RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Even though there has been a cultural change within residential aged care to a more person-centered care, there remain improvements to be made for a more consistent way of working. Using a salutogenic approach along with person-centered care is a potential way to promote it. This study aimed to describe nurses' experiences of combining person-centered care with a salutogenic approach at a nursing home for older people. METHODS: Nine nurses, specially trained in salutogenesis and Sense of coherence, were individually interviewed using a semi-structured interview approach. Data was analysed through qualitative content analysis. RESULTS: The nurses experienced that the residential aged care was improved by using salutogenesis and Sense of coherence as a complement to person-centered care. Core aspects of person-centered care were thereby promoted, as the resources of the older persons were emphasized, and aged care became more holistic. In addition to improved residential aged care, the results indicate that this manner of working also contributed to enhanced work satisfaction of the care personnel themselves. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that a salutogenic approach facilitates the implementation of person-centered care by focusing on the older persons' resources and maintaining health. The organization needs to prioritize training staff in salutogenesis and person-centered care, as it supports working toward a common goal and benefits both the older persons and the staff.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Cardio-cerebrovascular disease is the major cause of work-related deaths. Salutogenesis indicates individual differences in health levels occur owing to differences in the sense of coherence (SOC). A salutogenesis-based intervention may promote cardio-cerebrovascular health at work. This study examined the effects of a SOC promotion program based on salutogenesis. DESIGN: Quasi-experimental study. SAMPLE: Fifty-six office workers who were above the "low risk" of cardio-cerebrovascular disease from two workplaces were included in the final analysis. MEASUREMENTS: Data collected pre- and postintervention. To determine the intervention's effectiveness, repeated-measures analysis of variance was used. INTERVENTION: The intervention group was provided with the SOC promotion program, whereas the control group was provided with educational materials alone for 12 weeks. RESULTS: Generalized resistance resources (GRRs; knowledge of cardio-cerebrovascular disease prevention, stress-coping strategies, and social support) and SOC significantly improved in the intervention group. The intervention group showed significant improvements in occupational stress, physical activity, dietary behavior, total cholesterol level, fasting glucose level, hemoglobin A1C level, body mass index, waist circumference, diastolic and systolic blood pressure, and cardio-cerebrovascular risk. CONCLUSIONS: Systematic salutogenesis-based SOC promotion programs should be established to enhance the cardio-cerebrovascular health of office workers at-risk of cardio-cerebrovascular diseases. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Trial Registration Number is KCT0007029. The date of registration is February 23, 2022.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Despite evidence that physical exercises have been helpful in the treatment of various psychiatric disorders, it is unclear whether these data can be generalized to bipolar disorder. The use of physical exercises is challenging and hopeful among patients with bipolar disorders. Few studies have examined the efficacy of physical exercise for patients with bipolar disorders. OBJECTIVE: Investigate the effect of applying physical exercises program on social functioning, alexithymia, and sense of coherence among patients with bipolar disorders. METHODS: This study followed a randomized control trial design "pre and post-test." Patients were randomly allocated to intervention (n = 25) and control groups (Waiting list) (n = 25). The Social Functioning Scale, Toronto Alexithymia Scale, and Sense of Coherence scales were applied in the study. Pre-test and post-tests were administered to investigate the effect of applying the physical exercises program between December 2022 to March 2023. RESULTS: A statistically significant increase in the mean sense of coherence and social functioning scores among the study group. Mean alexithymia scores were significantly decreased among the study group between pre, immediately after, and after a three-month follow-up period. CONCLUSION: Physical exercises are an adjunctive treatment modality that is helpful for patients with bipolar disorders. Nurse educators and service providers should reconsider the physical health care requirements for patients with bipolar disorders to equip them to manage the common comorbidities in people with mental illness.

