RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Accurate pre-surgical templating of the pelvic tilt (PT) angle is essential for hip and spine surgeries, yet the reliability of PT annotations is often compromised by human error, inherent subjectivity, and variations in radiographic quality. This study aims to identify challenges leading to inadequate annotations at a landmark dimension and evaluating their impact on PT. METHODS: We retrospectively collected 115 consecutive sagittal radiographs for the measurement of PT based on two definitions: the anterior pelvic plane and a line connecting the femoral head's centre to the sacral plate's midpoint. Five annotators engaged in the measurement, followed by a secondary review to assess the adequacy of the annotations across all the annotators. RESULTS: The outcomes indicated that over 60% images had at least one landmark considered inadequate by the majority of the reviewers, with poor image quality, outliers, and unrecognized anomalies being the primary causes. Such inadequacies led to discrepancies in the PT measurements, ranging from -2° to 2°. CONCLUSION: This study highlights that landmarks annotated from clear anatomical references were more reliable than those estimated. It also underscores the prevalence of suboptimal annotations in PT measurements, which extends beyond the scope of traditional statistical analysis and could result in significant deviations in individual cases, potentially impacting clinical outcomes.

RESUMEN

Zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) is a biomaterial that has been increasingly studied in recent years. It has several applications such as bone regeneration, promotion of angiogenesis, drug loading, and antibacterial activity, and exerts multiple effects to deal with various problems in the process of bone regeneration. This systematic review aims to provide an overview of the applications and effectiveness of ZIF-8 in bone regeneration. A search of papers published in the PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases revealed 532 relevant studies. Title, abstract, and full-text screening resulted in 39 papers being included in the review, including 39 in vitro and 22 animal studies. Appropriate concentrations of nano ZIF-8 can promote cell proliferation and osteogenic differentiation by releasing Zn2+ and entering the cell, whereas high doses of ZIF-8 are cytotoxic and inhibit osteogenic differentiation. In addition, five studies confirmed that ZIF-8 exhibits good vasogenic activity. In all in vivo experiments, nano ZIF-8 promoted bone formation. These results indicate that, at appropriate concentrations, materials containing ZIF-8 promote bone regeneration more than materials without ZIF-8, and with characteristics such as promoting angiogenesis, drug loading, and antibacterial activity, it is expected to show promising applications in the field of bone regeneration. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: This manuscript reviewed the use of ZIF-8 in bone regeneration, clarified the biocompatibility and effectiveness in promoting bone regeneration of ZIF-8 materials, and discussed the possible mechanisms and factors affecting its promotion of bone regeneration. Overall, this study provides a better understanding of the latest advances in the field of bone regeneration of ZIF-8, serves as a design guide, and contributes to the design of future experimental studies.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Pelvic tilt (PT) is a routinely evaluated parameter in hip and spine surgeries, and is usually measured on a sagittal pelvic radiograph. This may not always be feasible due to limitations such as landmark visibility, pelvic anomaly, and hardware presence. Tremendous efforts have been dedicated to using pelvic antero-posterior (AP) radiographs for assessing sagittal PT. Thus, this systematic review aimed to collect these methods and evaluate their performances. METHODS: Two independent reviewers searched the PubMed, Ovid, Cochrane, and Web of Science databases in June 2023 with backward reference trailing (Google Scholar archive). There were 30 studies recruited. Risk of bias was assessed using the prediction model risk of bias assessment tool. The relevant data were tabulated in a standardized form for evaluating either the absolute PT or relative PT. Disagreement was resolved by discussing with the senior author. RESULTS: There were 19 parameters from pelvic AP projection images involved, with 4 studies which used artificial intelligence, eyeball, or statistical shape method not involving a specific parameter. In comparing the PT values from pelvic sagittal images with those extrapolated from antero-posterior projection images, the highest correlation coefficient was found to be 0.91. The mean absolute difference (error) was 2.6°, with a maximum error reaching 10.9°. Most studies supported the feasibility of using AP parameters to calculate changes in PT. CONCLUSIONS: No individual AP parameter was found to precisely estimate absolute PT. However, relative PT can be derived by evaluating serial AP radiographs of a patient in varying postures, employing any AP parameters.

