BACKGROUND: This research investigated the impact of selenium-nanoparticles (Se-NPs) supplemented in sunflower meal (SM)-based diets on digestibility, mineral absorption, and growth performance of Catla catla. Se-NPs were added to seven test meals in varying amounts (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5 and 3 mgkg- 1). A total of 315 fish were evenly allocated three replicate tanks, with 15 fish per tank, and given diets equivalent to (5%) of their wet biomass daily for a period of 90 days. RESULTS: The test diet (T-D) supplemented with 1.5 mgkg- 1 Se-NPs yielded remarkable results, including a significant increase in mean weight gain (14 g), an impressive average weight gain percentage (208%), a 100% survival rate, with no mortality observed and the highest specific growth rate (1.25). Moreover, 1.5 mgkg- 1 Se-NPs (T-D-IV) demonstrated superior nutritional digestibility (CP, 76%; CF, 79% and GE, 74%). Additionally, the diet 1.5 mgkg- 1 Se-NPs showed enhanced mineral absorption (K, P, Ca, Na, Zn, Cu and Fe) than other diets. CONCLUSION: It was practically proven that the growth indices, nutrient absorption, and mineral status of C. catla were significantly improved by Se-NPs supplemented SM-based diets, with the optimum level of supplementation being 1.5 mgkg- 1.

The efficacy of herbal supplements in mitigating heavy metals (HMs) toxicity was investigated using a widely grown fish, the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). The experiment was conducted over two phases: during the stress phase, the experimental fishes were exposed to sub-lethal concentrations of HMs, including lead, cadmium, zinc, and copper for 15 days; following which during the feeding phase, herbal supplements were given for 70 days to ameliorate their effects. Seven groups were established: the control negative group (CON-ve), control positive group (CON+ve, without any treatment), and five groups with supplementation of 1% turmeric (TUR), cinnamon (CIN), ginger (GIN), garlic (GAR), and their mixture (MIX), respectively. A total of 315 fishes were distributed evenly in experimental tanks (15 fishes per tank, in triplicates). The results revealed that exposure to HMs led to significant (p < 0.05) alterations in all the tested parameters, i.e., liver damage and growth reduction. The herbal supplements, especially the MIX groups, ameliorated the harmful effects of HMs and restored fish growth, digestibility, carcass composition, and liver health. In conclusion, the study demonstrated that the herbal supplements were effective in reducing the HMs-linked toxicity in Nile tilapia. Future studies pertaining to the mechanisms facilitated by the various herbal bioactive substances-linked tolerance to HMs in fishes are warranted.

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic heavy metal that poses risks to crop production and food safety worldwide. This study evaluated whether manganese (Mn) addition could mitigate Cd toxicity and reduce Cd accumulation in barley seedlings. Hydroponically grown seedlings of Cd-tolerant (WSBZ) and Cd-sensitive (Dong17) barley cultivars were treated with 0.1 µM and 1 µM Cd as well as 0.2 mM Mn alone and in a combination with 0.1 or 1.0 µM Cd for 21 days. Cd exposure caused the dramatic alteration of growth and physiological parameters by disrupting chloroplast, and increased Cd accumulation in both genotypes. However, Mn addition markedly alleviated the negative impacts of all examined parameters caused by Cd stress. Cd addition enhanced expression of anti-oxidative enzyme related genes, including HvSOD, HvCAT, HvAPX, HvPOD in the two barley genotypes exposed to Cd stress. The expression analysis showed nearly all HvNRAMPs genes are dramatically up regulated by both Mn and Cd, with WSBZ having higher expression than Dong 17. Notably, HvNRAMP1 showed the highest expression due to Mn addition, highlighting its crucial role in Mn uptake and transportation in barley. Moreover, Cd stress and Mn addition increased and suppressed the expression of HvYSL5, HvHMA2 and HvHMA3, respectively. Conversely, the expression of HvYSL2, HvIRT1 and HvMTP8 was upregulated by both Mn and Cd treatments, with a further increase observed in the combined Cd and Mn treatments. It may be concluded that sufficient Mn supply is quite important for reducing Cd uptake and accumulation in plants.