RESUMO

Until today, most research focussed on the effects of pathogenic workplace demands on employee illness instead of on salutogenic resources on health. Using a stated-choice experiment in a virtual open-plan office, this study identifies key design aspects that enhance psychological and cognitive responses, ultimately improving health outcomes. The study systematically varied six workplace attributes: screens between workstations, occupancy rate, presence of plants, views outside, window-to-wall ratio (WWR), and colour palette. Each attribute predicted perceptions of at least one psychological or cognitive state. Plants had the highest relative importance for all expected responses but views outside with ample daylight, red/warm wall colours, and a low occupancy rate without screens between desks were also important. Low-cost interventions like adding plants, removing screens, and using warm wall colours can contribute to a healthier open-plan office environment. These insights can guide workplace managers to design environments that support employees' mental states and health.Practitioner summary: Salutogenic workplace resources that promote health have been understudied. This study aimed to show which workplace characteristics caused positive psychological and cognitive responses to improve health, using a stated-choice experiment in a virtual office environment. Plants in the office were the most important attribute for employees' psychological and cognitive responses.

RESUMO

AIM: Inte.G.R.O. is a standardized Salutogenic-Psychoeducational intervention designed to help people with severe mental illness manage their life-stress and achieve personal recovery goals through the improvement of social functioning. The aim of this study is to evaluate the long-term outcome of this approach, characterized by health promotion rather than correction of dysfunctional strategies. METHODS: 41 people underwent an observational study with a three time-point evaluation (t0, pre- treatment; t1, 12 months; t2, 36 months). At each time point, social functioning was assessed as primary outcome by the Personal and Social Functioning scale (PSP); furthermore, psychopathological status was assessed by Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS), stress management was measured by means of Stress-Scale and cognitive flexibility variables were assessed by Modified Five-Point Test (M-FPT). RESULTS: Personal and Social Functioning increased at t1 and t2 vs t0; psychopathological status improved at t2 vs t0; stress management improved at t2 vs t1; cognitive flexibility improved at t2 vs t0. CONCLUSIONS: these results substantially confirm after a three-year follow-up the improvements in functioning, psychopathology, stress management and cognitive flexibility seen in previous studies. Furthermore, they show a complex time-dependent fashion. Overall, they confirm a remarkable and long-term impact of Inte.G.R.O. on key Recovery variables. Further studies are needed to address extent and duration of these improvements.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The sense of coherence is developed through the learning process and contributes to the positioning of individuals in the health-disease continuum, facilitating successful and adaptive personal outcomes. Health-related behaviours represent a health determinant of utmost importance for public health and the development of adolescent and youth health promotion policies, as they are related to the main risk factors and problems of morbidity and mortality in our society. Previous studies have analysed the relationship between sense of coherence and only some individual health outcomes such as oral health, the relationship of sense of coherence with smoking and alcohol consumption, concluding that salutogenic factors are related to quality of life and preventive behaviours. The aim of this systematic review was to describe the relationship of sense of coherence with different health-related behaviours investigated so far in the adolescent and youth population. METHODS: A systematic review was carried out in databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus and PsycInfo) and in the bibliographies of the retrieved articles, without limitation of time or language. Associations between sense of coherence and health-related behaviours have been assessed. RESULTS: A total of 1214 investigations were reviewed and 21 of them were included in this systematic review. The relationship between sense of coherence and eight health-related behaviours were identified (alcohol use, physical activity, tobacco use, eating habits, rest periods, use of illegal substances, behaviours related to oral health and time spent in games on the computer). CONCLUSIONS: Our results increase the available evidence and support the solid relationship of the sense of coherence with health behaviours both as a protective factor against risk behaviours and for its positive association with preventive and health promoting behaviours of adolescents, young adults and university students.

