RESUMEN

Currently, there is a lack of knowledge regarding Aeromonas caviae meningitis. We report the first case of super-refractory status epilepticus (SRSE) in a woman with Aeromonas caviae meningitis. The case report demonstrates that this condition can lead to severe SRSE. Effective treatment for epilepsy is crucial for improving the prognosis for similar patients. According to Gomes et al.'s consensus protocol for SRSE, using a combination of up to one anesthetic drug and three non-anesthetic anti-epileptic drugs may be helpful and important in managing SRSE that is caused by Aeromonas caviae meningitis.

RESUMEN

The B chromosomes exhibit diverse behaviour compared with conventional genetic models. The capacity of the B chromosome either to accumulate or to be eliminated in a tissue-specific manner is dependent on biological processes related to aberrant cell division(s), but here yet remains compatible with normal development. We studied B chromosome elimination in Sorghum purpureosericeum embryos through cryo-sections and demonstrated the B chromosome instability during plant growth using flow cytometry, molecular markers and fluorescent in situ hybridization techniques. Consequently, using B chromosome-specific probes we revealed the non-Mendelian inheritance of B chromosomes in developing pollen. We disclosed that the occurrence of the B chromosome is specific to certain tissues or organs. The distribution pattern is mainly caused by an extensive elimination that functions primarily during embryo development and persists throughout plant development. Furthermore, we described that B chromosome accumulation can occur either by nondisjunction at first pollen mitosis (PMI) or the initiation of extra nuclear division(s) during pollen development. Our study demonstrates the existence of a not-yet-fully described B chromosome drive process, which is likely under the control of the B chromosome.

RESUMEN

Objective: While hypertension is a well-recognized risk factor for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), the specific roles of various common blood pressure measurements [diastolic blood pressure (DBP), systolic blood pressure (SBP), pulse pressure (PP), mean arterial pressure (MAP)] in detecting NAFLD and evaluating the associated risk in adults remain unclear. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 14,251 adult participants undergoing health screenings in the NAfld in the Gifu Area, Longitudinal Analysis project (NAGALA). Following the Z-transformation of the independent variables, we evaluated the relationships between the four blood pressure indices and NAFLD through multivariable logistic regression models. This analysis documented the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for each standard deviation (SD) increase. Additionally, the effectiveness of these indices in identifying NAFLD was comparatively analyzed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Results: After adequately adjusting for confounders, all blood pressure indices except PP showed a positive correlation with NAFLD. For each SD increment, MAP had the strongest association with NAFLD compared to SBP and DBP. This finding was confirmed in populations without exercise habits, under 60 years of age, with normal blood pressure, and in non-obese groups. Furthermore, based on ROC analysis, MAP was found to have the highest accuracy in identifying NAFLD compared to the other three blood pressure indices. Conclusion: Among the four blood pressure indices evaluated, MAP demonstrates the greatest efficacy in identifying NAFLD and assessing its associated risk. These findings underscore the potential of MAP as the most promising blood pressure index for screening NAFLD.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Liqi Tongbian is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) preparation that contains herbs that may treat slow transit constipation (STC). Atractylodes macrocephala, Astragalus membranaceus, Fructus aurantii, radish seed, uncooked Polygonum multiflorum, and Agastache rugosa were included in the formula for their unique qualities. The control of water transfer in the colon is greatly influenced by aquaporin 3 (AQP3). OBJECTIVES: Based on this, the Liqi Tongbian mixture was used to detect the concentrations of aquaporins (AQPs), 5-HT and nitrix oxide synthase 1 (NOS1) in STC rats, and explore its effect, in order to provide a theoretical basis for the remedy of STC with TCM. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Zhejiang University of Traditional Chinese Medicine provided 32 three-week-old Sprague Dawley rats of SPF-grade. The pairs licensed under SYXK (Zhejiang) 2021-0012 were kept at 20-25°C and humidity of 50-65%. The compound diphenoxylate caused constipation in the control, model, Liqi laxative (LQTB), and mosapride groups. The Liqi laxative rats were administered a mixture of traditional Chinese herbs after modeling, while mosapride was given to the other group. The levels of 5-HT, NOS1 and AQPs were tested in the feces and intestinal tissues. RESULTS: Comparing the condition of rat feces, it was found that the model group had significantly lower overall bulk, score and particles within 24 h compared to the control group. In comparison to mosapride, LQTB performed better. The model group had higher levels of 5-HT and NOS1 in intestinal tissue, while the LQTB and mosapride groups had decreased levels of these AQPs. LQTB had lower levels of AQP1, AQP3 and AQP4 than mosapride, while the model group had higher levels of these AQPs. CONCLUSIONS: Liqi Tongbian mixture works better than mosapride in improving constipation symptoms in rats with STC, and its mechanism is related to regulating the level of intestinal AQPs and neurotransmitters.

