RESUMEN

Background: Although its incidence is relatively low, delayed-onset post-stroke cognitive decline (PSCD) may offer valuable insights into the "vascular contributions to cognitive impairment and dementia," particularly concerning the roles of vascular and neurodegenerative mechanisms. We postulated that the functional segregation observed during post-stroke compensation could be disrupted by underlying amyloid pathology or cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD), leading to delayed-onset PSCD. Methods: Using a prospective stroke registry, we identified patients who displayed normal cognitive function at baseline evaluation within a year post-stroke and received at least one subsequent assessment. Patients suspected of pre-stroke cognitive decline were excluded. Decliners [defined by a decrease of ≥3 Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) points annually or an absolute drop of ≥5 points between evaluations, confirmed with detailed neuropsychological tests] were compared with age- and stroke severity-matched non-decliners. Index-stroke MRI, resting-state functional MRI, and 18F-florbetaben PET were used to identify cSVD, functional network attributes, and amyloid deposits, respectively. PET data from age-, sex-, education-, and apolipoprotein E-matched stroke-free controls within a community-dwelling cohort were used to benchmark amyloid deposition. Results: Among 208 eligible patients, 11 decliners and 10 matched non-decliners were identified over an average follow-up of 5.7 years. No significant differences in cSVD markers were noted between the groups, except for white matter hyperintensities (WMHs), which were strongly linked with MMSE scores among decliners (rho = -0.85, p < 0.01). Only one decliner was amyloid-positive, yet subthreshold PET standardized uptake value ratios (SUVR) in amyloid-negative decliners inversely correlated with final MMSE scores (rho = -0.67, p = 0.04). Decliners exhibited disrupted modular structures and more intermingled canonical networks compared to non-decliners. Notably, the somato-motor network's system segregation corresponded with the decliners' final MMSE (rho = 0.67, p = 0.03) and was associated with WMH volume and amyloid SUVR. Conclusion: Disruptions in modular structures, system segregation, and inter-network communication in the brain may be the pathophysiological underpinnings of delayed-onset PSCD. WMHs and subthreshold amyloid deposition could contribute to these disruptions in functional brain networks. Given the limited number of patients and potential residual confounding, our results should be considered hypothesis-generating and need replication in larger cohorts in the future.

Erastin, a ferroptosis-inducing system xc- inhibitor, faces clinical challenges due to suboptimal physicochemical and pharmacokinetic properties, as well as relatively low potency and off-target toxicity. Addressing these, we developed ECINs, a novel laser-responsive erastin-loaded nanomedicine utilizing indocyanine green (ICG)-grafted chondroitin sulfate A (CSA) derivatives. Our aim was to improve erastin's tumor targeting via CSA-CD44 interactions and enhance its antitumor efficacy through ICG's photothermal and photodynamic effects in the laser-on state while minimizing off-target effects in the laser-off state. ECINs, with their nanoscale size of 186.7 ± 1.1 nm and high erastin encapsulation efficiency of 93.0 ± 0.8%, showed excellent colloidal stability and sustained drug release up to 120 h. In vitro, ECINs demonstrated a mechanism of cancer cell inhibition via G1-phase cell cycle arrest, indicating a non-ferroptotic action. In vivo biodistribution studies in SK-HEP-1 xenograft mice revealed that ECINs significantly enhanced tumor distribution of erastin (1.9-fold greater than free erastin) while substantially reducing off-target accumulation in the lungs and spleen by 203-fold and 19.1-fold, respectively. Combined with laser irradiation, ECINs significantly decreased tumor size (2.6-fold, compared to free erastin; 2.4-fold, compared to ECINs without laser irradiation) with minimal systemic toxicity. This study highlights ECINs as a dual-modality approach for liver cancer treatment, demonstrating significant efficacy against tumors overexpressing CD44 and system xc-.

