Background: Maternal exposure to inflammation is one of the causes of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve exerts a neuroprotective effect via its anti-inflammatory action. We thus investigated whether transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) can enhance social abilities in a mouse model of ASD induced by maternal immune activation (MIA). Methods: ASD mouse model were constructed by intraperitoneal injection of polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid (poly (I:C)). TaVNS with different parameters were tested in ASD mouse model and in C57BL/6 mice, then various behavioral tests and biochemical analyses related to autism were conducted. ASD model mice were injected with an interleukin (IL)-17a antibody into the brain, followed by behavioral testing and biochemical analyses. Results: TaVNS reduced anxiety, improved social function, decreased the number of microglia, and inhibited M1 polarization of microglia. Additionally, taVNS attenuated the expression of the IL-17a protein in the prefrontal cortex and blood of ASD model mice. To examine the possible involvement of IL-17a in taVNS-induced neuroprotection, we injected an IL-17a antibody into the prefrontal cortex of ASD model mice and found that neutralizing IL-17a decreased the number of microglia and inhibited M1 polarization. Furthermore, neutralizing IL-17a improved social function in autism model mice. Conclusion: Our study revealed that reduced neuroinflammation is an important mechanism of taVNS-mediated social improvement and neuroprotection against autism. This effect of taVNS could be attributed to the inhibition of the IL-17a pathway.

Abnormal speech prosody has been widely reported in individuals with autism. Many studies on children and adults with autism spectrum disorder speaking a non-tonal language showed deficits in using prosodic cues to mark focus. However, focus marking by autistic children speaking a tonal language is rarely examined. Cantonese-speaking children may face additional difficulties because tonal languages require them to use prosodic cues to achieve multiple functions simultaneously such as lexical contrasting and focus marking. This study bridges this research gap by acoustically evaluating the use of Cantonese speech prosody to mark information structure by Cantonese-speaking children with and without autism spectrum disorder. We designed speech production tasks to elicit natural broad and narrow focus production among these children in sentences with different tone combinations. Acoustic correlates of prosodic focus marking like f0, duration and intensity of each syllable were analyzed to examine the effect of participant group, focus condition and lexical tones. Our results showed differences in focus marking patterns between Cantonese-speaking children with and without autism spectrum disorder. The autistic children not only showed insufficient on-focus expansion in terms of f0 range and duration when marking focus, but also produced less distinctive tone shapes in general. There was no evidence that the prosodic complexity (i.e. sentences with single tones or combinations of tones) significantly affected focus marking in these autistic children and their typically-developing (TD) peers.

As a part of the overall information-processing system of the brain, postural control is related to the cognitive processes of working memory. Previous studies have suggested that cognitive tasks and postural control processes can compete for resources in common brain areas, although there is an "inverted U" relationship between arousal level and behavioral control - the arousal level of individuals changes when performing cognitive tasks. However, the exact neural connections between the two are unclear. This may be related to the nature of cognitive tasks. Some studies believe that posture occupies not only spatial information processing resources but also visual non-spatial information processing resources. Other studies believe that posture control only occupies spatial information processing resources in the central system, but does not occupy non-spatial information processing resources. Previous studies used different cognitive task materials and reached different conclusions. In this study, we used the same visuospatial and non-spatial materials, the n-back visual working memory paradigm, the event-related potential technique to investigate the effects of visuospatial and non-spatial working memory tasks on adolescents' postural control under different cognitive loads. The results of this study showed that in both visuospatial and non-spatial conditions, the N1 effect of the parieto-occipital lobe was larger during upright posture than in the sitting position (160-180 ms), the P300 effect of the central parieto-occipital region (280-460 ms) was induced by working memory in different postures, and the P300 wave amplitude was higher in the sitting position than in the upright position. We demonstrated that upright postural control enhances early selective attention but interferes with central memory encoding, thus confirming that postural control and visuospatial and non-spatial working memory share brain regions and compete with each other.