RESUMEN

Surface roughness prediction is a pivotal aspect of the manufacturing industry, as it directly influences product quality and process optimization. This study introduces a predictive model for surface roughness in the turning of complex-structured workpieces utilizing Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) informed by vibration signals. The model captures parameters from both the time and frequency domains of the turning tool, encompassing the mean, median, standard deviation (STD), and root mean square (RMS) values. The signal is from the time to frequency domain and it is executed using Welch's method complemented by time-frequency domain analysis employing three levels of Daubechies Wavelet Packet Transform (WPT). The selected features are then utilized as inputs for the GPR model to forecast surface roughness. Empirical evidence indicates that the GPR model can accurately predict the surface roughness of turned complex-structured workpieces. This predictive strategy has the potential to improve product quality, streamline manufacturing processes, and minimize waste within the industry.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Conventional endoscopic mucosal resection (cEMR), EMR with a transparent cap, EMR using a ligation device (EMR-L), EMR after circumferential precutting (EMR-P), and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) have been used for resecting rectal neuroendocrine tumors (r-NETs). However, there is no consensus regarding which is the best treatment. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of the aforementioned 5 techniques for resecting r-NETs by network meta-analysis. METHODS: Electronic databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Ovid Medline, and Web of Science) were systematically searched to include relevant studies published from inception to September 1, 2023. The en bloc resection rate, histologic complete resection rate, positive lateral margin rate, positive vertical margin rate, adverse events rate, and procedure time were compared. RESULTS: A total of 27 studies with a total of 2112 r-NETs were included, and the mean diameter of tumors was 6.24 mm. Pairwise meta-analysis showed that EMR-L and ESD had higher en bloc resection and histologic complete resection rates and lower positive vertical margin rate than those of cEMR in resecting r-NETs. Compared with ESD, EMR-L and EMR-P achieved similar resection rates and significantly shortened the procedure time without increasing adverse events. The network meta-analysis evaluated the surface under the cumulative ranking curves and revealed that EMR-L was the best modality for treating r-NETs considering the comprehensive results of the en bloc resection rate, histologic complete resection rate, positive lateral margin rate, positive vertical margin rate, adverse events rate, and procedure time. CONCLUSION: EMR-L should be recommended as the first-line endoscopic treatment for small r-NETs.

RESUMEN

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common chronic liver disease with increasing prevalence worldwide. NAFLD could develop from simple hepatic steatosis to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), NASH-related fibrosis, cirrhosis, and even hepatocellular carcinoma. However, the mechanism of NAFLD development has not yet been fully defined. Recently, emerging evidence shows that the dysregulated iron metabolism marked by elevated serum ferritin, and ferroptosis are involved in the NAFLD. Understanding iron metabolism and ferroptosis can shed light on the mechanisms of NAFLD development. Here, we summarized studies on iron metabolism and the ferroptosis process involved in NAFLD development to highlight potential medications and therapies for treating NAFLD.

RESUMEN

The growing global water crisis necessitates sustainable desalination solutions. Conventional desalination technologies predominantly confront environmental issues such as high emissions from fossil-fuel-driven processes and challenges in managing brine disposal during the operational stages, emphasizing the need for renewable and environmentally friendly alternatives. This study introduces and assesses a bioinspired, solar-driven osmosis desalination device emulating the natural processes of mangroves with effective contaminant rejection and notable productivity. The bioinspired solar-driven osmosis (BISO) device, integrating osmosis membranes, microporous absorbent paper, and nanoporous ceramic membranes, was evaluated under different conditions. We conducted experiments in both controlled and outdoor settings, simulating seawater with a 3.5 wt % NaCl solution. With a water yield of 1.51 kg m-2 h-1 under standard solar conditions (one sun), the BISO system maintained excellent salt removal and accumulation resistance after up to 8 h of experiments and demonstrated great cavitation resistance even at 58.14 °C. The outdoor test recorded a peak rate of 1.22 kg m-2 h-1 and collected 16.5 mL in 8 h, showing its practical application potential. These results highlight the BISO device's capability to address water scarcity using a sustainable approach, combining bioinspired design with solar power, presenting a viable pathway in renewable-energy-driven desalination technology.

