RESUMEN

Background and objectives: Acute aortic syndrome (AAS) is a life-threatening condition in which there is a fracture in the integrity of the aortic wall. gamma-glutamyl transferase to lymphocyte ratio (GLR) is recognized as a risk factor for liver cirrhosis, fibrosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. However, there are no clinical reports of GLR and AAS. We attempted to determine whether GLR level is associated with AAS in patients from the Chaoshan region of southern China. Methods: A total of 2,384 patients were recruited in this study and were divided into AAS and no-AAS groups according to the results of CT angiography of the thoracoabdominal aorta. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression was performed to identify risk factors for the occurrence of AAS. ROC was applied to assess the value of D-Dimer, GLR alone, or in combination for the diagnosis of AAS. And a 1:1 propensity score-matched analysis was performed. Results: Multivariate logistics regression analysis indicated that male, age, hypertension, diabetes, creatinine, D-dimer, and GLR were independent risk factors of AAS patients in the before propensity score-matching cohort. After propensity score-matching, it showed that D-dimer, GLR [OR 3.558(1.891, 6.697); p < 0.001] were independent risk factors of AAS patients. Before propensity score-matching, the area under the curve (AUC) was 0.822 of GLR and 0.767 of D-dimer. When both clinical backgrounds were adjusted, the AUC was 0.773 of GLR and 0.631 of D-dimer. GLR showed high specificity (80.5% and 77.1%), and D-dimer showed high sensitivity (84.7% and 73.6%) in the before and after propensity score-matching cohort. Conclusion: GLR and D-dimer were independent risk factors of acute aortic syndrome. D-dimer in combination with GLR is more valuable than a single indicator for diagnosing acute aortic syndrome.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Effective labor pain management is crucial for parturient well-being, as it can improve the delivery experience of pregnant women and reduce anxiety and tension. This systematic review and network meta-analysis compared the efficacy and safety of various analgesics, classified by drug category and individual treatment methods, for labor pain control. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in Pubmed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases. All searches commenced from the database's inception to the date of the literature search (May 31, 2023). The Cochrane Risk of Bias 2 tool assessed study bias risk. Network meta-analyses using a random-effects model and odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were performed. RESULTS: Fifteen randomized controlled trials evaluating analgesic interventions in ASA I or II parturients were included. Combination therapies (OR: 5.81; 95% CI, 3.76-7.84; probability: 60%) and non-opioid analgesics (OR: 5.61; 95% CI, 2.91-8.30; probability: 39.2%) were superior to placebo for labor pain relief. Specifically, dexmedetomidine/ropivacaine/sufentanil (OR: 7.32; 95% CI, 2.73-11.89; probability: 40.6%) and dexmedetomidine/ropivacaine (OR: 6.50; 95% CI, 2.51-10.33; probability: 11.9%) combinations, bupivacaine/fentanyl and ropivacaine/sufentanil combinations, and remifentanil monotherapy showed improved analgesic efficacy versus placebo. Dexmedetomidine/ropivacaine reduced parturient nausea and vomiting versus alternatives. CONCLUSION: Non-opioids, opioids and combinations thereof effectively relieved labor pain. In addition, dexmedetomidine/ropivacaine combination demonstrated analgesic efficacy and lower nausea and vomiting incidence.

RESUMEN

Plant invasions severely threaten natural ecosystems, and invasive plants often outcompete native plants across various ecosystems. Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, serving as beneficial microorganisms for host plants, can greatly influence the competitive outcomes of invasive plants against native plants. However, it remains unclear how AM fungi alter the competitive balance between native and invasive species. A competitive experiment was conducted using an invasive Eupatorium adenophorum paired with a native congener Eupatorium lindleyanum. Specifically, both species were inoculated with (M+) or without (M-) the fungus Glomus etunicatum under intraspecific (Intra-) and interspecific (Inter-) competition. Plant traits were measured and analyzed regarding the growth and nutrition of both species. The results exhibited that the AM fungus significantly increased the height, diameter, biomass, C, N, and P acquisition of both the invasive E. adenophorum and the native E. lindleyanum. The root mycorrhizal colonization and the mycorrhizal dependency of native E. lindleyanum were greater than those of invasive E. adenophorum. Under M+, the Inter-competition inhibited the growth and nutrition of invasive E. adenophorum compared to the Intra- competition. Further, native E. lindleyanum exhibited higher competitiveness than invasive E. adenophorum in growth and nutrition. Meanwhile, the AM fungus significantly improved the competitiveness of native E. lindleyanum over invasive E. adenophorum. In conclusion, AM fungus improved the competitive advantage of native E. lindleyanum over invasive E. adenophorum in growth and nutrition, potentially contributing to native species competitively resisting the invasion of exotic species. These findings emphasize the importance of AM fungi in helping native plants resist the invasion of exotic plants and further contribute to understanding plant invasion prevention mechanisms.