RESUMO

Our study examines the core concept of salutogenesis-sense of coherence (SOC)-in relation to off-job crafting (OJC) and mental well-being (MWB). The original salutogenic model of health mainly addresses the protective function of SOC against adversity. In our study, we focus on the recently proposed path of positive health development that captures how SOC can contribute to positive health and thriving. We present and test our theoretical assumptions about one such path, examining OJC as a possible mechanism how SOC translates into MWB. We tested our proposed model using cross-lagged panel model with three waves of panel data from Swiss and German employees (N = 2217). We compared our model to alternative nested models and conducted indirect effect analysis to test longitudinal mediation. Our hypothesized model fitted the data well and we found support for our main hypothesis that OJC partially mediates the relationship between SOC and MWB. Further, we identified positive reciprocal relationships between SOC and MWB, as well as between OJC and MWB. Overall, our study provides evidence that OJC is one mechanism underlying the recently postulated path of positive health development in the salutogenic model. For health promotion, this implies that promoting SOC and OJC may help to strengthen individual well-being and lead to positive feedback loops that foster personal development and thriving.

RESUMO

Meaningfulness is a fundamental aspect in the promotion of frail older adults' health and well-being. From a salutogenic point of view, meaningfulness is a vital component of a sense of coherence (SOC), since having a strong SOC aids toward assembling the resources needed to cope with stressors and manage tensions with success. In order to respond to the challenges of population aging and the need to enable frail older adults to live at home for as long as possible, it is important to explore their meaningfulness in the context of home-based care. A salutogenic framework was used to study meaningfulness. The aim was to explore what promotes meaningfulness among frail older adults. The study uses a hermeneutical approach and has a qualitative design. In total, 17 frail older adults were interviewed. The data were analyzed by content analysis. The results uncovered four themes that the respondents considered important in enhancing meaningfulness in daily life: home care personnel, outdoor activities and green spaces, cultural activities and spirituality. Our study revealed the important role of home care personnel as a resource in promoting meaningfulness in the context of home-based care. Hence, this group should be given sufficient resources, knowledge and competence for enabling meaningfulness and thus a SOC amongst frail older adults.

RESUMO

The article provides a novel look at the links between salutogenesis, health promotion, and urban design supported by the findings of recent research on local high streets and their benefits for the well-being of older people. Salutogenesis and the related explanatory concept of sense of coherence (SOC) have provided a theoretical framework for developing healthy settings interventions, shifting the focus from exploring barriers and deficits to assets and resources in promoting people's health and well-being. While these concepts have informed policies and programmes at the level of regions and cities, no attempt has been made to establish more direct links with the disciplines devoted to the organization and design of the built environment at the scale of public spaces and streets. This article advances the idea that the main categories of SOC-comprehensibility, manageability and meaningfulness-have found application in urban design theory. Linking these categories with urban design concepts in a comprehensive framework, it is possible to guide interventions aimed at strenghtening well-being resources available in the public realm. This is corroborated by the findings resulting from a study of the well-being experiences of older people (n = 84) across a range of local high streets in the city of Edinburgh (UK) applying an innovative multi-methods approach. The discussion establishes the links between well-being benefits, SOC constructs and urban design concepts, and underscores the potential of the proposed framework to guide a design-oriented salutogenic approach to the built environment.

In this article, we propose a novel conceptual framework that links health promotion and the theory of salutogenesis with key concepts commonly used in the urban design. The framework is articulated in relation to the findings of recent research on main neighbourhood commercial streets in Edinburgh (UK)local high streetsand their benefits for the well-being of older people. Salutogenesis theory and related concepts have emphasized the role that everyday environments can have in promoting people's health and well-being, through the opportunities for social interaction and access to material resources they provide. They have informed policies and programmes at city-wide level but not at the scale of streets and public spaces, which is the spatial domain of urban design. The proposed framework establishes the links for a design-oriented salutogenic approach to the built environment and suggests a range of interventions in local high streets that can benefit an ageing population.

