RESUMEN

The attractive features of lanthanide-doped upconversion luminescence (UCL), such as high photostability, nonphotobleaching or photoblinking, and large anti-Stokes shift, have shown great potentials in life science, information technology, and energy materials. Therefore, UCL modulation is highly demanded toward expected emission wavelength, lifetime, and relative intensity in order to satisfy stringent requirements raised from a wide variety of areas. Unfortunately, the majority of efforts have been devoted to either simple codoping of multiple activators or variation of hosts, while very little attention has been paid to the critical role that sensitizers have been playing. In fact, different sensitizers possess different excitation wavelengths and different energy transfer pathways (to different activators), which will lead to different UCL features. Thus, rational design of sensitizers shall provide extra opportunities for UCL tuning, particularly from the excitation side. In this review, we specifically focus on advances in sensitizers, including the current status, working mechanisms, design principles, as well as future challenges and endeavor directions.

RESUMEN

Fundamental understanding of the effect of doping on the optical properties of 3D double perovskites (DPs) especially the dynamics of self-trapped excitons (STEs) is of vital importance for their optoelectronic applications. Herein, a unique strategy via Cu+ doping to achieve efficient STE emission in the alloyed lead-free Cs2 (Ag/Na)InCl6 DPs is reported. A small amount (1.0 mol%) of Cu+ doping results in boosted STE emission in the crystals, with photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield increasing from 19.0% to 62.6% and excitation band shifting from 310 to 365 nm. Temperature-dependent PL and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopies reveal that the remarkable PL enhancement originates from the increased radiative recombination rate and density of STEs, as a result of symmetry breakdown of the STE wavefunction at the octahedral Ag+ site. These findings provide deep insights into the STE dynamics in Cu+ -doped Cs2 (Ag/Na)InCl6 , thereby laying a foundation for the future design of new lead-free DPs with efficient STE emission.

RESUMEN

Lanthanide (Ln3+)-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs), exhibiting excellent optical properties such as long photoluminescence lifetime, narrow emission bandwidth, and low autofluorescence background, have been applied in many fields, especially in biological analysis and medical diagnostics. Despite the exciting progress, the applications of Ln3+-doped UCNPs are hindered by the small absorption cross-section and low upconversion luminescence efficiency of Ln3+. To this regard, several effective strategies associated with energy transfer designing have been proposed to modulate the upconversion luminescence properties of Ln3+ in the past few decades. In this feature article, we focus on the most recent development of optical property designing in Ln3+-doped UCNPs on the basis of energy transfer between Ln3+-Ln3+, Ln3+-dyes, and Ln3+-quantum dots. Some future efforts towards the energy transfer designing in Ln3+-doped UCNPs are also proposed.

RESUMEN

Doping is an effective strategy for tailoring the optical properties of 0D Cs4PbX6 (X = Cl, Br, and I) perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) and expanding their applications. Herein, a unique approach is reported for the controlled synthesis of pure-phase Mn2+-doped Cs4PbCl6 perovskite NCs and the excited-state dynamics of Mn2+ is unveiled through temperature-dependent steady-state and transient photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. Because of the spatially confined 0D structure of Cs4PbCl6 perovskite, the NCs exhibit drastically different PL properties of Mn2+ in comparison with their 3D CsPbCl3 analogues, including significantly improved PL quantum yield in solid form (25.8%), unusually long PL lifetime (26.2 ms), large exciton binding energy, strong electron-phonon coupling strength, and an anomalous temperature evolution of Mn2+-PL decay from a dominant slow decay (in tens of ms scale) at 300 K to a fast decay (in 1 ms scale) at 10 K. These findings provide fundamental insights into the excited-state dynamics of Mn2+ in 0D Cs4PbCl6 NCs, thus laying a foundation for future design of 0D perovskite NCs through metal ion doping toward versatile applications.

RESUMEN

By taking advantage of the efficient Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) between near-infrared (NIR)-responsive lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) and Fenton reagent ferrocenyl compounds (Fc), a series of Fc-UCNPs was designed by functionalizing NaYF4:Yb,Tm nanoparticles with Fc1-Fc5 via surface-coordination chemistry. Fc-UCNP-Lipo nanosystems were then constructed by encapsulating Fc-UCNP inside liposomes for efficient delivery. Fc-UCNP can effectively release ·OH via a NIR-promoted Fenton-like reaction. In vitro and in vivo studies of Fc1-UCNP-Lipo confirmed the preferential accumulation in a tumor site followed by an enhanced uptake of cancer cells. After cellular internalization, the released Fc1-UCNP can effectively promote ·OH generation for tumor growth suppression. Such a Fc1-UCNP-Lipo nanosystem exhibits advantages such as easy fabrication, low drug dosage, and no ferrous ion release.

RESUMEN

The perfect energy level overlap of 2H11/2, 4S3/2, and 4F9/2 in Er3+ ions with those of 5F3, 5F4/5S2, and 5F5 in adjacently codoped Ho3+ ions allows efficient interenergy transfer. Therefore, in addition to routine activators, Er3+ or Ho3+ can further act as sensitizers to transfer the upconverted energy to nearby Ho3+ or Er3+, resulting in enhanced upconversion luminescence due to the emission overlap. Proper codoping of Er3+/Ho3+ or Ho3+/Er3+ obviously elevates the maximum doping concentration (thus producing additional upconverted photons) to a level higher than that causing luminescence quenching and significantly enhances upconversion emissions compared with those of singly Er3+ or Ho3+-doped host materials. Indeed, the so-far strongest red upconversion emission under 1532 nm excitation was obtained in LiYF4:Er/Ho@LiYF4 nanoparticles and Ho3+-sensitized Er3+ upconversion emissions excited by 1150 nm laser was simultaneously discovered. With great enhancement compared with that of singly Ho3+ doped counterparts, this work demonstrates the generality and rationality of our design strategy.

RESUMEN

The synthesis of REF3 (RE = La-Lu, Y) nanocrystals with controlled phase structures has so far remained a challenge. Herein we have developed a one-for-all synthetic procedure that allows the successful synthesis of REF3 nanocrystals in a controlled manner. Experimental results showed that the radius of RE ions determines the phase structure: pure hexagonal REF3 (RE = La-Eu), a mixture of hexagonal and orthorhombic REF3 (RE = Gd), and pure orthorhombic REF3 (RE = Tb-Lu, Y) nanocrystals are obtained along with the decrease of the ionic radius. As Gd is positioned exactly in the middle of the lanthanides row, GdF3 nanocrystals were used as a model to further investigate how the molar ratio of F- : Gd3+, the doping of RE ions with different ionic radii, and the doping concentration of certain RE ions affects the crystal structure of the final product.
