RESUMEN

(57)Fe nuclear forward scattering on the chiral magnet FeGe reveals an extremely large precursor phase region above the helimagnetic ordering temperature T(C)(p) and beyond the pressure-induced quantum phase transition at 19 GPa. The decrease of the magnetic hyperfine field ⟨B(hf)⟩ with pressure is accompanied by a large increase of the width of the distribution of ⟨B(hf)⟩, indicating a strong quasistatic inhomogeneity of the magnetic states in the precursor region. Hyperfine fields of the order of 4 T (equivalent to a magnetic moment µ(Fe)≈0.4µ(B)) persist up to 28.5 GPa. No signatures of magnetic order have been found at about 31 GPa. The results, supported by ab initio calculations, suggest that chiral magnetic precursor phenomena, such as an inhomogeneous chiral-spin state, are vastly enlarged due to increasing spin fluctuations as FeGe is tuned to its quantum phase transition.

RESUMEN

We discovered that under pressure SnO with α-PbO structure, the same structure as in many Fe-based superconductors, e.g., ß-FeSe, undergoes a transition to a superconducting state for p≳6 GPa with a maximum Tc of 1.4 K at p=9.3 GPa. The pressure dependence of Tc reveals a domelike shape and superconductivity disappears for p≳16 GPa. It is further shown from band structure calculations that SnO under pressure exhibits a Fermi surface topology similar to that reported for some Fe-based superconductors and that the nesting between the hole and electron pockets correlates with the change of Tc as a function of pressure.

RESUMEN

We report x-ray diffraction and magnetization measurements under pressure combined with ab initio calculations to show that high-pressure TiOCl corresponds to an enhanced Ti3+-Ti3+ dimerized phase existing already at room temperature. Our results demonstrate the formation of a metal-metal bond between Ti3+ ions along the b axis of TiOCl, accompanied by a strong reduction of the electronic gap. The evolution of the dimerization with pressure suggests a crossover from the spin-Peierls to a conventional Peierls situation at high pressures.

RESUMEN

High-pressure 149Sm nuclear forward scattering of synchrotron radiation and specific heat measurements have been performed on the intermediate valent Kondo insulator SmB6. The results show that at a critical pressure p(c) approximately = 6 GPa, where the charge gap closes, a first order transition occurs to a magnetically ordered state, which shows typical features of trivalent samarium compounds. The similarity with SmS stresses the role of local correlations and gives important insight into the debate on the local or itinerant character of the f electrons in heavy fermion systems.

RESUMEN

Electronic conduction in GaM4Se8 (M=Nb,Ta) compounds with the fcc GaMo4S8-type structure originates from hopping of localized unpaired electrons (S=1 / 2) among widely separated tetrahedral M4 metal clusters. We show that under pressure these systems transform from Mott insulators to a metallic and superconducting state with T(C)=2.9 and 5.8 K at 13 and 11.5 GPa for GaNb4Se8 and GaTa4Se8, respectively. The occurrence of superconductivity is shown to be connected with a pressure-induced decrease of the MSe6 octahedral distortion and simultaneous softening of the phonon associated with M-Se bonds.

RESUMEN

High pressure 149Sm nuclear forward scattering experiments have been performed on the nonmagnetic semiconductor SmS. We present the first clear evidence that the closure of the insulating gap at p(Delta) approximately 2 GPa coincides with the appearance of magnetic order. The pressure-induced magnetic phase transition has some first order character and suggests that the Sm ions are nearly trivalent at p(Delta). A Gamma(8) quartet crystal field ground state with a value of approximately 0.5 micro(B) for the samarium magnetic moment is inferred from our results. Considerable magnetic short range order is observed above the ordering temperature inferred from macroscopic measurements.
