RESUMEN

Encapsulating enzymes in metal-organic frameworks is a common practice to improve enzyme stability against harsh conditions. However, the synthesis of enzyme@MOFs has been primarily limited to small-scale laboratory settings, hampering their industrial applications. Spray drying is a scalable and cost-effective technology, which has been frequently used in industry for large-scale productions. Despite these advantages, its potential for encapsulating enzymes in MOFs remains largely unexplored, due to challenges such as nozzle clogging from MOF particle formation, utilization of toxic organic solvents, controlled release of encapsulated enzymes, and high temperatures that could compromise enzyme activity. Herein, we present a novel approach for preparing phytase@MIL-88 A using solvent-free spray drying. This involves atomizing two MOF precursor solutions separately using a three-fluid nozzle, with enzyme release controlled by manipulating defects within the MOFs. The physicochemical properties of the spray dried particles are characterized using X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Leveraging the efficiency and scalability of spray drying in industrial production, this scalable encapsulation technique holds considerable promise for broad industrial applications.

BACKGROUND: The growth of mitral leaflets (MLs) adaptive to left ventricluar (LV) remodeling has been observed. However, the elasticity of MLs upon mechanical stimuli would be supposed if it shrinks with LV reverse remodeling (LVRR). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patients with idiopathic recent-onset dilated cardiomyopathy (RODCM) (n = 82) and 50 matched normal controls (NC) were prospectively enrolled. Echocardiography was performed at baseline and 6 months of follow-up for the anterior and posterior mitral leaflet (AML and PML) length, mitral annular dimension (MAD), and tenting height (TH). LVRR was measured as a ≥ 15% reduction in LV end-diastolic volume (LVEDV). RESULTS: After 6 months, LVRR was achieved in 69.5% of patients. The AML (28 ± 3 vs. 26 ± 3 mm, p = 0.004) and PML (19 ± 4 vs. 17 ± 3 mm, p < 0.001) decreased in length, as well as the MAD (31 ± 5 vs. 28 ± 5 mm, p = 0.001) and TH (10 ± 3 vs. 8 ± 2 mm, p < 0.001). Compared with the NC group, the AML and PML of the RODCM group were 16.7% and 35.7% longer at baseline and remained 8.3% and 21.2% longer at follow-up, respectively. The change in AML or PML correlated moderately with that in LVEDV (r = 0.487, p < 0.001; r = 0.516, p < 0.001, respectively). The AML and PML length decreased in the LVRR (+) subgroup (AML, 28 ± 3 vs. 26 ± 3 mm, p = 0.001; PML, 20 ± 4 vs. 16 ± 3 mm, p < 0.001), but remained the same in the LVRR (-) subgroup (27 ± 4 vs. 28 ± 4 mm, p = 0.318; 17 ± 3 vs. 17 ± 3 mm, p = 0.790). CONCLUSIONS: Enlarged MLs could reverse accompanied by LV reverse remodeling. This study provided the other facet of ML plasticity adaptive to mechanical stretching.

GOLPH3 has been identified as an oncoprotein, playing a crucial role on progression and chemoresistancein of colon adenocarcinoma (COAD). However, it is still unclear the regulation of GOLPH3 expression at protein level. We discovered ubiquitin-specific proteases 6 (USP6) directly regulated the deubiquitination of the GOLPH3 protein and enhanced its stability in COAD. Overexpression of USP6 promoted COAD cell viability, inhibited apoptosis, and accelerated the growth of transplanted tumors growth in vitro and in vivo by deubiquitinating GOLPH3. Additionally, circCYFIP2 showed high expression levels in DDP-resistant colon cancer cells, promoting the cell proliferation. Mechanically, circCYFIP2 binds to both GOLPH3 protein and USP6, strengthening the interaction between GOLPH3 and USP6, and consequently induced DDP resistance in vitro and in vivo. In conclusion, USP6 operates as a deubiquitinase, targeting the GOLPH3 protein in COAD and enhancing its stability. Meanwhile, circCYFIP2 is crucial for the deubiquitination of GOLPH3 protein mediated by USP6 and acts as a scaffold to confer platinum resistance. The discovery of circCYFIP2/USP6/GOLPH3 pathway offers a potential target for overcoming chemoresistance in COAD.

