RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: To evaluate skeletal and nasal volume changes before and after surgery in surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion (SARPE) without pterygomaxillary separation and compare the dental changes by digital model analysis and radiographic analysis. SETTING AND SAMPLE: Population A total of 18 patients (10 females and 8 males) aged 15-33 years and with completed skeletal development, who were referred to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department, Dentistry Faculty, Istanbul University and who had SARPE indication were included in the study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Skeletal changes, lower nasal volume, transverse diameters of bony nasolacrimal duct and dental changes have been evaluated by using Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) before and 6 months after the surgery. CBCT data was determined by Mimics v.18.01. Dental changes have been also evaluated by digital model analysis program 'Shape Orthoanalyzer' and the data are compared with those obtained using CBCT. RESULTS: The results obtained from dental measurements made using CBCT and those obtained using scanning three-dimensional (3D) models were consistent with each other. CBCT demonstrated that lower anterior nasal volume and transverse diameters of bony nasolacrimal duct showed statistically significant increase before and after the surgery. CONCLUSIONS: According to the study findings, SARPE without pterygomaxillary separation was noted to be an effective procedure. Lower nasal volumes were increased and the maxilla expanded in the transverse direction in all patients. Dental evaluations that were performed in this digital model analysis also supported our findings in CBCT. Transverse diameters of the bony nasolacrimal duct were shortened at all patients.

AIMS: The objective of this study is to develop kinetic models based on batch experiments describing the growth, CO(2) consumption, and H(2) production of Anabaena variabilis ATCC 29413-U(TM) as functions of irradiance and CO(2) concentration. METHODS AND RESULTS: A parametric experimental study is performed for irradiances from 1120 to 16100 lux and for initial CO(2) mole fractions from 0.03 to 0.20 in argon at pH 7.0 +/- 0.4 with nitrate in the medium. Kinetic models are successfully developed based on the Monod model and on a novel scaling analysis employing the CO(2) consumption half-time as the time scale. CONCLUSIONS: Monod models predict the growth, CO(2) consumption and O(2) production within 30%. Moreover, the CO(2) consumption half-time is an appropriate time scale for analysing all experimental data. In addition, the optimum initial CO(2) mole fraction is 0.05 for maximum growth and CO(2) consumption rates. Finally, the saturation irradiance is determined to be 5170 lux for CO(2) consumption and growth whereas, the maximum H(2) production rate occurs around 10,000 lux. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The study presents kinetic models predicting the growth, CO(2) consumption and H(2) production of A. variabilis. The experimental and scaling analysis methods can be generalized to other micro-organisms.

Hypericum species have been used as herbal remedies for the therapy of various diseases since ancient times. It has been reported that Hypericum perforatum is a useful herbal remedy for the treatment of neurological disorders such as coxalgia, menopausal neurosis, headache, hydrophobia, hypersensitivity, mental aliments, neuralgia, paralysis, spastic paralysis, spinal convulsion, spinal irritation, stiff neck, tetanus, etc. On the basis of recent clinical studies, the extracts prepared from H. perforatum have been found to be effective for the treatment of mild and moderate depressions with no special side effects. In the present study, the effects of H. perforatum and H. calycinum on the central nervous system were investigated using various behavioural models including swimming time, locomotor activity, tail-flick and hole-board experiments. According to the results obtained, it was found that the extracts prepared from Hypericum perforatum and Hypericum calycinum are as effective as antidepressant drugs, desipramine and trimipramine, which were used for the comparison of their effects with these two plant extracts in animal models. The findings obtained also suggested that the antidepressant effect of Hypericum calycinum may be as potent as that of Hypericum perforatum and may be used for therapeutic purposes in depression.
