RESUMO

A compilation of new advances made in the research field of laboratory reaction kinetics in China's Key Development Project for Air Pollution Formation Mechanism and Control Technologies was presented. These advances are grouped into six broad, interrelated categories, including volatile organic compound (VOC) oxidation, secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation, new particle formation (NPF) and gas-particle partitioning, ozone chemistry, model parameters, and secondary inorganic aerosol (SIA) formation, highlighting the laboratory work done by Chinese researchers. For smog chamber applications, the current knowledge gained from laboratory studies is reviewed, with emphasis on summarizing the oxidation mechanisms of long-chain alkanes, aromatics, alkenes, aldehydes/ketones in the atmosphere, SOA formation from anthropogenic emission sources, and oxidation of aromatics, isoprene, and limonene, as well as SIA formation. For flow tube applications, atmospheric oxidation mechanisms of toluene and methacrolein, SOA formation from limonene oxidation by ozone, gas-particle partitioning of peroxides, and sulfuric acid-water (H2SO4-H2O) binary nucleation, methanesulfonic acid-water (MSA-H2O) binary nucleation, and sulfuric acid-ammonia-water (H2SO4-NH3-H2O) ternary nucleation are discussed.

Limonene, mainly found as a major component in Citrus spp., has been proven to possess a valuable potential as sustainable replacement to synthetic pesticides and food preservatives. This review intends to give a clear overview of the principal emerging applications of limonene in the agri-food industry as antimicrobial, herbicidal and antioxidant agent. To successfully use limonene in a greener agri-food industry, its preservation had become a top concern for manufacturers. In order to elucidate the most efficient and sustainable manner to encapsulate limonene, the different techniques and materials tested up to the present are also reviewed. In general, encapsulation conserves and protects limonene from outside aggressions, but also allows its controlled release as well as enhances its low water solubility, which can be critical for the discussed applications. Other parameters such as scalability, low cost and availability of equipment will need to be taken into account. Further efforts would likely be oriented to the elucidation of encapsulating sustainable systems obtained by cost-efficient elaboration processes, which can deliver effective concentrations of limonene without affecting crops and food products.

People in these days spend approximately 6 % of their time in a means of transport. Air fresheners are frequently used in vehicles to mask odors; however, they can cause adverse health effects such as cardiovascular disease, systemic inflammation and autonomic dysfunction. This study aimed to identify the effects of air fresheners on the concentrations of particulate and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in different vehicle cabins. Scanning mobility and optical particle sizers were used for the particle measurements. VOCs (e.g., BTEX and d-limonene) were collected using a Tenax TA. The products were sprayed for less than a minute. The study assessed three spray products (all trigger types), vehicle size (small, medium, and large), cabin temperature (10 °C, 20 °C, and 25 °C), and in-vehicle ventilation mode (all-off, recirculation, and external inflow modes). The particle concentration increased rapidly during the 1-min spraying of the products. The proportion of nanoparticles in the front seat (67.2 % ± 2.2 %) was 11.1 % ± 2.2 % lower than that in the rear seat (75.6 % ± 2.1 %). The spray product and vehicle size did not significantly affect the particle or VOC concentrations. With an increase in the temperature of the front seat, the proportion of nanoparticles increased by 25.3 % ± 3.2 %. Moreover, the maximum total VOC concentrations (front seat: 364.3 µg/m3; back seat: 241.3 µg/m3) were observed at 20 °C. Under in-vehicle ventilation, recirculation effectively reduced the overall particle concentration within the cabin; however, the generated VOCs circulated. The external inflow proved effective in cabin air purification by reducing the total VOC concentration to 56.0-57.2 % compared with other ventilation modes. These findings provide substantial insight into the persistence of particles and the dynamics of their dispersion, thereby enabling informed decision-making for particle-related risk management.

In this study, the degradation of d-limonene by photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) (titanium dioxide [TiO2]/ultraviolet [UV]) and by the combination of PCO and ozone (O3) (TiO2/UV/O3) was investigated to evaluate the enhancement effect of O3. The degradation of d-limonene by UV/O3 was also investigated for comparison. The experiments were conducted with a quartz photoreactor under various gas flow rates (600-1600 mL min(-1)), d-limonene concentrations (0.5-9 parts per million [ppm]), and relative humidity (RH) (20-80%). The d-limonene removal efficiency of TiO2/UV/O3, TiO2/UV, and UV/O3 ranged from 62 to 99%, from 49 to 99%, and from 46 to 75%, respectively. The addition of 120-ppb O3 can enhance the d-limonene removal efficiency of PCO up to 12%. The apparent kinetic parameters (apparent rate constants, kapparent and Langmuir adsorption constants, Kapparent of TiO2/UV and TiO2/UV/O3 reactions obtained from fitting Langmuir-Hinshelwood models are TiO2/UV: kapparent = 1.45 x 10(-3) ppm-m sec(-1), Kapparent = 0.34 ppm(-1); TiO2/ UV/O3: kapparent = 1.83 x 10(-3) ppm-m sec(-1), and Kapparent = 0.35 ppm(-1). When RH was higher than 40%, the residual intermediates yield rates of d-limonene of TiO2/UV/O3, TiO2/UV, and UV/O3 reactions ranged from 0.39 to 0.51 micromol carbon m(-2) sec(-1), 0.56 to 1.96 micromol carbon m(-2) sec(-1), and 157 to 177 micromol carbon m(-3) sec(-1), respectively. In the photocatalytic reaction experiments, the addition of 120-parts per billion (ppb) O3 can reduce the residual intermediates yield rates of d-limonene by up to 1.46 micromol carbon m(-2) sec(-1). These experimental results showed that O3 can enhance the effectiveness of photocatalysis on the removal of d-limonene.