RESUMEN

To support older users' accessibility and learning of the prevalent information and communication technologies (ICTs), libraries, as informal learning institutes, are committed to information literacy education activities with friendly interfaces. Chatbots using Voice User Interfaces (VUIs) with natural and intuitive interactions have received growing research and practical attention; however, older users report regular frustrations and problems in using them. To serve as a basis for the subsequent design and development of an automated dialog mechanism in senior-friendly chatbots, a between-subject user experiment was conducted with 30 older adults divided into three groups. The preliminary findings on their interactions with the voice chatbots designed with different error handling strategies were reported. Participants' behavioral patterns, performances, and the tactics they employed in interacting with the three types of chatbots were analyzed. The results of the study showed that the use of multiple error handling strategies is beneficial for older users to achieve effectiveness and satisfaction in human-robot interactions, and facilitate their attitude toward information technology. This study contributes empirical evidence in the genuine and pragmatic field of gerontechnology and expands upon voice chatbots research by exploring conversation errors in human-robot interactions that could be of further application in designing educational and living gerontechnology.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) is an uncommon tumor of mesenchymal origin. Cases of PEComa in the liver are extremely rare. AIM: To analyze the clinicopathological features and treatment of hepatic PEComa and to evaluate the prognosis after different treatments. METHODS: Clinical and pathological data of 26 patients with hepatic PEComa were collected. All cases were analyzed by immunohistochemistry and clinical follow-up. RESULTS: This study included 17 females and 9 males, with a median age of 50 years. Lesions were located in the left hepatic lobe in 13 cases, in the right lobe in 11, and in the caudate lobe in 2. The median tumor diameter was 6.5 cm. Light microscopy revealed that the tumor cells were mainly composed of epithelioid cells. The cytoplasm contained heterogeneous eosinophilic granules. There were thick-walled blood vessels, around which tumor cells were radially arranged. Immunohistochemical analysis of pigment-derived and myogenic markers in PEComas revealed that 25 cases were HMB45 (+), 23 were Melan-A (+), and 22 SMA (+). TFE3 and Desmin were negative in all cases. All the fluorescence in situ hybridization samples were negative for TFE3 gene break-apart probe. Tumor tissues were collected by extended hepatic lobe resection or simple hepatic tumor resection as the main treatments. Median follow-up was 62.5 mo. None of the patients had metastasis or recurrence, and there were no deaths due to the disease. CONCLUSION: Hepatic PEComa highly expresses melanin and smooth muscle markers, and generally exhibits an inert biological behavior. The prognosis after extended hepatic lobe resection and simple hepatic tumor resection is semblable.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: As a non-classical ligand of Wnt, the abnormal regulation of Wnt5a contributes to the progression of malignant tumors; however, its effects differ depending on tumor type. Here, we evaluated the expression and significance of Wnt5a in endometrioid adenocarcinoma and its relationship with epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related proteins. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Immunohistochemical streptavidin-peroxidase method and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) method were used to analyze the expression and correlation of Wnt5a, and EMT-related protein ß-catenin, E-cadherin and enhancer of zeste homolog 2 (EZH2) in endometrial cancer tissues and cell samples of each group. RESULTS: The expression of Wnt5a and E-cadherin decreased in the following order, normal endometrium > atypical hyperplasia endometrium > endometrioid adenocarcinoma. In contrast, the expression of ß-catenin and EZH2 increased gradually. Moreover, Wnt5a expression was associated with the degree of tissue differentiation, International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage, and lymph node metastasis (all P<0.05). Wnt5a expression was also negatively correlated with ß-catenin and EZH2 expression and positively correlated with E-cadherin expression. RT-PCR results further indicated that E-cadherin mRNA expression was upregulated in a Wnt5a-overexpressing Ishikawa cell line compared to cells transfected with an empty vector or negative control cells (P<0.01). Furthermore, the expression of EZH2 and ß-catenin mRNA was downregulated in overexpressing cells compared to empty vector and negative control cells (P<0.01). CONCLUSION: Wnt5a may elicit a suppressive effect on endometrioid adenocarcinoma by inhibiting EMT. This study provides a theoretical basis for the pathological diagnosis and targeted therapy of endometrioid adenocarcinoma and extends our understanding of the Wnt5a signaling pathway.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Solid-pseudopapillary neoplasm (SPN) of the pancreas, a rare tumor, has low malignant potential. However, some patients develop metastasis and recurrence after resection, with aggressive biological behaviors. This study aimed to explore the features and risk factors associated with the aggressive biological behaviors of SPNs. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinicopathological and long-term follow-up data of 63 patients diagnosed with SPN at the First Affiliated Hospital of Bengbu Medical College between January 2007 and February 2019. RESULTS: Sixty-three patients presented atypical clinical symptoms. The median tumor size was 7.0 cm (range, 2.4-17 cm), and imaging features were solid and cystic or solid tumors with uneven density. Frequent and diffuse nuclear LEF1 protein expression (94.2%) was observed with LEF1 having a higher sensitivity and specificity. Overall survival significantly correlated with tumor size, Ki-67 index, and lymph node metastasis (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: SPN is a rare low-grade malignancy with a specific pseudopapillary structure. LEF1 is an effective biomarker of SPNs. Although SPNs generally display indolent biological behavior, a large tumor size, high proliferation index, and lymph node metastasis may be risk factors for the aggressive behavior and poor prognosis of SPN.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The incidence of mixed neuroendocrine-non-neuroendocrine neoplasms (MiNEN) is low. To improve our understanding of this rare tumor type and optimally guide clinical treatment, associated risk factors, clinical manifestations, and prognosis must be explored. AIM: To identify risk factors that influence the prognosis of patients with gastroenteropancreatic MiNEN (GEP-MiNEN). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 46 patients who were diagnosed with GEP-MiNEN at the First Affiliated Hospital of Bengbu Medical College (Anhui, China) between January 2013 and December 2017. Risk factors influencing the prognosis of the patients were assessed using Kaplan-Meier curves and cox regression models. We compared the results with 55 randomly selected patients with gastroenteropancreatic GEP neuroendocrine tumors, 47 with neuroendocrine carcinomas (NEC), and 58 with poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma. RESULTS: Among the 46 patients with GEP-MiNEN, thirty-five had gastric tumors, nine had intestinal tumors (four in the small intestine and five in the colon and rectum), and two had pancreatic tumors. The median age of the patients was 66 (41-84) years, and the male-to-female ratio was 2.83. Thirty-three (71.7%) patients had clinical stage III and IV cancers. Distant metastasis occurred in 14 patients, of which 13 had metastasis to the liver. The follow-up period was 11-72 mo, and the median overall survival was 30 mo. Ki-67 index ≥ 50%, high proportion of NEC, lymph node involvement, distant metastasis, and higher clinical stage were independent risk factors affecting the prognosis of patients with GEP-MiNEN. The median overall survival was shorter for patients with NEC than for those with MiNEN (14 mo vs 30 mo, P = 0.001), but did not significantly differ from those with poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma and MiNEN (30 mo vs 18 mo, P = 0.453). CONCLUSION: A poor prognosis is associated with rare, aggressive GEP-MiNEN. Ki-67 index, tumor composition, lymph node involvement, distant metastasis, and clinical stage are important factors for patient prognosis.