Valproic acid (VPA) is a primary medication for epilepsy, yet its hepatotoxicity consistently raises concerns among individuals. This study aims to establish an automated machine learning (autoML) model for forecasting the risk of abnormal increase of transaminase levels while undergoing VPA therapy for 1995 epilepsy patients. The study employed the two-tailed T test, Chi-square test, and binary logistic regression analysis, selecting six clinical parameters, including age, stature, leukocyte count, Total Bilirubin, oral dosage of VPA, and VPA concentration. These variables were used to build a risk prediction model using "H2O" autoML platform, achieving the best performance (AUC training = 0.855, AUC test = 0.789) in the training and testing data set. The model also exhibited robust accuracy (AUC valid = 0.742) in an external validation set, underscoring its credibility in anticipating VPA-induced transaminase abnormalities. The significance of the six variables was elucidated through importance ranking, partial dependence, and the TreeSHAP algorithm. This novel model offers enhanced versatility and explicability, rendering it suitable for clinicians seeking to refine parameter adjustments and address imbalanced data sets, thereby bolstering classification precision. To summarize, the personalized prediction model for VPA-treated epilepsy, established with an autoML model, displayed commendable predictive capability, furnishing clinicians with valuable insights for fostering pharmacovigilance.

Background: The intricate regulatory relationship between mitochondrial dysfunction, apoptosis, and immune cells remains largely elusive following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Methods: The GSE45997 dataset from the Gene Expression Omnibus database and utilized GEO2R to screen for differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Functional enrichment analyses were performed. Mitochondrial gene data from the MitoCarta3.0 database were combined with the DEGs to identify mitochondria-related DEGs (MitoDEGs). The hub MitoDEGs related to apoptosis were further screened. Animal models of TBI were established to investigate the mechanisms underlying mitochondrial dysfunction regulation of apoptosis. Furthermore, we explored the relationship between MitoDEGs/hub MitoDEGs and immune cells using the Spearman correlation method. Results: Fifty-seven MitoDEGs were significantly enriched in pathways related to fatty acid degradation and metabolism. We identified three upregulated hub MitoDEGs, namely Dnm1l, Mcl1 and Casp3, were associated with apoptosis. In the animal experiments, we observed significant expression levels of microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 beta (LC3B) surrounding the injury site. Most LC3B-expressing cells exhibited positive staining for Beclin 1 and colocalization analysis revealed the simultaneous presence of Beclin 1 and caspase-3. The Western blot analysis further unveiled a significant upregulation of cleaved caspase-3 levels and LC3B II/LC3B I ratio after TBI. Moreover, the quantity of myeloid cell leukaemia-1 immunoreactive cells was notably higher than that in the control group. Spearman correlation analysis demonstrated strong associations between plasma cells, marginal zone B cells, native CD4 T cells, monocytes, and MitoDEGs/hub MitoDEGs. Conclusions: This study sheds light on enhanced fatty acid metabolism following mitochondrial dysfunction and its potential association with apoptosis and immune cell activation, thereby providing new mechanistic insights into the acute phase of TBI.

BACKGROUND: This meta-analysis aimed to explore the most robust findings across numerous existing resting-state functional imaging and voxel-based morphometry (VBM) studies on the functional and structural brain alterations in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). METHODS: A whole-brain voxel-wise meta-analysis was conducted to compare the differences in the intrinsic functional activity and gray matter volume (GMV) between individuals with ASD and typically developing individuals (TDs) using Seed-based d Mapping software. RESULTS: A total of 23 functional imaging studies (786 ASD, 710 TDs) and 52 VBM studies (1728 ASD, 1747 TDs) were included. Compared with TDs, individuals with ASD displayed resting-state functional decreases in the left insula (extending to left superior temporal gyrus [STG]), bilateral anterior cingulate cortex/medial prefrontal cortex (ACC/mPFC), left angular gyrus and right inferior temporal gyrus, as well as increases in the right supplementary motor area and precuneus. For VBM meta-analysis, individuals with ASD displayed decreased GMV in the ACC/mPFC and left cerebellum, and increased GMV in the left middle temporal gyrus (extending to the left insula and STG), bilateral olfactory cortex, and right precentral gyrus. Further, individuals with ASD displayed decreased resting-state functional activity and increased GMV in the left insula after overlapping the functional and structural differences. CONCLUSIONS: The present multimodal meta-analysis demonstrated that ASD exhibited similar alterations in both function and structure of the insula and ACC/mPFC, and functional or structural alterations in the default mode network (DMN), primary motor and sensory regions. These findings contribute to further understanding of the pathophysiology of ASD.