RESUMEN

Coupled neural network models are playing an increasingly important part in the modulation of absence seizures today. However, it is currently unclear how basal ganglia, corticothalamic network and pedunculopontine nucleus can coordinate with each other to develop a whole coupling circuit, theoretically. In addition, it is still difficult to select effective parameters of electrical stimulation on the regulation of absence seizures in clinical trials. Therefore, to develop a coupled model and reduce computation cost, a new model constructed by a simplified basal ganglion, two corticothalamic circuits and a pedunculopontine nucleus was proposed. Further, to seek better inhibition therapy, three electrical stimulations, high frequency stimulation (HFS), 1:0 coordinate reset stimulation (CRS) and 3:2 CRS, were applied to the thalamic reticular nucleus (RE) in the first corticothalamic circuit in the coupled model. The simulation results revealed that increasing the frequency and pulse width of an electrical stimulation within a certain range can also suppress seizures. Under the same parameters of electrical stimulation, the inhibitory effect of HFS on seizures was better than that of 1:0 CRS and 3:2 CRS. The research established a reduced corticothalamic-basal ganglion-pedunculopontine nucleus model, which lays a theoretical foundation for future optimal parameters selection of electrical stimulation. We hope that the findings will provide new insights into the role of theoretical models in absence seizures.

RESUMEN

The use of TADF materials as both sensitizers and emitters is a promising route to achieve high-efficiency all-fluorescent white organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs). In this study, the thermally-activated delayed-fluorescent (TADF) material DMAC-TRZ (9,9-dimethyl-9,10-dihydroacridine-2,4,6-triphenyl-1,3,5-triazine) was selected as a sensitizer for the conventional fluorescent emitter DCJTB (4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-t-butyl-6-(1,1,7,7-tetramethyljulolidyl-9-enyl)-4H-pyran), which was co-doped in a wide bandgap host of DPEPO (bis[2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl]ether oxide) to fabricate WOLEDs. For the emitting layer of DPEPO:DMAC-TRZ:DCJTB, the DPEPO host can dilute the exciton concentration formed on the DMAC-TRZ sensitizer, which benefits the suppression of exciton quenching. The effect of the doping concentration of DCJTB on the carrier recombination and energy transfer process was investigated. With an optimized doping concentration of DCJTB as 0.8%, highly efficient WOLED was achieved with a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE), power efficiency (PE), and current efficiency (CE) of 11.05%, 20.83 lm W-1, and 28.83 cd A-1, respectively, corresponding to the Commission Internationale de I' Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.45, 0.46). These superior performances can be ascribed to the fact that the hole-trapping effect of the emitter and Dexter energy transfer (DET) from sensitizer to emitter can be suppressed simultaneously by the extremely low doping concentration.

RESUMEN

In pelvic trauma patients, the mismatch of complex geometries between the pelvis and fixation implant is a fundamental cause of unstable and displaced pelvic ring disruption, in which secondary intervention is strongly considered. The geometrical matching in the current customized implant design and clinical practice is through the nonfractured hemi-pelvis for the fractured pelvis. This design philosophy overlooks the anatomical difference between the hemipelves, and further, the geometrical asymmetry at local area still remains unknown. This study analyzed the anatomical asymmetry of a patient's 3D pelvic models from 13 patients. The hemipelves of each patient were registered by using an iterative closet algorithm to an optimum position with minimum deviations. The high deviation regions were summarized between the hemipelves in each case, and a color map was drawn on a hemipelvis model that identified the areas that had a high possibility to be symmetrically different. A severe pelvic trauma case was used to comprehend the approach by designing a 3D printed implant. Each fracture was then registered to the mirrored uninjured hemipelvis by using the same algorithm, and customized fixation implants were designed with reference to the fractured model. The customized fixation plates showed that the implants had lower geometrical deviation when attached onto the re-stitched fracture side than onto the mirrored nonfractured bone. These results indicate that the symmetrical analysis of bone anatomy and the deviation color map can assist with implant selection and customized implant design given the geometrical difference between symmetrical bones. The novel approach provides a scientific reference that improves the accuracy and overall standard of 3D printed implants.