RESUMO

AIMS: This research is conducted to determine the effect of salutogenesis-based home care on the sense of coherence in patients with peritoneal dialysis. BACKGROUND: Recent studies on the salutogenesis model have shown that the model is effective in promoting and improving health. It was observed that studies based on the salutogenesis model were carried out in the form of a training programme, and there was no study that shows its effectiveness on patient care by integrating it into the nursing process. DESIGN: The research is conducted as a pre-test-post-test control group experimental study. METHODS: The study included 73 patients, including 36 in the intervention group and 37 in the control group. The research data are collected using the Patient Identifier Information Form, Dialysis Symptom Index (DSI), General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES) and the Sense of Coherence Scale (SIS). The intervention group is provided care based on the salutogenesis model by making home visits 1 time per week for 8 weeks. In this study, the TREND checklist was followed for non-randomised controlled trials. RESULTS: In the study, the pre-test DSI, GSES and SIS (meaningfulness, comprehensibility, manageability sub-dimension) mean scores of the individuals in the intervention and control groups are similar. The third-month and sixth-month intervention group SIS total and sub-dimension scores and GSES scores are found to be statistically significantly higher than the scores of the control group. CONCLUSIONS: As a result of the study, it is determined that the care based on the salutogenesis model provided to peritoneal dialysis patients increases the sense of coherence and self-efficacy and provides symptom control and decreases the dialysis symptoms. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: It has been observed that the salutogenesis model can be used as a step of nursing care in providing symptom control by strengthening the self-efficacy of patients in clinical and home care.

RESUMO

Different models of care in context of chronicity and multimorbidity include community, health system, clinical practice, health policies, prevention, and health promotion. Among these, the role of the health team as a facilitator of self-management is pointed out, being people the protagonists of their process. Multimorbidity approach is mostly carried out from a risk and disease focused point of view, which limits the exploration of resources of people and their environment. Incorporating a positive health approach can contribute to a greater comprehensiveness. The purpose of this article is to propose an approach from the synergy model of health, integrating salutogenesis and health assets model, to help facilitate self-management promoting people's agency capacity. Potential areas of application of these models are presented to work in the context of multimorbidity, promoting health and well-being conditions in people and their families.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Salutogenetic aspects are valuable for consideration in patient-centred care of advanced oncological diseases with a limited life expectancy. The Milestone Communication Approach (MCA), involving physician-nurse tandems, addresses specific challenges and needs over the disease trajectory of patients with stage IV lung cancer and their informal caregivers. This study aims to explore patients' and informal caregivers' salutogenetic experiences with the MCA concept. METHODS: This qualitative study used face-to-face semi-structured interviews with patients and informal caregivers. All generated data were audio-recorded, pseudonymised and transcribed verbatim. Data were structured using Qualitative Content Analysis. The material was coded deductively into themes related to the components of sense of coherence (Aaron Antonovsky) and emerging sub-themes. All data was managed and organised in MAXQDA. RESULTS: In 25 interviews, sense of coherence was referred to with all three components: "Comprehensibility" was supported by information conveyed suitably for the patients; "meaningfulness" was addressed as accepting the situation; and "manageability" led to advance care planning the patients were comfortable with. Patients and informal caregivers experienced the interprofessional tandem as an added value for patient care. CONCLUSIONS: Participants appreciate the MCA in its support for coping with a life-limiting disease. Considering salutogenetic aspects facilitates prognostic awareness and advance care planning. Nevertheless, individual needs of patients and informal caregivers require an individualised application of the MCA.

RESUMO

Objectives: Explore perceptions towards healthy ageing through the perspective of sense of coherence among older adults residing in senior-only households. Methods: A qualitative study using focus group interviews was conducted and appreciative inquiry was adopted as a strengths-based interviewing approach. 27 older adults who either live alone or with their spouses only were involved in six focus group discussions at a community centre in Singapore. Data saturation was achieved and thematic analysis was performed to analyse the data. Results: The four emerging themes were (1) contending evolving vulnerabilities, (2) intrinsic value of health, (3) taking care of oneself is a personal responsibility, and (4) taking one day at a time: outlook towards later part of life. Older adults' underlying pathogenic orientation towards health contributed to their perceived unpredictable confrontations with vicissitudes including illness and death. This played a part to their short outlook towards old age. Consequently, this could limit their will and abilities to seek meaningful pursuits or valued aspirations and movement towards the salutogenic health pole. Conclusion: By reframing the definition of health to pursuing and fulfilling valued accomplishments, optimal health can be achieved regardless of physical health state. This study suggested that sense of coherence towards the pursuit of healthy ageing can be addressed by reducing the unpredictability of ageing-related processes and vulnerabilities (comprehensibility), supporting active adoption of actions which promotes physical, mental and social health (manageability) and individual reflection in making sense of old age to seek motivation in living each day purposefully (meaningfulness).

