As a biocontrol bacteria, Brevibacillus has been the subject of extensive research for agricultural applications. Antibacterial peptides (AMPs) are the main antibacterial products of Brevibacillus. This study isolated a strain of Br. brevis HNCS-1 from tea garden soil, and the strain has an antagonistic effect against five types of pathogens of tea diseases, namely Gloeosporium theae-sinensis, Elsinoe leucospira, Phyllosticta theaefolia, Fusarium sp., and Cercospora theae. To determine the genetic characteristics implicated in the biocontrol mechanism, the genome sequence of the HNCS-1 strain was obtained and analyzed further, and the data are deposited in the GenBank repository (No. CP128411). Comparative genomics analyses revealed that the HNCS-1 strain and 17 public Br. brevis share a core genome composed of 3,742 genes. Interestingly, only one non-ribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS) gene cluster annotated as edeine is present in the core genome. And UHPLC-MS/MS detection results showd that edeine B and edeine A were the principal antibacterial peptides in the HNCS-1 strain. This study proves that edeine is the main antibacterial peptide of Br. brevis, and provides a new strategy for the identification of antibacterial products from other biocontrol bacteria.

Huangjin green tea (HJC) is one of the most famous regional green teas in China, and has gained attention for its unique flavor. Research on HJC has focused mainly on the synthesis of L-theanine, with fewer studies concentrating on sensory characteristics. In this study, molecular sensory science techniques, including color analysis, gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry, and E-tongue, were used to characterize the sensory properties of HJC, with Fuding Dabai and Anji Baicha teas used as conventional and high amino acid controls, respectively. The sensory characteristics and main quality components of HJC lie somewhere between these two other teas, and somewhat closer to the conventional control. They were difficult to distinguish by color, but significant differences exist in terms of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), E-tongue values on bitterness and astringency, and their contents of major taste components. VOCs such as (E)-2-octenal, linalool, ethyl acrylate, ethyl acetate, and 2-methyl-3-furanethiol were found to be the main differential components that contributed to aroma, significantly influencing the tender chestnut aroma of HJC. Free amino acids, tea polyphenols, and ester catechins were the main differential components responsible for taste, and its harmonious phenol-to-ammonia ratio was found to affect the fresh, mellow, heavy, and brisk taste of HJC.

Electroantennogram responses to a wide range of plant volatile compounds that have been identified in tea plants Camellia sinensis L. (Ericales: Theaceae) were recorded from males and females of the tea slug moth, Iragoides fasciata Moore (Lepidoptera: Limacodidae). The responses to 26 compounds, belonging to several chemical classes, and two mixtures were evaluated. The results showed significantly different electroantennogram responses to the different chemicals, as well as significantly different responses according to gender. The green leaf volatile components elicited significantly greater responses in males. In general, the antennae of males were more sensitive, and responded more strongly, to most of the compounds. Responses to sesquiterpenoids were lower in both males and females. Dose-dependent response studies indicated differences in response between genders and concentrations, suggesting the existence of sexual dimorphism. Compounds belonging to the green leaf volatiles class appeared to be important clues in host-plant selection by this oligophagous species.