Background: Rehabilitation is recognized as an effective means of alleviating the symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD) and improving the physical and cognitive functions of patients with PD. However, research often focuses on short-term outcomes such as functioning and quality of life. This study investigated the association between the length of stay in rehabilitation and mortality among patients with PD. Methods: Using the Korean National Health Insurance Service database, we identified 636 participants diagnosed with PD who received rehabilitation. The main outcome was all-cause mortality. We used a Cox proportional hazards regression model to examine the relationship between length of stay in rehabilitation and mortality among patients with PD. Results: The final sample comprised 374 females (58.81%) and 262 males (41.19%). A survival analysis revealed a significant association between the length of stay in rehabilitation and mortality, with a decrease in mortality of 16.1% in patients with PD who received one year of rehabilitation (hazard ratio = 0.839, 95% confidence interval = 0.788-0.895). Conclusion: Our findings underscore the potential benefits of timely implementation of rehabilitative interventions in patients with PD and the need for comprehensive and long-term rehabilitation strategies. It also highlights the necessity of such services for patients with PD and the importance of developing patient-centered rehabilitation guidelines.

Although charge-converting nanoparticles (NPs) potentially penetrate tumours deeply, conventional charge conversion strategies possess limitations, including low selectivity and slow, inconsistent conversion rate within the tumour microenvironment. In this study, we synthesized a zwitterionic near-infrared cyclodextrin derivative of heptamethine cyanine and complexed it with pheophorbide-conjugated ferrocene to produce multifunctional theranostic nanotherapeutics. Our NPs demonstrated enhanced tumour-targeting ability, enabling the highly specific imaging of rectal tumours, with tumour-to-rectum signal ratios reaching up to 7.8. The zwitterionic surface charge of the NPs was rapidly converted to a cationic charge within the tumours on 880 nm near-infrared laser irradiation, promoting the tumoural penetration of NPs via transcytosis. After penetration, photodynamic/chemodynamic therapy was initiated using a 660 nm laser. Our NPs eradicated clinically relevant-sized heterotopic tumours (~250 mm3) and orthotopic rectal tumours, displaying their potential as theranostic nanoplatforms for targeting rectal cancer.

This study was conducted to characterize different colored lines of cherry tomatoes and derive information regarding their metabolite accumulation. Different colored cherry tomato cultivars, namely 'Jocheong', 'BN Satnolang', 'Gold Chance', 'Black Q', and 'Snacktom', were assessed for their firmness, taste characteristics, and nutritional metabolites at the commercial ripening stage. The cultivars demonstrated firmness to withstand impacts during harvesting and postharvest operations. The significant variations in the Brix to acid ratio (BAR) and the contents of phenylalanine, glutamic acid, and aspartic acid highlight the distinct taste characteristics among the cultivars, and the nutritional metabolites are associated with the color of the cultivars. The cultivar choices would be the black-colored 'Black Q' for chlorophylls, ß-carotene, total flavonoids, and anthocyanins; the red-colored 'Snacktom' for lycopene; the orange-colored 'Gold Chance' for total phenolics; and the green-colored 'Jocheong' for chlorophylls, vitamin C, GABA, glutamic acid, essential amino acids, and total free amino acids. The antioxidant capacity varied among the cultivars, with 'Gold Chance' consistently exhibiting the highest activity across the four assays, followed by 'Snacktom'. This study emphasizes the importance of screening cultivars to support breeding programs for improving the nutritional content and encourages the inclusion of a diverse mix of different colored cherry tomatoes in packaging to obtain the cumulative or synergistic effects of secondary metabolites.

