RESUMEN

Plasmonic nanomaterials, particularly noble metal nanoframes (NFs), are important for applications such as catalysis, biosensing, and energy harvesting due to their ability to enhance localized electric fields and atomic efficiency via localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). Yet the fundamental structure-function relationships and plasmonic dynamics of the NFS are difficult to study experimentally and thus far rely predominately on computational methodologies, limiting their utilization. This study leverages the capabilities of ultrafast electron microscopy (UEM), specifically photon-induced near-field electron microscopy (PINEM), to probe the light-matter interactions within plasmonic NF structures. The effects of shape, size, and plasmonic coupling of Pt@Au core-shell NFs on spatial and temporal characteristics of plasmon-enhanced localized electric fields are explored. Importantly, time-resolved PINEM analysis reveals that the plasmonic fields around hexagonal NF prisms exhibit a spatially dependent excitation and decay rate, indicating a nuanced interplay between the spatial geometry of the NF and the temporal evolution of the localized electric field. These results and observations uncover nanophotonic energy transfer dynamics in NFs and highlight their potential for applications in biosensing and photocatalysis.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: To uncover the predictive value of systemic immune-inflammatory index (SII) and systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI) on early pregnancy loss. METHODS: A total of 535 individuals were enrolled in this retrospective analysis. The early pregnancy losses (EPL) group included patients between 18-35 years old who experienced EPL. The control group comprised healthy pregnant women who gave birth at ≥37 weeks. RESULTS: The EPL group had significantly lower plateletcrit (p=0.04), platelet distribution width (PDW, p<0.0001), and RDW (p<0.0001) and higher monocyte (p<0.0001) and SIRI (p<0.0001) values than the control group. The hemoglobin, white blood cells, platelet count, neutrophil count, lymphocyte count, mean platelet volume, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), and SII values were not significantly different between the EPL and control groups (p>0.05). The cut-off value for the SIRI that offers the best sensitivity/specificity balance was 1.48 (sensitivity of 63%; specificity of 63%) in the receiver operating characteristics curve. Among the inflammatory parameters for predicting EPL, PDW had highest specificity (84%), and RDW had the highest sensitivity (80%). CONCLUSION: This study provides compelling evidence that various inflammatory pathways may significantly contribute to EPL pathogenesis. Moreover, our findings suggest that SIRI could be a more effective marker than NLR, PLR, MLR, and SII in predicting EPL in an ongoing pregnancy, thereby potentially revolutionizing early pregnancy loss diagnostics.

RESUMEN

Electrical control of charge density waves has been of immense interest, as the strong underlying electron-lattice interactions potentially open new, efficient pathways for manipulating their ordering and, consequently, their electronic properties. However, the transition mechanisms are often unclear as electric field, current, carrier injection, heat, and strain can all contribute and play varying roles across length scales and timescales. Here, we provide insight on how electrical stimulation melts the room temperature charge density wave order in 1T-TaS_{2} by visualizing the atomic and mesoscopic structural dynamics from quasi-static to nanosecond pulsed melting. Using a newly developed ultrafast electron microscope setup with electrical stimulation, we reveal the order and strain dynamics during voltage pulses as short as 20 ns. The order parameter dynamics across a range of pulse amplitudes and durations support a thermally driven mechanism even for fields as high as 19 kV cm^{-1}. In addition, time-resolved imaging reveals a heterogeneous, mesoscopic strain response across the flake, including MHz-scale acoustic resonances that emerge during sufficiently short pulsed excitation which may modulate the order. These results suggest that metallic charge density wave phases like studied here may be more robust to electronic switching pathways than insulating ones, motivating further investigations at higher fields and currents in this and other related systems.

RESUMEN

Strong spin-lattice coupling in van der Waals (vdW) magnets shows potential for innovative magneto-mechanical applications. Here, nanoscale and picosecond imaging by ultrafast electron microscopy reveal heterogeneous spin-mediated coherent acoustic phonon dynamics in a thin-film cavity of the vdW antiferromagnet FePS3. The harmonics of the interlayer shear acoustic modes are observed, in which the even and odd harmonics exhibit distinct nanoscopic dynamics. Corroborated by acoustic wave simulation, the role of defects in forming even harmonics is elucidated. Above the Néel temperature (TN), the interlayer shear acoustic harmonics are suppressed, while the in-plane traveling wave is predominantly excited. The dominant acoustic dynamics shifts from the out-of-plane shear to the in-plane traveling wave across TN, demonstrating that magnetic properties can influence phonon scattering pathways. The spatiotemporally resolved structural characterization provides valuable nanoscopic insights for interlayer-shear-mode-based acoustic cavities, opening up possibilities for magneto-mechanical applications of vdW magnets.

