RESUMEN

To achieve coordinated functions, fluidic soft robots typically rely on multiple input lines for the independent inflation and deflation of each actuator. Fluidic actuators are controlled by rigid electronic pneumatic valves, restricting the mobility and compliance of the soft robot. Recent developments in soft valve designs have shown the potential to achieve a more integrated robotic system, but are limited by high energy consumption and slow response time. In this work, we present an electropermanent magnet (EPM) valve for electronic control of pneumatic soft actuators that is activated through microsecond electronic pulses. The valve incorporates a thin channel made from thermoplastic films. The proposed valve (3 × 3 × 0.8 cm, 2.9 g) can block pressure up to 146 kPa and negative pressures up to -100 kPa with a response time of less than 1 s. Using the EPM valves, we demonstrate the ability to switch between multiple operation sequences in real time through the control of a six-DoF robot capable of grasping and hopping with a single pressure input. Our proposed onboard control strategy simplifies the operation of multi-pressure systems, enabling the development of dynamically programmable soft fluid-driven robots that are versatile in responding to different tasks.

BACKGROUND: The administration of intravenous cangrelor at reperfusion achieves faster onset of platelet P2Y12 inhibition than oral ticagrelor and has been shown to reduce myocardial infarction (MI) size in the preclinical setting. We hypothesized that the administration of cangrelor at reperfusion will reduce MI size and prevent microvascular obstruction in patients with ST-segment-elevation MI undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention. METHODS: This was a phase 2, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial conducted between November 2017 to November 2021 in 6 cardiac centers in Singapore. Patients were randomized to receive either cangrelor or placebo initiated before the primary percutaneous coronary intervention procedure on top of oral ticagrelor. The key exclusion criteria included presenting <6 hours of symptom onset; previous MI and stroke or transient ischemic attack; on concomitant oral anticoagulants; and a contraindication for cardiovascular magnetic resonance. The primary efficacy end point was acute MI size by cardiovascular magnetic resonance within the first week expressed as percentage of the left ventricle mass (%LVmass). Microvascular obstruction was identified as areas of dark core of hypoenhancement within areas of late gadolinium enhancement. The primary safety end point was Bleeding Academic Research Consortium-defined major bleeding in the first 48 hours. Continuous variables were compared by Mann-Whitney U test (reported as median [first quartile-third quartile]), and categorical variables were compared by Fisher exact test. A 2-sided P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Of 209 recruited patients, 164 patients (78%) completed the acute cardiovascular magnetic resonance scan. There were no significant differences in acute MI size (placebo, 14.9% [7.3-22.6] %LVmass versus cangrelor, 16.3 [9.9-24.4] %LVmass; P=0.40) or the incidence (placebo, 48% versus cangrelor, 47%; P=0.99) and extent of microvascular obstruction (placebo, 1.63 [0.60-4.65] %LVmass versus cangrelor, 1.18 [0.53-3.37] %LVmass; P=0.46) between placebo and cangrelor despite a 2-fold decrease in platelet reactivity with cangrelor. There were no Bleeding Academic Research Consortium-defined major bleeding events in either group in the first 48 hours. CONCLUSIONS: Cangrelor administered at the time of primary percutaneous coronary intervention did not reduce acute MI size or prevent microvascular obstruction in patients with ST-segment-elevation MI given oral ticagrelor despite a significant reduction of platelet reactivity during the percutaneous coronary intervention procedure. Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) harms human health and hinders normal human life. Considering the serious complexity and obvious regional characteristics of PM2.5 pollution, it is urgent to fill in the comprehensive overview of regional characteristics and interannual evolution of PM2.5. This review studied the PM2.5 pollution in six typical areas between 2014 and 2022 based on the data published by the Chinese government and nearly 120 relevant literature. We analyzed and compared the characteristics of interannual and quarterly changes of PM2.5 concentration. The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region (BTH), Yangtze River Delta (YRD) and Pearl River Delta (PRD) made remarkable progress in improving PM2.5 pollution, while Fenwei Plain (FWP), Sichuan Basin (SCB) and Northeast Plain (NEP) were slightly inferior mainly due to the relatively lower level of economic development. It was found that the annual average PM2.5 concentration change versus year curves in the three areas with better pollution control conditions can be merged into a smooth curve. Importantly, this can be fitted for the accurate evaluation of each area and provide reliable prediction of its future evolution. In addition, we analyzed the factors affecting the PM2.5 in each area and summarize the causes of air pollution in China. They included primary emission, secondary generation, regional transmission, as well as unfavorable air dispersion conditions. We also suggested that the PM2.5 pollution control should target specific industries and periods, and further research need to be carried out on the process of secondary production. The results provided useful assistance such as effect prediction and strategy guidance for PM2.5 pollution control in Chinese backward areas.