Background: Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TTC) has a preponderance for females, particularly postmenopausal. However, recent data from multicenter registries identified a worse prognosis in male patients, particularly with cardiogenic shock. We aim to investigate gender disparities in outcomes of TTC-associated cardiogenic shock (TTC-CS). Methods: The National Readmission Database (2016-2020) was utilized to identify TTC-CS hospitalizations. Cohorts were stratified by gender. A Propensity Score Matching (PSM) model, which utilized complete Mahalanobis Distance Matching within the Propensity Score Caliper following multivariate regression, successfully matched males and females. Pearson's χ2 test was applied to the propensity-matched cohorts to compare outcomes. Results: Among 12,803 TTC-CS hospitalizations, the majority (74.1 %) were females (N: 9490), and 25.9 % were males (N: 3313). On propensity-matched cohorts (2609), males were found to have higher in-hospital mortality (31 % vs. 26 %, p < 0.001), higher incidence of sudden cardiac arrest (14 % vs. 10.8 %, p < 0.001), endotracheal intubation (52.1 % vs. 48.8 %, p: 0.001), acute liver injury (18 % vs. 15.9 %, p: 0.004), acute stroke (7.2 % vs. 5.8 %, p: 0.004), cardiac arrhythmias (55.1 % vs. 49.3 %, p < 0.001) and acute kidney injury (63.1 % vs. 49 %, p < 0.001); while female patients were found to have higher utilization of mechanical circulatory support (MCS) modalities (16.1 % vs 13.2 %, p < 0.001).Males had a higher adjusted cost of hospitalization ($54,537 vs. $42,805, p < 0.001) with a higher median length of hospital stay (10 vs. 9 days, p < 0.001). The two groups had no significant difference in 30, 90, and 180-day readmission rates (p > 0.05). From 2016 to 2020; mortality has not changed significantly for TTC-CS, while the use of percutaneous coronary angiogram (PCA) and MCS has down-trended (p-trend < 0.05). Conclusion: For TTC-CS hospitalization, males have higher in-hospital mortality and complication rates, along with higher LOS and cost of hospitalization. Despite advances in the management of CS, there was no significant difference in mortality from 2016 to 2020.

BACKGROUND: Infant mortality continues to be a significant problem for patients with congenital heart disease (CHD). Limited data exist on the recent trends of mortality in infants with CHD. METHODS: The CDC WONDER (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research) was queried to identify deaths occurring within the United States with CHD listed as one of the causes of death between 1999 and 2020. Subsequently, trends were calculated using the Joinpoint regression program (version 4.9.1.0; National Cancer Institute). RESULTS: A total of 47,015 deaths occurred in infants due to CHD at the national level from the year 1999 to 2020. The overall proportional infant mortality (compared to all deaths) declined (47.3% to 37.1%, average annual percent change [AAPC]: -1.1 [95% CI -1.6 to -0.6, p < 0.001]). There was a significant decline in proportional mortality in both Black (45.3% to 34.3%, AAPC: -0.5 [-0.8 to -0.2, p = 0.002]) and White patients (55.6% to 48.6%, AAPC: -1.2 [-1.7 to -0.7, p = 0.001]), with a steeper decline among White than Black patients. A statistically significant decline in the proportional infant mortality in both non-Hispanic (43.3% to 33.0%, AAPC: -1.3% [95% CI -1.9 to -0.7, p < 0.001]) and Hispanic (67.6% to 57.7%, AAPC: -0.7 [95% CI -0.9 to -0.4, p < 0.001]) patients was observed, with a steeper decline among non-Hispanic infant population. The proportional infant mortality decreased in males (47.5% to 53.1%, AAPC: -1.4% [-1.9 to -0.9, p < 0.001]) and females (47.1% to 39.6%, AAPC: -0.9 [-1.9 to 0.0, p = 0.05]). A steady decline in for both females and males was noted. CONCLUSION: Our study showed a significant decrease in CHD-related mortality rate in infants and age-adjusted mortality rate (AAMR) between 1999 and 2020. However, sex-based, racial/ethnic disparities were noted, with female, Black, and Hispanic patients showing a lesser decline than male, White, and non-Hispanic patients.

