data and body recovery and injury prevention, providing scientific guidance and support for physical education teaching. This method can monitor students' exercise data in real-time, predict the risk of physical recovery and injury, and provide corresponding prevention and guidance suggestions.

This system is mainly composed of sensors, smart phones and cloud servers. Basketball is a high-intensity sport, and sports injuries often occur. Therefore, how to monitor the sports status of basketball players in real time, discover and prevent the occurrence of sports injuries in time, has become an urgent problem for athletes and coaches. In this paper, a motion capture system based on CNN sensor is proposed. Through the application of sensor, real-time monitoring of athletes' motion state, the system can collect athletes' movement track, speed, acceleration, stride frequency, heart rate, energy consumption and other parameters in real time. By analyzing the movement data, it can timely warn and deal with the occurrence of sports injuries. In this paper, convolutional neural network (CNN) is used to process and analyze motion data, so that the motion capture system has higher precision and accuracy. Through the training and optimization of CNN, the system can identify and analyze motion data more accurately, and improve the performance and effect of the motion capture system. The motion capture system based on CNN sensor can realize real-time monitoring and prevention of sports injuries for basketball players, provide more comprehensive, scientific and real-time sports data for athletes and coaches, help them better conduct training and adjust tactics, and improve the competitive level and safety of basketball games.

The use of green intelligent sensing systems which are based on triboelectric nanogenerators have sparked a surge of research in recent years. The development has made significant contributions to the field of promoting human health. However, the integration of an intelligent sensing system with multi-directional triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) remains challenges in the field of motion monitoring. To solve this research issue, this study designed a self-powered multifunctional fitness blanket (SF-MFB) which incorporates four TENGs, features multi-sensors and wireless motion monitoring capabilities. It presents a self-powered integrated sensing system which utilizes four TENG sensing units to monitor human motion. Each TENG sensing unit collects the mechanical energy generated during motion. The system is composed of SF-MFB, Bluetooth transmission terminal, and upper computer analysis terminal. Its main purpose is to wirelessly monitor and diagnose human sports skills and enables real-time human-computer interaction. The TENG integrated self-powered sensing system demonstrates practicality in sports skills monitoring, diagnosis, human-computer interaction and entertainment. This research introduces a novel approach for the application of TENG self-powered intelligent integrated sensing system in health promotion.

INTRODUCTION: Core abdominal injury (CAI) is a broad term that describes injuries resulting from repetitive loading of the pubis that leads to inflammation, rupture, or destabilization of the core muscles from the pubic bone. There is no clear recommendation on the surgical approach to CAI. We aimed to describe how hernia surgeons within the Abdominal Core Health Quality Collaborative (ACHQC) address this problem surgically and the short-term outcomes. METHODS: We queried the ACHQC registry for patients undergoing surgery for isolated CAI and concomitant inguinal hernias (IH) and CAI. Operative approach and quality of life (using EuraHS survey scores) was abstracted. RESULTS: A total of 29,451 patients underwent surgery for IHs, CAIs, or both within the registry. Twenty patients underwent surgery for isolated CAI (median age 29, 90% males). Eleven patients (55%) underwent surgery with mesh (four Lichtenstein, three TAPP, and four TEP). Nine patients (45%) underwent tissue-based repairs (four closure of floor, one Bassini, one McVay, one Shouldice, one femoral exploration, and one laparoscopic-to-open conversion). There were no postoperative complications or reoperations within 30 days. EuraHS scores showed improvement at 30 days from baseline (median 29 [6.75-41.75] from 42 [29.42-57.61]). Sixty patients had both IHs and CAIs (median age 31, 97% males). All patients received mesh. Thirty-one patients (52%) underwent open surgery (23 Lichtenstein, 1 plug, 7 TREPP) and 29 underwent minimally invasive repairs (23 TAPP, 6 TEP). There was one seroma at 30 days. EuraHS scores showed improvement at 30 days from baseline (median 16 [5.17-27.33] from 37.5 [26.44-46.58]). CONCLUSIONS: Despite technical variability, CAIs with or without concomitant IH generally undergo operations commonly used for IH repairs. Within our series, there was inconsistency with approach and mesh placement. Future work should be focused on standardizing the approach to CAI and capturing long-term data within the ACHQC.