BACKGROUND: Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2-inhibitors (SGLT2i) improve cardiovascular outcomes including reduction in risk of first hospitalisation for heart failure (HF), worsening HF and cardiovascular death regardless of HF or diabetes mellitus (DM) status. It is not known whether SGLT2i can prevent the development of incident HF or reduce the risk of HF in patients receiving trastuzumab with or without other concurrent anti-HER2 agent or sequential anthracycline for treatment of HER2 positive breast cancer. Patients with active malignancy or recent history of malignancy were excluded from participating in the main cardiovascular outcome trials involving SGLT2i. AIM: A systematic review was performed to objectively assess published literature on the cardioprotective effects of SGLT2i in breast cancer treatment-related cardiotoxicity. METHODS: Systematic searches of Embase, Medline, The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), and ClinicalTrials.gov databases were performed. Titles and abstracts were screened separately by two cardio-oncologists (JHC, WTC). Full texts of potentially eligible records were then assessed separately by JHC and WTC before inclusion into review upon joint agreement. RESULTS: 479 records were identified from 3 databases (MEDLINE=51, EMBASE=408, CENTRAL=13) and 1 registry (Clinicaltrials.gov=7). 460 records were excluded based on title and abstract (including duplicates). 19 full text reports were assessed for eligibility and included in review (basic science/animal study paper 2, Clinicaltrials.gov randomised controlled trial submission 1 (currently recruiting), basic science/animal study conference abstract 5, case report 2, review 3, editorial comment 2, clinical guidelines 1, retrospective/registry-based conference abstract 3). CONCLUSION: Cardiotoxicity is the most common dose-limiting toxicity associated with trastuzumab. Discontinuation of trastuzumab however, can lead to worse cancer outcomes. There have been case reports, registry-based, retrospective cohort-based and mechanistic studies suggesting the cardioprotective potential of SGLT2i in cancer therapy-related cardiac dysfunction (CTRCD). Based on these, there is now a call for randomised controlled trials to be performed in this patient cohort to advise guideline-directed therapy for CTRCD, which will in turn also provide detailed safety information and improve cancer and cardiovascular outcomes.

Various types of milk powder purportedly providing diverse health functions have emerged with the growth of the country's elderly population. Some manufacturers illegally add chemical drugs to their products to achieve their reported benefits, which poses a threat to consumer health. The existing standard methods are inapplicable to such complex sample matrices and require testing based on functional claims and classification. These limitations not only consume manpower and resources but also seriously impede daily regulatory efforts to detect unknown risk substances. In this study, a high-throughput method for the screening and quantitative analysis of 300 illegally added chemical drugs in functional milk powder and an identification strategy for unknown structural analogues were established using Zeno SWATH® data-independent acquisition (DIA) ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HRMS) technology combined with a QuEChERS sample purification method. The QuEChERS purification process was developed according to the characteristics of milk powder matrix. The supernatant was separated on a Kinetex F5 column (100 mm×3.0 mm, 2.6 µm) by gradient elution using 5 mmol/L ammonium formate aqueous solution (0.1% (v/v) formic acid, ) and methanol-acetonitrile (1∶1, v/v) as mobile phases. The method was validated in terms of selectivity, linearity, limits of detection and quantification (LODs and LOQs, respectively), matrix effect, accuracy, and precision. Based on a screening database for the 300 target substances, electron-activated dissociation (EAD) fragmentation was applied to obtain rich secondary MS fragmentation information, and unknown structural analogues were identified and confirmed through fragment attribution analysis. The results indicated that all compounds had good linear relationships in certain ranges with correlation coefficients >0.99. The LODs and LOQs were 0.04-2.7 and 0.2-8.0 µg/kg, respectively. The average recoveries at three spiked levels were in the range of 73.1%-125.2%, and the relative standard deviations were ≤14.8% (n=6). When the developed method was applied to detect illegally added chemicals in 60 functional milk powder samples, it detected benzoguanidine and sildenafil and successfully identified ethylphenidate, which is the structural analogue of an amphetamine. The proposed method is simple, sensitive, and accurate; thus, it may have practical application value for the daily supervision and law enforcement of milk powders with reported health functions.