Background: This research main objective was to evaluate a proliposomes (PLs) formulation for the enhancement of oral bioavailability of ginsenosides, using ginsenoside Rg3 (Rg3) as a marker. Methods: A novel PLs formulation was prepared using a modified evaporation-on-matrix method. Soy phosphatidylcholine, Rg3-enriched extract, poloxamer 188 (Lutrol® F 68) and sorbitol were mixed and dissolved using a aqueous ethanolic solution, followed by the removal of ethanol and lyophilization. The characterization of Rg3-PLs formulations was performed by powder X-ray diffractometry (PXRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and in vitro release. The enhancement of oral bioavailability was investigated and analyzed by non-compartmental parameters after oral administration of the formulations. Results: PXRD of Rg3-PLs indicated that Rg3 was transformed from crystalline into its amorphous form during the preparation process. The Rg3-encapsulated liposomes with vesicular-shaped morphology were generated after the reconstitution by gentle hand-shaking in water; they had a mean diameter of approximately 350 nm, a negative zeta potential (-28.6 mV) and a high entrapment efficiency (97.3%). The results of the in vitro release study exhibited that significantly more amount of Rg3 was released from the PLs formulation in comparison with that from the suspension of Rg3-enriched extract (control group). The pharmacokinetic parameters after oral administration of PLs formulation in rats showed an approximately 11.8-fold increase in the bioavailability of Rg3, compared to that of the control group. Conclusion: The developed PLs formulation could be a favorable delivery system to improve the oral bioavailability of ginsenosides, including Rg3.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence and prognostic role of programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression and tumor mutational burden (TMB) in patients with non-immunotherapy-treated advanced cervical cancer. METHODS: Clinical data were retrospectively collected from medical records between January 1, 2008, and December 31, 2016, at Asan Medical Center (Korea); archived tumor samples were assessed for PD-L1 expression (combined positive score [CPS] ≥1) and TMB (≥175 mutations/exome). Overall survival (OS) was defined as time from advanced diagnosis or initiation of first-line or second-line systemic therapy until death/last follow-up. The association of OS with PD-L1 expression and TMB were analyzed using the log-rank test and Cox proportional hazards model adjusted for covariates. RESULTS: Of 267 patients, 76.0% had squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), 24.0% had adenocarcinoma (AC)/adenosquamous carcinoma (ASC), 64.4% had PD-L1 CPS ≥1, and 32.6% had TMB ≥175 mutations/exome. PD-L1 CPS ≥1 and TMB ≥175 mutations/exome were more prevalent in SCC than in AC/ASC (73.9% and 37.2% vs. 34.4% and 17.7%). There was no association between OS and PD-L1 expression (CPS ≥1 vs. <1: adjusted hazard ratio [HR]=1.14; 95% confidence interval [CI]=0.84-1.53 from advanced diagnosis); OS trended shorter for the subgroup with TMB ≥175 versus <175 mutations/exome (adjusted HR=1.29; 95% CI=0.95-1.75). CONCLUSION: Retrospective analysis of non-immunotherapy-treated patients with advanced cervical cancer demonstrated a higher prevalence of PD-L1 CPS ≥1 and TMB ≥175 mutations/exome in SCC versus AC/ASC. PD-L1 CPS ≥1 was not associated with OS; TMB ≥175 mutations/exome showed a trend toward shorter OS. Additional studies are needed to confirm these findings.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine maternal and neonatal factors in cesarean deliveries due to dystocia, including cephalopelvic disproportion, latent-phase prolongation, and fetal malposition or malpresentation. Additionally, we sought to compare the differences between the dystocia subgroups. METHOD AND MATERIALS: This retrospective case-control study included women who delivered between January 2010 and June 2021 after 37 weeks of pregnancy and underwent abdominal-pelvic CT scans within 5 years before and after delivery. Neonatal factors were extracted from medical charts immediately after delivery. RESULTS: Among the 292 women studied, those with cesarean deliveries for dystocia were older (mean ± SD, 34.2 ± 4.27 vs. 32.2 ± 3.8, p-value = 0.002), had higher pre-pregnancy BMI (22.7 ± 3.67 vs. 21.4 ± 3.48, p-value = 0.012) and term-BMI (27.4 ± 3.72 vs. 25.9 ± 3.66, p-value = 0.010), shorter interspinous distance (ISD, the distance between ischial spine) (10.8 ± 0.76 vs. 11.2 ± 0.85 cm, p-value = 0.003), and longer head circumference (HC) (35 ± 1.47 vs. 34.4 ± 1.36 cm, p-value = 0.003) compared to those who had vaginal deliveries. Univariate logistic regression for dystocia revealed associations between HC/maternal height and HC/ISD ratios (OR, 2.02 [95% confidence interval, CI, 1.4 ~ 2.92], 12.13 [3.2 ~ 46.04], respectively). Multivariate logistic analysis indicated that maternal age, ISD, and HC were significant factors for dystocia (OR, 1.11 [95% CI, 1.01 ~ 1.21], 0.49 [0.26 ~ 0.91], 1.53 [1.07 ~ 2.19], respectively). The subgroup with latent-phase prolongation exhibited the lowest birthweight/term-BMI ratio (124 ± 18.8 vs. 113 ± 10.3 vs. 134 ± 19.1, p-value = 0.013). CONCLUSION: The HC/ISD ratio emerged as a crucial predictor of dystocia, suggesting that reducing term-BMI could potentially mitigate latent-phase prolongation. Further research assessing the maternal mid-pelvis during pregnancy and labor is warranted, along with efforts to reduce BMI during pregnancy.