Natural products obtained in dietary components may aid the prevention and treatment of a variety of diseases. Reports in the scientific literature have demonstrated that the consumption of terpenes is a successful alternative in the treatment of several diseases, triggering beneficial biological effects in clinical and preclinical studies. The monoterpene limonene is largely used in alimentary items, cleaning products, and it is one of the most frequent fragrances used in cosmetics formulation. The therapeutic effects of limonene have been extensively studied, proving anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antinociceptive, anticancer, antidiabetic, antihyperalgesic, antiviral, and gastroprotective effects, among other beneficial effects in health. In this review, we collected, presented, and analyzed evidence from the scientific literature regarding the usage of limonene and its activities and underlying mechanisms involved in combating diseases. The highlighting of limonene applications could develop a useful targeting of innovative research in this field as well as the development of a limonene-based phytomedicine which could be used in a variety of conditions of health and disease.

The aim of this study was to improve the antifungal activity of the volatile Litsea cubeba essential oil and its main components (citral and limonene) on brown rice snack bars by applying He-Ne laser treatment. Different volumes (50-200 µL) of L. cubeba, citral or limonene were absorbed into a filter paper and placed inside an oven (18 L). Ten brown rice snack bars (2 cm wide × 4 cm long × 0.5 cm deep) were put in an oven and heated at 180 °C for 20 min. The shelf-life of the treated snack bars at 30 °C was assessed and sensory testing was carried out to investigate their consumer acceptability. A count of total phenolic content (TPC) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) on the properties of essential oil, citral, and limonene before and after the laser treatment was studied for possible modes of action. It was found that the laser treatment improved the antifungal activity of the examined volatile L. cubeba and citral with Aspergillus flavus inhibition by 80% in comparison with those of the control not treated with the laser. L. cubeba vapor at 100 µL with the laser treatment was found to completely inhibit the growth of natural molds on the snack bars for at least 25 days; however, without essential oil vapor and laser treatment, naturally contaminating mold was observed in 3 days. Results from the sensory tests showed that the panelists were unable to detect flavor and aroma differences between essential oil treatment and the control. Laser treatment caused an increase in TPC of citral oil whereas the TPC in limonene showed a decrease after the laser treatment. These situations could result from the changing peak of the aliphatic hydrocarbons that was revealed by the FTIR spectra.

The preponderance of evidence suggests a role for fat and alcohol as risk factors for breast cancer. The role of milk is more controversial with some studies suggesting that milk is a risk factor and others that consumption of milk is protective against breast cancer. No other major nutrient appears to play a significant role in increasing breast cancer risk. On the other hand, there is increasing evidence that a variety of micronutrients and hormones appear to have significant anticancer activity. These range from steroids such as dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and its analysis to indoles, isothiocyanates, and isoflavone derivatives. These compounds act directly by interfering with cyclins and promoting apoptosis as well as indirectly by altering estrogen metabolism in a favorable direction. These effects are not merely theoretical actions in cell culture and tissue explants; they have been demonstrated in human patients as a range of studies have demonstrated.

PURPOSE: D-Limonene is a natural monoterpene with pronounced chemotherapeutic activity and minimal toxicity in preclinical studies. A phase I clinical trial to assess toxicity, the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) and pharmacokinetics in patients with advanced cancer was followed by a limited phase II evaluation in breast cancer. METHODS: A group of 32 patients with refractory solid tumors completed 99 courses of D-limonene 0.5 to 12 g/m2 per day administered orally in 21-day cycles. Pharmacokinetics were analyzed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Ten additional breast cancer patients received 15 cycles of D-limonene at 8 g/m2 per day. Intratumoral monoterpene levels were measured in two patients. RESULTS: The MTD was 8 g/m2 per day; nausea, vomiting and diarrhea were dose limiting. One partial response in a breast cancer patient on 8 g/m2 per day was maintained for 11 months; three patients with colorectal carcinoma had prolonged stable disease. There were no responses in the phase II study. Peak plasma concentration (Cmax) for D-limonene ranged from 10.8+/-6.7 to 20.5+/-11.2 microM. Predominant circulating metabolites were perillic acid (Cmax 20.7+/-13.2 to 71+/-29.3 microM), dihydroperillic acid (Cmax 16.6+/-7.9 to 28.1+/-3.1 microM), limonene-1,2-diol (Cmax 10.1+/-8 to 20.7+/-8.6 microM), uroterpenol (Cmax 14.3+/-1.5 to 45.1+/-1.8 microM), and an isomer of perillic acid. Both isomers of perillic acid, and cis and trans isomers of dihydroperillic acid were in urine hydrolysates. Intratumoral levels of D-limonene and uroterpenol exceeded the corresponding plasma levels. Other metabolites were trace constituents in tissue. CONCLUSIONS: D-Limonene is well tolerated in cancer patients at doses which may have clinical activity. The favorable toxicity profile supports further clinical evaluation.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effect of mucoregulatory agents during endoscopic sinus surgery. METHOD: Ninety-seven cases with chronic rhinosinusitis were randomly divided into three groups, with 31 cases in B group treated by ambroxol, 33 cases in C group treated by eucalyptol-limonene-pinene enteric soft capsule and 33 cases in control group (A group). The follow-up visit lasted for 6 months for three groups. Then, the therapeutic effects were evaluated and compared among these three groups. RESULT: By the end of 6 months after treatment,the effective rate was 90.3% and 97.0% for cases in the B and C groups respectively, and only 75.8% in A group. The difference between A and C was statistically significant (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Eucalyptol-limonene-pinene enteric soft capsule,as a multicomponent mucoregulatory agent, can obviously improve the secretion of mucosa and epithelial recovery, thus accelerate healing of the disease. It can also improve the success rate of functional endoscope sinus surgery, and may play a promising role in clinical application.