The synergistic effects of antimicrobial nanostructures with antibiotics present a promising solution for overcoming resistance in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Previous studies have introduced iron as a novel coating for silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) to enhance both economic efficiency and potency against S. aureus. However, there are currently no available data on the potential of these novel nanostructures to reverse MRSA resistance. To address this gap, a population study was conducted within the MRSA community, collecting a total of 48 S. aureus isolates from skin lesions. Among these, 21 isolates (43.75%) exhibited cefoxitin resistance as determined by agar disk diffusion assay. Subsequently, a PCR test confirmed the presence of the mecA gene in 20 isolates, verifying them as MRSA. These results highlight the cefoxitin disk diffusion susceptibility test as an accurate screening method for predicting mecA-mediated resistance in MRSA. Synergy tests were performed on cefoxitin, serving as a marker antibiotic, and iron-coated AgNPs (Fe@AgNPs) in a combination study using the checkerboard assay. The average minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) of cefoxitin were calculated as 11.55 mg/mL and 3.61 mg/mL, respectively. The findings indicated a synergistic effect (FIC index < 0.5) between Fe@AgNPs and cefoxitin against 90% of MRSA infections, while an additive effect (0.5 ≤ FIC index ≤ 1) could be expected in 10% of infections. These results suggest that Fe@AgNPs could serve as an economically viable candidate for co-administration with antibiotics to reverse resistance in MRSA infections within skin lesions. Such findings may pave the way for the development of future treatment strategies against MRSA infections.

BACKGROUND: Global collaboration in cardio-oncology is needed to understand the prevalence of cancer therapy-related cardiovascular toxicity in different risk groups, practice settings, and geographic locations. There are limited data on the socioeconomic and racial/ethnic disparities that may impact access to care and outcomes. To address these gaps, we established the Global Cardio-Oncology Registry, a multinational, multicenter prospective registry. METHODS: We assembled cardiologists and oncologists from academic and community settings to collaborate in the first Global Cardio-Oncology Registry. Subsequently, a survey for site resources, demographics, and intention to participate was conducted. We designed an online data platform to facilitate this global initiative. RESULTS: A total of 119 sites responded to an online questionnaire on their practices and main goals of the registry: 49 US sites from 23 states and 70 international sites from 5 continents indicated a willingness to participate in the Global Cardio-Oncology Registry. Sites were more commonly led by cardiologists (85/119; 72%) and were more often university/teaching (81/119; 68%) than community based (38/119; 32%). The average number of cardio-oncology patients treated per month was 80 per site. The top 3 Global Cardio-Oncology Registry priorities in cardio-oncology care were breast cancer, hematologic malignancies, and patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors. Executive and scientific committees and specific committees were established. A pilot phase for breast cancer using Research Electronic Data Capture Cloud platform recently started patient enrollment. CONCLUSIONS: We present the structure for a global collaboration. Information derived from the Global Cardio-Oncology Registry will help understand the risk factors impacting cancer therapy-related cardiovascular toxicity in different geographic locations and therefore contribute to reduce access gaps in cardio-oncology care. Risk calculators will be prospectively derived and validated.