RESUMO

This article proposes to advance the connections between salutogenic theory and assets models for health improvement. There is a need to integrate their use in public health and health promotion so that their respective potentials can be fully developed. This requires their synergies to be made more explicit so that a more coherent approach can be taken to their utilization. A mechanism is therefore needed that helps to raise awareness of them and their value as a resource together. Bronfenbrenner's bioecological theory provides one framework that can support better integration of salutogenesis with the applied nature of assets-based models. This paper proposes a new 'synergy model for health' that integrates key concepts associated with salutogenic theory-generalized and specific resistance resources (GRRs/SRRs) and generalized and specific resistance deficits and the sense of coherence (SOC). In doing so, it highlights those GRRs and SRRs which are assets that, either individually or collectively, help to develop a stronger SOC. Higher levels of SOC can then support the transformations of potential resources into available assets (that people can understand, manage and make sense of), capable of producing positive health development. The proposed 'Synergy model of health' aims to contribute to a deeper theoretical understanding of health and development through the integration of the key elements of both salutogenesis and assets models. This can facilitate a better contextualization of the ideas into public health policy and practice by making the salutogenic theory more action-oriented and the assets model more theoretical.

RESUMO

Our aim with this article was to explore the experiences of older people who participated in the evidence-based High-Intensity Functional Exercise (HIFE) Program during the first 3 weeks of rehabilitation after hip fracture surgery. Nineteen older people participated in the study. Data were analyzed using systematic text condensation. One overarching theme "Exercise is the key for regaining mobility and a sense of coherence (SOC) in everyday life" emerged from the analysis in addition to these five themes: (a) understanding the existential importance of mobility; (b) maintaining a positive self-image by regaining mobility; (c) regaining one's old life and independence in everyday living; (d) maintaining interpersonal relationships through mobility; and (e) creating positive emotions by being able to move. The findings highlight the importance of exercise as a strategy for regaining mobility, illustrated by the essential role it played in the participants' lives after suffering a hip fracture.