The study aimed to investigate the survival rate of patients with dementia according to their level of physical activity and body mass index (BMI). A total of 5,789 patients with dementia were retrieved from the 2009-2015 National Health Insurance Sharing Service databases. Survival analysis was used to calculate the hazard ratio (HR) for physical activity and BMI. The study sample primarily comprised older adults (65-84 years old, 83.81%) and female (n = 3,865, 66.76%). Participants who engaged in physical activity had a lower mortality risk (HR = 0.91, p = 0.02). Compared to the underweight group, patients with dementia who had normal weight (HR = 0.86, p = 0.01), obesity (HR = 0.85, p = 0.03) and more than severe obesity (HR = 0.72, p = 0.02) demonstrated a lower mortality risk. This study emphasizes the significance of avoiding underweight and engaging in physical activity to reducing mortality risk in patients with dementia, highlighting the necessity for effective interventions.

Phasmatodea, commonly known as stick insects, are recognized as noteworthy pests globally, impacting agriculture and forest ecosystems. Among them, the outbreak of Ramulus mikado has emerged as a notable concern in East Asian forests. Recently, Metarhizium phasmatodeae has been identified as utilizing stick insects as hosts. We have observed evidence of this entomopathogenic fungus infecting stick insects. Given the increase in these occurrences during the rainy period, this study investigated the relationship between the survival of R. mikado and the M. phasmatodeae infection during the rainy seasons of 2022 and 2023. We collected stick insects in two representative forests of the Republic of Korea and examined insect survival, fungal infection, and various environmental factors. No infections were detected in specimens collected in June before the rainy season, but from July onwards, both the mortality of R. mikado and the fungal infection substantially increased. By the last sampling date of each year, 75% (2022), 71.4% (2023) of the specimens were infected, and over 90% of the total individuals succumbed as a result. Fungi isolated from deceased R. mikado were successfully identified as M. phasmatodeae using morphological and taxonomic approaches. Various statistical analyses, including principal component analysis and modeling, revealed a robust association between fungal infection and the survival of stick insects. The results highlight the correlation between mass deaths of stick insects and fungal infection, particularly during the summer rainy season. These findings offer valuable insights for forecasting R. mikado population in the upcoming year and developing effective pest control strategies.

