RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Understanding nursing students' perceptions of dishonesty and their attitudes towards medical errors is crucial for nurse educators. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the relationship between nursing students' perceptions of dishonesty and their attitudes towards medical errors. DESIGN: This study is descriptive and correlational research. The sample size consisted of 230 nursing students in a Department of Nursing at Kirsehir Ahi Evran University Faculty of Health Sciences in Turkey during the 2022-2023 academic year. The data was collected between May 15-31, 2023. RESULTS: A statistically significant correlation was observed between the total score of the Nursing Student Perceptions of Dishonesty Scale, and the Medical Errors Attitude Scale (p < 0.05). There was a positive and weak correlation between the MEAS scale score and the cheating (r = 0.284, p < 0.05), sabotage (r = 0.275, p < 0.05), perjury (r = 0.308, p < 0.05), non-compliance (r = 0.309, p < 0.05), and stealing (r = 0.359, p < 0.05) sub dimension score, and a positive and very weak correlation between the MEAS score and the sub dimension of not my problem score (r = 0.182, p < 0.05). The perceptions of dishonesty explain 15 % of the attitude towards medical errors (F = 4.563, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: In this study, a significant relationship was observed between nursing students' perceptions of dishonesty and their attitudes towards medical errors. Specifically, as the perception of dishonesty increased, there was a positive change in attitudes towards medical errors. These results offer nurse educators valuable insights into the impact of academic dishonesty on the development of medical error attitudes among student nurses throughout their nursing education and beyond.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The global nursing shortage is complex and multifaceted. Despite the policy of increasing the number of nurses, concerns about the sustainability of the nursing workforce in Turkey continue. AIM: To evaluate the relationship between unemployment anxiety, job satisfaction, and migration attitudes among Turkish nursing candidates. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 1100 nursing candidates between April and June 2022. The data gathered from the "Personal Form, Job Satisfaction, and Brain Drain Attitudes Scale" were analyzed using logistic regression and decision tree analysis. RESULTS: Of the participants, 67.1% were female, and the mean age was 22.6 ±â€¯1.7 years. Being male (OR = 1.317, 95% Cl 0.994-1.743) having a low income (OR = 1.754, 95% Cl 1.334-2.306), feeling insecure about the future (OR = 2.340, 95% Cl 1.312-4.175), expecting a lower wage than desired (OR = 2.015, 95% Cl 1.132-3.586), and employment precariousness (OR = 1.786, 95% Cl 1.355-2.353) increase the possibility of experiencing high unemployment anxiety. On the other hand, family support for living abroad (OR = 0.579, 95% CI 0.408-0.821) and job satisfaction (OR = 0.799, 95% CI 0.692-0.921) decrease unemployment anxiety (p < 0.05). According to the results of the decision tree analysis, the host country's pull factors are the best predictors of the nursing candidates' intention to work abroad as nurses (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The increasing prevalence of unemployment anxiety and migration tendencies among nursing candidates requires the evaluation of policies aimed at increasing the number of nursing graduates in Turkey.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Palliative care is a comprehensive service that includes not only the patient but also the caregivers. AIMS: This research was carried out to determine the relationship and factors affecting the burden and anger level of informal caregivers of patients. METHODS: This descriptive study was conducted with caregivers (n=206) of patients hospitalised in two Palliative Care Centers in Ordu, Türkiye. FINDINGS: In the research, it was determined that there was a statistically significant relationship between the burden of caregivers and the trait anger level, anger-in, anger-out sub-dimension scores of The Trait Anger and Anger Expression Scale, but a negative relationship was found between the burden of caregivers and anger control sub-dimension scores of The Trait Anger and Anger Expression Scale. CONCLUSIONS: The burden of a caregiving process has a positive impact on the trait anger level, anger-in, anger-out but has a negative impact on anger control. Nurses should monitor a caregiver's level of anger and burden and develop programmes required to decrease the caregiver's anger level and burden.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To develop and evaluate a theoretical model to explain the relationships between eHealth literacy and perception of health, and perception of pregnancy risk in pregnant women. METHOD: This cross-sectional study was carried out with 238 pregnant women in one of the hospitals in Turkey between March 15, 2021 and May 15, 2021. Data were collected using an Information Form, eHealth Literacy Scale, Perception of Health Scale, and Perception of Pregnancy Risk Questionnaire. RESULTS: The mean scores of the pregnant women participating in the study on eHealth literacy and perception of health were 30.45 ± 6.56 and 51.42 ± 6.91, respectively and their mean score on perception of pregnancy risk was 42.6 ± 29.38. The direct effect of the eHealth Literacy Scale on the "Risk for Baby" subscale of the Perception of Pregnancy Risk Questionnaire was insignificant whereas the scale's effect became significant with the Perception of Health Scale (ß = -0.006; 0.057). CONCLUSION: To reduce the perception of risk in pregnant women, it is important to improve not only their eHealth literacy but also their knowledge and attitudes about being healthy.

