Training the trainer: An educational course for training pain nursing specialists supported by the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP).

To train pain nursing specialists through a pain education program, 20 nurses from six hospitals in Shanghai Province and seven in six provinces of China received the training of 2-month pain education and 4-month clinical practice. This nonrandomized pilot study examined the results of tests before and after the program, case report evaluations, future plan evaluations, clinical practice, and satisfaction questionnaire. After the program, the score of the test increased significantly compared with that before the program (44.1 ± 3.19; paired-sample t = 10.363; p < .0001). All of the participants thought that the program had broadened their vision, 19 (95%) thought that the program had raised the level of their theoretical knowledge in pain management, 17 (85%) thought that the program had improved their skills in clinical practice, and 15 (75%) thought that the program had played a role in enhancing their research abilities. Considering the whole program, most students (n = 17; 85%) were quite satisfied, and 3 (15%) were simply satisfied. By content analysis of the opening questions, we found that the participants had deeper and broader ideas about nurses' role and pain nursing specialists' responsibilities in pain management. The program improved nurses' attitudes, knowledge, and skills in pain management. The participants recognized pain nursing specialists' responsibilities in pain management more clearly.

Demographic trends and expected changes regarding future health care require substantial structural reforms of the German health care system. It is generally assumed that nursing education and training as well as curriculum development and also the competencies of professional nurses must adapt to the changing demands of health care supply. Moreover, the expected shortage of general practitioners demands solutions for easing their growing workload, which will include the assignment of certain services to health care professionals which perform these services autonomously or in behalf of the practitioner. Consequently, nurses have to expand their scope of skills and expertise. In order to prepare nurses for their new and extended roles, different curricula for professional and academic educational programmes are currently developed. If nurses are to perform additional tasks, it is essential to delegate some of their regular duties to health care assistants. Consequently the latter must be included in the reform process since their current range of duties will be modified as well.

Nurses' responsibility to improve practice.

It is the responsibility of every nurse--from novice to expert--to improve practice. ANNA provides nephrology nurses with QI resources through publications, educational presentations, and networking with peers. As Wick (2009) notes, if QI principles are being practiced consistently and correctly, patients, families, doctors, staff, surveyors, and payers are more satisfied with the services and care provided, and patient outcomes improve and are sustained.

The status of rural nursing in Australia: 12 years on.

In 1996 Hegney published a seminal review of the literature concerning the status of Australian rural nurses. This article updates and expands that original paper by reporting on an integrative review exploring the same topic area between the years 1996 and 2008. Findings show that definitions of rural nursing are now integrated with those of remote nursing on a continuum of distance and contextual difference. The role and function of rural nurses is examined, along with a discussion of the importance of a primary health care approach in meeting community needs. The influence of social determinants of health is explored in this context. The culture of rural health workplaces in relation to the role and function of rural nurses is also a feature of this review. Research into the rural nursing workforce and, in particular, the recruitment and retention of staff are examined, with the high attrition rate of new or novice rural nurses pinpointed as a common theme in these studies. Important legislative changes that have affected rural nursing practice are also identified. This article concludes with a discussion of the latest research into Australian rural nursing, focusing on education in rural universities and the potential to develop new or novice nurses through the development of supportive relationships.

Pre-registration nursing education standards out for consultation.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council is developing new standards for pre-registration nursing education. This article discusses the areas in which significant changes to the existing standards are to be made and outlines what these changes may mean for the workforce, particularly mentors and managers.

Advancing the practice of nursing through specialty fellowship development for pediatric nurse practitioners.