Fucoxanthin is a carotenoid that possesses various beneficial medicinal properties for human well-being. However, the current extraction technologies and quantification techniques are still lacking in terms of cost validation, high energy consumption, long extraction time, and low yield production. To date, artificial intelligence (AI) models can assist and improvise the bottleneck of fucoxanthin extraction and quantification process by establishing new technologies and processes which involve big data, digitalization, and automation for efficiency fucoxanthin production. This review highlights the application of AI models such as artificial neural network (ANN) and adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), capable of learning patterns and relationships from large datasets, capturing non-linearity, and predicting optimal conditions that significantly impact the fucoxanthin extraction yield. On top of that, combining metaheuristic algorithm such as genetic algorithm (GA) can further improve the parameter space and discovery of optimal conditions of ANN and ANFIS models, which results in high R2 accuracy ranging from 98.28% to 99.60% after optimization. Besides, AI models such as support vector machine (SVM), convolutional neural networks (CNNs), and ANN have been leveraged for the quantification of fucoxanthin, either computer vision based on color space of images or regression analysis based on statistical data. The findings are reliable when modeling for the concentration of pigments with high R2 accuracy ranging from 66.0% - 99.2%. This review paper has reviewed the feasibility and potential of AI for the extraction and quantification purposes, which can reduce the cost, accelerate the fucoxanthin yields, and development of fucoxanthin-based products.

BACKGROUND: Identification of tooth ankylosis before comprehensive orthodontic treatment can be challenging. This case series illustrates different presentations of tooth ankylosis, the importance of early diagnosis, the use of surgical luxation to aid orthodontic alignment of ankylosed teeth and its sequelae. CASE PRESENTATION: All three cases were adolescents: a 14-year-old girl with a highly placed upper left lateral incisor and history of general anaesthesia; a 14-year-old boy with an impacted upper right first premolar and history of dental trauma; and a 13-year-old girl with an infraoccluded upper left central incisor with history of replantation due to avulsion. Iatrogenic malocclusion developed from attempts to align ankylosed teeth. Subsequently, surgical luxation was performed, and the ankylosed teeth were successfully aligned. However, it was associated with pulp calcification, root resorption and recurrence of ankylosis. CONCLUSION: Surgical luxation and orthodontic alignment of ankylosed teeth can be considered a useful short-term solution to delay the need of surgical removal and teeth replacement.

BACKGROUND: To the best of our knowledge, no previous studies have explored the relationship between visceral obesity and malnutrition. Therefore, this study has aimed to investigate the association between them in patients with rectal cancer. METHODS: Patients with rectal cancer who underwent proctectomy were included. Malnutrition was defined according to the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM). Visceral obesity was measured using computed tomography (CT). The patients were classified into four groups according to the presence of malnutrition or visceral obesity. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate risk factors for postoperative complications. Univariate and multivariate cox regression analyses were performed to evaluate the risk factors for overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS). Kaplan-Meier survival curves and log-rank tests were performed for the four groups. RESULTS: This study enrolled 624 patients. 204 (32.7%) patients were included in the well-nourished non-visceral obesity (WN) group, 264 (42.3%) patients were included in the well-nourished visceral obesity (WO) group, 114 (18.3%) patients were included in the malnourished non-visceral obesity (MN) group, and 42 (6.7%) patients were included in the malnourished visceral obesity (MO) group. In the multivariate logistic regression analysis, the Charlson comorbidity index (CCI), MN, and MO were associated with postoperative complications. In the multivariate cox regression analysis, age, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score, tumor differentiation, tumor node metastasis (TNM), and MO were associated with worsened OS and CSS. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that the combination of visceral obesity and malnutrition resulted in higher postoperative complication and mortality rates and was a good indicator of poor prognosis in patients with rectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Neuropathic pain is a chronic condition commonly caused by inflammation-induced disturbances or lesions of somatosensory functions in the nervous system. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects and mechanisms of Taselisib on chronic constriction injury (CCI)-induced neuropathic pain in rats. METHODS: The rats were divided into four groups: sham group, sham + Taselisib (10 mg/kg orally once a day) group, CCI group, and CCI + Taselisib (10 mg/kg orally once a day) group. Pain behavioral tests, recorded by measuring paw withdrawal threshold (PWT) and thermal withdrawal latency (TWL), were conducted on days 0, 3, 7, 14, and 21 after surgery. After testing, the animals were euthanized and spinal dorsal horns were collected. Pro-inflammatory cytokines were quantified using ELISA and qRT-PCR. PI3K/pAKT signaling was assessed using Western blot and immunofluorescence. RESULTS: PWT and TWL were significantly reduced after CCI surgery, but were successfully increased by Taselisib treatment. Taselisib treatment notably suppressed the upregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including IL-6, IL-1ß, and TNF-⍺. Taselisib treatment significantly reduced the elevated phosphorylation of AKT and PI3K induced by CCI. CONCLUSION: Taselisib can alleviate neuropathic pain by inhibiting the pro-inflammatory response, potentially through the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway.