Acute liver injury (ALI) refers to the damage to the liver cells of patients due to drugs, food, and diseases. In this work, we used a network pharmacology approach to analyze the relevant targets and pathways of the active ingredients in Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (CRP) for the treatment of ALI and conducted systematic validation through in vivo and in vitro experiments. The network pharmacologic results predicted that naringenin (NIN) was the main active component of CRP in the treatment of ALI. GO functional annotation and KEGG pathway enrichment showed that its mechanism may be related to the regulation of PPARA signaling pathway, PPARG signaling pathway, AKT1 signaling pathway, MAPK3 signaling pathway and other signaling pathways. The results of in vivo experiments showed that (NIN) could reduce the liver lesions, liver adipose lesions, hepatocyte injury and apoptosis in mice with APAP-induced ALI, and reduce the oxidative stress damage of mouse liver cells and the inflammation-related factors to regulate ALI. In vitro experiments showed that NIN could inhibit the proliferation, oxidative stress and inflammation of APAP-induced LO2 cells, promote APAP-induced apoptosis of LO2 cells, and regulate the expression of apoptotic genes in acute liver injury. Further studies showed that NIN inhibited APAP-induced ALI mainly by regulating the PPARA-dependent signaling pathway. In conclusion, this study provides a preliminary theoretical basis for the screening of active compounds in CRP for the prevention and treatment of ALI.

The pathogenesis of glioma has remained unclear. In this study, it was found that high expression of the outer dense fibers of sperm tail 3B (ODF3B) in gliomas was positively correlated with the grade of glioma. The higher the grade, the worse the prognosis. ODF3B is closely related to the growth and apoptosis of glioma. In terms of mechanism, ODF3B was found to affect the proliferation and apoptosis of glioma through the JAK1 and JAK2/STAT3 pathways. ODF3B was also found to affect the growth and apoptosis of glioma in vivo. We conclude that ODF3B affects glioma proliferation and apoptosis via the JAK/STAT pathway and is a potential therapeutic target.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the effect of diminished ovarian reserve (DOR) on the clinical outcomes and maternal and infant safety of in vitro fertilization/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF/ICSI) procedures in young women aged ≤ 35 years. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed to analyze the clinical data of 4,203 infertile women aged ≤ 35 years who underwent fresh embryo transfer (ET) in IVF/ICSI cycles. The data were collected from their initial visits to Fujian Maternity and Child Health Hospital between January 2015 and January 2022. Based on their ovarian reserve, the participants were categorized into two groups: DOR group (n = 1,027) and non-DOR group (n = 3,176). A propensity score matching (PSM) method was employed to ensure a relatively balanced distribution of covariates. The primary outcome assessed in this study was the live birth rate, while the secondary observation indicators included rates of high-quality embryo development, blastocyst formation, clinical pregnancy, and miscarriage, along with perinatal complications, neonatal birth weight, and the incidence of low birth weight (LBW). RESULTS: The DOR group showed notably lowered rates of blastocyst formation (59.8% vs. 64.1%), embryo implantation (29.8% vs.33.3%), clinical pregnancy (47.9% vs. 53.6%), and live birth (40.6% vs. 45.7%) compared to the non-DOR group (all P < 0.05). However, no statistically significant differences were observed in the high-quality embryo rate, miscarriage rate, perinatal complications, neonatal birth weight, or LBW incidence in infants between both groups (all P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: DOR has been found to reduce both clinical pregnancy and live birth rates in young females undergoing fresh ET in IVF/ICSI cycles. However, this reduction does not increase the risk of perinatal complications or LBW of infants through live birth cycles.