RESUMO

PROBLEM: A pathogenic medical orientation focusing on disease management relies heavily on the skills of healthcare professionals. In contrast, a salutogenic approach focuses on health promotion by encouraging resource strengthening among patients to maintain and support recovery, which could help alleviate healthcare burden and enhance healthcare quality. Considering the increased life expectancies of chronically ill children, this review aimed to consolidate evidence on the use of salutogenesis among children and adolescents with chronic illnesses. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: A scoping review guided by Arksey and O'Malley's five-stage framework was conducted. Studies with samples of children or adolescents aged 19 years and below with chronic disease were included in the review. SAMPLE: A library search was performed across six electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, PsycInfo, and Web of Science) from each database's inception to March 2020. Twelve studies were included. RESULTS: Current evidence only highlighted the trend and advantages of high sense of coherence and identify factors that enhance sense of coherence. Boys, younger age, higher cognitive functioning, non-migrants, non-smokers, and available peer and family support contribute to higher levels of sense of coherence, which lead to better perceived health, quality of life, and more positive coping strategies. CONCLUSIONS: Healthcare professionals should adopt a salutogenic approach to encourage patient involvement, independence, and responsibility in maintaining their own health. IMPLICATIONS: Further research is needed to provide a holistic view of the sense of coherence and application of salutogenesis (especially other salutogenic concepts) among this sample group, which can also inform future salutogenic intervention studies.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this integrative review was to describe salutogenic factors associated with oral health outcomes in older people, from the theoretical perspectives of Antonovsky and Lalonde. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study was based on a primary selection of 10,016 articles. To organize reported salutogenic factors, the Lalonde health field concept and Antonovsky's salutogenic theory were cross tabulated. RESULTS: The final analysis was based on 58 studies. The following oral health outcome variables were reported: remaining teeth, caries, periodontal disease, oral function and oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL). We could identify 77 salutogenic factors for oral health and OHRQoL. Salutogenic factors were identified primarily within the fields of Human Biology (such as 'higher saliva flow', 'BMI < 30 kg/m2' and 'higher cognitive ability at age 11'), Lifestyle (such as 'higher education level', 'social network diversity' and 'optimal oral health behaviour') and Environment (such as 'lower income inequality', 'public water fluoridation' and 'higher neighbourhood education level'). In the age group 60 years and over, there was a lack of studies with specific reference to salutogenic factors. CONCLUSIONS: The results provide an overview of salutogenic factors for oral health from two theoretical perspectives. The method allowed concomitant disclosure of both theoretical perspectives and examination of their congruence. Further hypothesis-driven research is needed to understand how elderly people can best maintain good oral health.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Oral health research in children has focused both on identifying the risk factors for dental caries and on the impact the disease has on children's life. AIM: Identifying studies that used the salutogenic theory to investigate positive aspects to promote a healthy condition in preschool children. DESIGN: A literature scoping review was conducted to answer the question: 'What has been produced in scientific literature about children's oral health with a salutogenic theoretical reference?' The checklist preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses extension for scoping reviews (PRISMA-ScR) was applied. The research was conducted on the databases PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science with no language, design, country or date restrictions. Three independent reviewers selected the studies to be included in the research, extracted data, and assessed the studies' contribution to the review. RESULTS: Among the 38 studies retained, 10 were included, those were published between 2009 and 2018: five in Brazil, two in the United States of America, and one in Canada, China and India, respectively. All articles were published in English language. Nine studies investigated the relation between the parents'/caretakers' sense of coherence and aspects related to the children's oral health condition. One study investigated health factors among the parents of caries-free children. CONCLUSION: Salutogenic orientation must be included in oral health research, so that salutary and risk factors may coexist, contributing to a new perspective for oral health promotion among children.

RESUMO

Mental health professionals have a responsibility to ensure the best possible quality of care. Family is strongly involved in the patient's everyday life. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between health care professionals' perception of the quality of care, attitudes of family involvement and their own sense of coherence. A descriptive quantitative study with fifty-six health professionals, completed "Quality in Psychiatric Care-Community Outpatient Psychiatric Staff", "Families' Importance in Nursing Care-health professionals' attitudes", "The Sense of Coherence Scale-13". The health professionals perceived quality as high and did not perceive the families as a burden.

RESUMO

This study aimed to develop and evaluate the effects of a Salutogenic program on sense of coherence, depression, and suicidal ideation among rural older adults. Quasi-experimental, nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. Participants were female, aged 65 years and older from G and O province, South Korea. The experimental group (n = 22) received a 12-session Salutogenic program for 6 weeks, twice a week. The control group (n = 19) was put on a waiting list to receive the intervention after completing the study. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, a χ2 test, independent t-test, and repeated measure ANOVA with SPSS WIN 26.0. There were significant differences in sense of coherence (F = 19.34, p < .001), depression (F = 12.93, p < .001), and suicidal ideation (F = 4.40, p = .027) over time pretest, posttest, and follow-up test after intervention between two groups. The study discussed the effect of Salutogenic program on sense of coherence, depression, and suicidal ideation, and considered its benefits in suicide prevention for elderly women. The Salutogenic program can be recommended as useful strategies to enhance sense of coherence and to reduce depression and suicidal ideation of elderly women in community.