RESUMEN

Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by the progressive loss of neurons and intricate interactions between different cell types within the affected regions. Reliable biomarkers that can accurately reflect disease activity, diagnose, and monitor the progression of neurodegenerative diseases are crucial for the development of effective therapies. However, identifying suitable biomarkers has been challenging due to the heterogeneous nature of these diseases, affecting specific subsets of neurons in different brain regions. One promising approach for promoting brain regeneration and recovery involves the transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). MSCs have demonstrated the ability to modulate the immune system, promote neurite outgrowth, stimulate angiogenesis, and repair damaged tissues, partially through the release of their extracellular vesicles (EVs). MSC-derived EVs retain some of the therapeutic characteristics of their parent MSCs, including their ability to regulate neurite outgrowth, promote angiogenesis, and facilitate tissue repair. This review aims to explore the potential of MSC-derived EVs as an emerging therapeutic strategy for neurodegenerative diseases, highlighting their role in modulating disease progression and promoting neuronal recovery. By elucidating the mechanisms by which MSC-derived EVs exert their therapeutic effects, we can advance our understanding and leverage their potential for the development of novel treatment approaches in the field of neurodegenerative diseases.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The role of delayed feedback stimulation in the discussion of Parkinson's disease (PD) has recently received increasing attention. Stimulation of pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN) is an emerging treatment for PD. However, the effect of PPN in regulating PD is ignored, and the delayed feedback stimulation algorithm is facing some problems in parameter selection. METHODS: On the basis of a neural mass model, we established a new network for PPN. Four types of delayed feedback stimulation schemes were designed, such as stimulating subthalamic nucleus (STN) with the local field potentials (LFPs) of STN nucleus, globus pallidus (GPe) with the LFPs of Gpe nucleus, PPN with the LFPs of Gpe nucleus, and STN with the LFPs of PPN nucleus. RESULTS: In this study, we found that all four kinds of delayed feedback schemes are effective, suggesting that the algorithm is simple and more effective in experiments. More specifically, the other three control schemes improved the control performance and reduced the stimulation energy expenditure compared with traditional stimulating STN itself only. CONCLUSION: PPN stimulation can affect the new network and help to suppress pathological oscillations for each neuron. We hope that our results can gain an insight into the future clinical treatment.