Cadmium (Cd) is a well-known pollutant in agricultural soil, affecting human health through the food chain. To combat this issue, Ca + Mg (25 mg L-1) nanocomposite and Bacillus pumilus, either alone or combined, were applied to rice plants under Cd (5 mg kg-1, 10 mg kg-1) contamination. In our study, growth and yield traits demonstrated the beneficial influence of Ca + Mg and B. pumilus application in improving rice defense mechanism by reducing Cd stress. Combined Ca + Mg and B. pumilus application increased SPAD (15), total chlorophyll (18), chlorophyll a (11), chlorophyll b (22), and carotenoids (21%) with Cd (10 mg kg-1), compared to the application alone. Combined Ca + Mg and B. pumilus application significantly regulated MDA (15), H2O2 (13), EL (10), and O2 •- (24%) in shoots under Cd (10 mg kg-1), compared to the application alone. Cd (10 mg kg-1) increased the POD (22), SOD (21), APX (12), and CAT (13%) in shoots with combined Ca + Mg and B. pumilus application, compared to the application alone. Combined Ca + Mg and B. pumilus application significantly reduced Cd accumulation in roots (22), shoots (13), and grains (20%) under Cd (10 mg kg-1), compared to the application alone. Consequently, the combined application of Ca + Mg and B. pumilus is a sustainable solution to enhance crop production under Cd stress.

Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) continues to grow in the United States. There are limited data on recipients of solid organ transplant (SOT) and patients with liver cirrhosis who undergo aortic valve replacement (AVR). Our study aims to evaluate outcomes in these populations. Using the national readmission database (2016 to 2020), we identified recipients of SOT and patients with liver cirrhosis without previous liver transplants who were admitted for severe aortic stenosis and underwent either TAVR or surgical AVR (SAVR). We used multivariable regression for adjusted analysis and the propensity score matching model, implementing complete Mahalanobis distance matching within the Propensity Score Caliper (0.2) to match TAVR and SAVR cohorts for outcomes. Of 3,394 hospitalizations for AVR in recipients of SOT, 2,181 underwent TAVR, and 1,213 underwent SAVR. On propensity-matched analysis, SAVR was associated with more adverse events than was TAVR, including in-hospital mortality (5.2% vs 1.1%, adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 4.49, p <0.001), acute kidney injury (43.7% vs 10.2%, p <0.001), cardiogenic shock (9.0% vs 1.6%, p <0.001), sudden cardiac arrest (15.9 vs 6.0%, p <0.001), major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (28% vs 10.4%, p <0.001), and net adverse events (72.8 vs 37.6%, p <0.001). A greater median length of stay (10 vs 2 days, p <0.001) and adjusted cost ($80,842 vs $57,014, p <0.001) were also observed. The readmission rates were the same for both cohorts after a 6-month follow-up. Similarly, in 14,763 hospitalizations for AVR in liver cirrhosis, 7,109 patients underwent TAVR, and 7,654 underwent SAVR. In propensity-matched cohorts (n = 2,341), SAVR was found to be associated with greater adverse events, including in-hospital mortality (19.8% vs 10%), stroke (6.7% vs 2%), acute kidney injury (67.7% vs 30.3%), cardiogenic shock (41.9% vs 19.9%), sudden cardiac arrest (31.8% vs 13.2%, aOR 2.89), major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (66.2% vs 35.7%), and net adverse events (86% vs 59.5%) (p <0.001). A greater median length of stay (16 vs 3 days) and cost ($500,218 vs $263,383) were also observed (p <0.001). However, the rate of readmissions at 30-day (9% vs 11.1%) and 180-day intervals (33.4% vs 39.8%) was lower for the SAVR cohort (p <0.05). In recipients of SOT and patients with liver cirrhosis, SAVR is associated with greater short-term mortality, adverse events, and healthcare burden than is TAVR. TAVR is a relatively safer alternative to SAVR in these patient populations, although further studies are warranted to compare the long-term outcomes.

