RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Performing CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) is an extremely intricate skill whose success depends largely on the level of knowledge and skill of Anesthesiology students. Therefore, this research was conducted to compare the effect of the scenario-based training method as opposed to video training method on nurse anesthesia students' BLS (Basic Life Support) knowledge and skills. METHODS: This randomized quasi-experimental study involved 45 nurse anesthesia students of Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences, Ahvaz, Iran in 2022-2023. The practical room of the university formed the research environment. The participants were randomly divided into three groups of scenario-based training, video training, and control. Data were collected by a knowledge questionnaire and a BLS skill assessment checklist before and after the intervention. RESULTS: There was a significant difference between the students' scores of BLS knowledge and skill before and after the educational intervention in both SG (scenario group) (p < 0.001) and VG (video group) (p = 0.008) (p < 0.001). However, no significant difference was observed in this regard in the CG (control group) (p = 0.37) (p = 0.16). Also, the mean scores of BLS knowledge and skills in the SG were higher than those in the VG (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Given the beneficial impact of scenario-based education on fostering active participation, critical thinking, utilization of intellectual abilities, and learner creativity, it appears that this approach holds an advantage over video training, particularly when it comes to teaching crucial subjects like Basic Life Support.

Introduction: Learning professional ethics can enhance the effectiveness of medical graduates as future health care providers. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the effectiveness of professional ethics education based on a multi-method approach in organizational commitment and job involvement of senior nurse anesthesia students of Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences (AJUMS), Ahvaz, Iran, in 2022. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test post-test design including 64 senior nurse anesthesia students of AJUMS who were selected using census method and randomly divided )using simple random method( into two groups of intervention and control (n = 32 each). For the intervention group, two 5-hour training workshops were held in 2 consecutive weeks using different training methods offered in an integrated manner, while participants in the control group received no education. Finally, the data were collected and analyzed using SPSS version 16, based on Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, paired and independent t-tests, chi-square test, and analysis of covariance. Results: Professional ethics education based on a multi-method approach had a positive effect on the organizational commitment and job involvement of senior nurse anesthesia students. There was a significant difference between the two groups in terms of their job involvement (P=0.005 and F=1.65) and organizational commitment scores (P=0.025 and F=35.56). These findings suggest that professional ethics education based on a multi-method approach can improve job involvement and organizational commitment and its dimensions (normative, continuance, and affective). Conclusion: Teaching professional ethics by explaining the moral virtues of work, business affairs, and code of professional conduct promotes job involvement and organizational commitment of senior nurse anesthesia students.

BACKGROUND: Structured Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation (SBAR) training technique have been widely utilized in clinical and educational settings. Therefore, the current study investigated the effectiveness of an SBAR-based educational program in students' self-efficacy and clinical decision-making skills. METHODS: This quasi-experimental study was conducted using a pretest and posttest design and a control group at Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences, Ahvaz, Iran. A total of 70 three- and fourth-year students were recruited for the study using the census method. The students were randomly assigned to the intervention and control groups. The intervention group participated in an SBAR-based educational course consisting of eight sessions held in 4 weeks. Differences in the levels of self-efficacy and clinical decision-making skills before and after participation in the SBAR course were assessed and compared. Data were analyzed using descriptive tests, the Mann-Whiney U test, paired and independent t-tests, and the Wilcoxon test. RESULTS: The intervention group demonstrated significantly higher levels of self-efficacy with a mean score of 140.66 ± 22.43 (P < 0.001) and clinical decision-making with a mean score of 75.31 ± 7.72 (P < 0.001); while in the control group, the mean score of self-efficacy and clinical decision-making skills was 85.34 ± 18.15 and 65.51 ± 4.49, respectively. Moreover, the Mann-Whitney U test showed that the levels of students' clinical decision-making skills were promoted to the next level after the intervention (P < 0.001); it means the distribution of the level of intuitive-interpretive skill was upgraded from 0 to 22.9%. CONCLUSION: The SBAR-based training programs can promote the self-efficacy and clinical decision-making skills of anesthesiology nursing students. Considering the weakness of the anesthesiology nursing curriculum at the undergraduate level in Iran, it can be expected that the SBAR-based training course should be included as an educational intervention in the curriculum of anesthesiology nursing students.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), as one of the complications after laparoscopic cholecystectomy, occurs in over 40% - 77% of cases. Considering the numerous complications of synthetic drugs, there is a growing tendency towards the use of herbal medicines due to their unique features. Ginger root is one of the herbal compounds effective on nausea and vomiting. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of preoperative Zintoma capsules on PONV after laparoscopic cholecystectomy. METHODS: In this quasi-experimental study, 130 eligible patients were randomly assigned to intervention (n = 65) and control (n = 65) groups using the four-block method. The intervention group received two capsules of 500 mg and one of 250 mg Zintoma. The control group received three placebo capsules. The severity of patients' PONV was recorded at 0, 2, 6, 12, and 24 hours after surgery using a checklist and a standard VAS instrument. Data were analyzed using t-test, Chi-square test, and LSD Post Hoc test (ANOVA) in SPSS 19. RESULTS: The severity of PONV and vomiting was significantly different between the two groups (P = 0.001) at the above time points. The mean severity of nausea (by VAS) changed in the intervention group from 7.92 ± 1.28 to 0.33 ± 0.67 and in the control group from 8.00 ± 1.20 to 2.11 ± 1.55. The postoperative vomiting was less frequent in the group receiving the Zintoma capsules. The postoperative use of chemical anti-vomiting and nausea drugs was significantly lower in the intervention group than in the placebo group (P = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Zintoma capsules can be used as a supportive treatment in the prevention of nausea and vomiting by reducing the incidence rate of PONV.

BACKGROUND: Gynaecological laparoscopy one ofthe most common operations thatis accompanied by postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). A non-pharmacological method of preventing PONV is acupuncture therapy. OBJECTIVES: This study is conducted to compare the effects of acupuncture and metoclopramide on post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV) after gynaecological laparoscopy. METHODS: In this double-blind, randomized, clinical trial study,122female, ASA I, aged 19 - 46, who had been referred to the Imam Khomini Hospital (Ahvaz, Iran) and were candidates for gynaecological laparoscopy were enrolled. Eligible patients were randomly allocated into three groups group I (acupuncture; n = 40), group II (metoclopramide 0.2 mg/kg IV; n = 41), and group III (control; n = 41). In group I, acupuncture was done by inserting a special needle at point P6 in front of the elbow immediately after induction of anaesthesia and removing it before extubation and transfer of the patient to the recovery room. The occurrences of nausea and vomiting during the period of stay in the recovery room (one and two hours after surgery) were recorded through questions or clinical observation. Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS V. 19, descriptive statistics, and the Chi-square test. RESULTS: The acupuncture group (11.1%) showed a significant decrease in the incidence of nausea one hour after surgery compared to the metoclopramide group (33.3%) (P = 0.02), but there was no significant difference between the acupuncture and metoclopramide groups in terms of postoperative vomiting (POV) incidence one and two hours after surgery. Incidence of PONV in the acupuncture group (2.7%) was statistically significantly lower than that in the control group (28.5%), two hours after surgery (P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Acupuncture is better for controlling nausea after laparoscopic surgery, compared to metoclopramide. Acupuncture is an effective method for reduction of PONV in gynaecological laparoscopy.