RESUMEN

This study investigates smartphone addiction among nursing students, the levels of perceived pain in the upper extremity, and the relationship between them. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 259 nursing students in a Turkish state university, who agreed to participate in the research. Study data were collected online using the introductory questionnaire, smartphone addiction scale-short version (SAS-SV), and numeric rating scale (NRS). The data were evaluated by descriptive statistics and simple linear regression analysis. The SAS-SV score of students included in the study was 25.71 ± 7.49. It was determined that all of the students experienced burning in the ears, pinkie, elbow, shoulder, wrist, eye, hand and neck pain due to telephone use. In the study, it was determined that the SAS-SV scores of the students were found to be higher 7.4 times in those with the highest level of headache; 6.8 times in those with the highest level of ear pain; 8.4 times in those with the highest level of shoulder pain; 8.2 times in those with the highest level of low back pain. The study established that students were experiencing a low level of smartphone addiction; however, various health and social problems associated with phone use and smartphone addiction caused pain in certain extremities.

RESUMEN

Studying the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the current nursing workforce and the training of future nurses is important. This study aimed to assess the views of senior nursing students pursuing health policy courses on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the political power and awareness of nursing profession. Document analysis method, one of the qualitative enhancement patterns, was employed in this study. This study was conducted in a nursing school with a sample comprising 34 nursing students. The data were collected from online homework documents and evaluated with thematic analysis. Students on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the nursing profession were categorized into three main themes and nine subthemes. Students reported that although the visibility of nursing increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, the problems of this profession did not change. The results showed that depoliticization was an important obstacle in the fight against these problems and students stated that the struggle could be realized together with a unified and strong political voice. Students suggested being organized in the struggle against problems, addressing unions and associations, and political awareness and political participation as a remedy.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the incidence of food insecurity and affecting factors in households with children in Turkey during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study. The participants were recruited by the snowball sampling method, and the data were collected by means of a link sent to their smartphones through their social media accounts. This study included 211 households with at least 1 child. RESULTS: The study revealed that 21.8% households had food insecurity that was not at the hunger threshold. The monthly income of 80.6% of the households was below the poverty line and monthly income decreased in more than half of the households during the pandemic. Food insecurity increased 2.5 times when the households comprised workers or self-employed individuals (odds ratio [OR] = 2.529; P = 0.002), increased 3 times when the monthly income of the households decreased (OR = 3.131; P = 0.000), and increased 2 times when total monthly income of the household fell below poverty line during the pandemic (OR = 2.001; P = 0.049). CONCLUSIONS: It is determined that nearly half the households have food insecurity and that the pandemic poses a risk in terms of food security. We recommend that public health studies should be planned to ensure accessibility to healthy foods.