Both the hippocampal and striatal systems participate in motor sequence learning (MSL) in healthy subjects, and the prominent role of the hippocampal system in sleep-related consolidation has been demonstrated. However, some pathological states may change the functional dominance between these two systems in MSL consolidation. To better understand the functional performance within these two systems under the pathological condition of hippocampal impairment, we compared the functional differences after consolidation between patients with left medial temporal lobe epilepsy (LmTLE) and healthy control subjects (HCs). We assessed participants' performance on the finger-tapping task (FTT) during acquisition (on day 1) and after consolidation during sleep (on day 2). All participants underwent an MRI scan (T1 and resting state) before each FTT. We found that the LmTLE group showed performance deficits in offline consolidation compared to the HC group. The LmTLE group exhibited structural changes, such as decreased gray matter volume (GMV) in the left hippocampus and increased GMV in the right putamen (striatum). Our results also revealed that whereas the main effect of consolidation was observed in the hippocampus-related functional connection in the HC group, it was only evident in the striatum-related functional loop in the LmTLE group. Our findings indicated that LmTLE patients may rely more on the striatal system for offline consolidation because of structural impairments in the hippocampus. Additionally, this compensatory mechanism may not fully substitute for the role of the impaired hippocampus itself.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Motor sequence learning (MSL) relies on both the hippocampal and striatal systems, but whether functional performance is altered after MSL consolidation when the hippocampus is impaired remains unknown. Our results indicated that whereas the main effect of consolidation was observed in the hippocampus-related functional connection in the healthy control (HC) group, it was only evident in the striatum-related functional loop in the left medial temporal lobe epilepsy (LmTLE) group.

The underlying mechanisms of bright light therapy (BLT) in the prevention of individuals with subthreshold depression symptoms are yet to be elucidated. The goal of the study was to assess the correlation between midbrain monoamine-producing nuclei treatment-related functional connectivity (FC) changes and depressive symptom improvements in subthreshold depression. This double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted between March 2020 and June 2022. A total of 74 young adults with subthreshold depression were randomly assigned to receive 8-week BLT (N = 38) or placebo (N = 36). Depression severity was measured using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS). The participants underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging at baseline and after treatment. The dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN), ventral tegmental area (VTA), and habenula seed-based whole-brain FC were analyzed. A multivariate regression model examined whether baseline brain FC was associated with changes in scores on HDRS during BLT treatment. BLT group displayed significantly decreased HDRS scores from pre- to posttreatment compared to the placebo group. BLT increased the FC between the DRN and medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and between the left VTA and right superior frontal gyrus (SFG). Altered VTA-SFG connectivity was associated with HDRS changes in the BLT group. Moreover, the baseline FC between DRN and mPFC could predict HDRS changes in BLT. These results suggested that BLT improves depressive symptoms and increases midbrain monoamine-producing nuclei and frontal cortex connectivity in subthreshold depression, which raises the possibility that pretreatment FC of DRN-mPFC could be used as a biomarker for improved BLT treatment in depression. OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship between the Parent Symptom Questionnaire (PSQ) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in China, and the application value of PSQ questionnaire. METHOD: Two hundred two children aged 3 to 14 years were enrolled in this study. Statistical methods were used to screen characteristic factors and explore the relationship between PSQ items and ADHD. Machine learning algorithms were used to evaluate the clinical application value of PSQ in screening ADHD. RESULTS: By Mean-Whitney U test, LASSO regression and decision tree, 44, 24 and 12 items were screened out from PSQ with high correlation with ADHD. Then the above items were classified, and the accuracy reached more than 90%. Moreover, the items of ADHD hyperactivity index of PSQ under artificial intelligence algorithm are different from those of PSQ. CONCLUSION: There are some differences in the items of hyperactivity index between the PSQ and ADHD in China. The artificial intelligence algorithm model of ADHD children based on PSQ scale has a high accuracy.

