RESUMEN

The aim of study is to examine the occurrence of battered women seen in Clinica I Oftalmologie Iasi. It is a retrospective study for a 5 year period for documentation of injuries to women as a result of "domestic" violence. The patient range in age was from 15 to 90 years. Injuries ranged including laceration and haemophthalmos in most of the cases. In conclusion, the ophthalmologist must see "domestic" violence in these injuries.

RESUMEN

The article presents the treatment difficulties of the chronic dacryocystitis at an eight month old patient, diagnosed with Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome. The difficulties occurred as a result of numerous antibiotic treatments and surgical procedures suffered by the patient since his second week of life.

RESUMEN

Giant cell (temporal) arteritis remains an enigmatic but a very serious systemic vasculitis which can lead to total, irreversible blindness if not diagnosed and treated swiftly. The characteristic granulomatous inflammation of the vessel wall of large and medium-sized arteries is present. To maintain high standards of management, ophthalmologists need to be aware of the clinical available diagnostic tests and treatment strategies. Corticosteroids remain the treatment of choice.

RESUMEN

Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome, known also as "Broad Thumb-Hallux syndrome", was first recognized by Rubinstein and Taybi in 1963 and is characterized by somatic and ophthalmologic signs. Most commonly somatic changes are: broad thumbs and hallux, craniofacial dysmorphism, growth and psychomotor retardation. Most frequently reported eye anomalies are: antimongoloid slant of the palpebral fissures, strabismus, congenital obstruction of the lacrimal excretory system, colobomas of the iris and of the optic nerve head, ametropia.

RESUMEN

The management of retinoblastoma should be undertaken by multidisciplinary health care team. Ophthalmopediatrics and ocular oncologists have sought effective alternative methods for treating retinoblastoma. The management of retinoblastoma has been changed significant past few years. Recently, advances in understanding of retinoblastoma have led to trials of new treatment modalities aimed at decreasing morbidity and continuing excellent survival. This review tries to present the new and modern aspects in retinoblastoma therapy.

RESUMEN

In literature there are many meanings for the limit between normal and pathological intraocular pressure: "normative pressure", "critic pressure", "individual tolerance pressure" and "target pressure". The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that these terms are synonymous.

RESUMEN

Graves' disease is an autoimmune disorder, progressive and with a variable evolution. In 10-25% of cases, thyroid ophthalmopathy (or dysthyroid ophthalmopathy) occurs in the absence of both clinical and biochemical evidence of thyroid dysfunction. In patients with Graves' disease, ocular modification may precede, coincide with or follow of Graves' disease. Dysthyroid ophthalmopathy has in 85% of cases bilateral proptosis more than a half in unilateral proptosis.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Analysis of the results of primary trabeculectomy in the treatment of congenital glaucoma. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Retrospective study of a series of 62 patients with primary trabeculectomy for congenital glaucoma, with a mean follow-up period of 2.22+/-2.86 years. RESULTS: The last controlled intraocular pressure (IOP) was higher for the patients in the age group 0-1 year (16.9+/-8) as compared with the patients older than 1 year (14.9+/-7). An intraocular pressure < or = 20 mmHg without additional medication has been found in 58.3% of the cases in the 0-1 year age group, versus 65.8% in the group of patients older than 1 year. The number of reoperations was higher in the 0-1 year age group (14), as compared with the group of patients older than 1 year (8). The rate of qualified therapeutic success (IOP < or = 20 mmHg) was 79.1% in the 0-1 year age group, versus 85.5% in the group of patients older than 1 year. CONCLUSIONS: Primary trabeculectomy is effective in the treatment of congenital glaucoma. The poorer results in the group of patients under 1 year of age is correlated with disease severity. The rate of favorable results is increased by reoperation, the majority of surgical failures belonging to the group of patients who needed reoperations.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Comparing the efficiency and incidence of postoperative complications of classical limited trabeculectomy (30-35 degrees trabecular excision) and large and adapted trabeculectomy (60-120 degrees). METHOD: A prospective study of 40 patients with symmetric bilateral glaucoma in whom limited trabeculectomy was performed in one eye and large and adapted trabeculectomy in the opposite eye. All operations were performed by the same surgeon, and the follow up interval was 4.2 years. RESULTS: Postoperative and long-term pressure drop are similar for both types of trabeculectomy. Following limited trabeculectomy the incidence of postoperative complications is 30% lower, the incidence of severe complications is very low and patient's functional rehabilitation is faster. CONCLUSIONS: Except for the clinical conditions where IOP has to be decreased to very low levels (below an intraocular pressure tolerance level of 11-12 mmHg) when a large trabeculectomy is required, limited trabeculectomy is to be preferred as it is safer and obviously beneficial.