BACKGROUND: Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are predisposed to cardiovascular disease (CVD). Bone mineral density (BMD) is linked to CVD, but most studies focused on women. Our analysis aims to explore the association of BMD and fracture with the prevalence of CVD in men with T2DM. METHODS: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, 856 men with T2DM were enrolled. BMDs at the lumbar spine (L2-4), femoral neck (FN), and total hip (TH) were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). The CVD outcome was determined as the sum of the following conditions: congestive heart failure, coronary heart disease, angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, the requirement for coronary artery revascularization, and stroke. The relationship between BMDs and CVD was investigated by restricted cubic spline curves and logistic regression models. RESULTS: A total of 163 (19.0%) patients developed CVD. The restricted cubic spline curve revealed a linear and negative association between FN-BMD, TH-BMD, and CVD. After full adjustments for confounding covariates, the odds ratios were 1.34 (95% confidence interval [CI] [1.11-1.61], p < .05), 1.3 (95% CI [1.05-1.60], p < .05), and 1.26 (95% CI [1.02-1.55], p < .05) for each 1-SD decrease in BMDs of L2-4, FN and TH, respectively. T-scores of < -1 for BMD of L2-4 and FN were independently associated with CVD (p < .05). Subgroup analyses further supported our findings. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of CVD was inversely correlated with BMD levels in men with T2DM, particularly at the FN. We hypothesized that monitoring FN-BMD and early intervention would help reduce CVD risk in men with T2DM, especially those with hypertension.

Acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI) is a clinically significant vascular and gastrointestinal condition, which is closely related to the blood supply of the small intestine. Unfortunately, it is still challenging to properly discriminate small intestinal tissues with different degrees of ischemia. In this study, hyperspectral imaging (HSI) was used to construct pseudo-color images of oxygen saturation about small intestinal tissues and to discriminate different degrees of ischemia. First, several small intestine tissue models of New Zealand white rabbits were prepared and collected their hyperspectral data. Then, a set of isosbestic points were used to linearly transform the measurement data twice to match the reference spectra of oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin, respectively. The oxygen saturation was measured at the characteristic peak band of oxyhemoglobin (560 nm). Ultimately, using the oxygenated hemoglobin reflectance spectrum as the benchmark, we obtained the relative amount of median oxygen saturation in normal tissues was 70.0 %, the IQR was 10.1 %, the relative amount of median oxygen saturation in ischemic tissues was 49.6 %, and the IQR was 14.6 %. The results demonstrate that HSI combined with the oxygen saturation computation method can efficiently differentiate between normal and ischemic regions of the small intestinal tissues. This technique provides a powerful support for internist to discriminate small bowel tissues with different degrees of ischemia, and also provides a new way of thinking for the diagnosis of AMI.

Oncolytic bacteria can trigger innate immune activity. However, the antitumour efficacy of inactivated bacteria is poor, and attenuated live bacteria pose substantial safety risks. Here we show that intratumourally injected paraformaldehyde-fixed bacteria coated with manganese dioxide potently activate innate immune activity, modulate the immunosuppressive tumour microenvironment and trigger tumour-specific immune responses and abscopal antitumour responses. A single intratumoural administration of mineralized Salmonella typhimurium suppressed the growth of multiple types of subcutaneous and orthotopic tumours in mice, rabbits and tree shrews and protected the cured animals against tumour rechallenge. We also show that mineralized bacteria can be administered via arterial embolization to treat orthotopic liver cancer in rabbits. Our findings support the further translational testing of oncolytic mineralized bacteria as potent and safe antitumour immunotherapeutics.