RESUMEN

Hypertriglyceridemia-induced acute pancreatitis seldom occurs in the second trimester of pregnancy with gestational diabetes mellitus. For these patients, the existing knowledge on concomitant hyperglycemia is not sufficient. We report a case of abruptio placentae and epileptic seizure following perinatal hyperglycaemia in woman with gestational diabetes mellitus and hypertriglyceridemia-induced acute pancreatitis. The occurrence of abruptio placentae and epileptic seizure may be associated with concomitant hyperglycemia, and the epileptic seizure was terminated after she underwent treatment with insulin. We should pay more attention to the adverse effects of perinatal hyperglycemia and continue to give appropriate insulin treatment even if patients have passed the acute phase of hypertriglyceridemia-induced acute pancreatitis.

RESUMEN

In many species, the transmission of B chromosomes (Bs) does not follow the Mendelian laws of equal segregation and independent assortment. This deviation results in transmission rates of Bs higher than 0.5, a process known as "chromosome drive". Here, we studied the behavior of the 103 Mbp-large B chromosome of Festuca pratensis during all meiotic and mitotic stages of microsporogenesis. Mostly, the B chromosome of F. pratensis segregates during meiosis like standard A chromosomes (As). In some cases, the B passes through meiosis in a non-Mendelian segregation leading to their accumulation already in meiosis. However, a true drive of the B happens during the first pollen mitosis, by which the B preferentially migrates to the generative nucleus. During second pollen mitosis, B divides equally between the two sperms. Despite some differences in the frequency of drive between individuals with different numbers of Bs, at least 82% of drive was observed. Flow cytometry-based quantification of B-containing sperm nuclei agrees with the FISH data.

RESUMEN

Purpose: With the rapid social changes, psychological health problems among freshmen in universities have become increasingly serious. Many researchers have studied the psychological health status of college freshmen using quantitative methods. However, most researchers have studied the psychological health of college freshmen by treating variables as the central concept and analysis unit, which has limitations on the variable-centered research method. Therefore, this study aims to explore the impact of family economic status and demographic variables on the psychological health of college freshmen, as well as the potential types of psychological health among college freshmen. Methods: Based on the SCL-90 and the self-evaluation of the family economic status of college freshmen, latent profile analysis (LPA) was used to analyze the psychological health of 1497 college freshmen selected through a whole-group sampling method. Freshmen completed the questionnaire from October 18 to October 20, 2022. Then, multinomial logistic regression analysis and variance analysis were conducted using SPSS 25.0 to analyze the impact of family economic status and demographic variables on different psychological health subtypes of college freshmen from a university in Eastern China. Results: There is obvious heterogeneity in the psychological health of college freshmen, which can be divided into three groups: psychological health group (69.54%), psychological distress group (24.65%), and psychological risk group (5.81%). The latent categories of psychological health among college freshmen differ by gender and family economic status. The psychological health status of female students is significantly better than that of male students. In addition, the lower the self-evaluation of family economic status of college freshmen, the lower their psychological health level. Conclusion: Three categories of mental health exist for college freshmen, with significant group heterogeneity. Gender and family economic status significantly influenced mental health outcomes with female students faring better. The study's significance lies in providing useful recommendations for educational administrators and developing targeted interventions for college freshmen. Given the practical realities of mental health education efforts, personalized strategies that utilize peer support, counseling, and psychological services can be adopted to assist freshmen in acclimating to university life and maintaining mental wellness. The findings suggest considering the role of family economic status and gender in promoting mental health and the need for further research to develop comprehensive and effective interventions.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to determine the correlation between cognitive impairment and P300 event-related potential (ERP) in older adults with vertigo and imbalance, which further provides a reference for clinical diagnosis and patients' rehabilitation. METHODS: A total of 79 older adult patients with vertigo and imbalance in our outpatient department from January 2022 to December 2022 were selected and divided into the mild group (n = 20), moderate group (n = 39), and severe group (n = 20) according to the Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI). The auditory P300 component of event-related potentials (ERPs), Generalized Anxiety Disorder Questionnaire-7 (GAD-7), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) were used to evaluate depression, anxiety, and cognitive function in these patients, respectively. RESULTS: The P300 latencies of the different severity groups were 292 ± 10 ms, 301 ± 8 ms, and 328 ± 5 ms, respectively, and the differences were statistically significant (p = 0.010). The P300 amplitudes of the different severity groups were 14.4 ± 2.6 µV, 3.9 ± 0.8 µV, and 5.1 ± 1.4 µV, respectively, and the differences were also statistically significant (p = 0.004). There was no statistically significant difference in the DHI evaluation or VAS visual simulation scoring between the two groups (p = 0.625, and 0.878, respectively). Compared with the short-course group, the long-course group showed prolonged P300 latency and decreased amplitude, higher scores in PHQ-9 and GAD-7, and lower scores in MMSE, and all the differences were statistically significant (p = 0.013, 0.021, 0.006, 0.004, and 0.018, respectively). CONCLUSION: Older patients with more severe symptoms of vertigo and imbalance are at higher risk of developing abnormal cognitive function. The P300 can be used as an objective neurophysiological test for the assessment of cognitive function relevant to elderly patients with vertigo and imbalance.