RESUMEN

Chelate induction of organic acids has been recognized to enhance metal uptake and translocation in plants, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. In this study, seedlings of Salix variegata were hydroponically exposed to the combinations of Cd (0 and 50 µM) and three exogenous organic acids (100 µM of citric, tartaric, or malic acid). Plant biomass, antioxidant enzymes, non-protein thiol compounds (NPT) content, and the expression of candidate genes associated with Cd accumulation and tolerance were determined. Results showed that Cd significantly inhibited plant biomass but stimulated the activity of antioxidant enzymes in the roots and leaves, while the lipid peroxidation increased as well. Respective addition of three organic acids greatly enhanced plant resistance to oxidative stress and reduced the lipid peroxidation induced by Cd, with the effect of malic acid showing greatest. The addition of organic acids also significantly increased the content of glutathione in the root, further improving the antioxidant capacity and potential of phytochelatin biosynthesis. Moreover, Cd induced the expression level of candidate genes in roots of S. variegata. The addition of three organic acids not only promoted the expression of candidate genes but also drastically increased Cd accumulation in S. variegata. In summary, application of citric, tartaric, or malic acid alleviated Cd-imposed toxicity through the boost of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants and candidate gene expression, while their effects on Cd tolerance and accumulation of S. variegata differed.

RESUMEN

Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EHE) is a rare medium-to-low-grade malignant vascular tumor characterized by vascular differentiation along with specific morphological and genetic alterations. Approximately 90% and 5% of EHE cases are associated with the WWTR1-CAMTA1 and YAP1/TFE3 fusion gene, respectively. Therefore, nuclear CAMTA1 protein expression is considered to be an effective marker for EHE diagnosis. However, the specificity and reliability of this approach have recently been put into question. The purpose of this study was to compare the detection of CAMTA1 expression in cases of EHE and histologic mimics using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and conventional protein immunohistochemistry via hematoxylin and eosin staining. Fifteen EHE and 37 histologic mimic samples were immunohistochemically stained with polyclonal anti-CAMTA1 antibody to evaluate the nuclear protein expression level of CAMTA1. In addition, 15 EHE samples and 10 vascular tumor samples were subjected to FISH to detect the WWTR1-CAMTA1 fusion gene. Histologically, EHE typically showed a mucous hyaline or cartilaginous stroma, often forming a primitive vascular lumen, and expressed vascular endothelial markers. Twelve of the 15 EHE samples showed positive nuclear CAMTA1 expression with immunohistochemistry, whereas six of the 37 histologic mimics showed positive nuclear expression. FISH detected a red-green signal fusion in 14 of the 15 cases of EHE, but in none of the 10 vascular tumors. These results indicate that CAMTA1 is an effective and useful EHE marker, but that FISH fusion gene detection has better diagnostic value and clinical significance.

RESUMEN

We studied the effects of three organic acids (citric acid, tartaric acid and malic acid) on the biomass, photosynthetic pigment content and photosynthetic parameters of Salix variegata under Cd stress and observed the ultrastructure of mesophyll cells in each treatment. Cd stress significantly reduced photosynthesis by reducing the content of pigments and disrupting chloroplast structure, which consequently decreased the biomass. However, respective addition of three organic acids greatly increased the biomass of S. variegata under Cd stress. Among them, the effect of malic acid or tartaric acid on shoot and total biomass accumulation was greater than that of citric acid. The alleviation of biomass probably related with the photosynthetic process. Results revealed that treatment with each organic acid enhanced the net photosynthesis rate under Cd stress. Malic acid promoted plant growth and biomass by increasing the chlorophyll content and mitigating damage to the photosynthetic apparatus resulting from Cd stress. Tartaric acid had little impact on the photosynthetic pigment content, but it was important in mitigating the ultrastructural damage of plants caused by Cd. Addition of citric acid significantly increased the carotenoid as well as the number and volume of chloroplasts in mesophyll cells, while the mitigation of structural damage in the photosynthetic apparatus was weaker than that in tartaric acid or malic acid treatment. It is concluded that application of tartaric acid or malic acid is effective in increasing the growth potential of S. variegata under Cd stress and thus can be a promising approach for the phytoremediation of Cd-contaminated soil.

RESUMEN

This work aims to study the roles and mechanisms of metformin in glioma cells stemness and epithelial-mesenchymal transition. Here, we found that metformin suppressed glioma cells spheroid formation and size, inhibited the expression of glioma stemness-related marker, CD133. Additionally, Metformin attenuated TGF-ß-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition in glioma cells. Mechanistically, metformin inhibited the nuclear abundance of YAP, a key effector of Hippo pathway, subsequently leading to its cytoplasmic retention, and thus reduced YAP transcriptional modulating activity. Importantly, overexpression of a mutant form of YAP (YAP-5SA) attenuated the inhibition of metformin on glioma cells stemness and epithelial-mesenchymal transition. Thus, metformin inhibits glioma cells stemness and epithelial-mesenchymal transition via regulating YAP activity.

RESUMEN

Hyperspectral remote sensing can be applied to the rapid and nondestructive monitoring of heavy-metal pollution in crops. To realize the rapid and real-time detection of cadmium in the edible part (fruit) of Capsicum annuum, the leaf spectral reflectance of plants exposed to different levels of cadmium stress was measured using hyperspectral remote sensing during four growth stages. The spectral indices or bands sensitive to cadmium stress were determined by correlation analysis, and hyperspectral estimation models for predicting the cadmium content in the fruit of C. annuum during the mature growth stage were established. The models were cross validated by taking the sensitive spectral indices in the bud stage and the sensitive spectral bands in the flowering stage as the input variables. The results indicated that cadmium accumulated in the leaves and fruit of C. annuum and leaf cadmium content in the three early growth stages were correlated with the cadmium content of the pepper in the mature stage. Leaf spectral reflectance was sensitive to cadmium stress, and the first derivative of the original spectral reflectance was strongly correlated with leaf cadmium content during all growth stages. Among the established models, the multiple regression model based on the sensitive spectral bands in the flowering stage was optimal for predicting fruit cadmium content of the pepper. This model provides a promising method to ensure food safety during the early growth stage of the plant.
