RESUMEN

Diamond's nitrogen vacancy (NV) center is an optically active defect with long spin coherence times, showing great potential for both efficient nanoscale magnetometry and quantum information processing schemes. Recently, both the formation of buried 3D optical waveguides and high-quality single NVs in diamond were demonstrated using the versatile femtosecond laser-writing technique. However, until now, combining these technologies has been an outstanding challenge. In this Letter, we fabricate laser-written photonic waveguides in quantum grade diamond which are aligned to within micron resolution to single laser-written NVs, enabling an integrated platform providing deterministically positioned waveguide-coupled NVs. This fabrication technology opens the way toward on-chip optical routing of single photons between NVs and optically integrated spin-based sensing.

RESUMEN

Femtosecond laser writing is applied to form Bragg grating waveguides in the diamond bulk. Type II waveguides are integrated with a single pulse point-by-point periodic laser modification positioned toward the edge of the waveguide core. These photonic devices, operating in the telecommunications band, allow for simultaneous optical waveguiding and narrowband reflection from a fourth-order grating. This fabrication technology opens the way toward advanced 3D photonic networks in diamond for a range of applications.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: DWI by using higher b-values provides tissue diffusivity with less T2 shinethrough effect. VCD in the abscess cavity correlates with ADC values. The purpose of this study was to investigate which b-value-derived ADC correlates better with VCD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty patients with brain abscess underwent conventional MR imaging and DWI with b = 1000, 2000, and 3000 s/mm(2) on a 3T MR imaging scanner. ADC values were quantified by placing regions of interest inside the abscess cavity in all sections where the lesion was apparent on coregistered ADC maps derived from different b-values. VCD was measured on pus aspirated. RESULTS: An increase in b-value was associated with a decrease in ADC values in normal parenchyma as well as in the abscess cavity. The most significant negative correlation of VCD was observed with b = 3000 s/mm(2) (r = -0.98, P = .01). CONCLUSIONS: VCD in the abscess cavity can be best assessed at b = 3000 s/mm(2) secondary to the reduction in the T2 shinethrough effect. DWI with b = 3000 s/mm(2) is of promising value in the assessment of the therapeutic response of brain abscess.

RESUMEN

An experiment (E166) at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center has demonstrated a scheme in which a multi-GeV electron beam passed through a helical undulator to generate multi-MeV, circularly polarized photons which were then converted in a thin target to produce positrons (and electrons) with longitudinal polarization above 80% at 6 MeV. The results are in agreement with GEANT4 simulations that include the dominant polarization-dependent interactions of electrons, positrons, and photons in matter.

RESUMEN

The aim of this case series is to evaluate the pattern of breast lumps in males and females with special reference to spectrum of lesions in females below 40 years of age. A 20 years retrospective study was undertaken from the records of the department of Pathology, Bhopal. The lesions were classified into benign and malignant. In young females histological pattern was analyzed in various age groups. A total of 1824 cases were studied. 1724 (94.5%) cases were seen in females and 100 (5.5%) in males. There were 1276 (74%) females below 40 years of age and 448 (26%) were above 40 years of age. In young females 1136 (89%) lesions were benign and 140 (11%) were malignant lumps. Fibrocystic disease in 60 (49%) cases constituted the largest group of benign lumps followed by 30 (24.5%) cases of inflammatory lesion in older females. The mean age of malignant tumors was 34.1 in young females and 51.4 in females above 40. Infiltrating duct carcinoma constituted 83.5% of malignant tumors in young females and 86.1% in older females.

RESUMEN

Choristoma is defined as a histologically normal tissue proliferation or nodule of a tissue type not normally found in anatomic site of proliferation. Here a case of chronic tonsillitis is being reported where mature cartilage was found embedded in the tonsil, making the surgical removal of the tonsil difficult. Cartilaginous choristoma of the tonsil appears to be a developmental anomaly in the second pharyngeal arch and could be one of the causes of recurrent tonsillitis.

RESUMEN

A pH-induced differential derivative spectrophotometric procedure has been developed for the simultaneous determination of Phenobarbitone (PBT) and Phenytoin sodium (DPH Na) in tablet preparations. The method comprized of measurement of difference absorptivities derivatized in second order (DeltaD(2)) of a tablet extract in 0.01 N NaOH relative to that of an equimolar solution in 0.01 N HCl at wavelengths of 244.8 and 252.8 nm respectively. The presence of identical zero-crossing points for pure drug and tablet extract solutions established the non-interference of the excipients in the absorption at these wavelengths. The compliance of Beer's law was adhered over a concentration range of 7.5-25 mug ml(-1) for both PBT and DPH.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Functional sternomastoid myoplasty is a surgical procedure for the correction of congenital torticollis. It allows increment in muscle length without disrupting its bony attachments, hence preserving its function. The technique and rationale of the procedure are discussed. CONCLUSIONS: Observations in six patients indicate that the best functional and cosmetic results can be realized when surgery is performed during childhood.

RESUMEN

Sixteen strains of cultivable mycobacteria were grown in Sauton's medium, and Mycobacterium leprae was purified from armadillo liver. Cell extracts were prepared from log-phase growths of each of the cultivable mycobacterial strains. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzyme was purified from all cultivable mycobacterial strains included in the study, and antibodies against purified SOD enzyme were raised in rabbits. Immunological distances (ImDs) between these anti-SOD antibodies and SOD antigens were determined by a previously described immunoprecipitation method and by a recently developed enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique. The reciprocal ImDs among mycobacterial strains were constant, reproducible and consistent by these two methods. An evolutionary tree was constructed on the basis of estimated ImDs. Except for M. duvalii and M. terrae, slowly and rapidly growing mycobacterial species appeared to be separately grouped by this analysis. Rapid growers clustered into a group which is near that of some slow-growing mycobacteria. M. avium falls almost in the middle of the evolutionary tree and the position of M. leprae was found to be between those of M. avium and M. bovis BCG. Measurement of immunological relatedness of SODs provides an alternative system with which to study the taxonomical relatedness among mycobacteria.