Comparisons of transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) derived left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) have been reported in core-lab settings but are limited in the real-world setting. We retrospectively identified outpatients from 4 hospital sites who had clinically indicated quantitative assessment of LVEFTTE and LVEFCMR and evaluated their concordance. In 767 patients (mean age 47.6 years; 67.9% males) the median inter-modality interval was 35 days. There was significant positive correlation between the 2 modalities (r = 0.75; P < 0.001). Median LVEF was 54% (IQR 47%, 60%) for TTE and 59% (IQR 51%, 64%) for CMR, (P < 0.001). Normal LVEFTTE was confirmed by CMR in 90.6% of cases. Of patients with severely impaired LVEFTTE, 42.3% were upwardly reclassified by CMR as less severely impaired. The overall proportion of patients that had their LVEF category confirmed by both imaging modalities was 64.4%; Cohen's Kappa 0.41, indicating fair-to-moderate agreement. Overall, CMR upwardly reclassified 28% of patients using the British Society of Echocardiography LVEF grading, 18.6% using the European Society of Cardiology heart failure classification, and 29.6% using specific reference ranges for each modality. In a multi-site "real-worldˮ clinical setting, there was significant discrepancy between LVEFTTE and LVEFCMR measurement. Only 64.4% had their LVEF category confirmed by both imaging modalities. LVEFTTE was generally lower than LVEFCMR. LVEFCMR upwardly reclassified almost half of patients with severe LV dysfunction by LVEFTTE. Clinicians should consider the inter-modality variation before making therapeutic recommendations, particularly as clinical trial LVEF thresholds have historically been guided by echocardiography.

This study used the zebrafish model to explore the hepatotoxicity of Rhododendri Mollis Flos(RMF). The mortality was calculated according to the number of the survival of zebrafish larvae 4 days after fertilization under different concentration of RMF, and the dose-toxicity curve was fitted to preliminarily evaluate the toxicity of RMF. The liver phenotypes under the sublethal concentration of RMF in the treatment group and the blank control group were observed by hematoxylin-eosin(HE) staining and acridine orange(AO) staining. Meanwhile, the activities of alanine aminotransferase(ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase(AST) were determined to confirm the hepatotoxicity of RMF. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction(real-time PCR) and Western blot were used to determine the expressions of genes and proteins in zebrafish larvae. Gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry(GC-TOF-MS) was used to conduct untargeted metabolomics testing to explore the mechanism. The results showed that the toxicity of RMF to zebrafish larvae was dose-dependent, with 1 100 µg·mL~(-1) of the absolute lethal concentration and 448 µg·mL~(-1) of sublethal concentration. The hepatocyte apoptosis and degeneration appeared in the zebrafish larvae under the sublethal concentration of RMF. The content of ALT and AST in zebrafish larvae at the end of the experiment was significantly increased in a dose-dependent manner. Under the sublethal concentration, the expressions of genes and proteins related to apoptosis in zebrafish larvae were significantly increased as compared with the blank control group. The results of untargeted metabolomics showed that the important metabolites related to the he-patotoxicity of RMF were mainly enriched in alanine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, and other pathways. In conclusion, it is inferred that RMF has certain hepatotoxicity to zebrafish larvae, and its mechanism may be related to apoptosis.

Cardio-oncology is an emerging multi-disciplinary field, which aims to reduce morbidity and mortality of cancer patients by preventing and managing cancer treatment-related cardiovascular toxicities. With the exponential growth in cancer and cardiovascular diseases in Asia, there is an emerging need for cardio-oncology awareness among physicians and country-specific cardio-oncology initiatives. In this state-of-the-art review, we sought to describe the burden of cancer and cardiovascular disease in Asia, a region with rich cultural and socio-economic diversity. From describing the uniqueness and challenges (such as socio-economic disparity, ethnical and racial diversity, and limited training opportunities) in establishing cardio-oncology in Asia, and outlining ways to overcome any barriers, this article aims to help advance the field of cardio-oncology in Asia.

