RESUMEN

Sarcopenia is a pathology resulting from a progressive and severe loss of muscle mass, strength, and function in the course of aging, which has deleterious consequences on quality of life. Among the most widespread studies on the issue are those focused on the effect of different types of physical exercise on patients with sarcopenia. This randomized controlled study aimed to compare the effects of a whole-body vibration exercise (WBV) session on the inflammatory parameters of non-sarcopenic (NSG, n=22) and sarcopenic elderly (SG, n=22). NSG and SG participants were randomly divided into two protocols: intervention (squat with WBV) and control (squat without WBV). After a one-week washout period, participants switched protocols, so that everyone performed both protocols. Body composition was assessed by dual-energy radiological absorptiometry (DXA) and function through the six-minute walk test (6MWD) and Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB). Plasma soluble tumor necrosis factor receptors (sTNFR) were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and measured before and immediately after each protocol. After exercise with WBV, there was an increase in sTNFR2 levels in the NSG (P<0.01; d=-0.69 (-1.30; -0.08) and SG (P<0.01, d=-0.95 (-1.57; -0.32) groups. In conclusion, an acute session of WBV influenced sTNFr2 levels, with sarcopenic individuals showing a greater effect. This suggested that WBV had a more pronounced impact on sTNFr2 in those with loss of muscle strength and/or physical performance. Additionally, WBV is gaining recognition as an efficient strategy for those with persistent health issues.

RESUMEN

Objectives: To evaluate the association of physical and functional measures with sarcopenia in moderate chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and to establish cutoff points for sarcopenia screening. Methods: The study included COPD with and without sarcopenia, of both sexes who were over 50 years old. Participants were assessed for lung function, body composition, grip strength, Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), 5-repetition, 10-repetition and 30-s sit-to-stand tests (5STS, 10STS, and 30STS, respectively). In addition, 6-min walking test, respiratory muscular strength, and physical activity level were tested. Results: The study had 35 participants, 24 men (68.6%) and moderate COPD (51.4%). COPD-sarcopenia showed lower values in lean mass, body fat and body mass alongside lower performance in 10 and 30 STS tests, SPPB and gait speed compared to non-sarcopenic group. The cutoff points with better sensitivity and specificity to identify sarcopenia were 10.88 and 34.14 s, 15 repetitions, and 10 points in the 5STS, 10STS, 30STS, and SPPB, respectively. The comparison of the receiver operating curves evidenced no differences between the functional tests. Only 30STS and SPPB showed acceptable discriminatory power. Conclusion: Functional tests, especially 30STS and SPPB, are simple and affordable tools for screening sarcopenia in COPD with moderate obstruction.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of saliva for the identification of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant patients by real time PCR compared with blood. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Saliva and blood samples were sampled weekly in 30 allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant patients until 100 days after transplant. Total genomic DNA, extracted from saliva and whole-blood samples, was used for HCMV real time PCR. Nonparametric tests were performed, and P value

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To qualitatively compare the effectiveness of the Er:YAG laser with conventional methods for removing the composite remnants and the enamel ablation produced after bracket debonding. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Brackets were bonded on 12 extracted premolars and the composite remnants were removed by 3 different methods: tungsten-carbide bur and 2 Er:YAG laser intervals. Four other premolars were used as a control group. Samples were analyzed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the amount of composite remaining on the teeth and the amount of enamel ablated on each sample were qualitatively ranked by 3 examiners. The results were statistically analyzed by the Tukey test. RESULTS: The Er:YAG laser performed significantly better than the conventional technique for removing the composite remnants, but the amount of enamel ablation produced was significantly higher. CONCLUSIONS: The Er:YAG laser can be used to remove composite remnants after orthodontic bracket debonding, but further studies are required to determine the ideal specifications of this type of laser to reduce the amount of enamel ablation produced under the specifications used in this study.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Considering that hMSH2, hMLH1 and p53 are important in maintaining genomic stability of the oral mucosa epithelium, the purpose of the present study was to investigate the immunolocalization of these proteins in the epithelium of the oral mucosa of patients submitted to bone marrow transplantation (BMT) compared with controls. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-one samples of lip biopsies from BMT recipients were retrieved. Twenty samples of normal lower labial mucosa associated with mucocele in non-transplanted patients were included as control group. The streptavidin-biotin complex stain was used to detect the human DNA mismatch repair proteins hMSH2, hMLH1 and p53 protein. RESULTS: The main findings demonstrated that the mean number of suprabasal epithelial cells positive for MSH2 was statistically higher than the control group. The immunostaining of hMLH1 and p53 at the basal and suprabasal epithelial layers were statistically higher in the oral labial mucosa of the BMT patients compared with controls. CONCLUSION: The present study shows that oral epithelial cells of BMT patients show increased immunolocalization of the DNA repair related proteins.

RESUMEN

Split lengthening of the inferior oblique muscle(s) was performed in 20 patients for the correction of V-pattern, employing bilateral or unilateral surgery. In four patients unilateral split lengthening of the inferior oblique was done for the correction of hypertropia. The average correction of V-pattern was 16.9 pd with bilateral surgery and 13.3 pd with unilateral surgery. The average correction of hypertropia was 11.8 pd with only unilateral surgery.