RESUMEN

Objective: To investigate the associations between cognition, anxiety, depression, and residual dizziness after successful repositioning maneuvers in the elderly with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). Methods: We enrolled 40 elderly patients with BPPV in our outpatient department. We used the Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI), Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and Generalized Anxiety Disorder Questionnaire-7 (GAD-7) to assess the degree of dizziness, anxiety, and depression of participants before repositioning therapy, respectively. At the 1-week follow-up after BPPV treatment, each participant will be reassessed and divided into a group with residual dizziness (RD) and a group without residual dizziness (NRD) based on the follow-up DHI score. The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) evaluated the cognitive function of the participants. Results: The age, gender, duration of BPPV, and involved semicircular canals in the two groups did not show a significant difference. The RD group scored significantly higher on the DHI (p = 0.006), GAD-7 (p < 0.001), and PHQ-9 (p = 0.002) before the repositioning treatment than the NRD group. The two groups had no significant difference in MMSE score (p = 0.381). Anxiety and depression scores before repositioning treatment significantly and positively correlated with follow-up DHI scores (r = 0.678 and 0.522, respectively), but the MMSE score did not significantly relate to it. The univariate linear regression showed that the DHI (p < 0.001), GAD-7 (p < 0.001), and PHQ-9 (p = 0.002) scores before treatment could predict residual dizziness. The multivariate linear regression showed that GAD-7 before treatment was the only significant predictor of residual dizziness (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The level of dizziness, anxiety, and depression before treatment can predict residual dizziness after successful repositioning maneuvers in the elderly with BPPV. Anxiety may be the strongest predictor of residual dizziness after successful repositioning treatment in elderly BPPV patients.

RESUMEN

Background: The cause of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) remains unknown. It has been found that the functional status of the vestibular otolith is relevant to its prognosis; however, the evaluation of the vestibular otolith (intra-labyrinth) and superior and inferior vestibular nerve pathways (retro-labyrinth) in ISSNHL patients is not well-documented. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the functional status of the vestibular otolith and conductive pathway in patients with unilateral ISSNHL and analyze the correlations between vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) and hearing improvement after treatment. Methods: A total of 50 patients with unilateral ISSNHL underwent a battery of audio-vestibular evaluations, including pure tone audiometry, middle ear function, air-conducted sound-cervical VEMP (ACS-cVEMP), ACS-ocular VEMP (ACS-oVEMP), galvanic vestibular stimulation-cervical VEMP (GVS-cVEMP), and GVS-ocular VEMP (GVS-oVEMP). The results of auditory and VEMPs were retrospectively analyzed. Results: The abnormal rates of ACS-cVEMP, ACS-oVEMP, GVS-cVEMP, and GVS-oVEMP in affected ears were 30, 52, 8, and 16%, respectively. In affected ears, the abnormal rate of ACS-oVEMP was significantly higher than that of ACS-cVEMP (p = 0.025), while it was similar between GVS-cVEMP and GVS-oVEMP (p = 0.218). Compared with GVS-cVEMP, affected ears presented with a significantly higher abnormal rate of ACS-cVEMP (p = 0.005), and the abnormal rate of ACS-oVEMP was significantly higher than that of GVS-oVEMP (p < 0.001). No significant difference existed in latency and amplitude between affected and unaffected ears in ACS-VEMPs or GVS-VEMPs (p > 0.05). The abnormal rate of VEMPs in the poor recovery group was significantly higher than that of the good recovery group (p = 0.040). The abnormality percentages of ACS-oVEMP and GVS-oVEMP in the poor recovery group were significantly higher than that of the good recovery group (p = 0.004 and 0.039, respectively). The good hearing recovery rates were 76.47% in the normal VEMPs group, 58.33% in the intra-labyrinth lesion group, and 22.22% in the retro-labyrinth lesion group. Hearing recovery worsened as a greater number of abnormal VEMPs was presented. Conclusion: Besides Corti's organ, the impairment of otolithic organs was prominent in patients with ISSNHL. The normal VEMPs group had the highest rate of good recovery, followed by the intra-labyrinth lesion group and the retro-labyrinth lesion group presented with the lowest recovery rate. Abnormalities in ACS-oVEMP and/or GVS-oVEMP were indicators of a poor prognosis.