The Hippo pathway effectors Yes-associated protein 1 (YAP) and its homolog TAZ are transcriptional coactivators that control gene expression by binding to TEA domain (TEAD) family transcription factors. The YAP/TAZ-TEAD complex is a key regulator of cancer-specific transcriptional programs, which promote tumor progression in diverse types of cancer, including breast cancer. Despite intensive efforts, the YAP/TAZ-TEAD complex in cancer has remained largely undruggable due to an incomplete mechanistic understanding. Here, we report that nuclear phosphoinositides function as cofactors that mediate the binding of YAP/TAZ to TEADs. The enzymatic products of phosphoinositide kinases PIPKIα and IPMK, including phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PI(4,5)P2) and phosphatidylinositol 3,4,5-trisphosphate (P(I3,4,5)P3), bridge the binding of YAP/TAZ to TEAD. Inhibiting these kinases or the association of YAP/TAZ with PI(4,5)P2 and PI(3,4,5)P3 attenuates YAP/TAZ interaction with the TEADs, the expression of YAP/TAZ target genes, and breast cancer cell motility. Although we could not conclusively exclude the possibility that other enzymatic products of IPMK such as inositol phosphates play a role in the mechanism, our results point to a previously unrecognized role of nuclear phosphoinositide signaling in control of YAP/TAZ activity and implicate this pathway as a potential therapeutic target in YAP/TAZ-driven breast cancer.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to examine the potential association between migraine and vascular dementia (VaD) using a nationwide population database. BACKGROUND: Migraine and VaD showed similar structural and functional changes in pathophysiology process and shared common risk factors, However, whether migraine prevalence increases VaD incidence remains controversial. METHODS: This retrospective population-based cohort study used the medical records from the Korean National Health Insurance System database. Migraine (G43) was defined by using the Tenth Revision of the International Classification of Diseases code. More than two migraine diagnoses at least 3 months apart were defined as "chronic migraine". Cox proportional hazards model estimated hazard ratios (HRs) of VaD for group comparisons. RESULTS: We included 212,836 patients with migraine and 5,863,348 individuals without migraine. During 10 years of follow-up, 3,914 (1.8%) and 60,258 (1.0%) patients with and without migraine, respectively, were newly diagnosed with VaD. After adjustment, patients with migraine showed a 1.21-fold higher risk of VaD than those without migraine (HR = 1.21; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.17-1.25). Patients with chronic migraine showed a higher cumulative incidence of VaD than those with episodic migraine. The adjusted HR for the VaD incidence with migraine was higher in: (1) patients aged <65 years; (2) women; (3) patients without hypertension, diabetes, or atrial fibrillation; and (4) non-smokers. CONCLUSION: Migraine is associated with an increased risk of VaD, particularly in chronic migraine patients. Incidence of VaD in the setting of migraine may have distinct pathophysiology from that of VaD with traditional cardiovascular risks.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of Vancomycin Power (VP) and the occurrence of resistant organisms after four-year of routine VP use. METHODS: The study included 1063 patients who underwent posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) and transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) between January 2010 and February 2020. Intrawound VP was applied to all instrumented fusions starting in January 2016. The patients were divided into two groups: those who did not apply VP (non-VP) (n = 605) between 2010 and 2015, and those who did apply VP (VP) (n = 458) between 2016 and 2020. The baseline characteristics, clinical symptoms, infection rate, and causative organisms were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: The rate of PSI was not significantly different between the non-VP group (1.32 %, n = 8) and the VP group (1.09 %, n = 5). Although adjusted by diabetes mellitus, VP still did not show statistical significance (OR = 0.757 (0.245-2.345), p = 0.630). There were no critical complications that were supposed to relation with vancomycin powder. In the 13 cases of PSI, seven pathogens were isolated, with a gram-negative organism identified in the non-VP group. However, the type of organism was not significantly different between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: The use of intrawound VP may not affect the PSI and occurrence of resistant organism and may not cause critical complications. Therefore, clinicians may decide whether to use VP for preventing PSI not worrying about its safety.

This study investigated the impact of Methyl Jasmonate (MeJA) application on the nutritional content and yield of five different colored radish microgreens. Microgreens were produced without substrate and subjected to 0.5 mM and 1.0 mM MeJA treatments on the 7th day, three days before harvest. The parameters measured included yield, dry matter, minerals, amino acids, secondary metabolites such as chlorophylls (Chls), anthocyanins, flavonoids, phenolics, glucosinolates (GSLs), vitamin C, and antioxidant capacity. MeJA at 1.0 mM generally improved yield and dry weight across cultivars, and all microgreens exhibited rich mineral and amino acid composition, with the influence of cultivar being more significant than MeJA treatment. However, MeJA enhanced all cultivars' anthocyanins, GSLs, phenolics, flavonoids, and antioxidant activities. Generally, as the antioxidant capacity is the primary factor influencing the nutritional quality of microgreens, MeJA-treated microgreens, especially with selected superior cultivars such as 'Asia purple' and 'Koregon red', could offer a potential for cultivation of value-added, eco-friendly microgreens with substrate-free cultivation.

