RESUMEN

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) are caused by prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE). They cause epigenetic changes, permanent neurodevelopmental deficits, and anomalies in growth and facial structure. This article enforces the need for health and social care professionals to have a greater understanding and awareness of how FAS and FASD may impact on the individual, the family and the community, to enable them to provide the most effective preventive and supportive care possible.

BACKGROUND: The 'Hello my name is …' campaign emphasises the importance of compassionate care and focuses on health professionals introducing themselves to patients. Research has found that using names is key to providing individuals with a sense of belonging and can be vital in ensuring patient safety. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the student experience of having 'Hello my name is …' printed on student uniforms and implement this campaign in practice. DESIGN: A case study was used to capture the experiences of 40 multiprofessional healthcare students in practice. Participants were asked to complete a reflective diary during their first week in practice and attend a focus group with 4-8 other students. SETTING: A higher education institution in the north east of England with students from adult, child and learning disability nursing, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and midwifery programmes, in a variety of clinical placements throughout the region. FINDINGS: The implementation of the campaign and logo branding on the uniforms of students resulted in an increase in the number of times students were addressed by their name in practice. Participants reported that the study helped them to quickly develop a sense of belonging when on placement, and aided them in delivering compassionate care. Occasions when patient safety was improved were also reported. CONCLUSION: The use of names is a key feature in human relationships and the delivery of compassionate care, and the authors advocate use of the 'Hello my name is …' campaign for all health professionals.

BACKGROUND: The one-to-one style of mentorship of pre-registration nursing students has been identified across the globe as not always fulfilling the requirements of the profession or the individual. In recent years, there has been a move toward a coaching-based style of student supervision. This shift in supervision is welcomed by regulatory bodies and is supported in the UK by the NMC (2018). METHODOLOGY: A structured state-of-the-art review was used to assess the impact of a coaching-based style of student supervision on staff and students' experiences of clinical placements. 14 papers, published between 2007 and 2020 were reviewed, and data was extracted using thematic analysis. FINDINGS: Three themes were established; a, the relationship between students and registered staff in clinical practice, b, student autonomy and c, change management. CONCLUSION: The use of a coaching style of student supervision is widely beneficial to nursing culture. The enhanced quality of the working relationship between staff and students serves to create more autonomous, critical, and skilled staff nurses in the future.

RESUMEN

This article provides a brief overview of adolescence. It highlights the key physical changes related to puberty and identifies the latest understanding of neurological development in young people. It is also recognised, within the article, that this period of rapid change can have an impact on social and emotional wellbeing. There are conditions that typically have an onset during adolescence, examples of this are offered. The term 'adolescence' is used to describe the stage of development and growth and 'young people' is used throughout to refer to the individuals.

RESUMEN

The incidence of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) in young people is increasing. Causes of BDD are related to the prevalence of social media and adolescent development, especially the role that brain neuroplasticity has on influencing perception. There are long-term impacts of BDD, including depression and suicide. Prevention and promotion of positive body image are part of the nurse's role; treatment can prevent unnecessary aesthetic surgical interventions.

RESUMEN

The majority of cardiorespiratory arrests in children and infants are caused by respiratory insufficiency rather than cardiac problems; therefore, the order of delivering resuscitation is different to the delivery of basic life support to adults. The Nursing and Midwifery Council has stated that all nurses must be able to provide basic life support. This article will explain the process for recognising the need for, and delivering, basic life support to infants and children.