Introduction: Ovarian cancer (OV) is a highly lethal gynecological malignancy with a poor prognosis. Lactate metabolism is crucial for tumor cell survival, proliferation, and immune evasion. Our study aims to investigate the role of lactate metabolism-related genes (LMRGs) in OV and their potential as biomarkers for prognosis, immune microenvironment, and immunotherapy response. Methods: Ovarian samples were collected from the TCGA cohort. And 12 lactate-related pathways were identified from the MsigDB database. Differentially expressed genes within these pathways were designated as LMRGs, which undergo unsupervised clustering to identify distinct clusters based on LMRGs. Subsequently, we assessed survival outcomes, immune cell infiltration levels, Hallmaker pathway activation patterns, and chemotaxis among different subtypes. After conducting additional unsupervised clustering based on differentially expressed genes (DEGs), significant differences in the expression of LMRGs between the two clusters were observed. The differentially expressed genes were subjected to subsequent functional enrichment analysis. Furthermore, we construct a model incorporating LMRGs. Subsequently, the lactate score for each tumor sample was calculated based on this model, facilitating the classification of samples into high and low groups according to their respective lactate scores. Distinct groups examined disparities in survival prognosis, copy number variation (CNV), single nucleotide variation (SNV), and immune infiltration. The lactate score served as a quantitative measure of OV's lactate metabolism pattern and an independent prognostic factor. Results: This study investigated the potential role of LMRGs in tumor microenvironment diversity and prognosis in OV, suggesting that LMRGs play a crucial role in OV progression and the tumor microenvironment, thus serving as novel indicators for prognosis, immune microenvironment status, and response to immunotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Calibration transfer is an essential activity in analytical chemistry in order to avoid a complete recalibration. Currently, the most popular calibration transfer methods, such as piecewise direct standardization and dynamic orthogonal projection, require a certain amount of standard or reference samples to guarantee their effectiveness. To achieve higher efficiency, it is desirable to perform the transfer with as few reference samples as possible. RESULTS: To this end, we propose a new calibration transfer method by using a calibration database from a master instrument (source domain) and only one spectrum with known properties from a slave instrument (target domain). We first generate a counterpart of this spectrum in the source domain by a multivariate Gaussian kernel. Then, we train a filter to make the response function of the slave instrument equivalent to that of the master instrument. To avoid the need for labels from the target domain, we also propose an unsupervised way to implement our method. Compared with several state-of-the-art methods, the results on one simulated dataset and two real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. SIGNIFICANCE: Traditionally, the demand for certain amounts of reference samples during calibration transfer is cumbersome. Our approach, which requires only one reference sample, makes the transfer process simple and fast. In addition, we provide an alternative for performing unsupervised calibration transfer. As such, the proposed method is a promising tool for calibration transfer.

Background: Serum anion gap (AG) has been proven to be associated with prognosis in critically ill patients. However, few studies have investigated the association between AG and all-cause mortality in critically ill patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Objective: We hypothesized that the initial AG level would predict the mortality risk in critically ill patients with COPD. Methods: This retrospective cohort study was based on the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC) IV database. We extracted demographics, vital signs, laboratory tests, comorbidity, and scoring systems from the first 24 hours after patient ICU admission. Multivariable logistic regression analysis models were used to explore the association between serum AG levels and mortality. Interaction and stratified analyses were conducted including age, gender and comorbidity. Results: A total of 5531 critically ill patients with COPD were enrolled, composed of 53.6% male and 46.4% female with a median age of 73 years. The all-cause mortality of these patients during ICU hospitalization was 13.7%. The risk of all-cause mortality increased as the AG level increased in the univariate logistic regression analysis (OR=1.13, 95% CI: 1.11-1.15, p<0.01). After adjusting for all the covariates in multivariate logistic regression analysis, the odds ratio was 1.06 (95% CI: 1.04-1.09, p<0.01). Compared with the lowest AG group Q1 (≤11mmol/L), the adjusted OR value for AG and mortality in Q2 (12-13mmol/L) was 0.89 (95% CI: 0.63-1.25, p=0.502), Q3 (14-15mmol/L) was 0.95 (95% CI: 0.68-1.34, p=0.788), and Q4 (≥16mmol/L) was 1.49 (95% CI: 1.10-2.02, p=0.009) respectively. In addition, the results of the subgroup and stratified analyses were robust. Conclusion: AG is positively related to all-cause mortality in critically ill patients with COPD.