Surgery is one of the most frequent and effective intervention strategies for lumbar spinal stenosis, however, one-third of patients are not satisfied with postoperative outcomes. It is not clear whether perioperative systemic lidocaine could accelerate the early postoperative quality of recovery in patients undergoing lumbar spinal stenosis surgery. 66 patients were enrolled in this trial. Lidocaine or placebo was administered at a loading dose of 1.5 mg/kg for 10 min and then infused at 2.0 mg/kg/hour till the end of surgery. Continued infusion by postoperative patient-controlled intravenous analgesia with a dose of 40 mg/hour. The primary outcome was the quality of recovery. Secondary outcomes included the time of the patient's first flatus, catheter removal time, underground time from the end of the surgery, pain score, levels of inflammatory factors (IL-6, IL-10, TNF-α), postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), sufentanil rescues, patients' satisfaction scores, and complications of lidocaine. Eventually, 56 patients were in the final analysis with similar age, Body Mass Index (BMI), duration of surgery and anesthesia, and median QoR-15 score (a development and Psychometric Evaluation of a Postoperative Quality of Recovery Score). The difference in median QoR-15 score in placebo versus lidocaine patients was statistically significant (IQR, 106 (104-108) versus 114 (108.25-119.25), P < 0.001). The Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) score at the 12th hour, median sufentanil rescue consumption, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) of patients treatment with lidocaine were lower. Nevertheless, patients given lidocaine had high satisfaction scores. Suggesting that lidocaine enhanced the postoperative quality of recovery, met early postoperative gastrointestinal function recovery, provided superior pain relief, lessened inflammatory cytokines, etc., indicating it may be a useful intervention to aid recovery following lumbar spinal stenosis surgery.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a predictive model of cognitive impairment in older adults based on a novel machine learning (ML) algorithm. Methods: The complete data of 2,226 participants aged 60-80 years were extracted from the 2011-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database. Cognitive abilities were assessed using a composite cognitive functioning score (Z-score) calculated using a correlation test among the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease Word Learning and Delayed Recall tests, Animal Fluency Test, and the Digit Symbol Substitution Test. Thirteen demographic characteristics and risk factors associated with cognitive impairment were considered: age, sex, race, body mass index (BMI), drink, smoke, direct HDL-cholesterol level, stroke history, dietary inflammatory index (DII), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) score, sleep duration, and albumin level. Feature selection is performed using the Boruta algorithm. Model building is performed using ten-fold cross-validation, machine learning (ML) algorithms such as generalized linear model (GLM), random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), artificial neural network (ANN), and stochastic gradient boosting (SGB). The performance of these models was evaluated in terms of discriminatory power and clinical application. Results: The study ultimately included 2,226 older adults for analysis, of whom 384 (17.25%) had cognitive impairment. After random assignment, 1,559 and 667 older adults were included in the training and test sets, respectively. A total of 10 variables such as age, race, BMI, direct HDL-cholesterol level, stroke history, DII, HbA1c, PHQ-9 score, sleep duration, and albumin level were selected to construct the model. GLM, RF, SVM, ANN, and SGB were established to obtain the area under the working characteristic curve of the test set subjects 0.779, 0.754, 0.726, 0.776, and 0.754. Among all models, the GLM model had the best predictive performance in terms of discriminatory power and clinical application. Conclusions: ML models can be a reliable tool to predict the occurrence of cognitive impairment in older adults. This study used machine learning methods to develop and validate a well performing risk prediction model for the development of cognitive impairment in the elderly.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic nonspecific low back pain (CNLBP) is a serious medical and social problem resulting in functional decline and decreased work ability. Tuina, a form of manual therapy, has been sparsely used to treat patients with CNLBP. To systematically assess the efficacy and safety of Tuina for patients with CNLBP. METHODS: Multiple English and Chinese literature databases were searched until September 2022 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of Tuina in the treatment of CNLBP. The methodological quality was assessed using the Cochrane Collaboration's tool, and certainty of the evidence was determined with the online Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation tool. RESULTS: Fifteen RCTs with 1390 patients were included. Tuina demonstrated a significant effect on pain (SMD: -0.82; 95% CI -1.12 to -0.53; P < .001; I2 = 81%) and physical function (SMD: -0.91; 95% CI -1.55 to -0.27; P = .005; I2 = 90%) when compared to control. However, Tuina resulted in no significant improvement for quality of life (QoL) (SMD: 0.58; 95% CI -0.04 to 1.21; P = .07; I2 = 73%;) compared to control. The Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation evidence quality was determined to be low level for pain relief, physical function, and QoL measurements. Only six studies reported adverse events; none were serious. CONCLUSION: Tuina might be an effective and safe strategy for treating CNLBP in terms of pain and physical function, but not for QoL. The study results should be interpreted with caution for their low-level evidence. More multicenter, large-scale RCTs with a rigorous design are required to further confirm our findings.