Chromium (Cr), a potent heavy metal, threatens rice cultivation due to its escalating presence in soil from human activities. Wild rice contains useful genes for phytoremediation; however, it is difficult to use directly for metal mitigation. Here, a single segment substitution line (SSSL), SG001, was developed by crossing O. glumaepatula and Huajingxian74 (HJX) to evaluate the survival ability of plants against Cr. Further, we explored the potential effect of calcium oxide nanoparticles (CaO-NPs) (50 µM) to minimize the toxic effect of Cr (100 µM) in rice cultivars, SG001 and HJX. The findings of this study indicated that Cr toxicity led to increased oxidative stress. This was shown by higher levels of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which was increased by 104% in SG001 and 177% in HJX, and malondialdehyde (MDA) increased by 79% in SG001 and 135% in HJX. Furthermore, it also depicted that Cr toxicity considerably declined shoot and root length, shoot and root fresh weight by 30%, 27%, 25%, and 20% in SG001 and 44%, 51%, 42%, and 45% in HJX, respectively. This mitigation was evidenced by decreased Cr contents, increased calcium (Ca) levels in SG001, and the maintenance of chlorophyll, antioxidant defense, and gene expression levels. Moreover, there was a notable reduction in MDA and H2O2, while the defense mechanisms of key antioxidants, including ascorbate peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione, catalase, and peroxidase were upregulated, along with an increase in soluble protein contents in both rice cultivars after applying CaO-NPs. CaO-NPs effectively restored cellular and subcellular structural integrity and growth in both lines, which had been seriously disrupted by Cr toxicity. Overall, our findings suggest that SG001, in combination with CaO-NPs, could serve as an effective strategy to mitigate Cr toxicity in plants.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in agricultural soil is a major global concern among the multitude of human health and food security. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) and plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) have been known to combat heavy metal toxicity in crops. Herein, the study intended to explore the interactive effect of treatments mediated by inoculation of PGPR and foliar applied ZnO-NPs to alleviate Cd induced phytotoxicity in wheat plants which is rarely investigated. For this purpose, TaEIL1 expression, morpho-physiological, and biochemical traits of wheat were examined. Our results revealed that Cd reduced growth and biomass, disrupted plant physiological and biochemical traits, and further expression patterns of TaEIL1. The foliar application of ZnO-NPs improved growth attributes, photosynthetic pigments, and gas exchange parameters in a dose-additive manner, and this effect was further amplified with a combination of PGPR. The combined application of ZnO-NPs (100 mg L-1) with PGPR considerably increased the catalase (CAT; 52.4%), peroxidase (POD; 57.4%), superoxide dismutase (SOD; 60.1%), ascorbate peroxidase (APX; 47.4%), leading to decreased malondialdehyde (MDA; 47.4%), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2; 38.2%) and electrolyte leakage (EL; 47.3%) under high Cd (20 mg kg-1) stress. Furthermore, results revealed a significant reduction in roots (56.3%), shoots (49.4%), and grains (59.4%) Cd concentration after the Combined treatment of ZnO-NPs and PGPR as compared to the control. Relative expression of TaEIL1 (two homologues) was evaluated under control (Cd 0), Cd, ZnO-NPs, PGPR, and combined treatments. Expression profiling revealed a differential expression pattern of TaEIL1 under different treatments. The expression pattern of TaEIL1 genes was upregulated under Cd stress but downregulated under combined ZnO-NPs and PGPR, revealing its crucial role in Cd stress tolerance. Inferentially, ZnO-NPs and PGPR showed significant potential to alleviate Cd toxicity in wheat by modulating the antioxidant defense system and TaEIL1 expression. By inhibiting Cd uptake, and facilitating their detoxification, this innovative approach ensures food safety and security.