The near-infrared spectroscopy is often used to distinguish small bowel necrosis due to necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). The characteristic bands of small bowel necrosis, as an important basis for evaluating the confidence of the differentiation results, are challenging to identify quickly. In this study, we proposed to identify characteristic bands of lesion samples based on hyperspectral imaging (HSI) and cellwise outlier detection. Rabbits were used as an animal model to simulate the clinical symptoms of NEC. The rabbits were detected at intervals of 10, 30, 60, and 90 min. The characteristic bands were identified within the same rabbit, between different rabbits and at different times. The result showed the bands near 763 nm, corresponding to the absorption peak of deoxyhemoglobin, were the characteristic bands separating samples with NEC. The identification result was plausible because hypoxia was the main cause of NEC. The method was easy to perform.

Background: The incidence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) is increasing worldwide. Hemodialysis (HD) is the mainstay of renal replacement therapy for patients with ESKD. Risk factors associated with late arteriovenous fistula (AVF) failure in HD patients are poorly investigated. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify factors associated with late AVF failure in HD patients. Methods: Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) who underwent forearm or upper arm AVF angioplasty at Second Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University between September 2009 and August 2018 were included. Patients were followed up for 36 months. Baseline characteristics were collected using electronic medical records (EMRs). Variables associated with late AVF failure were identified using Cox proportional hazards models. Results: There were 137 patients (64% male, 36% female) included in this study, with 50 (36.5%) experiencing AVF failure. Univariable log-rank analysis showed that age, C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH), albumin (ALB), and AVF patency rate were significantly different between patients who did and did not experience AVF failure. Cox regression analysis showed that CRP [P=0.002, hazard ratio (HR) =2.719, 95% confidence interval (CI) for HR: 1.432-5.164], ESR (P=0.030, HR =2.431, 95% CI: 1.088-5.434), iPTH (P=0.013, HR =0.325, 95% CI: 0.133-0.793), and ALB (P=0.040, HR =0.539, 95% CI: 0.299-0.972) were independently associated with AVF failure. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that the cumulative patency rates of AVF at 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, and 36 months were 84%, 74%, 69%, 64%, 64%, and 64%, respectively. Conclusions: CRP, ESR, iPTH, and ALB were associated with AVF failure and should be used as reference in clinical practice.

The supplementation of antimicrobial growth promoters (AGPs) has been banned in many countries because of the emergence of antimicrobial-resistant pathogens in poultry products and the environment. Probiotics have been broadly studied and demonstrated as a promising AGP substitute. Our study is centred on the effects of a multi-strain Bacillus-based probiotic product on broiler production performance and gut microbial profile in a dexamethasone-induced leaky gut challenge. Two hundred and fifty-six broiler chicks were hatched and randomly assigned into four groups (wheat-soybean meal basal diet (BD) = non-supplemented control (C), BD supplemented with dexamethasone in week 4 (CD), BD containing a probiotic from day one (P), and BD containing a probiotic from day one and supplemented with dexamethasone during challenge week 4 (PD)). The production performance and caecal, gizzard, jejunal lumen and jejunal mucosa swab microbiota were studied by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The Bacillus probiotic product significantly improved production performance and altered caecal gut microbiota (p ≤ 0.05), but no significant impact on microbiota was observed in other gut sections.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the prevalence of obesity and metabolic syndrome in type 1 diabetes (T1DM) patients has gradually increased. Insulin resistance in T1DM deserves attention. It is necessary to clarify the relationship between body composition, metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance in T1DM to guide clinical treatment and intervention. AIM: To assess body composition (BC) in T1DM patients and evaluate the relationship between BC, metabolic syndrome (MS), and insulin resistance in these indi-viduals. METHODS: A total of 101 subjects with T1DM, aged 10 years or older, and with a disease duration of over 1 year were included. Bioelectrical impedance analysis using the Tsinghua-Tongfang BC Analyzer BCA-1B was employed to measure various BC parameters. Clinical and laboratory data were collected, and insulin resistance was calculated using the estimated glucose disposal rate (eGDR). RESULTS: MS was diagnosed in 16/101 patients (15.84%), overweight in 16/101 patients (15.84%), obesity in 4/101 (3.96%), hypertension in 34/101 (33.66%%) and dyslipidemia in 16/101 patients (15.84%). Visceral fat index (VFI) and trunk fat mass were significantly and negatively correlated with eGDR (both P < 0.001). Female patients exhibited higher body fat percentage and visceral fat ratio compared to male patients. Binary logistic regression analysis revealed that significant factors for MS included eGDR [P = 0.017, odds ratio (OR) = 0.109], VFI (P = 0.030, OR = 3.529), and a family history of diabetes (P = 0.004, OR = 0.228). Significant factors for hypertension included eGDR (P < 0.001, OR = 0.488) and skeletal muscle mass (P = 0.003, OR = 1.111). Significant factors for dyslipidemia included trunk fat mass (P = 0.033, OR = 1.202) and eGDR (P = 0.037, OR = 0.708). CONCLUSION: Visceral fat was found to be a superior predictor of MS compared to conventional measures such as body mass index and waist-to-hip ratio in Chinese individuals with T1DM. BC analysis, specifically identifying visceral fat (trunk fat), may play an important role in identifying the increased risk of MS in non-obese patients with T1DM.