RESUMEN

Premelting of ice, a quasi-liquid layer (QLL) at the surface below the melting temperature, was first postulated by Michael Faraday 160 y ago. Since then, it has been extensively studied theoretically and experimentally through many techniques. Existing work has been performed predominantly on hexagonal ice, at conditions close to the triple point. Whether the same phenomenon can persist at much lower pressure and temperature, where stacking disordered ice sublimates directly into water vapor, remains unclear. Herein, we report direct observations of surface premelting on ice nanocrystals below the sublimation temperature using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Similar to what has been reported on hexagonal ice, a QLL is found at the solid-vapor interface. It preferentially decorates certain facets, and its thickness increases as the phase transition temperature is approached. In situ TEM reveals strong diffusion of the QLL, while electron energy loss spectroscopy confirms its amorphous nature. More significantly, the premelting observed in this work is thought to be related to the metastable low-density ultraviscous water, instead of ambient liquid water as in the case of hexagonal ice. This opens a route to understand premelting and grassy liquid state, far away from the normal water triple point.

RESUMEN

Understanding how microscopic spin configuration gives rise to exotic properties at the macroscopic length scale has long been pursued in magnetic materials1-5. One seminal example is the Einstein-de Haas effect in ferromagnets1,6,7, in which angular momentum of spins can be converted into mechanical rotation of an entire object. However, for antiferromagnets without net magnetic moment, how spin ordering couples to macroscopic movement remains elusive. Here we observed a seesaw-like rotation of reciprocal lattice peaks of an antiferromagnetic nanolayer film, whose gigahertz structural resonance exhibits more than an order-of-magnitude amplification after cooling below the Néel temperature. Using a suite of ultrafast diffraction and microscopy techniques, we directly visualize this spin-driven rotation in reciprocal space at the nanoscale. This motion corresponds to interlayer shear in real space, in which individual micro-patches of the film behave as coherent oscillators that are phase-locked and shear along the same in-plane axis. Using time-resolved optical polarimetry, we further show that the enhanced mechanical response strongly correlates with ultrafast demagnetization, which releases elastic energy stored in local strain gradients to drive the oscillators. Our work not only offers the first microscopic view of spin-mediated mechanical motion of an antiferromagnet but it also identifies a new route towards realizing high-frequency resonators8,9 up to the millimetre band, so the capability of controlling magnetic states on the ultrafast timescale10-13 can be readily transferred to engineering the mechanical properties of nanodevices.

RESUMEN

The unique topology and physics of chiral superlattices make their self-assembly from nanoparticles highly sought after yet challenging in regard to (meta)materials1-3. Here we show that tetrahedral gold nanoparticles can transform from a perovskite-like, low-density phase with corner-to-corner connections into pinwheel assemblies with corner-to-edge connections and denser packing. Whereas corner-sharing assemblies are achiral, pinwheel superlattices become strongly mirror asymmetric on solid substrates as demonstrated by chirality measures. Liquid-phase transmission electron microscopy and computational models show that van der Waals and electrostatic interactions between nanoparticles control thermodynamic equilibrium. Variable corner-to-edge connections among tetrahedra enable fine-tuning of chirality. The domains of the bilayer superlattices show strong chiroptical activity as identified by photon-induced near-field electron microscopy and finite-difference time-domain simulations. The simplicity and versatility of substrate-supported chiral superlattices facilitate the manufacture of metastructured coatings with unusual optical, mechanical and electronic characteristics.

RESUMEN

Mechanical integrity issues such as particle cracking are considered one of the leading causes of structural deterioration and limited long-term cycle stability for Ni-rich cathode materials of Li-ion batteries. Indeed, the detrimental effects generated from the crack formation are not yet entirely addressed. Here, applying physicochemical and electrochemical ex situ and in situ characterizations, the effect of Co and Mn on the mechanical properties of the Ni-rich material are thoroughly investigated. As a result, we successfully mitigate the particle cracking issue in Ni-rich cathodes via rational concentration gradient design without sacrificing the electrode capacity. Our result reveals that the Co-enriched surface design in Ni-rich particles benefits from its low stiffness, which can effectively suppress the formation of particle cracking. Meanwhile, the Mn-enriched core limits internal expansion and improve structural integrity. The concentration gradient design also promotes morphological stability and cycling performances in Li metal coin cell configuration.

