RESUMEN

GeSbTe-based materials exhibit multiple crystalline phases, from disordered rocksalt, to rocksalt with ordered vacancy layers, and to the stable trigonal phase. In this paper we investigate the role of the interfaces on the structural and electrical properties of Ge2Sb2Te5. We find that the site of nucleation of the metastable rocksalt phase is crucial in determining the evolution towards vacancy ordering and the stable phase. By properly choosing the substrate and the capping layers, nucleation sites engineering can be obtained, thus promoting or preventing the vacancy ordering in the rocksalt structure or the conversion into the trigonal phase. The vacancy ordering occurs at lower annealing temperatures (170 °C) for films deposited in the amorphous phase on silicon (111), compared to the case of SiO2 substrate (200 °C), or in presence of a capping layer (330 °C). The mechanisms governing the nucleation have been explained in terms of interfacial energies. Resistance variations of about one order of magnitude have been measured upon transition from the disordered to the ordered rocksalt structure and then to the trigonal phase. The possibility to control the formation of the crystalline phases characterized by marked resistivity contrast is of fundamental relevance for the development of multilevel phase change data storage.

RESUMEN

The first example of one-electron oxidation of thia-bridged triarylamine heterohelicenes to the corresponding exceptionally stable radical cations, fully characterized, as hexafluoroantimonate salts, by means of UV-Vis, EPR, ENDOR, density functional theory calculations and X-ray analyses, is reported. Chemical and electrochemical reversible redox processes are solidly demonstrated.

AIM: The aim of the study is to establish whether healthy full-term breastfed infants require supplemental vitamin D for proper bone mineralization. METHODS: Bone mineralization was studied by performing ultrasound scans of 73 healthy full-term subjects at the age of 3 months. The infants were divided into three groups. Group A: breastfed without supplemental vitamin D (BF); group B: breastfed with supplement of 400 IU/day of vitamin D (BFD); group C: fed with formula (with and without supplemental vitamin D 400 IU/day) (FF). The values of mcSOS (m/sec) and mcBTT (µsec) were assessed in all subjects. RESULTS: A statistically significant difference has been found between group A vs group B both in mcSOS (P=0.03) and in mcBTT (P=0.01) values and also between group A vs group C both in mcSOS (P=0.012) and in mcBTT (P=0.003) values. Significant differences between group B vs group C were not found. In 75% of subjects of group A mcSOS and mcBTT values were ≤ the 10th percentile, while in group B they were between the 10th and 50th percentile. In FF infants given supplemental vitamin D mcSOS and mcBTT values were between the 25th and 75th percentile. CONCLUSION: Human breast milk is an appropriate source of nutrition for the growth of healthy full-term newborns, but is poor in vitamin D as demonstrated by the impaired bone mineralization in the breastfed infants without supplemental vitamin D. The results presented demonstrate that exclusively breastfed infants require at least 400 IU/day of supplemental vitamin D.

We demonstrate optical orientation in Ge/SiGe quantum wells and study their spin properties. The ultrafast electron transfer from the center of the Brillouin zone to its edge allows us to achieve high spin polarizations and to resolve the spin dynamics of holes and electrons. The circular polarization degree of the direct gap photoluminescence exceeds the theoretical bulk limit, yielding ∼37% and ∼85% for transitions with heavy and light holes states, respectively. The spin lifetime of holes at the top of the valence band is estimated to be ∼0.5 ps and it is governed by transitions between light and heavy hole states. Electrons at the bottom of the conduction band, on the other hand, have a spin lifetime that exceeds 5 ns below 150 K. Theoretical analysis of the spin relaxation indicates that phonon-induced intervalley scattering dictates the spin lifetime of electrons.

The objective of this collaborative work carried out in the Fundación Favaloro and the Fundación para la Lucha contra las Enfermedades Neurológicas de la Infancia, was to determine optimal conditions for incubation (time and atmosphere) of quantitative cultures of catheters processed according to the technique of vortex agitation (Brun Buisson method). From 689 processed catheters, 551 yielded negative cultures. From the 138 positive cultures, 125 yielded monomicrobial cultures and 13 polimicrobial cultures (total number of microorganisms was 151). In the last situation each micoorganism was considered on an individual basis. A total of 58 episodes of catheter related bacteremias occurred, being 52 monomicrobial and 6 polimicrobial (total number of microorganisms was 64). When colony counts were compared in aerobic and in 5-10% CO2 atmospheres, a very good correlation was obtained (p = 0.27; r2 = 0.9268). No advantage was observed by incubating plates for more than 48 hours. Colony counts performed at the second versus the third day, and at the second day versus the seventh, gave very good correlation (p = 0.10 and r2 = 0.9996; p = 0.31 and r2 = 0.9995, respectively).