RESUMEN

Excessive neural synchronization of neural populations in the beta (ß) frequency range (12-35 Hz) is intimately related to the symptoms of hypokinesia in Parkinson's disease (PD). Studies have shown that delayed feedback stimulation strategies can interrupt excessive neural synchronization and effectively alleviate symptoms associated with PD dyskinesia. Work on optimizing delayed feedback algorithms continues to progress, yet it remains challenging to further improve the inhibitory effect with reduced energy expenditure. Therefore, we first established a neural mass model of the cortex-basal ganglia-thalamus-pedunculopontine nucleus (CBGTh-PPN) closed-loop system, which can reflect the internal properties of cortical and basal ganglia neurons and their intrinsic connections with thalamic and pedunculopontine nucleus neurons. Second, the inhibitory effects of three delayed feedback schemes based on the external globus pallidum (GPe) on ß oscillations were investigated separately and compared with those based on the subthalamic nucleus (STN) only. Our results show that all four delayed feedback schemes achieve effective suppression of pathological ß oscillations when using the linear delayed feedback algorithm. The comparison revealed that the three GPe-based delayed feedback stimulation strategies were able to have a greater range of oscillation suppression with reduced energy consumption, thus improving control performance effectively, suggesting that they may be more effective for the relief of Parkinson's motor symptoms in practical applications.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Navigation in total hip arthroplasty has been shown to improve acetabular positioning and can decrease the incidence of mal-positioned acetabular components. This study aimed to assess two surgical guidance systems by comparing intra-operative measurements of acetabular component inclination and anteversion with a post-operative CT scan. METHODS: We prospectively collected intra-operative navigation data from 102 hips receiving conventional THA or hip resurfacing arthroplasty through either a direct anterior or posterior approach. Two guidance systems were used simultaneously: an inertial navigation system (INS) and an optical navigation system (ONS). Acetabular component anteversion and inclination were measured on a post-operative CT. RESULTS: The average age of the patients was 64 years (range: 24-92) and the average BMI was 27 kg/m2 (range 19-38). 52% had hip surgery through an anterior approach. 98% of the INS measurements and 88% of the ONS measurements were within 10° of the CT measurements. The mean (and standard deviation) of the absolute difference between the postoperative CT and the intra-operative measurements for inclination and anteversion were 3.0° (2.8) and 4.5° (3.2) respectively for the ONS, along with 2.1° (2.3) and 2.4° (2.1) respectively for the INS. There was a significantly lower mean absolute difference to CT for the INS when compared to ONS in both anteversions (p < 0.001) and inclination (p = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS: We found that both inertial and optical navigation systems allowed for adequate acetabular positioning as measured on postoperative CT, and thus provide reliable intraoperative feedback for optimal acetabular component placement. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Therapeutic Level II.