Fellowship training for physicians has historically been a training model for physicians to specialize their practice and develop research skills following medical school and residency. Advanced practice registered nurses, specifically nurse practitioners (NPs) practice in primary care, acute care, and specialty settings across the lifespan. Fellowship programs have emerged as a way for NPs to specialize their practice and meet the needs of an expanding health care system. This article describes the design, implementation, and outcomes of two similar yet distinct specialty NP fellowship programs: one in Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics and one in Pediatric Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

The transition of care into the community gives rise to the auditing and examination of custom and practices. This article describes how the community cardiology specialist nursing team at Sunderland Teaching PCT. have audited the practice of home visiting for acute myocardial infarction patients following discharge from hospital. The aim of the audit was to examine current practices and to consider whether or not other nursing teams have the skills to deliver this service thus enabling the specialist nurses to develop their skills further and develop nurse led initiatives to support the national service framework for coronary heart disease.

Resumo Objetivo descrever as relações entre objetivos, conteúdos e métodos de ensino em subáreas de conhecimento de Enfermagem a partir do consenso de professores especialistas. Método estudo Delphi em quatro rodadas. Participaram 112 professores de cursos de graduação de Instituições de Ensino Superior públicas do Brasil divididos em sete painéis por subárea. Os dados foram analisados pela técnica de Análise de Conteúdo à luz dos conceitos de conhecimento dos objetivos e conhecimento pedagógico de conteúdo de Shulman, transformados nas variáveis qualitativas de interesse, objetivos, conteúdos e métodos de ensino em torno das quais foi buscado consenso. Resultados somente as subáreas Enfermagem em Saúde Coletiva e Enfermagem na Gestão e Gerenciamento acordaram objetivos. Conteúdos acertados foram relacionados às políticas públicas e aos programas do Sistema Único de Saúde. Métodos sugerem a coexistência de tradição e inovação. Conclusões e implicações para a prática a tomada de consciência das relações entre os objetivos, conteúdos e métodos utilizados pelos professores impacta a promoção do diálogo e a integração entre as subáreas, implicando, na prática, uma formação profissional potencializada ou frágil em qualidade resolutiva de problemas de saúde.

Resumen Objetivo describir las relaciones entre objetivos, contenidos y métodos de enseñanza en subáreas del conocimiento de Enfermería a partir del consenso de profesores especialistas. Método estudio Delphi en cuatro rondas. Participaron 112 profesores de cursos de pregrado de instituciones públicas de educación superior de Brasil, divididos en siete paneles por subárea. Los datos fueron analizados mediante la técnica de Análisis de Contenido a la luz de los conceptos de conocimiento de los objetivos y conocimiento pedagógico del contenido de Shulman, transformados en variables cualitativas de interés, objetivos, contenidos y métodos de enseñanza en torno a los cuales se buscó el consenso. Resultados solo las subáreas Enfermería en salud colectiva y Enfermería en gestión y Gerenciamiento acordaron objetivos. Los contenidos del consenso se relacionaron con las políticas públicas y los programas del Sistema Único de Salud. Los métodos sugieren la coexistencia de la tradición e innovación. Conclusiones e implicaciones para la práctica la conciencia de la relación entre los objetivos, contenidos y métodos empleados por los docentes incide en la promoción del diálogo y la integración entre las subáreas, implicando en la práctica una formación profesional potencializada o frágil en términos de resolución de problemas de salud.

Abstract Aim to describe the relationships among objectives, content, and teaching methods in subfields of Nursing knowledge from the consensus of expert professors. Methods a Delphi study in four rounds. Participants were 112 professors from undergraduate courses at public Higher Education Institutions in Brazil divided into seven panels by subarea. The data were analyzed using the Content Analysis technique in light of Shulman's concepts of knowledge of objectives and pedagogical knowledge of content, transformed into the qualitative variables of interest, objectives, content and teaching methods, around which consensus was sought. Results only the subareas of Collective Health Nursing and Nursing in Management and Administration agreed on objectives. Agreed contents were related to public policies and programs of the Unified Health System. Methods suggest the coexistence of tradition and innovation. Conclusions and implications for practice the awareness of the relationships among the objectives, contents, and methods used by the professors impacts the promotion of dialogue and the integration among the subareas, implying, in practice, a potentiated or fragile professional formation in resolute quality of health problems.