Lollingite (FeAs2) is considered an arsenic-bearing mineral that is oxidized faster than arsenopyrite. The geometric configuration, chemical valence bond, and microscopic reaction of the oxidation on the surface of lollingite were systematically studied, which are of great significance for understanding the mechanism of oxidative dissolution. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out to characterize the (101) surface oxidation process of lollingite under the O2/O2 + H2O conditions. XPS results confirmed that the participation of water molecules can promote the formation of abundant OH structures on the surface of lollingite, while the relative concentration of O, As(III), and Fe(III) increased. Moreover, the DFT results demonstrated that the (101) As-terminal plane of FeAs2 was the most stable surface with the lowest surface energy. H2O molecules were physically adsorbed onto the Fe atoms of the lollingite surface, while oxygen molecules can readily be adsorbed on the Fe-As2 site by chemical adsorption processes. The oxidation process of the lollingite surface with water includes the following mechanisms: adsorption, dissociation, formation of the hydrogen bond, and desorption. The dissociation of the H2O molecule into OH and H led to the hydroxylation of both Fe and As atoms and the formation of hydrogen bonding. The participation of H2O molecules can also reduce the reaction energy barrier and accelerate the oxidation reaction of the lollingite surface, especially as far as the water dissociation and formation of hydrogen bonds are concerned. According to PDOS data, there is considerable hybridization between the d orbitals of bonded Fe atoms and the p orbitals of O atoms, as well as between the p orbitals of bonded As atoms and the p orbitals of O atoms. Due to a strong propensity for orbital hybridization and bonding between the s orbitals of the H atoms in H2O molecules and the p orbitals of the O atoms on the (101) surface, water molecules have the ability to speed up the oxidation on the surface.

Identification of microalgae species is of importance due to the uprising of harmful algae blooms affecting both the aquatic habitat and human health. Despite this occurence, microalgae have been identified as a green biomass and alternative source due to its promising bioactive compounds accumulation that play a significant role in many industrial applications. Recently, microalgae species identification has been conducted through DNA analysis and various microscopy techniques such as light, scanning electron, transmission electron, and atomic force -microscopy. The aforementioned procedures have encouraged researchers to consider alternate ways due to limitations such as costly validation, requiring skilled taxonomists, prolonged analysis, and low accuracy. This review highlights the potential innovations in digital microscopy with the incorporation of both hardware and software that can produce a reliable recognition, detection, enumeration, and real-time acquisition of microalgae species. Several steps such as image acquisition, processing, feature extraction, and selection are discussed, for the purpose of generating high image quality by removing unwanted artifacts and noise from the background. These steps of identification of microalgae species is performed by reliable image classification through machine learning as well as deep learning algorithms such as artificial neural networks, support vector machines, and convolutional neural networks. Overall, this review provides comprehensive insights into numerous possibilities of microalgae image identification, image pre-processing, and machine learning techniques to address the challenges in developing a robust digital classification tool for the future.