RESUMEN

Background: Pelvic tilt (PT) is described as the pelvic orientation along the transverse axis, yet 4 PT definitions were established based on radiographic landmarks: anterior pelvic plane (PTa), the center of femoral heads to sacral plate (PTm), pelvic outlet (PTh), and sacral slope (SS). These landmarks quantify a similar concept, yet understanding of their relationships is lacking, and their differences are sometimes ignored. Purpose: This study aimed to examine the correlations and differences of PT definitions for education and research purposes. Methods: This study reviewed 105 sagittal pelvic radiographs of patients (68 men and 37 women) awaiting hip surgery at a single clinic. Hip hardware and spine pathologies were examined for subgroup analysis. Two observers annotated 4 PTs in a gender-dependent manner and repeated it after 6 months. The linear regression model and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were applied with a 95% confidence interval. Results: The SS showed no correlation to the other 3 PT definitions, except for females in the hip hardware subgroup (n = 17). PTm demonstrated very strong linear correlation to PTh (r > 0.9) under the linear model PTm = 0.951 × PTh - 68.284. Conclusion: The PTm and PTh can be calculated from each other under a simple linear regression equation, which enables comparisons between them. SS presented poor correlations to the other PT parameters, except for the female subgroup with hip implant that required further analysis; PTa-related comparisons showed high anatomical variations between patients.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The accurate measurement of pelvic tilt is critical in hip and spine surgery. A sagittal pelvic radiograph is most often used to measure pelvic tilt, but this radiograph is not always routinely obtained and does not always allow the measurement of pelvic tilt because of problems with image quality or patient characteristics (such as high BMI or the presence of a spinal deformity). Although a number of recent studies have explored the correlation between pelvic tilt and the sacro-femoral-pubic angle using AP radiographs (SFP method), which aimed to estimate pelvic tilt without a sagittal radiograph, disagreement remains about whether the SFP method is sufficiently valid and reproducible for clinical use. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: The purpose of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the correlation between SFP and pelvic tilt in the following groups: (1) overall cohort, (2) male and female cohort, and (3) skeletally mature and immature cohorts (young and adult groups, defined as patients older or younger than 20 years). Additionally, we assessed (4) the errors of SFP-estimated pelvic tilt angles and determined (5) measurement reproducibility using the intraclass correlation coefficient. METHODS: This meta-analysis was reported in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines and registered in PROSPERO (record ID: CRD42022315673). PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and Web of Science were screened in July 2022. The following keywords were used: sacral femoral pubic, sacro femoral pubic, or SFP. The exclusion criteria were nonresearch articles such as commentaries or letters and studies that only investigated relative pelvic tilt rather than absolute pelvic tilt. Although the included studies had different patient recruitment strategies, study quality-wise, they all used an adequate amount of radiographs for landmark annotation and applied a correlation analysis for the relationship between the SFP angle and pelvic tilt. Thus, no risk of bias was found. Participant differences were mitigated via subgroup and sensitivity analyses to remove outliers. Publication bias was assessed using the p value of a two-tailed Egger regression test for the asymmetry of funnel plots, as well as the Duval and Tweedie trim and fill method for potential missing publications to impute true correlations. The extracted correlation coefficients r were pooled using the Fisher Z transformation with a significance level of 0.05. Nine studies were included in the meta-analysis, totaling 1247 patients. Four studies were used in the sex-controlled subgroup analysis (312 male and 460 female patients), and all nine studies were included in the age-controlled subgroup analysis (627 adults and 620 young patients). Moreover, a sex-controlled subgroup analysis was conducted in two studies with only young cohorts (190 young male patients and 220 young female patients). RESULTS: The overall pooled correlation coefficient between SFP and pelvic tilt was 0.61, with high interstudy heterogeneity (I 2 = 76%); a correlation coefficient of 0.61 is too low for most clinical applications. The subgroup analysis showed that the female group had a higher correlation coefficient than the male group did (0.72 versus 0.65; p = 0.03), and the adult group had a higher correlation coefficient than the young group (0.70 versus 0.56; p < 0.01). Three studies reported erroneous information about the measured pelvic tilt and calculated pelvic tilt from the SFP angle. The mean absolute error was 4.6° ± 4.5°; in one study, 78% of patients (39 of 50) were within 5° of error, and in another study, the median absolute error was 5.8º, with the highest error at 28.8° (50 female Asian patients). The intrarater intraclass correlation coefficients ranged between 0.87 and 0.97 for the SFP angle and between 0.89 and 0.92 for the pelvic tilt angle, and the interrater intraclass correlation coefficients ranged between 0.84 and 1.00 for the SFP angle and 0.76 and 0.98 for the pelvic tilt angle. However, large confidence intervals were identified, suggesting considerable uncertainty in measurement at the individual radiograph level. CONCLUSION: This meta-analysis of the best-available evidence on this topic found the SFP method to be unreliable to extrapolate sagittal pelvic tilt in any patient group, and it was especially unreliable in the young male group (defined as patients younger than age 20 years). Correlation coefficients generally were too low for clinical use, but we remind readers that even a high correlation coefficient does not alone justify clinical application of a metric such as this, unless further subgroup analyses find low error and low heterogeneity, which was not the case here. Further ethnicity-segregated subgroup analyses with age, sex, and diagnosis controls could be useful in the future to determine whether there are some subgroups in which the SFP method is useful. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level III, diagnostic study.

RESUMEN

Xinggao sheep are a breed of Chinese domestic sheep that are adapted to the extremely cold climatic features of the Hinggan League in China. The economically vital reproductive trait of ewes (litter size, LS) and productive traits of lambs (birth weight, BWT; weaning weight, WWT; and average daily gain, ADG) are expressed in females and later in life after most of the selection decisions have been made. This study estimated the genetic parameters for four traits to explore the genetic mechanisms underlying the variation, and we performed genome-wide association study (GWAS) tests on a small sample size to identify novel marker trait associations (MTAs) associated with prolificacy and growth. We detected two suggestive significant single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with LS and eight significant SNPs for BWT, WWT, and ADG. These candidate loci and genes also provide valuable information for further fine-mapping of QTLs and improvement of reproductive and productive traits in sheep.