Global climate change is anticipated to shift the soil bacterial community structure and plant nutrient utilization. The use of biochar amendment can positively influence soil bacterial community structure, soil properties, and nutrient use efficiency of crops. However, little is known about the underlying mechanism and response of bacterial community structure to biochar amendment, and its role in nutrient enhancement in soil and plants under elevated CO2. Herein, the effect of biochar amendment (0, 0.5, 1.5%) on soil bacterial community structure, spinach growth, physiology, and soil and plant nutrient status were investigated under two CO2 concentrations (400 and 600 µmol mol-1). Findings showed that biochar application 1.5% (B.2.E) significantly increased the abundance of the bacterial community responsible for growth and nutrient uptake i.e. Firmicutes (42.25%) Bacteroidetes (10.46%), and Gemmatimonadetes (125.75%) as compared to respective control (CK.E) but interestingly abundance of proteobacteria decreased (9.18%) under elevated CO2. Furthermore, the soil available N, P, and K showed a significant increase in higher biochar-amended treatments under elevated CO2. Spinach plants exhibited a notable enhancement in growth and photosynthetic pigments when exposed to elevated CO2 levels and biochar, as compared to ambient CO2 conditions. However, there was variability observed in the leaf gas exchange attributes. Elevated CO2 reduced spinach roots and leaves nutrient concentration. In contrast, the biochar amendment (B2.E) enhanced root and shoot Zinc (494.99%-155.33%), magnesium (261.15%-183.37%), manganese (80.04%-152.86%), potassium (576.24%-355.17%), calcium (261.88%-165.65%), copper (325.42%-282.53%) and iron (717.63%-177.90%) concentration by influencing plant physiology and bacterial community. These findings provide insights into the interaction between plant and bacterial community under future agroecosystems in response to the addition of biochar contributing to a deeper understanding of ecological dynamics.

Background: Antiplatelet therapy plays an important role in reducing the risk of stroke recurrence in patients with mild ischemic stroke or high-risk transient ischemic attack (TIA). However, data regarding the effectiveness and safety of using aspirin plus clopidogrel in dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) compared to aspirin alone in mild ischemic stroke is limited. Methods: PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, and ClinicalTrials.gov were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared DAPT to aspirin alone started within 72 hours in mild ischemic stroke or high-risk TIA. We used a random effects model to pool risk ratios (RRs) along with 95% CIs for clinical outcomes. Results: Four RCTs with 16,547 patients were included in this study. DAPT significantly reduced the risk of recurrent stroke by 26% (RR: 0.74; 95% CI: 0.67-0.83; p < 0.00001), ischemic stroke by 28% (RR: 0.72; 95% CI: 0.65-0.80; p < 0.00001), and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) by 24% (RR: 0.76; 95% CI: 0.68-0.84; p < 0.00001) compared to aspirin monotherapy. However, DAPT was associated with a significantly increased risk of moderate or severe bleeding (RR: 1.88; 95% CI: 1.10-3.23; p = 0.02) compared to aspirin alone. No significant differences were observed for hemorrhagic stroke (RR: 1.77; 95% CI: 0.96-3.29; p = 0.07), all-cause mortality (RR: 1.25; 95% CI: 0.87-1.80; p = 0.23), cardiovascular mortality (RR: 1.38; 95% CI: 0.81-2.33; p = 0.23), and myocardial infarction (RR: 1.63; 95% CI: 0.77-3.46; p = 0.20). Conclusion: DAPT involving aspirin plus clopidogrel reduces stroke recurrence and MACE but can lead to an increased risk of moderate or severe bleeding compared to aspirin monotherapy. Background: Methamphetamine is an emerging drug threat. The disparity in cardiomyopathy-associated hospital admissions among methamphetamine users (CAHMA) over the decade remains unknown. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the trends and prevalence of CAHMA by age, sex, race, and geographical region. Methods: We used data from 2008 to 2020 from the National Inpatient Sample database. We identified 12,845,919 cardiomyopathy-associated hospital admissions; among them, 222,727 were diagnosed as methamphetamine users. A generalized linear model with binomial link function was used to compute the prevalence ratio and 95% CI. Those who used other substances along with methamphetamine were excluded from the analysis. Results: CAHMA increased by 231% (P trend <0.001) from 2008 to 2020. CAHMA increased 345% for men (P trend <0.001) and 122% for women (P trend <0.001), 271% for non-Hispanic White (P trend <0.001), 254% for non-Hispanic Black (p trend <0.001), 565% for Hispanic (P trend <0.001), and 645% for non-Hispanic Asian (P trend <0.001) population. CAHMA also increased significantly in the West region (530%) (P trend <0.001) and South region (200%) (P trend <0.001) of the United States. Men, Hispanic population, age groups 26 to 40 and 41 to 64 years, and Western regions showed a significantly higher uptrend than their counterparts (P trend <0.001). Conclusions: CAHMA have increased significantly in the United States. Men, Hispanics, non-Hispanic Asian, age groups 41 to 64. and western regions showed a higher proportional increase highlighting gender-based, racial/ethnic, and regional disparities over the study period.