The identification of microalgae species is an important tool in scientific research and commercial application to prevent harmful algae blooms (HABs) and recognizing potential microalgae strains for the bioaccumulation of valuable bioactive ingredients. The aim of this study is to incorporate rapid, high-accuracy, reliable, low-cost, simple, and state-of-the-art identification methods. Thus, increasing the possibility for the development of potential recognition applications, that could identify toxic-producing and valuable microalgae strains. Recently, deep learning (DL) has brought the study of microalgae species identification to a much higher depth of efficiency and accuracy. In doing so, this review paper emphasizes the significance of microalgae identification, and various forms of machine learning algorithms for image classification, followed by image pre-processing techniques, feature extraction, and selection for further classification accuracy. Future prospects over the challenges and improvements of potential DL classification model development, application in microalgae recognition, and image capturing technologies are discussed accordingly.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the value of the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI), prognostic nutritional index (PNI), and advanced lung cancer inflammation index (ALI) scores in detecting malnutrition in patients with rectal cancer; the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) was used as the reference criterion. Materials and methods: This study included patients with rectal cancer who underwent proctectomy. GNRI, PNI, and ALI were calculated to detect the GLIM-defined malnutrition using the Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the association between the nutritional tools and postoperative complications. Kaplan-Meier survival curves, log-rank tests, and univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were used to clarify the relationship between nutritional tools and overall survival (OS). Results: This study enrolled 636 patients with rectal cancer. The GNRI demonstrated the highest sensitivity (77.8%), pretty specificity (69.0%), and the largest AUC (0.734). The GNRI showed good property in predicting major postoperative complications. All three nutritional tools were independent predictors of OS. Conclusion: The GNRI can be used as a promising alternative to the GLIM and is optimal in perioperative management of patients with rectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) and gastric cancer are age-related diseases, and their incidence rates have risen in past decades. However, few studies have examined the relationship between MetS and the prognosis of elderly patients who underwent radical gastrectomy, and the conclusions remain controversial. METHODS: We conducted a prospective study of elderly patients who underwent radical gastrectomy for gastric cancer from August 2014 to February 2018. MetS was defined based on visceral fat area (VFA) instead of BMI or waist circumference. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was used to determine the cutoff values for VFA. RESULTS: A total of 585 patients were included in this study. The optimal cutoff values for VFA were 96.1 cm2 for men and 105.2 cm2 for women, and 212 patients were diagnosed with MetS. The patients with MetS suffered significantly more postoperative complications than those without MetS (37.3% versus 21.4%, P < 0.001). The multivariable logistic regression analysis demonstrated that MetS (OR 2.923, P < 0.001), BMI < 18.5 kg/m2 (OR 2.086, P = 0.045), cardiac tumor (OR 1.865, P = 0.013), and Nutritional Risk Screening 2002 scores ≥ 3 (OR 1.654, P = 0.015) were independent risk factors for postoperative complications. During a median follow-up period of 56.4 months, the MetS group and the non-MetS group had comparable overall survival and disease-specific survival. CONCLUSIONS: MetS was an independent risk factor for complications of the elderly patients after radical gastrectomy, but had no influence on long-term survival.

The study investigated the inhibitory effect and mechanism of tectorigenin derivative(SGY) against herpes simplex virus type Ⅰ(HSV-1) by in vitro experiments. The cytotoxicity of SGY and positive drug acyclovir(ACV) on African green monkey kidney(Vero) cells and mouse microglia(BV-2) cells was detected by cell counting kit-8(CCK-8) method, and the maximum non-toxic concentration and median toxic concentration(TC_(50)) of the drugs were calculated. After Vero cells were infected with HSV-1, the virulence was determined by cytopathologic effects(CPE) to calculate viral titers. The inhibitory effect of the tested drugs on HSV-1-induced cytopathy in Vero cells was measured, and their modes of action were initially explored by virus adsorption, replication and inactivation. The effects of the drugs on viral load of BV-2 cells 24 h after HSV-1 infection and the Toll-like receptor(TLR) mRNA expression were detected by real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR(RT-qPCR). The maximum non-toxic concentrations of SGY against Vero and BV-2 cells were 382.804 µg·mL~(-1) and 251.78 µg·mL~(-1), respectively, and TC_(50) was 1 749.98 µg·mL~(-1) and 2 977.50 µg·mL~(-1), respectively. In Vero cell model, the half maximal inhibitory concentration(IC_(50)) of SGY against HSV-1 was 54.49 µg·mL~(-1), and the selection index(SI) was 32.12, with the mode of action of significantly inhibiting replication and directly inactivating HSV-1. RT-qPCR results showed that SGY markedly reduced the viral load in cells. The virus model group had significantly increased relative expression of TLR2, TLR3 and tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated factor 3(TRAF3) and reduced relative expression of TLR9 as compared with normal group, and after SGY intervention, the expression of TLR2, TLR3 and TRAF3 was decreased to different degrees and that of TLR9 was enhanced. The expression of inflammatory factors inducible nitric oxide synthase(iNOS), tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α), and interleukin-1ß(IL-1ß) was remarkably increased in virus model group as compared with that in normal group, and the levels of these inflammatory factors dropped after SGY intervention. In conclusion, SGY significantly inhibited and directly inactivated HSV-1 in vitro. In addition, it modulated the expression of TLR2, TLR3 and TLR9 related pathways, and suppressed the increase of inflammatory factor levels.