BACKGROUND: To compare the biomechanical stability of a novel, C-shaped nickel-titanium shape memory alloy (SMA) implant (C-clip) with traditional cerclage wiring in the fixation of a Vancouver B1 (VB1) periprosthetic femoral fracture (PFF). METHODS: In total, 18 synthetic femoral fracture models were constructed to obtain unstable VB1 fracture with an oblique fracture line 8 cm below the lesser trochanter. For each model, the distal portion was repaired using a 10-hole locking plate and four distal bi-cortical screws. The proximal portion was repaired using either three, threaded cerclage wirings or three, novel C-shaped implants. Specimens underwent biomechanical testing using axial compression, torsional and four-point bending tests. Each test was performed on three specimens. RESULTS: The C-clip was statistically significantly stronger (i.e., stiffer) than cerclage wiring in the three biomechanical tests. For axial compression, medians (ranges) were 39 (39-41) and 35 (35-35) N/mm, for the C-clip and cerclage wiring, respectively. For torsion, medians (ranges) were, 0.44 (0.44-0.45) and 0.30 (0.30-0.33) N/mm for the C-clip and cerclage wiring, respectively. For the four-point bending test, medians (ranges) were 39 (39-41) and 28 (28-31) N/mm; for the C-clip and cerclage wiring, respectively. CONCLUSION: Results from this small study show that the novel, C-shaped SMA appears to be biomechanically superior to traditional cerclage wiring in terms of stiffness, axial compression, torsion and four-point bending, and may be a valuable alternative in the repair of VB1 PFF. Further research is necessary to support these results.

BACKGROUND: Non-communicating rudimentary horn pregnancy (NCRHP) lead to life-threatening condition for both mother and fetus. Early diagnosis of NCRHP and laparoscopic resection is important to prevent catastrophic conditions. However, delayed diagnosis until the second or third trimester makes it difficult to accurately diagnose between NCRHP and bicornuate uterine pregnancy, as both conditions present uterine rupture and massive hemoperitoneum. Furthermore, these rare cases are challenging in pregnancy trials and associated with adverse outcomes in subsequent pregnancies. CASE PRESENTATION: A 31-year-old gravida 1 para 0 Korean woman visited our infertility center with a confirmed positive urine pregnancy test after timed intercourse. Before she was scheduled to have timed intercourse, a unicornuate uterus with a non-communicating right uterine horn was suspected based on an ultrasound scan and hysterosalpingography during the initial infertility workup. A gestational sac was observed in the right non-communicating rudimentary horn at 5 weeks of gestation. Serum beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (b-hCG) level was 2052.0mIU/mL. An elective laparoscopic resection of the right rudimentary horn containing a gestational sac, along with ipsilateral salpingectomy, was performed with no adverse event. After 3-month of recovery period and three cycles of conceptional trials involving timed intercourse and intrauterine insemination, in-vitro fertilization (IVF) was performed using the antagonist protocol, and successful pregnancy was confirmed. The patient had been hospitalized from 21 + 6 weeks to 35 + 6 weeks of gestation, underwent cerclage placement and tocolytics with corticosteroid treatment. She delivered an early-term male baby by cesarean section. CONCLUSION: In this rare case, the successful pregnancy achieved through IVF following the appropriate management of NCRHP under laparoscopy underscores the critical importance of early diagnosis and intervention in cases of NCRHP. Timely identification and management of NCRHP are vital to prevent the occurrence of catastrophic conditions and to enhance the prognosis of a successful pregnancy through assisted reproductive technology (ART). Therefore, a high index of suspicion for NCRHP is important and employs a range of diagnostic modalities.

This paper introduces an approach to the automated measurement and analysis of dairy cows using 3D point cloud technology. The integration of advanced sensing techniques enables the collection of non-intrusive, precise data, facilitating comprehensive monitoring of key parameters related to the health, well-being, and productivity of dairy cows. The proposed system employs 3D imaging sensors to capture detailed information about various parts of dairy cows, generating accurate, high-resolution point clouds. A robust automated algorithm has been developed to process these point clouds and extract relevant metrics such as dairy cow stature height, rump width, rump angle, and front teat length. Based on the measured data combined with expert assessments of dairy cows, the quality indices of dairy cows are automatically evaluated and extracted. By leveraging this technology, dairy farmers can gain real-time insights into the health status of individual cows and the overall herd. Additionally, the automated analysis facilitates efficient management practices and optimizes feeding strategies and resource allocation. The results of field trials and validation studies demonstrate the effectiveness and reliability of the automated 3D point cloud approach in dairy farm environments. The errors between manually measured values of dairy cow height, rump angle, and front teat length, and those calculated by the auto-measurement algorithm were within 0.7 cm, with no observed exceedance of errors in comparison to manual measurements. This research contributes to the burgeoning field of precision livestock farming, offering a technological solution that not only enhances productivity but also aligns with contemporary standards for sustainable and ethical animal husbandry practices.