With the anticipated foliar application of nanoparticles (NPs) as a potential strategy to improve crop production and ameliorate heavy metal toxicity, it is crucial to evaluate the role of NPs in improving the nutrient content of plants under Lead (Pb) stress for achieving higher agriculture productivity to ensure food security. Herein, Brassica napus L. grown under Pb contaminated soil (300 mg/kg) was sprayed with different rates (0, 25, 50, and 100 mg/L) of TiO2 and ZnO-NPs. The plants were evaluated for growth attributes, photosynthetic pigments, leaf exchange attributes, oxidant and antioxidant enzyme activities. The results revealed that 100 mg/L NPs foliar application significantly augmented plant growth, photosynthetic pigments, and leaf gas exchange attributes. Furthermore, 100 mg/L TiO2 and ZnO-NPs application showed a maximum increase in SPAD values (79.1%, 68.9%). NPs foliar application (100 mg/L TiO2 and ZnO-NPs) also substantially reduced malondialdehyde (44.3%, 38.3%), hydrogen peroxide (59.9%, 53.1%), electrolyte leakage (74.8%, 68.3%), and increased peroxidase (93.8%, 89.1%), catalase (91.3%, 84.1%), superoxide dismutase (81.8%, 73.5%) and ascorbate peroxidase (78.5%, 73.7%) thereby reducing Pb accumulation. NPs foliar application (100 mg/L) significantly reduced root Pb (45.7%, 42.3%) and shoot Pb (84.1%, 76.7%) concentration in TiO2 and ZnO-NPs respectively, as compared to control. Importantly, macro and micronutrient analysis showed that foliar application 100 mg/L TiO2 and ZnO-NPs increased shoot zinc (58.4%, 78.7%) iron (79.3%, 89.9%), manganese (62.8%, 68.6%), magnesium (72.1%, 93.7%), calcium (58.2%, 69.9%) and potassium (81.5%, 68.6%) when compared to control without NPs. The same trend was observed for root nutrient concentration. In conclusion, we found that the TiO2 and ZnO-NPs have the greatest efficiency at 100 mg/L concentration to alleviate Pb induced toxicity on growth, photosynthesis, and nutrient content of Brassica napus L. NPs foliar application is a promising strategy to ensure sustainable agriculture and food safety under metal contamination.

Better crop stand establishment, a function of rapid and uniform seedling emergence, depends on the activities of germination-related enzymes, which is problematic when there is insufficient soil moisture. Different ways are in practice for counteracting this problem, including seed priming with different chemicals, which are considered helpful in obtaining better crop stand establishment to some extent through improved seed germination and seedling emergence. In this growth room experiment, caffeine was used as a seed priming agent to improve germination under moisture scarcity. Polyethylene glycol-8000 (18%) was added to Hoagland's nutrient solution to create drought stress (-0.65 MPa). The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized design (CRD), having four replications of each treatment. A newly developed wheat genotype SB-1 was used for the experimentation. Different doses of caffeine, i.e., 4 ppm, 8 ppm, 12 ppm, and 16 ppm, including no soaking and water soaking, were used as seed priming treatments. Water deficit caused oxidative stress and adversely affected the seed germination, seedling vigor, activities of germination enzymes, photosynthetic pigments, and antioxidative defense mechanism in roots and shoots of seedlings. Caffeine seed priming ameliorated the negative effects of water deficit on seed germination and seedling vigor, which was attributed to the reduction in lipid peroxidation and improvement in the activities of germination-related enzymes like glucosidase, amylase, and protease. Conclusively, seed priming with 12 ppm caffeine outperformed the other treatments and hence is recommended for better crop stand establishment under conditions of soil moisture deficit.