RESUMEN

The centromere is the chromosome region where microtubules attach during cell division. In contrast to monocentric chromosomes with one centromere, holocentric species usually distribute hundreds of centromere units along the entire chromatid. We assembled the chromosome-scale reference genome and analyzed the holocentromere and (epi)genome organization of the lilioid Chionographis japonica. Remarkably, each of its holocentric chromatids consists of only 7 to 11 evenly spaced megabase-sized centromere-specific histone H3-positive units. These units contain satellite arrays of 23 and 28 bp-long monomers capable of forming palindromic structures. Like monocentric species, C. japonica forms clustered centromeres in chromocenters at interphase. In addition, the large-scale eu- and heterochromatin arrangement differs between C. japonica and other known holocentric species. Finally, using polymer simulations, we model the formation of prometaphase line-like holocentromeres from interphase centromere clusters. Our findings broaden the knowledge about centromere diversity, showing that holocentricity is not restricted to species with numerous and small centromere units.

RESUMEN

The tuberculosis (TB) burden remains a significant global public health concern, especially in less developed countries. While pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) is the most common form of the disease, extrapulmonary tuberculosis, particularly intestinal TB (ITB), which is mostly secondary to PTB, is also a significant issue. With the development of sequencing technologies, recent studies have investigated the potential role of the gut microbiome in TB development. In this review, we summarized studies investigating the gut microbiome in both PTB and ITB patients (secondary to PTB) compared with healthy controls. Both PTB and ITB patients show reduced gut microbiome diversity characterized by reduced Firmicutes and elevated opportunistic pathogens colonization; Bacteroides and Prevotella were reported with opposite alteration in PTB and ITB patients. The alteration reported in TB patients may lead to a disequilibrium in metabolites such as short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production, which may recast the lung microbiome and immunity via the "gut-lung axis". These findings may also shed light on the colonization of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the gastrointestinal tract and the development of ITB in PTB patients. The findings highlight the crucial role of the gut microbiome in TB, particularly in ITB development, and suggest that probiotics and postbiotics might be useful supplements in shaping a balanced gut microbiome during TB treatment.

RESUMEN

Peer victimization is a serious risk factor for the development of problematic social media use (PSMU) among adolescents. However, little is known about the mediating and moderating mechanisms underlying this association. The current study tested whether psychological insecurity mediated the relation between peer victimization and PSMU, and whether this mediating process was moderated by family support among adolescents. A large sample of 1506 Chinese adolescents (Mage = 13.74 years, SD = 0.98) completed self-report measures regarding peer victimization, psychological insecurity, family support, and PSMU. After controlling for age, gender, and family economic status, results indicated that increased peer victimization was associated with higher psychological insecurity, which in turn predicted a greater incidence of PSMU. Moreover, family support moderated the first part of the mediation process, such that the relation between peer victimization and psychological insecurity was exacerbated for adolescents with high family support. This study advanced the current understanding of the mediating and moderating mechanisms associating peer victimization with PSMU among adolescents.