RESUMEN

Hybrids of graphene and metal plasmonic nanostructures are promising building blocks for applications in optoelectronics, surface-enhanced scattering, biosensing, and quantum information. An understanding of the coupling mechanism in these hybrid systems is of vital importance to its applications. Previous efforts in this field mainly focused on spectroscopic studies of strong coupling within the hybrids with no spatial resolution. Here we report direct imaging of the local plasmonic coupling between single Au nanocapsules and graphene step edges at the nanometer scale by photon-induced near-field electron microscopy in an ultrafast electron microscope for the first time. The proximity of a step in the graphene to the nanocapsule causes asymmetric surface charge density at the ends of the nanocapsules. Computational electromagnetic simulations confirm the experimental observations. The results reported here indicate that this hybrid system could be used to manipulate the localized electromagnetic field on the nanoscale, enabling promising future plasmonic devices.

RESUMEN

Resistance switching in metal-insulator-metal structures has been extensively studied in recent years for use as synaptic elements for neuromorphic computing and as nonvolatile memory elements. However, high switching power requirements, device variabilities, and considerable trade-offs between low operating voltages, high on/off ratios, and low leakage have limited their utility. In this work, we have addressed these issues by demonstrating the use of ultraporous dielectrics as a pathway for high-performance resistive memory devices. Using a modified atomic layer deposition based technique known as sequential infiltration synthesis, which was developed originally for improving polymer properties such as enhanced etch resistance of electron-beam resists and for the creation of films for filtration and oleophilic applications, we are able to create ∼15 nm thick ultraporous (pore size ∼5 nm) oxide dielectrics with up to 73% porosity as the medium for filament formation. We show, using the Ag/Al2O3 system, that the ultraporous films result in ultrahigh on/off ratio (>109) at ultralow switching voltages (∼±600 mV) that are 10× smaller than those for the bulk case. In addition, the devices demonstrate fast switching, pulsed endurance up to 1 million cycles. and high temperature (125 °C) retention up to 104 s, making this approach highly promising for large-scale neuromorphic and memory applications. Additionally, this synthesis methodology provides a compatible, inexpensive route that is scalable and compatible with existing semiconductor nanofabrication methods and materials.

RESUMEN

Glutamate, one of the main neurotransmitters in the brain, plays a critical role in communication between neurons, neuronal development, and various neurological disorders. Extracellular measurement of neurotransmitters such as glutamate in the brain is important for understanding these processes and developing a new generation of brain-machine interfaces. Here, we demonstrate the use of a perovskite nickelate-Nafion heterostructure as a promising glutamate sensor with a low detection limit of 16 nM and a response time of 1.2 s via amperometric sensing. We have designed and successfully tested novel perovskite nickelate-Nafion electrodes for recording of glutamate release ex vivo in electrically stimulated brain slices and in vivo from the primary visual cortex (V1) of awake mice exposed to visual stimuli. These results demonstrate the potential of perovskite nickelates as sensing media for brain-machine interfaces.

RESUMEN

Understanding the atomically precise arrangement of atoms at epitaxial interfaces is important for emerging technologies such as quantum materials that have function and performance dictated by bonds and defects that are energetically active on the micro-electronvolt scale. A combination of atomistic modeling and dislocation theory analysis describes both primary and secondary dislocation networks at the metamorphic Al/Si (111) interface, which is experimentally validated by atomic resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy. The electron microscopy images show primary misfit dislocations for the majority of the strain relief and evidence of a secondary structure allowing for complete relaxation of the Al-Si misfit strain. This study demonstrates the equilibrium interface that represents the lowest energy structure of a highly mismatched and semicoherent single-crystal interface with complete strain relief in an atomically abrupt structure.

RESUMEN

Electron tomography has become an essential tool for three-dimensional (3D) characterization of nanomaterials. In recent years, advances have been made in specimen preparation and mounting, acquisition geometries, and reconstruction algorithms. All of these components work together to optimize the resolution and clarity of an electron tomogram. However, one important component of the data-processing has received less attention: the 2D tilt series alignment. This is challenging for a number of reasons, namely because the nature of the data sets and the need to be coherently aligned over the full range of angles. An inaccurate alignment may be difficult to identify, yet can significantly limit the final 3D resolution. In this work, we present an improved center-of-mass alignment model that allows us to overcome discrepancies from unwanted objects that enter the imaging area throughout the tilt series. In particular, we develop an approach to overcome changes in the total mass upon rotation of the imaging area. We apply our approach to accurately recover small Pt nanoparticles embedded in a zeolite that may otherwise go undetected both in the 2D microscopy images and the 3D reconstruction. In addition to this, we highlight the particular effectiveness of the compressed sensing methods with this data set.