RESUMEN

AIM: This study aims to determine the relationship between smartphone use among intern nursing students, fear of missing out and their care-related behaviour. BACKGROUND: Today, smartphone use is common and fear of missing out is a prominent issue in our society; this behaviour and issue are linked and may lead to adverse consequences. DESIGN: The study is conducted as a cross-sectional design. METHODS: The target population in this research consists of senior nursing students (n = 101). There was no sampling selection and the study was completed with 97 students who agreed to participate in the research. Data were collected with introductory questionnaire forms, the Smartphone Addiction Scale (SAS), the Fear of Missing Out Scale (FoMOs) and the Caring Assessment Questionnaire (Care-Q). The valid and reliable SAS, FoMOs and Care-Q were transformed into online forms and the link was distributed to the participants via online Google forms. RESULTS: Based on the results of the study, the mean scores were 83.30 ±â€¯2.21 of SAS, 21.56 ±â€¯6.42 for FOMOs and 5.54 ±â€¯0.87 for Care-Q scale. There were statistically significant differences between gender and Care-Q score and between the duration of smartphone use, daily smartphone usage time and SAS score (p < 0.05). There was a weak positive relationship between SAS and FoMOs scale scores, along with a weak negative relationship between the accessibility and comfort sub-dimensions of the SAS and Care-Q scale. Also, the SAS score explains 0.4% of the comfort subscale of the Care-Q scale (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Further research focusing on nursing students is recommended to identify potential adverse effects created by the use of smartphones and the fear of missing out. In addition, educators are recommended to develop guidelines and prepare new policies for smartphone use to minimise the potential negative effects of smartphone use and fear of missing out on student care behaviour.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to develop and evaluate a theoretical model to explain the relationships among participation in individual and social activities, compliance with prevention guidelines, and the perception of fatalism and fear of COVID-19. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey of 1,067 participants who were >18 years of age living in different provinces of Turkey recruited between August 15, 2020 and October 15, 2020. We used covariant structural analysis to assess the relationships of the constructs of the theoretical model. RESULTS: Significant fits were detected for Model 1 (χ2  = 924,389, p < .001, comparative fit index or CFI = 0.944), and for Model 2 (χ2  = 2,253,751, p < .001, CFI = 0.926). The predetermination and luck subdimensions reduce the fear of COVID-19, while the pessimism subdimension and compliance with preventive measures increase the fear. CONCLUSION: In public health crises such as COVID-19, it is important to plan scientific knowledge-based public education; take initiatives in accordance with the cultural, social, economic, religious, and local characteristics of the societies; and conduct public health studies covering the whole society.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to develop a protective and improving protocol for foot health of the older people and to assess the effect of this protocol on foot problems, foot care knowledge levels and foot care behavior. METHODS: This randomized controlled trial that was conducted in a nursing home in Turkey. The research was completed with 57 older people (28 intervention group, 29 control group) over the age of 60 living in a nursing home who met the eligibility criteria. Data were collected using the Older Person Identification Form, Foot Examination Form, Foot Care Knowledge Level Form, and Foot Care Behavior Scale at baseline and 6 months later. When assessing the study data; Descriptive statistics, Student t-test, Mann Whitney U test, Wilcoxon signed ranks test, chi-square test, continuity (Yates) correction, Fisher exact chi-square test, McNemar test and GEE were used. RESULTS: At the end of the research, there were statistically significant improvements in problems related to dermatology (appearance, hygiene, and moisture); problems related to circulation (temperature); problems related to sensory issues (feeling and pain); problems related to footwear; and problems related to self-care between the intervention and control groups. Also, there were statistically significant improvements in problems related to dermatology (appearance and hygiene); problems related to circulation (temperature, color, and edema); and problems related to sensory issues (feeling and pain) for the posttest compared to the pretest in the intervention group (p < 0.05). In terms of foot care knowledge level and foot care behavior scale mean scores, statistically significant differences were found between the groups and for the intervention group pretest and posttest mean scores. CONCLUSION: The foot care protocol applied to older people was identified to reduce foot problems by a significant level, and increase mean points for knowledge levels about foot care and the foot care behavior scale.

RESUMEN

AIMS: To determine the main driving factors affecting the senior nursing students in their decision to migrate and to evaluate the effect of attitude towards migration in career planning. BACKGROUND: In order to promote the nursing workforce, it is important to understand the factors affecting the decisions to migrate. METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 1,410 Turkish nursing students. The data, which were collected using the Descriptive Form and Attitude Scale for Brain Drain (BD-s), were analysed with the multiple regression and decision tree analysis. RESULTS: The mean score of attitudes towards migration was 56.30 ± 12.09 (min 16- max 80). The main push-pull drivers to migrate were the socio-political factors and working conditions. The BD-s score was higher in the participants, who had overseas experience, had career plans and studied in a metropolitan city. The strongest variable predicting career planning was the attitude towards migration. CONCLUSION: The opinions of the students on career planning and their intentions to migrate indicated that the shortage of nurses would continue in Turkey in the future. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT: The prospects of the nursing candidates regarding the nursing profession should be addressed considering their expectations for initial salaries, career development and salary increases.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Nurses are in a key position for reproduction health service delivery. Therefore, it is thought that it would be important to inspect opinions of student nurses, who will be health employees in the future, about self-induced abortion to develop women health and public health. OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study is to inspect opinions of nursing students with different sociocultural specialties, about self-induced abortions. RESEARCH DESIGN: It is qualitative type and planned with ethnographic research pattern. PARTICIPANTS AND RESEARCH CONTEXT: The study was conducted with 20 last-term students of Kirsehir Ahi Evran University, Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nursing, who were chosen by maximum diversity sampling technique. Interviews were made with semi-structured interview form and voice records during the study; data were analyzed with content analyzing method. ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS: Permission from the organization, university ethics committee, and personal approvals were taken from participants to conduct the research. FINDINGS: Based on the analysis, two major themes on self-induced abortion in Turkish nursing students were found: dilemma of traditional perspective and professional identity and occupational awareness. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: It is seen that there is a dilemma between traditional point of view and professional identities about self-induced abortion for nursing students, but they had occupational awareness. It should be recommended to give information about national and international licit legislations for reproductive health, self-induced abortion, and setting up ethical discussion environments for nursing students.