RESUMEN

Solid-state quantum emitters (QEs) are central components for photonic-based quantum information processing. Recently, bright QEs in III-nitride semiconductors, such as aluminum nitride (AlN), have attracted increasing interest because of the mature commercial application of the nitrides. However, the reported QEs in AlN suffer from broad phonon side bands (PSBs) and low Debye-Waller factors. Meanwhile, there is also a need for more reliable fabrication methods of AlN QEs for integrated quantum photonics. Here, we demonstrate that laser-induced QEs in AlN exhibit robust emission with a strong zero phonon line, narrow line width, and weak PSB. The creation yield of a single QE could be more than 50%. More importantly, they have a high Debye-Waller factor (>65%) at room temperature, which is the highest result among reported AlN QEs. Our results illustrate the potential of laser writing to create high-quality QEs for quantum technologies and provide further insight into laser writing defects in relevant materials.

RESUMEN

Negative energy balance (NEB) during the perinatal period leads to metabolic and immunological disorders in dairy cows, resulting in systemic responses and inflammation. The innate immune system is crucial for the host's protection and inflammatory response. However, systematic research is still lacking on how NEB affects the innate immune system to alter the 'host defense capability and inflammatory response. In this investigation, raw transcriptome data of adipose, blood, endometrial, hypothalamus, and liver tissues were downloaded from a public database, cleaned, aligned, quantified, and batch-corrected. The innate immune gene list was retrieved from innateDB, followed by the expression matrix of innate immune genes in various tissues for differential expression analysis, principle component analysis (PCA), and gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA). Under the effect of NEB, adipose tissue had the most differentially expressed genes, which were predominantly up-regulated, whereas blood GSEA had the most enriched biological processes, which were predominantly down-regulated. The gene sets shared by different tissues, which are predominantly involved in biological processes associated with defense responses and inflammation, were dramatically down-regulated in endometrial tissues and highly up-regulated in other tissues. Under the impact of NEB, LBP, PTX3, S100A12, and LCN2 play essential roles in metabolism and immunological control. In conclusion, NEB can downregulate the defensive response of innate immune genes in endometrial, upregulate the immune and inflammatory response of other tissues, activate the host defense response, and increase the systemic inflammatory response. The analysis of the effects of NEB on innate immune genes from the multiple tissues analysis provides new insights into the crosstalk between metabolism and immunity and also provides potential molecular targets for disease diagnosis and disease resistance breeding in dairy cows.

RESUMEN

Age is an important physiological factor that affects the metabolism and immune function of beef cattle. While there have been many studies using the blood transcriptome to study the effects of age on gene expression, few have been reported on beef cattle. To this end, we used the blood transcriptomes of Japanese black cattle at different ages as the study subjects and screened 1055, 345, and 1058 differential expressed genes (DEGs) in the calf vs. adult, adult vs. old, and calf vs. old comparison groups, respectively. The weighted co-expression network consisted of 1731 genes. Finally, blue, brown, and yellow age-specific modules were obtained, in which genes were enriched in signaling pathways related to growth and development and immune metabolic dysfunction, respectively. Protein-protein interaction (PPI) analysis showed gene interactions in each specific module, and 20 of the highest connectivity genes were chosen as potential hub genes. Finally, we identified 495, 244, and 1007 genes by exon-wide selection signature (EWSS) analysis of different comparison groups. Combining the results of hub genes, we found that VWF, PARVB, PRKCA, and TGFB1I1 could be used as candidate genes for growth and development stages of beef cattle. CORO2B and SDK1 could be used as candidate marker genes associated with aging. In conclusion, by comparing the blood transcriptome of calves, adult cattle, and old cattle, the candidate genes related to immunity and metabolism affected by age were identified, and the gene co-expression network of different age stages was constructed. It provides a data basis for exploring the growth, development, and aging of beef cattle.