CONTEXT: Both assisted reproductive technology (ART) and obesity are associated with adverse cardiometabolic alterations in offspring. However, the combined effects of paternal obesity and ART on offspring cardiometabolic health are still unclear. OBJECTIVE: To clarify cardiometabolic changes in offspring of obese fathers conceived using ART. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study conducted between June 2014 and October 2019. SETTING: Center for reproductive medicine. PATIENTS: A total of 2890 singleton visits aged 4-10 years were followed. INTERVENTION(S): None. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Age-and sex-specific z-score of body mass index(BMI), blood pressure, insulin resistance and lipid profile were examined. RESULTS: We observed a strong association between paternal BMI categories and offspring BMI, blood pressure, and insulin resistance. Compared to offspring of fathers with normal weight, multivariable-adjusted mean difference for BMI z-score were 0.53 (95%CI: 0.37-0.68) for obese fathers, 0.17 (95%CI: 0.05-0.30) for overweight fathers, and -0.55 (95%CI: -0.95--0.15) for underweight fathers; corresponding values for systolic blood pressure z-score were 0.21(95%CI: 0.07-0.35), 0.10 (95%CI: -0.01-0.21), and -0.24 (95%CI: -0.59-0.11), and corresponding values for HOMA-IR z-score were 0.31(95%CI: 0.16-0.46), 0.09(95%CI: -0.02-0.21), and -0.11 (95%CI: -0.48-0.28), respectively. The mediation analyses suggested that 57.48% to 94.75% of the associations among paternal obesity and offspring cardiometabolic alterations might be mediated by offspring BMI. CONCLUSIONS: Paternal obesity was associated with an unfavourable cardiometabolic profile in ART-conceived offspring. Mediation analyses indicated that offspring BMI was a possible mediator of the association between paternal obesity and the offspring impaired metabolic changes.

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to investigate the effects of male hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection on male fertility, embryonic development, and in vitro fertilization/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF/ICSI) outcomes. We performed a retrospective cohort study that included 3965 infertile couples who received fresh embryo transfer cycles for the first time at the Fujian Maternity and Child Health Hospital (Fuzhou, China) from January 2018 to January 2021. Infertile couples were categorized based on their HBV infection status into the HBV group (HBV-positive men and HBV-negative women) and the control group (HBV-negative couples). A 1:1 propensity score matching was performed with relatively balanced covariates. Baseline characteristics, semen parameters, laboratory outcomes, clinical outcomes, and obstetric and neonatal outcomes were compared between groups. After propensity score matching, 821 couples were included in each group. Both groups had similar semen parameters and obstetric and neonatal outcomes. The HBV group showed a significantly lower live birth rate than the control group (P < 0.05). The HBV group had a significantly higher abortion rate than the control group (P < 0.05). The rates of high-quality embryos and blastocyst formation were significantly lower in the HBV group than those in the control group (both P < 0.05). In conclusion, in couples who undergo IVF/ICSI, male HBV infection reduces the live birth rate and increases the risk of miscarriage. However, the incidence of low birth weight in women with IVF/ICSI does not increase with male HBV infection.