BACKGROUND: Catheter Ablation (CA) is an effective treatment for atrial fibrillation (AF). However, frail elderly patients have been understudied due to their exclusion from landmark trials. OBJECTIVES: Our study aims to evaluate outcomes in this population. METHODS: The national readmission database (2016-2020) was queried, and frailty categories were defined based on hospital risk frailty scores ≦5 as low while >5 as intermediate/high frailty (IHF). We used multivariate regression and propensity-matched analysis to compare outcomes in patients undergoing CA for atrial fibrillation based on frailty index. RESULTS: Among 55 936 CAs for AF, 33,248 patients had low frailty, while 22 688 had intermediate/high frailty (IHF). After propensity matching (N 12 448), IHF patients were found to have higher adverse events, including mortality (3% vs. 0.3%, p < .001), stroke (1.9% vs. 0.2%, p < .001), acute heart failure (53.8% vs. 42.2%, p < .001), AKI (42.5% vs. 6.8%, p < .001), pericardial complications (2.8 vs. 1.6%, p < .001), respiratory complications (27.8 vs. 7.2%, p < .001), major adverse cardiovascular events (21.2 vs. 9.4%, p < .001) and net adverse events (76.7 vs. 55%, p < .001). IHF patients had higher readmissions at 30 (15.5 vs. 12.6%, p < .001), 90 (31.9 vs. 25.1%, p < .001), and 180-day (41 vs. 34.7%, p < .001) intervals. A higher median length of stay (LOS) (7 vs. 3 days, p < .001) and cost ($44 287 vs. $27 517, p < .001) at index admission and subsequent readmissions were also observed (p < .001). CONCLUSION: Intermediate/high frailty patients undergoing catheter ablation had worse clinical outcomes, higher healthcare burden, and readmission rates. LOS has decreased in both groups from 2016 to 2020; however, total cost has increased.

BACKGROUND: Disparities in acute myocardial infarction (AMI)-related outcomes have been reported before the COVID-19 pandemic. We studied in-hospital outcomes of AMI across demographic groups in the United States during the early COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: The National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database was queried for 2020 to identify AMI-related hospitalizations based on appropriate ICD-10-CM codes categorized by sex, race, and hospital region categories. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality in females, racial and ethnic minority groups, and Northeast hospital region compared with males, White patients, and Midwest hospital region, respectively. Multivariable regression analysis was used to calculate the adjusted odds ratio and mean difference. RESULTS: A total of 820,893 AMI-related hospitalizations were identified during the study period. On adjusted analysis, during the early COVID-19 pandemic, females had lower odds of in-hospital mortality [aOR 0.89 (0.85-0.92); P < 0.01] and revascularization [aOR 0.68 (0.66-0.69); P < 0.01] than males. Racial and ethnic based analysis showed that Asian/Pacific Islander patients had higher odds of in-hospital mortality [aOR 1.13 (1.03-1.25); P < 0.01] than White patients. During the early COVID-19 pandemic, Northeast and Western region hospitals had higher odds of in-hospital mortality, lower odds of revascularization, longer length of stay, and higher total hospitalization costs than Midwest region hospitals. CONCLUSIONS: Our study disclosed disparities in AMI-related mortality and revascularization by sex, race and ethnic, and region during the early COVID-19 pandemic. Special attention should be given to at-risk populations. Whether these disparities continue in the post-vaccination era warrants further study.

