RESUMEN

Macrobenthic organisms are useful bioindicators to assess ecological quality status. On the south-central coast of Peru (13°15.15'S, 76°18.5'W), a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) marine terminal has been operating since 2010. We investigated the macrobenthic communities and sediment parameters from 2011 to 2020 to evaluate the ecological quality status in the surrounding area of the marine terminal, using the AZTI Marine Biotic Index (AMBI) and its multivariate version (M-AMBI). We analyzed the diversity and community composition of macrobenthic invertebrates and the physico-chemical parameters of the sediment from 29 sampling sites, ranging from 0 to 15m depth. The sampling design considered: the direct influence zone ("DIZ", surroundings of the marine terminal), and northern (NCZ) and southern (SCZ) control zones. Our results indicated that abundance was high at SCZ and decreased with depth. Species richness and diversity were high at DIZ and NCZ, respectively, and increased up to 10m but dropped at 15m. High sand content was recorded in shallow depths, while in deeper areas and DIZ, mud and organic matter increased and redox potential was negative. AMBI indicated a "slightly disturbed" status in general, while M-AMBI indicated "good" or "moderate" status at depths ≤ 12m, and "poor" status at 15m. Overall, the season/year factor was not important, and variables were mostly significantly different across depths. Redox potential and organic matter were correlated with M-AMBI at 15m. In general, our results indicate an acceptable ecological quality surrounding the marine terminal, likely because the study area is not influenced by an important input of an anthropogenic stressor. This study highlights the importance of monitoring benthic communities in the surroundings of human-made structures and the use of ecological quality indices for understanding potential impacts.

Developing-world shark fisheries are typically not assessed or actively managed for sustainability; one fundamental obstacle is the lack of species and size-composition catch data. We tested and implemented a new and potentially widely applicable approach for collecting these data: mandatory submission of low-value secondary fins (anal fins) from landed sharks by fishers and use of the fins to reconstruct catch species and size. Visual and low-cost genetic identification were used to determine species composition, and linear regression was applied to total length and anal fin base length for catch-size reconstruction. We tested the feasibility of this approach in Belize, first in a local proof-of-concept study and then scaling it up to the national level for the 2017-2018 shark-fishing season (1,786 fins analyzed). Sixteen species occurred in this fishery. The most common were the Caribbean reef (Carcharhinus perezi), blacktip (C. limbatus), sharpnose (Atlantic [Rhizoprionodon terraenovae] and Caribbean [R. porosus] considered as a group), and bonnethead (Sphyrna cf. tiburo). Sharpnose and bonnethead sharks were landed primarily above size at maturity, whereas Caribbean reef and blacktip sharks were primarily landed below size at maturity. Our approach proved effective in obtaining critical data for managing the shark fishery, and we suggest the tools developed as part of this program could be exported to other nations in this region and applied almost immediately if there were means to communicate with fishers and incentivize them to provide anal fins. Outside the tropical Western Atlantic, we recommend further investigation of the feasibility of sampling of secondary fins, including considerations of time, effort, and cost of species identification from these fins, what secondary fin type to use, and the means with which to communicate with fishers and incentivize participation. This program could be a model for collecting urgently needed data for developing-world shark fisheries globally. Uso de Aletas Secundarias Proporcionadas por Pescadores para Llenar Vacíos Importantes de Información sobre las Pesquerías de Tiburones Resumen Con frecuencia no se evalúan las pesquerías de tiburones del mundo en desarrollo ni cuentan con un manejo activo de sustentabilidad. Uno de los principales obstáculos para esto es la falta de información sobre las especies y la composición de los tamaños en las capturas. Probamos e implementamos una estrategia nueva y potencialmente aplicable en todas partes para la recolección de estos datos: la entrega obligatoria de las aletas secundarias de bajo valor económico (aletas anales) obtenidas de los tiburones desembarcados por parte de los pescadores y el uso de estas aletas para reconstruir las especies y tamaños en la captura. Usamos identificaciones genéticas de bajo costo e identificaciones visuales para determinar la composición de las especies y aplicamos una regresión lineal a la longitud total y a la de la base de la aleta anal para la reconstrucción del tamaño en captura. Probamos la viabilidad de esta estrategia en Belice, primero en un estudio de prueba de concepto y después subiendo al nivel nacional para la temporada de pesca de tiburón 2017-2018 (1,786 aletas analizadas). Se registraron 16 especies en esta pesquería. Las más comunes fueron Carcharhinus perezi, C. limbatus, Rhizoprionodon terraenovae y R. porosus (consideradas como un grupo) y Sphyrna cf. tiburo. Las últimas tres especies fueron desembarcadas principalmente por encima del tamaño maduro, mientras que con las dos primeras especies lo hacían por debajo del tamaño maduro. Nuestra estrategia demostró ser efectiva en la obtención de información crítica para el manejo de la pesquería de tiburones y sugerimos que las herramientas desarrolladas como parte de este programa puedan ser exportadas a otras naciones en esta región y aplicadas casi de manera inmediata si existen los medios para comunicarse con los pescadores e incentivarlos a proporcionar las aletas anales. Many organs have internal structures with spatially differentiated and sometimes temporally synchronized groups of cells. The mechanisms leading to such differentiation and coordination are not well understood. Here we design a diffusion-limited microfluidic system to mimic a multicellular organ structure with peripheral blood flow and test whether a group of individually oscillating yeast cells could form subpopulations of spatially differentiated and temporally synchronized cells. Upon substrate addition, the dynamic response at single-cell level shows glycolytic oscillations, leading to wave fronts traveling through the monolayered population and to synchronized communities at well-defined positions in the cell chamber. A detailed mechanistic model with the architectural structure of the flow chamber incorporated successfully predicts the spatial-temporal experimental data, and allows for a molecular understanding of the observed phenomena. The intricate interplay of intracellular biochemical reaction networks leading to the oscillations, combined with intercellular communication via metabolic intermediates and fluid dynamics of the reaction chamber, is responsible for the generation of the subpopulations of synchronized cells. This mechanism, as analyzed from the model simulations, is experimentally tested using different concentrations of cyanide stress solutions. The results are reproducible and stable, despite cellular heterogeneity, and the spontaneous community development is reminiscent of a zoned cell differentiation often observed in multicellular organs.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) has been globally recognized as a major public health problem. A growing body of evidence has identified a significant relationship between living in a neighborhood of concentrated disadvantage and experiencing IPV. Considering the increasing rates of poverty and segregation registered in Latin American cities, research on the effects of segregation on IPV seems to be particularly necessary in the region. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the impact of economic residential segregation on physical IPV, exploring the mediating roles of social capital and gender norms unfavorable to women. This study used an original dataset in which women from five districts of Metropolitan Lima were interviewed. The results show that residential segregation indirectly influences on physical IPV through the considered mechanisms. In this regard, it was found that segregation increases the likelihood of prevailing gender norms unfavorable to women, and this in turn increases the likelihood of IPV. At the same time, segregation fosters the development of greater social ties among the neighbors, which in turn diminish the levels of IPV. Regarding the overall effect of segregation through both mechanisms, on average social capital is a factor of more relevance. The findings suggest that strengthening the informal networks among neighbors is a powerful strategy to reduce physical IPV in contexts of poverty and segregation.