BACKGROUND: Falls are commonplace among elderly people. It is urgent to prevent falls. Previous studies have confirmed that there is a difference in plantar pressure between falls and non-falls in elderly people, but the relationship between fall risk and foot pressure has not been studied. In this study, the differences in dynamic plantar pressure between elderly people with high and low fall risk were preliminarily discussed, and the characteristic parameters of plantar pressure were determined. METHODS: Twenty four high-fall-risk elderly individuals (HR) and 24 low-fall-risk elderly individuals (LR) were selected using the Berg Balance Scale 40 score. They wore wearable foot pressure devices to walk along a 20-m-long corridor. The peak pressure (PP), pressure time integral (PTI), pressure gradient (maximum pressure gradient (MaxPG), minimum pressure gradient (MinPG), full width at half maximum (FWHM)) and average pressure (AP) of their feet were measured for inter-group and intra-group analysis. RESULTS: The foot pressure difference comparing the high fall risk with low fall risk groups was manifested in PP and MaxPG, concentrated in the midfoot and heel (p < 0.05), while the only time parameter, FWHM, was manifested in the whole foot (p < 0.05). The differences between the left and right foot were reflected in all parameters. The differences between the left and right foot in LR were mainly reflected in the heel (p < 0.05), while it in the HR was mainly reflected in the forefoot (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The differences comparing the high fall risk with low fall risk groups were mostly reflected in the midfoot and heel. The HR may have been more cautious when landing. In the intra-group comparison, the difference between the right and left foot of the LR was mainly reflected during heel striking, while it was mainly reflected during pedalling in the HR. The sensitivity of PP, PTI and AP was lower and the newly introduced pressure gradient could better reflect the difference in foot pressure between the two groups. The pressure gradient can be used as a new foot pressure parameter in scientific research.