RESUMEN

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) and electromagnetic induction are new techniques that are increasingly used in modern epilepsy treatments; however, the mechanism of action remains unclear. In this study, we constructed a bidirectional-coupled cortico-thalamic model, based on which we proposed three regulation schemes: isolated regulation of DBS, isolated regulation of electromagnetic induction and combined regulation of the previous two. In particular, we introduced DBS with a lower amplitude and considered the influence of electromagnetic induction caused by the transmembrane current on the membrane potential. The most striking finding of this study is that the three therapeutic schemes could effectively control abnormal discharge, and combined regulation could reduce the occurrence of epileptic seizures more effectively. The present study bridges the gap between the bidirectional coupling model and combined control. In this way, the damage induced by electrical stimulation of the patient's brain tissue could be reduced, and the abnormal physiological discharge pattern of the cerebral cortex was simultaneously regulated by different techniques. This work opens new avenues for improving brain dysfunction in patients with epilepsy, expands ideas for promoting the development of neuroscience and is meaningful for improving the health of modern society and developing the field of science.

RESUMEN

Wheat is a globally important crop and one of the "big three" US field crops. But unlike the other two (maize and soybean), in the United States its development is commercially unattractive, and so its breeding takes place primarily in public universities. Troublingly, the incentive structures within these universities may be hindering genetic improvement just as climate change is complicating breeding efforts. "Business as usual" in the US public wheat-breeding infrastructure may not sustain productivity increases. To address this concern, we held a multidisciplinary conference in which researchers from 12 US (public) universities and one European university shared the current state of knowledge in their disciplines, aired concerns, and proposed initiatives that could facilitate maintaining genetic improvement of wheat in the face of climate change. We discovered that climate-change-oriented breeding efforts are currently considered too risky and/or costly for most university wheat breeders to undertake, leading to a relative lack of breeding efforts that focus on abiotic stressors such as drought and heat. We hypothesize that this risk/cost burden can be reduced through the development of appropriate germplasm, relevant screening mechanisms, consistent germplasm characterization, and innovative models predicting the performance of germplasm under projected future climate conditions. However, doing so will require coordinated, longer-term, inter-regional efforts to generate phenotype data, and the modification of incentive structures to consistently reward such efforts.

RESUMEN

Objectives: Although 3-dimensional (3D) printing is becoming more widely adopted for clinical applications, it is yet to be accepted as part of standard practice. One of the key applications of this technology is orthopaedic surgical planning for urgent trauma cases. Anatomically accurate replicas of patients' fracture models can be produced to guide intervention. These high-quality models facilitate the design and printing of patient-specific implants and surgical devices. Therefore, a fast and accurate workflow will help orthopaedic surgeons to generate high-quality 3D printable models of complex fractures. Currently, there is a lack of access to an uncomplicated and inexpensive workflow. Methods: Using patient DICOM data sets (n = 13), we devised a novel, simple, open-source, and rapid modeling process using Drishti software and compared its efficacy and data storage with the 3D Slicer image computing platform. We imported the computed tomography image directory acquired from patients into the software to isolate the model of bone surface from surrounding soft tissue using the minimum functions. One pelvic fracture case was further integrated into the customized implant design practice to demonstrate the compatibility of the 3D models generated from Drishti. Results: The data sizes of the generated 3D models and the processing files that represent the original DICOM of Drishti are on average 27% and 12% smaller than that of 3D Slicer, respectively (both P < 0.05). The time frame needed to reach the stage of viewing the 3D bone model and the exporting of the data of Drishti is 39% and 38% faster than that of 3D Slicer, respectively (both P < 0.05). We also constructed a virtual model using third-party software to trial the implant design. Conclusions: Drishti is more suitable for urgent trauma cases that require fast and efficient 3D bone reconstruction with less hardware requirement. 3D Slicer performs better at quantitative preoperative planning and multilayer segmentation. Both software platforms are compatible with third-party programs used to produce customized implants that could be useful for surgical training. Level of Evidence: Level V.
