RESUMEN

Given the disproportionate representation in HIV/AIDS cases among young Black members of the LGBTQIA community, it is important to continue to identify both their ability to assess the knowledge that can foster healthier sexual outcomes as well as dynamics that may foster or undermine their efforts. The goal of this study is to examine whether 236 young Black persons ages 18-30 years old who are members of the LGBTQIA community know where to go locally to locate healthcare services to combat HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted health issues. Quantitative findings show the influence of self-identified sexual identity, age, and place of residence on knowledge about HIV-related services. The implications of these results illustrate the possible effects of place and identity development on knowledge about HIV-related services that can affect life chances and quality of life for certain members of this community.

RESUMEN

Young Black Men Who Have Sex With Men (BMSM) have been the subject of much research focused on health disparities in HIV occurrence, stigma, and mental health. Although such research is important, fewer studies focus on other equally salient areas of their lives such as spirituality, religious practices, and social support. Informed by literature on social support, this research endeavors to better understand these dynamics for a group of young BMSM who reside in a metropolitan city in Tennessee. Focus group results and content analysis uncover themes related to religion and resilience; queering Christianity; and virtual spirituality. Participants expressed an overarching need for support, safe spaces, genuine relationships, and godly instruction, conveyed through traditional Black Church involvement and nontraditional Internet usage. Findings are important for strategic, proactive, cross-generational collaboration with young BMSM to holistically meet their varied needs.

In this article, we demonstrate the use of bio-conjugated 2D graphene oxide (bio-GO) nanostructure to probe breast cancer cell (SKBR3) with excellent discrimination over other types of circulating tumor cells. We distinctly observed that bio-GO nanostructure targets and bind SKBR3 cell selectively in the cell mixture. Longer incubation of SKBR3 cell with bio-GO causes Raman signal "turn off" when excited with 532 nm laser. This is attributed to penetration of the bio-GO through the plasma membrane of the cell by generating transient hole. Extraction of GO after cell digestion also support the internalization rubric of 2D graphene through cell membrane. Our experimental data with the HaCaT healthy cell line, as well as with LNCaP prostate cancer cell line clearly demonstrated that this Raman scattering assay is highly selective to SKBR3. The mechanism of selectivity and the assay's response change have been verified and discussed utilizing fluorescence properties of GO and various other techniques. The experimental results open up a possibility of new label free Raman scattering assay, for reliable diagnosis of cancer cell lines by monitoring "turn-off" of the Raman signal from Bio-GO nanostructure.

Alizarin functionalized on plasmonic gold nanoparticle displays strong surface enhanced Raman scattering from the various Raman modes of Alizarin, which can be exploited in multiple ways for heavy metal sensing purposes. The present article reports a surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) probe for trace level Cadmium in water samples. Alizarin, a highly Raman active dye was functionalized on plasmonic gold surface as a Raman reporter, and then 3-mercaptopropionic acid, 2,6-Pyridinedicarboxylic acid at pH 8.5 was immobilized on the surface of the nanoparticle for the selective coordination of the Cd (II). Upon addition of Cadmium, gold nanoparticle provide an excellent hotspot for Alizarin dye and Raman signal enhancement. This plasmonic SERS assay provided an excellent sensitivity for Cadmium detection from the drinking water samples. We achieved as low as 10 ppt sensitivity from various drinking water sources against other Alkali and heavy metal ions. The developed SERS probe is quite simple and rapid with excellent repeatability and has great potential for prototype scale up for field application.

When the subject of the Black Church and homosexuality is broached, research often focuses on homophobia and correlates with HIV/AIDS. Fewer studies examine other problematic issues germane to gay and lesbian involvement in Black congregations. In this analysis, Black clergy dialogue during focus groups about inclusivity and church leadership by gays and lesbians. Informed by Cultural Theory, of equal interest is whether discourses are influenced by Black Church cultural tools, as well as cultural dynamics, from the broader Black community. As anticipated, findings suggest the tendency for clergy to promote welcoming church spaces, but to be reticent about affirming homosexuality as an acceptable lifestyle. Furthermore, although clergy are generally supportive of involvement by closeted gays and lesbians as lay leaders, most do not support their involvement in the clergy, particularly as pastors. However, views vary based on denomination and gender, and are informed by Black Church cultural components such as scripture and the call-and-response tradition.

RESUMEN

This article reviews the patents that have been presented over the past two decades related to alternative functional use of the Sweet potato, Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam. The major categories of available patents include alternative food products such as Sweet potato chips and fries, Sweet potato ornamental products, and fuel ethanol production from Sweet potato. The majority of recent patents fall under the category of ornamental products and alternative food products, with only a few fuel ethanol products. Figure 1 shows the major categories of patented alternative products from Sweet potato.

Biofouling of in vivo glucose sensors has been indicated as the primary reason for sensitivity losses observed during the first 24 h after implant [Wisniewski N, Moussy F, Reichert WM. Characterization of implantable biosensor membrane biofouling. Fresen J Anal Chem 2000; 366(6-7): 611-621]. Identification of the biomolecules that contribute to these sensitivity perturbations is the primary objective of the research presented. Active needle-type glucose sensors were implanted in Sprague-Dawley rats for 24h, and then a proteomics approach was used to identify the substances absorbed to the sensors. MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry was the primary tool utilized to identify the biomolecules in sensor leachate samples and species absorbed directly on sensor membranes excised from explanted in vivo sensors. Not surprisingly serum albumin was identified as the primary biomolecule present, however, predominantly as endogenous fragments of the protein. In addition, several other biomolecule fragments, mainly less than 15 kD, were identified. Based on these findings, it is concluded that fragments of larger biomolecules infiltrate the sensor membranes causing diminished glucose diffusivity, thus decreasing in vivo sensitivity.