The response of oscillatory systems to external perturbations is crucial for emergent properties such as synchronisation and phase locking and can be quantified in a phase response curve (PRC). In individual, oscillating yeast cells, we characterised experimentally the phase response of glycolytic oscillations for external acetaldehyde pulses and followed the transduction of the perturbation through the system. Subsequently, we analysed the control of the relevant system components in a detailed mechanistic model. The observed responses are interpreted in terms of the functional coupling and regulation in the reaction network. We find that our model quantitatively predicts the phase-dependent phase shift observed in the experimental data. The phase shift is in agreement with an adaptation leading to synchronisation with an external signal. Our model analysis establishes that phosphofructokinase plays a key role in the phase shift dynamics as shown in the PRC and adaptation time to external perturbations. Specific mechanism-based interventions, made possible through such analyses of detailed models, can improve upon standard trial and error methods, e.g. melatonin supplementation to overcome jet-lag, which are error-prone, specifically, since the effects are phase dependent and dose dependent. RESUMEN

A wealth of studies has indicated that greater cognitive ability is related to healthier behaviors and outcomes throughout the lifespan. In the present paper, we focus on objective numeracy (ability with numbers) and present findings from a study conducted in the Peruvian Highlands that examines the relations among formal education, numeracy, other more general cognitive skills, and a sex-related protective behavior (condom use). Our results show a potential unique protective effect of numeracy on this healthprotective behavior even after accounting for measures of fluid intelligence and potential confounding factors. These results add to a growing literature highlighting the robust protective effect on health behaviors of greater cognitive skills that are enhanced through schooling. Challenges for future research will be identifying the causal mechanisms that underlie these effects and translating this knowledge into effective interventions for improving health.