Objective: To determine the correlations between dietary and blood inflammation indices in elderly Americans and their effects on cognitive function. Methods: This research extracted data from the 2011-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for 2,479 patients who were ≥60 years old. Cognitive function was assessed as a composite cognitive function score (Z-score) calculated from the results of the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease Word Learning and Delayed Recall tests, the Animal Fluency test, and the Digit Symbol Substitution Test. We used a dietary inflammatory index (DII) calculated from 28 food components to represent the dietary inflammation profile. Blood inflammation indicators included the white blood cell count (WBC), neutrophil count (NE), lymphocyte count (Lym), neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), neutrophil-albumin ratio (NAR), systemic immune-inflammation index [SII, calculated as (peripheral platelet count) × NE/Lym], and systemic inflammatory response index [SIRI, calculated as (monocyte count) × NE/Lym]. WBC, NE, Lym, NLR, PLR, NAR, SII, SIRI, and DII were initially treated as continuous variables. For logistic regression, WBC, NE, Lym, NLR, PLR, NAR, SII, and SIRI were divided into quartile groups, and DII was divided into tertile groups. Results: After adjusting for covariates, WBC, NE, NLR, NAR, SII, SIRI, and DII scores were markedly higher in the cognitively impaired group than in the normal group (p < 0.05). DII was negatively correlated with the Z-score when combined with WBC, NE, and NAR (p < 0.05). After adjusting for all covariates, DII was positively correlated with SII in people with cognitive impairment (p < 0.05). Higher DII with NLR, NAR, SII, and SIRI all increased the risk of cognitive impairment (p < 0.05). Conclusion: DII was positively correlated with blood inflammation indicators, and higher DII and blood inflammation indicators increased the risk of developing cognitive impairment.

BACKGROUND: The brain area stimulated during repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) treatment is important in altered states of consciousness. However, the functional contribution of the M1 region during the treatment of high-frequency rTMS remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the clinical [the Glasgow coma scale (GCS) and the coma recovery scale-revised (CRS-R)] and neurophysiological (EEG reactivity and SSEP) responses in vegetative state (VS) patients following traumatic brain injury (TBI) before and after a protocol of high-frequency rTMS over the M1 region. METHODS: Ninety-nine patients in a VS following TBI were recruited so that their clinical and neurophysiological responses could be evaluated in this study. These patients were randomly allocated into three experimental groups: rTMS over the M1 region (test group; n = 33), rTMS over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) (control group; n = 33) and placebo rTMS over the M1 region (placebo group; n = 33). Each rTMS treatment lasted 20 min and was carried out once a day. The duration of this protocol was a month with 20 treatments (5 times per week) occurring with that time. RESULTS: We found that the clinical and neurophysiological responses improved after treatment in the test, control, and placebo groups; the improvement was highest in the test group compared to that in the control and placebo groups. CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrate an effective method of high-frequency rTMS over the M1 region for consciousness recovery after severe brain injury.

We have previously shown that healthy subjects can transfer coordination skills to the unpracticed hand by performing a unimanual task with the other hand and visualizing a bimanual action using a game-like interactive system. However, whether this system could be used to transfer coordination skills to the paretic hand after stroke and its underlying neural mechanism remain unknown. Here, using a game-like interactive system for visualization during physical practice in an immersive virtual reality environment, we examined coordination skill improvement in the unpracticed/paretic hand after training in 10 healthy subjects and 13 chronic and sub-acute stroke patients. The bimanual movement task was defined as simultaneously drawing non-symmetric three-sided squares (e.g., U and C), while the training strategy was performing a unimanual task with the right/nonparetic hand and visualizing a bimanual action. We found large decreases in the intra-hand temporal and spatial measures for movement in the unpracticed/paretic hand after training. Furthermore, a substantial reduction in the inter-hand temporal and spatial interference was observed after training. Additionally, we examined the related cortical network evolution using EEG in both the healthy subjects and stroke patients. Our studies show that the cortical network became more efficient after training in the healthy subjects and stroke patients. These results demonstrate that our proposed method could contribute to the transference of coordination skill to the paretic/unpracticed hand by promoting the efficiency of cortical networks.

Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of different non-pharmacologic therapies (NPTs) on relieving depressive symptoms and pain intensity in individuals living with chronic low back pain (LBP) and associated depression. Methods: A comprehensive search of seven English databases and two Chinese databases from inception to the search date will be undertaken. The reference lists of previously published relevant reviews and included trials will also be searched. Only peer-reviewed and published moderate-to-high quality randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for chronic LBP and associated depression treated with NPTs will be considered. Two independent reviewers will identify studies, extract data, assess risk of bias, and evaluate the strength of evidence using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. Meta-analysis will be conducted to estimate the treatment effect of various NPTs. Heterogeneity will be assessed using Cochrane's Q and the I-squared statistics. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses will be performed to assess the robustness of findings. A funnel plot will be developed to evaluate reporting bias, and Begg's and Egger's tests will be used to assess funnel plot symmetries. Results: This protocol outlines the planned scope and methodology for an upcoming systematic review and meta-analysis, which will provide up-to-date evidence on 1) which NPTs are associated with improvements in depressive symptoms and pain intensity and 2) whether the effects of NPTs on chronic LBP and associated depression vary according to clinical condition, participant, and treatment characteristics. Conclusion: Our meta-analyses of moderate-to-high quality RCTs will help to develop specific recommendations on prescribing NPTs in patients with chronic LBP and associated depression. Chinese nouns lack inflection and cannot reflect the quantitative relationship between singular and plural numbers. However, neural processes of picture naming are different from those of words. We assume that Chinese single and plural picture naming is different, and they may involve quantitative processing. Therefore, Experiment 1 was designed by picking picture naming as the task and Chinese as the target language and compared the accuracy, reaction time, and event-related potentials (ERPs) between single and plural picture naming, where two types of pictures were mixed. Although the T-test showed no significant differences in behavioral data, there were differences in ERPs. ERP differences involved two effects: P1 of 160-180 ms and P2 of 220-260 ms in the parietal-occipital lobe. These differences are suggested to reflect the neural differences in quantitative processing. Therefore, Chinese singular and plural picture naming consists of word production and implicit quantitative processing simultaneously. To explore the relationship between the two processings, we added a semantic factor (inanimate vs. animate items) to the quantity factor of Experiment 1 and carried out Experiment 2, with the observation indexes unchanged. There were no significant differences in behavioral data among the four conditions. After variance analysis, ERPs results indicated an interaction between semantic and quantitative factors in the central area at 180-280 ms. In summary, we suggest that Chinese singular and plural picture naming includes two simultaneous neural processing tasks: word production and quantitative processing, which interact in the central area at 180-280 ms.

Background: Social distancing and school closures during the COVID-19 pandemic reduced the physical activities of the preschool children living in China. However, the effects of home-based exercise on the physical fitness of Chinese preschool children during COVID-19 school closures are still unknown. This study aimed to investigate the effects of home-based exercise on the physical fitness of Chinese preschool children during COVID-19 school closure. Methods: In this retrospective analysis, data from 1,608 Chinese preschool children (aged 3-5.5 years) in a second-tier city of Guangdong Province of China (Zhongshan city) were extracted from three successive National Physical Fitness Measurement (NPFM) from 2019 to 2021. NPFM consists of weight, height, and six subtests of physical fitness including 10-m shuttle run test (SRT), standing long jump (SLJ), balance beam walking (BBW), sit-and-reach (SR), tennis throwing (TT), and double-leg timed hop (DTH) tests. The change differences or change ratios of all the items in NPFM between any two successive years from 2019 to 2021 were compared. The exercise profiles about home-based and outdoor exercise before, during, and after COVID-19 school closure were obtained from 185 preschool children via retrospective telephone survey. Results: Between 2019 and 2021, 1,608 preschool children were included in this study. We observed larger changes in SLJ, SR, TT, and DTH tests during school closure than after school closure. But the children showed lower reduction rates in the completion time of SRT and BBW. During school closure, higher change ratios in SLJ and TT were observed in the children primarily participating in home-based exercise than those primarily participating in outdoor exercise. However, no statistical differences were observed in the changes in SRT and BBW between home-based and outdoor training groups. Conclusion: The home-based exercise program might be an alternative approach to improve the physical fitness of preschool children during COVID-19 school closure, but could not be beneficial to speed-agility and balance functions. A specific guideline geared toward a home-based exercise program during the COVID-19 outbreak is highly needed.