Most research on immobilized microorganisms employs biomass charcoal as a carrier, but limited studies explore coal-based resources for microbial immobilization. Herein, lead-resistant functional strains were immobilized using weathered coal as a carrier, resulting in the development of a weathered coal-immobilized microbial material (JK-BW) exhibiting high efficiency in lead removal from solutions. A quadratic polynomial model for the adsorption capacity and adsorption rate of JK-BW on Pb2+ was developed using the Box-Behnken method to determine the optimal adsorption conditions. The Pb2+ adsorption mechanism of JK-BW was studied through batch adsorption and desorption experiments along with SEM-EDS, BET, FT-IR, and XPS analyses. Findings indicated that optimal conditions were identified at 306 K temperature, 0.36 g/L adsorbent dosage, and 300 mg/L initial solution concentration, achieving a peak adsorption performance of 338.9 mg/g (308 K) for the immobilized material, surpassing free cell adsorption by 3.8 times. Even after four cycles of repeated use, the material maintained its high adsorption capacity. Pb2+ adsorption by JK-BW involved monolayer chemisorption with ion exchange, complexation, precipitation, physical adsorption, and microbial intracellular phagocytosis. Ion exchange accounted for 22-42% and complexation accounted for 39-57% of the total adsorption mechanisms, notably involving exchanges with K, Ca, Na, and Mg ions as well as complexation with -OH, -COOH, CO-OH, -COOH, CO-, NH2, and the ß-ring of pyridine for Pb2+ adsorption.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is recognized as the most prevalent endocrine disorder among women of reproductive age. While the utilization of assisted reproductive technology (ART) has resulted in favorable outcomes for infertility treatment in PCOS patients, the inherent pathophysiological features of the condition give rise to complications and consequences during pregnancy and delivery for both the mother and offspring. This study was to assess the correlation between maternal PCOS and various pregnancy complications and neonatal outcomes undergone ART. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted on PubMed, EmBase, and the Cochrane Library to identify observational studies that investigated the association between PCOS and the risk of various pregnancy complications and neonatal outcomes, including gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), hypertension in pregnancy (PIH), preeclampsia (PE), preterm birth, abortion, congenital malformations (CA), small for gestational age (SGA), large for gestational age (LGA), low birth weight (LBW), macrosomia, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission and birth weight. Eligible studies were selected based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The meta-analysis was conducted using Review Manager and Stata software, with odds ratios (ORs) or mean difference (MD), confidence intervals (CIs), and heterogeneity (I2) being calculated. The search was conducted up to March 2023. RESULTS: A total of 33 studies with a combined sample size of 92,810 participants were identified. The findings indicate that PCOS is significantly associated with an increased risk of GDM (OR 1.51, 95% CI:1.17-1.94), PIH (OR 1.72, 95% CI:1.25-2.39), PE (OR 2.12, 95% CI:1.49-3.02), preterm birth (OR 1.29, 95% CI:1.21-1.39), and LBW (OR 1.29, 95% CI:1.14-1.47). In subgroup analyses, the risks of GDM (OR 1.80, 95% CI:1.23-2.62) and abortion (OR 1.41, 95% CI:1.08-1.84) were elevated in fresh embryo transferred (ET) subgroup, whereas elevated risk of PE (OR 1.82, 95% CI:1.17-2.83) and preterm birth (OR 1.31, 95% CI:1.21-1.42) was identified in frozen ET subgroup. Whatever with or without hyperandrogenism, patients with PCOS had a higher risk in preterm birth (OR 1.69, 95% CI: 1.31-2.18; OR 1.24, 95% CI:1.02-1.50) and abortion (OR 1.38, 95% CI:1.12-1.71; OR 1.23, 95% CI:1.06-1.43). CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that individuals with PCOS undergone ART are at a notably elevated risk for experiencing pregnancy complications and unfavorable neonatal outcomes. Nevertheless, to establish a definitive association between PCOS and pregnancy-related outcomes, it is necessary to conduct extensive prospective, blinded cohort studies and effectively control for confounding variables.