RESUMEN

A study was made by a combination of 3D electron tomography reconstruction methods and N2 adsorption for determining the fractal dimension for nanometric MoS2 and MoS2/Co catalyst particles. DFT methods including Neimarke-Kiselev's method allowed to determine the particle porosity and fractal arrays at the atomic scale for the S-Mo-S(Co) 2D- layers that conform the spherically shaped catalyst particles. A structural and textural correlation was sought by further characterization performed by x-ray Rietveld refinement and Radial Distribution Function (RDF) methods, electron density maps, computational density functional theory methods and nitrogen adsorption methods altogether, for studying the structural and textural features of spherical MoS2 and MoS2/Co particles. Neimark-Kiselev's equations afforded the evaluation of a pore volume variation from 10 to 110 cm3/g by cobalt insertion in the MoS2 crystallographic lattice, which induces the formation of cavities and throats in between of less than 29 nm, with a curvature radius r k < 14.4 nm; typical large needle-like arrays having 20 2D layers units correspond to a model consisting of smooth surfaces within these cavities. Decreasing D P , D B , D I and D M values occur when Co atoms are present in the MoS2 laminates, which promote the formation of smoother edges and denser surfaces that have an influence on the catalytic properties of the S-Mo-S(Co) system.

RESUMEN

Over the last decade or so, reconstruction methods using ℓ1 regularization, often categorized as compressed sensing (CS) algorithms, have significantly improved the capabilities of high fidelity imaging in electron tomography. The most popular ℓ1 regularization approach within electron tomography has been total variation (TV) regularization. In addition to reducing unwanted noise, TV regularization encourages a piecewise constant solution with sparse boundary regions. In this paper we propose an alternative ℓ1 regularization approach for electron tomography based on higher order total variation (HOTV). Like TV, the HOTV approach promotes solutions with sparse boundary regions. In smooth regions however, the solution is not limited to piecewise constant behavior. We demonstrate that this allows for more accurate reconstruction of a broader class of images - even those for which TV was designed for - particularly when dealing with pragmatic tomographic sampling patterns and very fine image features. We develop results for an electron tomography data set as well as a phantom example, and we also make comparisons with discrete tomography approaches.

RESUMEN

Missing silicon-oxygen bonds in zeolites are shown to be the cause for structural instability of zeolites in hot liquid water. Their selective removal drastically improved their structural stability as demonstrated using zeolite beta as example. The defects in the siloxy bonds were capped by reaction with trimethylchlorosilane, and Si-O-Si bonds were eventually formed. Hydrolysis of Si-O-Si bonds of the parent materials and dissolution of silica-oxygen tetrahedra in water causing a decrease in sorption capacity by reprecipitation of dissolved silica and pore blocking was largely mitigated by the treatment. The stability of the modified molecular sieves was monitored by (29)Si-MAS NMR, transmission electron micrographs, X-ray diffraction, and adsorption isotherms. The microporosity, sorption capacity, and long-range order of the stabilized material were fully retained even after prolonged exposure to hot liquid water.

RESUMEN

Synthesizing nanomaterials of uniform shape and size is of critical importance to access and manipulate the novel structure-property relationships arising at the nanoscale, such as catalytic activity. In this work, we synthesize Pd nanoparticles with well-controlled size in the sub-3 nm range using scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) in combination with an in situ liquid stage. We use an aromatic hydrocarbon (toluene) as a solvent that is very resistant to high-energy electron irradiation, which creates a net reducing environment without the need for additives to scavenge oxidizing radicals. The primary reducing species is molecular hydrogen, which is a widely used reductant in the synthesis of supported metal catalysts. We propose a mechanism of particle formation based on the effect of tri-n-octylphosphine (TOP) on size stabilization, relatively low production of radicals, and autocatalytic reduction of Pd(II) compounds. We combine in situ STEM results with insights from in situ small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) from alcohol-based synthesis, having similar reduction potential, in a customized microfluidic device as well as ex situ bulk experiments. This has allowed us to develop a fundamental growth model for the synthesis of size-stabilized Pd nanoparticles and demonstrate the utility of correlating different in situ and ex situ characterization techniques to understand, and ultimately control, metal nanostructure synthesis.

RESUMEN

Zeolite delamination increases the external surface area available for catalyzing the conversion of bulky molecules, but a fundamental understanding of the delamination process remains unknown. Here we report morphological changes accompanying delamination on the length scale of individual zeolite clusters determined by 3-D imaging in scanning transmission electron microscopy. The results are tomograms that demonstrate delamination as it proceeds on the nanoscale through two distinct key steps: a chemical treatment that leads to a swelled material and a subsequent calcination that leads to curling and peeling off of delaminated zeolite sheets over hundreds of nanometers. These results characterize the direct, local, 3-D morphological changes accompanying delaminated materials synthesis and, with corroboration by mercury porosimetry, provide unique insight into the morphology of these materials, which is difficult to obtain with any other technique.