The Korean Society of Gynecologic Oncology (KSGO) had been making an effort to standardize and enhance the quality of domestic uterine corpus cancer treatment by developing updated clinical practice guidelines in 2021. The KSGO revised the guidelines based on a literature search using 4 key elements: Population, Intervention, Comparison, and Outcome framework. These elements include the evaluation of the efficacy and safety of immune checkpoint inhibitor treatment in recurrent/advanced endometrial cancer patients who have failed platinum-based chemotherapy, as well as the effect of combined treatment with trastuzumab in patients with HER2/neu-positive endometrial cancer. Additionally, the guideline assessed the efficacy and safety of omitting lymph node dissection in low-risk endometrial cancer patients, investigated the effect of sentinel lymph node mapping in early-stage endometrial cancer surgery, addressed the outcome of chemoradiation therapy as a postoperative treatment in patients with advanced (stage III-IVA) endometrial cancer, and explored the impact of initial treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors on survival in patients with advanced or recurrent endometrial cancer patients.

The rapid evolution of 3D technology in recent years has brought about significant change in the field of agriculture, including precision livestock management. From 3D geometry information, the weight and characteristics of body parts of Korean cattle can be analyzed to improve cow growth. In this paper, a system of cameras is built to synchronously capture 3D data and then reconstruct a 3D mesh representation. In general, to reconstruct non-rigid objects, a system of cameras is synchronized and calibrated, and then the data of each camera are transformed to global coordinates. However, when reconstructing cattle in a real environment, difficulties including fences and the vibration of cameras can lead to the failure of the process of reconstruction. A new scheme is proposed that automatically removes environmental fences and noise. An optimization method is proposed that interweaves camera pose updates, and the distances between the camera pose and the initial camera position are added as part of the objective function. The difference between the camera's point clouds to the mesh output is reduced from 7.5 mm to 5.5 mm. The experimental results showed that our scheme can automatically generate a high-quality mesh in a real environment. This scheme provides data that can be used for other research on Korean cattle.

OBJECTIVES: Clinical studies have suggested an association between migraine and the occurrence of Parkinson's disease (PD). However, it is unknown whether migraine affects PD risk. We aimed to investigate the incidence of PD in patients with migraine and to determine the risk factors affecting the association between migraine and PD incidence. METHODS: Using the Korean National Health Insurance System database (2002-2019), we enrolled all Koreans aged ≥40 years who participated in the national health screening program in 2009. International Classification of Diseases (10th revision) diagnostic codes and Rare Incurable Diseases System diagnostic codes were used to define patients with migraine (within 12 months of enrollment) and newly diagnosed PD. RESULTS: We included 214,193 patients with migraine and 5,879,711 individuals without migraine. During 9.1 years of follow-up (55,435,626 person-years), 1,973 (0.92%) and 30,664 (0.52%) individuals with and without migraine, respectively, were newly diagnosed with PD. Following covariate adjustment, patients with migraine showed a 1.35-fold higher PD risk than individuals without migraine. The incidence of PD was not significantly different between patients with migraine with aura and those without aura. In males with migraine, underlying dyslipidemia increased the risk of PD (p=0.012). In contrast, among females with migraine, younger age (<65 years) increased the risk of PD (p=0.038). CONCLUSIONS: Patients with migraine were more likely to develop PD than individuals without migraine. Preventive management of underlying comorbidities and chronic migraine may affect the incidence of PD in these patients. Future prospective randomized clinical trials are warranted to clarify this association.