RESUMEN

This study reports on the standardization of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) system for the measurement of immunological distances (ImDs) of the superoxide dismutase (SOD) molecule among the cultivable mycobacteria, namely, Mycobacterium vaccae, M. phlei, M. smegmatis, M. avium, M. scrofulaceum, M. tuberculosis H37Ra, M. tuberculosis H37Rv, and M. bovis BCG, and M. leprae. SODs from cultivable mycobacteria were purified, antibodies were raised against these molecules, and ImDs between these anti-SOD antibodies and antigen (SODs) were determined by an immunoprecipitation technique standardized earlier and by the ELISA technique developed in this study. The ELISA system developed in this study showed higher sensitivity and consistent and reproducible ImDs among various mycobacteria, including pathogens such as M. tuberculosis, M. leprae and M. avium. These values were comparable with the values derived by the immunoprecipitation technique. Our ELISA technique appears to be a sensitive and rapidly reproducible method with the additional advantage of the stability of reagents, and holds promise in the taxonomy as well as in the development of diagnostics for leprosy and other mycobacterial infections.

RESUMEN

Of 613 children evaluated in a village in Haryana 94 (15.3%) were observed to have chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM). Fifty eight (61.7%) children had hearing impairment. CSOM contributed to 71.6% of the hearing impaired (58/81). On analysis of association of CSOM with literacy and socio-economic status of mothers, and age, sex, and upper respiratory tract infections (URI) in children positive correlation was observed only with URIs (P < 0.001). Literacy and socio-economic status of the mothers did not correlate significantly with knowledge about treatment seeking, and ear cleaning practices, probably due to the narrow range of incomes and literacy levels. An intervention program consisting of play, demonstrations, health charts and slogans, and aural cleaning and antibiotic drops was introduced.

RESUMEN

Thirty-six, untreated borderline lepromatous/lepromatous (BL/LL) leprosy patients with an initial bacterial index (BI) of 4+ to 6+ were serially allocated to three treatment groups. Group I patients received a slightly modified WHO regimen (rifampin once a month, clofazimine and dapsone daily) and BCG intradermally (i.d.) (0.1 mg/per dose). Group II patients were administered the same MDT and Mycobacterium w (2 x 10(8)) killed bacilli/dose i.d., and Group III received the same MDT with 0.1 ml of distilled water i.d. Vaccination was repeated every 6 months. Biopsies were taken from the local site of vaccination and from a distant site, i.e., the back. The progress was monitored periodically by clinical, histopathological and bacterial (BI, mouse foot pad, ATP) parameters. Twenty-five patients had completed a follow up of more than 2 years. These included: 7 in Group I, 10 in Group II, and 8 in Group III. One patient of the MDT + BCG group who was progressing well dropped out after 28 months. In cases on combined chemotherapy and immunotherapy, no viable bacilli were demonstrable by mouse foot pad and ATP measurement after 6 months (at 12 months or afterward). However, in come of the control cases on MDT alone, viable bacilli could be detected even up to 18 months (by mouse foot pad) and 2 years (by ATP estimation). With 36 months of treatment, the mean BI decreased from 4.64+ to 1.66+ in the group on MDT alone (controls), 4.9+ to 0.08+ in the MDT + BCG group, and 4.75+ to 0 in the MDT+Mycobacterium w group. Compared with the MDT and MDT + BCG groups, the fall in the BI was significantly more in the MDT + Mycobacterium w group at 12, 18, and 24 months. While all of the cases in the Mycobacterium w groups became smear negative by 36 months, it took 42 months for all of the BCG group to achieve negativity. Immunotherapy appears to have a significant effect on the killing and clearance of bacilli and should be considered as an adjunct to chemotherapy, especially in bacilliferous lepromatous cases.

RESUMEN

India with its 4 million cases of leprosy, accounts for one-third of the world's population of leprosy patients. One-fourth of them are below 15 years of age. We report a 5-year follow-up study of healthy children who were close contacts of leprosy patients, in order to: 1. detect subclinical infection and observe the development of overt disease by using the Fluorescent Leprosy Antibody Absorption Technique (FLA-ABS) and the lepromin test which assess the humoral and cell-mediated immunity (CMI), respectively; 2. evaluate the efficacy of dapsone as a chemoprophylactic agent in the 'at risk' contacts. Four-hundred-and-fifty-five healthy contacts were studied. Majority of the contacts of multibacillary patients (303) were FLA-ABS positive (75 percent) and lepromin negative (55 percent) showing that although most of them had been infected, the lepromin status was negative (P < 0.01). On the other hand, the majority of the contacts of paucibacillary patients (152) were lepromin positive (57 percent) (P < 0.05). Furthermore, only 61 percent of contacts of paucibacillary patients were FLA-ABS positive as compared to 75 percent of contacts of multibacillary patients demonstrating that the former had been exposed to a lesser quantum of infection (P < 0.05). On the basis of results of FLA-ABS and lepromin tests, these 455 contacts were classified into four groups, viz. Group I comprising children who were FLA-ABS positive and lepromin positive; Group II, who were FLA-ABS positive and lepromin negative; Group III, who were FLA-ABS negative and lepromin positive; and Group IV who were FLA-ABS negative and lepromin negative.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