Between January, 1, 1986 and December, 31, 2000, dermatological specimens from 10.678 animals (7.650 cats and 3.028 dogs) were examined for dermatophytes. All the animals presented clinical signs of ringworm. Two thousand-four hundred fifty-six of the 10.678 (23%) examined animals scored positive for dermatophytes, 566 out of 3.028 canine (18.7%) and 1890 out of 7.650 feline specimens (24.7%). Microsporum canis constituted 83% and 97% of the isolated dermatophytes respectively in dogs and cats, M. gypseum represented 13% and 2.6% and T. mentagrophytes 5.5% and 0.2%. A sexual predisposition for mycotic infections was not observed. The animals with less than 1 year of age were more frequently infected. Canine toy breeds showed a significantly higher (P < 0.001) prevalence of infections by M. canis. Microsporum gypseum was mostly recorded from sporting (hunting) breeds [such as T. mentagrophytes (6.7%)]. Microsporum canis was isolated from long-haired cats with a ratio of 2:1 versus short-haired cats, while M. gypseum and T. mentagrophytes were never recovered from Persian cats. The annual distribution of the infections in dogs showed a significantly higher incidence for M. gypseum in summer versus winter and spring, while the recovery rate of M. canis from cats was very significantly higher in fall and winter than in summer and spring. Trichophyton mentagrophytes did not show a similar seasonal distribution.

Although interleukin 1 (IL-1) functions have been extensively characterized, the mechanisms by which IL-1 signals are transduced from the plasma membrane to the nucleus are less known. Recent evidence indicates that phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3-kinase) could be activated by a direct association with the activated IL-1 receptor. In this study we analyzed the effects of IL-1 on the intracellular distribution of PI3-kinase in wild-type Saos-2 human osteosarcoma cells, and in cell clones overexpressing type I IL-1 receptor (IL-1RI). PI3-kinase intracellular distribution displays two distinct patterns. In quiescent cells, PI3-kinase is distributed through the cytoplasm, although a portion is present in the nucleus; following stimulation with IL-1, PI3-kinase is redistributed, increasing in the nuclear compartment. Both immunoblotting and immunofluorescence data indicate that IL-1 causes a rapid and transient translocation of PI3-kinase from the cytoplasm to the nucleus. This phenomenon is prevented by PI3-kinase inhibitors, suggesting that the maintenance of PI3-kinase activity is essential for IL-1-induced translocation. Indeed, in cell clones stably transfected with Y479F receptor mutant, in which the binding of the enzyme to the activated receptor is blocked, IL-1-induced PI3-kinase translocation to the nucleus is completely prevented. These data suggest that PI3-kinase translocation to the nucleus upon IL-1R activation is an early event in IL-1 signaling mechanism, and may be involved in transcriptional activation.

Intramembrane proteins (IMP) represent a class of proteins located in the lipid bilayer of the cell membrane which function as ion channels, enzymes or receptors. Since it has been argued that biological effects of extremely low frequency (ELF) electromagnetic fields are mediated by plasma membrane. this work was designed to study the possible effects of 50 Hz pulsed magnetic fields (PMF) of the type used to stimulate bone repair, on the distribution of IMP in the plasma membrane of Swiss NIH 3T3 fibroblasts. Evaluations were based on the calculation of a distribution factor, which allows discrimination between random, regular and clustered distribution of IMP, in electron microscope images of freeze-fractured membranes. The results indicate that cells exposed to PMF for more than two hours have a significant clustering of the IMP distribution compared to control unexposed cells.

RESUMEN

A detailed description is given of a rapid, simple and economic technique for the electrophoretic migration on agarose gel of serum lipoproteins. The albuminated agarose is spread hot on pieces of normal radiological plates even if already used. The reservoir for the serum is obtained by putting in the agarose while still hot a series of small metal bars. The moulds are removed with a small magnet as soon as the gel is formed. Plates prepared for 6-7 lipidograms can comfortably be kept for as long as 20-30 days. For stored plates ready for use, the analytic procedure does not require more than 40-45 minutes. The results can be considered altogether satisfactory.