RESUMEN

Background: Dizziness in children, which could not be diagnosed at an early stage in the past, is becoming increasingly clear to a large extent. However, the recognition of the diagnosis and management remains discrepant and controversial due to their complicated and varied etiology. Central and peripheral vestibular disorders, psychogenic and systemic diseases, and genetic pathogeny constitute childhood etiological entities. Further understanding of the etiology and the prevalence of vertigo disorders is of crucial importance and benefit in the diagnosis and management of pediatric patients. Methods: This systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted by systematically searching Embase, PubMed, the Cochrane Library, CNIK, the Chinese Wan-Fang database, CBM, the Chinese VIP database, and the Web of Science for literature on childhood vertigo disorders published up to May 2022. The literature was evaluated under strict screening and diagnostic criteria. Their quality was assessed using the Agency for Healthcare and Research Quality (AHRQ) standards. The test for homogeneity was conducted to determine the fixed effects model or random-effect model employed. Results: Twenty-three retrospective cross-sectional studies involving 7,647 children with vertigo disorders were finally included, with an AHRQ score >4 (high or moderate quality). Our results demonstrated that peripheral vertigo (52.20%, 95% CI: 42.9-61.4%) was more common in children than central vertigo (28.7%, 95% CI: 20.8-37.4%), psychogenic vertigo (7.0%, 95% CI: 4.8-10.0%), and other systemic vertigo (4.7%, 95% CI: 2.6-8.2%). The five most common etiological diagnoses associated with peripheral vertigo included benign paroxysmal vertigo of childhood (BPVC) (19.50%, 95% CI: 13.5-28.3%), sinusitis-related diseases (10.7%, 95% CI: -11.2-32.6%), vestibular or semicircular canal dysfunction (9.20%, 95% CI: 5.7-15.0%), benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)(7.20%, 95% CI: 3.9-11.5%), and orthostatic dysregulation (6.8%, 95% CI: 3.4-13.0%). Vestibular migraine (20.3%, 95% CI: 15.4-25.2%) was the most seen etiological diagnosis associated with central vertigo in children. In addition, we found the sex-based difference influenced the outcome of psychogenic vertigo and vestibular migraine, while there was no significant difference in other categories of the etiology. For the management of vertigo, symptomatical management is the first choice for most types of vertigo disorder in pediatrics. Conclusion: Complex etiology and non-specific clinical manifestations of vertigo in pediatrics are challenging for their diagnoses. Reliable diagnosis and effective management depend on the close cooperation of multiple disciplines, combined with comprehensive consideration of the alternative characteristics of vertigo in children with growth and development.

RESUMEN

Background: Severe and profound idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) generally leads to unfavorable prognosis, and has a considerable impact on patient quality of life. However, related prognostic factors remain controversial. Objective: To elaborate the relationship between vestibular function impairment and the prognosis of patients with severe and profound ISSNHL, and investigated the relevant factors affecting prognosis. Methods: Forty-nine patients with severe and profound ISSNHL were divided into good outcome group [GO group, pure tone average (PTA) improvement > 30 dB] and poor outcome group (PO group, PTA improvement ≤ 30 dB) according to hearing outcomes. The clinical characteristics and the proportion of abnormal vestibular function tests in these two groups were analyzed by univariate analysis, and multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed for parameters with significant differences. Results: Forty-six patients had abnormal vestibular function test results (46/49, 93.88%). The number of vestibular organ injuries was 1.82 ± 1.29 in all patients, with higher mean numbers in PO group (2.22 ± 1.37) than in GO group (1.32 ± 0.99). Univariate analysis revealed no statistical differences between the GO and PO groups in terms of gender, age, side of the affected ear, vestibular symptoms, delayed treatment, instantaneous gain value of horizontal semicircular canal, regression gain value of vertical semicircular canal, abnormal rates of oVEMP, cVEMP, caloric test and vHIT in anterior and horizontal semicircular canal, however, significant differences were found in the initial hearing loss and abnormal vHIT of posterior semicircular canal (PSC). Multivariable analysis revealed that only PSC injury was an independent risk factor for predicting the prognosis of patients with severe and profound ISSNHL. Patients with abnormal PSC function had worse initial hearing impairment and prognosis than patients with normal PSC function. The sensitivity of abnormal PSC function in predicting poor prognosis in patients with severe and profound ISSNHL was 66.67%, specificity was 95.45%, and positive and negative likelihood ratios were 14.65 and 0.35, respectively. Conclusion: Abnormal PSC function is an independent risk factor for poor prognosis in patients with severe and profound ISSNHL. Ischemia in the branches of the internal auditory artery supplying the cochlea and PSC may be the underlying mechanism.