Background: Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is on the rise worldwide, ranking as the third leading cause of atherosclerosis-related morbidity; much less is known about its trends in hospitalizations among methamphetamine and cocaine users. Objectives: We aim to evaluate the overall trend in the prevalence of hospital admission for PAD with or without the use of stimulant abuse (methamphetamine and cocaine) across the United States. Additionally, we evaluated the PAD-related hospitalizations trend stratified by age, race, sex, and geographic location. Methods: We used the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database from 2008 to 2020. The Cochran Armitage trend test was used to compare the trend between groups. Multivariate logistic regression was used to examine adjusted odds for PAD and CLI hospitalizations among methamphetamine and cocaine users. Results: Between 2008 and 2020, PAD-related hospitalizations showed an increasing trend in Hispanics, African Americans, and western states, while a decreasing trend in southern and Midwestern states (p-trend <0.05). Among methamphetamine users, an overall increasing trend was observed in men, women, western, southern, and midwestern states (p-trend <0.05). However, among cocaine users, PAD-related hospitalization increased significantly for White, African American, age group >64 years, southern and western states (p-trend <0.05). Overall, CLI-related hospitalizations showed an encouraging decreasing trend in men and women, age group >64 years, and CLI-related amputations declined for women, White patient population, age group >40, and all regions (p-trend <0.05). However, among methamphetamine users, a significantly increasing trend in CLI-related hospitalization was seen in men, women, White & Hispanic population, age group 26-45, western, southern, and midwestern regions. Conclusions: There was an increasing trend in PAD-related hospitalizations among methamphetamine and cocaine users for both males and females. Although an overall decreasing trend in CLI-related hospitalization was observed for both genders, an up-trend in CLI was seen among methamphetamine users. The upward trends were more prominent for White, Hispanic & African Americans, and southern and western states, highlighting racial and geographic variations over the study period.

Tamarindus indica, a beneficial herb, has many health benefits but there is limited research on its use in fish nutrition industry. The current study investigated the effects of incorporating extracts of T. indica into the canola meal-based diets of Cyprinus carpio (common carp); following which, the growth, digestibility, carcass and hematological markers were assessed. A total of six diets were formulated with varying concentrations of T. indica extracts (TIE) viz, 0 %, 0.5 %, 1 %, 1.5 %, 2 % and 2.5 %. The fish (N = 270, 15 fish/tank with triplicates) in each tank were fed experimental diets for 70 days. The study demonstrated that TIE supplementation significantly improved the growth of common carp when compared to 0 % TIE level (control). The best results were observed at 1 % TIE level for the specific growth rate (1.68 ± 0.03 %), weight gain (15.00 ± 0.57 g), and feed conversion ratio (1.36 ± 0.05). Conversely, the 2.5 % TIE level gave the least improvement in terms of growth performance. Specifically for nutrient digestibility, the maximum values of crude protein (CP, 67.60 ± 0.83 %), crude fat (CF, 67.49 ± 0.45 %) and gross energy (GE, 70.90 ± 0.56 %) were recorded at 1 % TIE level. In addition, the best results of body composition (protein: 63.92 ± 0.06 %, ash: 18.60 ± 0.03 %, fat: 7.12 ± 0.02 % and moisture: 10.36 ± 0.04 %) and hematological indices, were measured in carps fed with 1 % supplementation level. In conclusion, the overall health of C. carpio fingerlings was improved with TIE supplementation in the diet containing 1 % TIE.

Soil salinity is a major nutritional challenge with poor agriculture production characterized by high sodium (Na+) ions in the soil. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) and biochar have received attention as a sustainable strategy to reduce biotic and abiotic stress. However, there is a lack of information regarding the incorporation of ZnO NPs with biochar to ameliorate the salinity stress (0, 50,100 mM). Therefore, the current study aimed to investigate the potentials of ZnO NPs application (priming and foliar) alone and with a combination of biochar on the growth and nutrient availability of spinach plants under salinity stress. Results demonstrated that salinity stress at a higher rate (100 mM) showed maximum growth retardation by inducing oxidative stress, resulted in reduced photosynthetic rate and nutrient availability. ZnO NPs (priming and foliar) alone enhanced growth, chlorophyll contents and gas exchange parameters by improving the antioxidant enzymes activity of spinach under salinity stress. While, a significant and more pronounced effect was observed at combined treatments of ZnO NPs with biochar amendment. More importantly, ZnO NPs foliar application with biochar significantly reduced the Na+ contents in root 57.69%, and leaves 61.27% of spinach as compared to the respective control. Furthermore, higher nutrient contents were also found at the combined treatment of ZnO NPs foliar application with biochar. Overall, ZnO NPs combined application with biochar proved to be an efficient and sustainable strategy to alleviate salinity stress and improve crop nutritional quality under salinity stress. We inferred that ZnO NPs foliar application with a combination of biochar is more effectual in improving crop nutritional status and salinity mitigation than priming treatments with a combination of biochar.
