RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of electroacupuncture(EA) at "Shenmen"(HT7) and "Sanyinjiao"(SP6)on energy metabolism in paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of hypothalamus in insomnia rats, so as to explore its mechanism underlying improvement of insomnia. METHODS: A total of 66 SD rats (half male and half female) were randomized into 3 groups:normal control, model and EA groups(n=22 per group). The insomnia model was established by binding the rat for at least 4 h (step increase of 30 min per day), once daily for 15 days. EA (5 Hz /25 Hz, 0.5-1.0 mA) was applied to unilateral HT7 and SP6 for 15 min, once daily for 5 days. The rats' spontaneous activities during day and night were recorded by using the ClockLab Data Collection and Analysis System, and the duration of exhausted swimming was detected by using load-bearing endurance swimming test. The expression of adenosine 5'-monophosphate (AMP)-activated protein kinase (AMPK) of PVN tissue was assayed by Western blot, and the contents of acetyl coenzyme A (Ac-CoA) and Na+-K+adenosine triphosphatase (Na+-K+-ATPase) in the PVN tissue, and corticosterone (CORT) in plasma were assayed by ELISA. Changes of the ultrastructure of PVN cells were observed by transmission electron microscope. RESULTS: After modeling, the rats' daytime and nocturnal locomotor activities were significantly increased and decreased, respectively (P<0.05), and the duration of exhausted swimming was considerably shortened in the model group compared with that of the normal control group (P<0.05). The expression level of AMPK protein in the PVN was obviously up-regulated (P<0.05), and the contents of Ac-CoA and Na+-K+-ATPase in PVN and CORT in plasma were markedly decreased in the model control group relevant to the normal group (P<0.05). After EA intervention, the increased daytime locomotion and the decreased nocturnal activities, the shortened duration of exhausted swimming, the up-regulated expression of AMPK, and the decreased Ac-CoA, Na+-K+-ATPase and CORT contents were all reversed in the EA treated rats relevant to those of the insomnia rats (all P<0.05). Moreover, ultrastructural observation showed mitochondrial swelling and disappearance of partial ribosomes in the plasma of PVN cells in the model group, while in the EA group, only mild swelling of some mitochondria was found, being with basically normal nuclear membrane, mitochondria, rough endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi complex and ribosomes. CONCLUSION: EA at HT7 and SP6 has a positive effect in improving insomnia and insomnia-induced fatigue in insomnia rats, which may be associated with its effects in restraining the expression of AMPK protein, and up-regulating the contents of Ac-CoA and Na+-K+-ATPase in PVN and CORT in plasma.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the occurrence and associated factors for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in rescuers and firefighters. METHODS: The PTSD of 264 rescuers and firefighters who had participated in rescue was evaluated using the self-designed fireman general situation questionnaire and PTSD Checklist-Civilian Version (PCL-C). The factors associated with the occurrence of PTSD were also analyzed. RESULTS: The incidence rate of PTSD in the subjects was 8.3%. The PTSD rate of special service corps (12%) was significantly higher than that of other subjects (P<0.05). The incidence of PTSD was highest in the rescuers and firefighters above the third rank, but without significant differences (P>0.05). The PTSD rate of married rescuers and firefighters was significantly higher than that of unmarried subjects (P<0.05). The PTSD rate of subjects addicted to drinking was significantly higher than that of non-drinking subjects (P<0.05). Subjects with more frequent attendance were more susceptible to PTSD compared with those with less attendance. CONCLUSION: The incidence rate of PTSD is high in rescuers and firefighters who have attended rescues. It is necessary to implement both short-term and long-term counseling programs for stress management and intervention in order to reduce the psychological trauma after rescue and improve the mental health of rescuers and firefighters.

RESUMEN

Content caching at the base station of the Radio Access Network (RAN) is a way to reduce backhaul transmission and improve the quality of experience. So it is crucial to manage such massive microcaches to store the contents in a coordinated manner, in order to increase the overall mobile network capacity to support more number of requests. We achieve this goal in this paper with a novel caching scheme, which reduces the repeating traffic by request filtration and asynchronous multicast in a RAN. Request filtration can make the best use of the limited bandwidth and in turn ensure the good performance of the coordinated caching. Moreover, the storage at the mobile devices is also considered to be used to further reduce the backhaul traffic and improve the users' experience. In addition, we drive the optimal cache division in this paper with the aim of reducing the average latency user perceived. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms existing algorithms.

RESUMEN

The main purpose for this study was to monitor ambient air particles and metallic elements (Mn, Fe, Zn, Cr, and Cu) in total suspended particulates (TSPs) concentration, dry deposition at three characteristic sampling sites of central Taiwan. Additionally, the calculated/measured dry deposition flux ratios of ambient air particles and metallic elements were calculated with Woods models at these three characteristic sampling sites during years of 2009-2010. As for ambient air particles, the results indicated that the Woods model generated the most accurate dry deposition prediction results when particle size was 18 µm in this study. The results also indicated that the Woods model exhibited better dry deposition prediction performance when the particle size was greater than 10 µm for the ambient air metallic elements in this study. Finally, as for Quan-xing sampling site, the main sources were many industrial factories under process around these regions and were severely polluted areas. In addition, the highest average dry deposition for Mn, Fe, Zn, and Cu species occurred at Bei-shi sampling site, and the main sources were the nearby science park, fossil fuel combustion, and Taichung thermal power plant (TTPP). Additionally, as for He-mei sampling site, the main sources were subjected to traffic mobile emissions.

RESUMEN

Total gaseous mercury (Hg) (TGM), gaseous oxidized Hg (GOM), and particulate-bound Hg (PBM) concentrations and dry depositions were measured at an urban site in central Taiwan. The concentrations were 6.14±3.91 ng m(-3), 332±153, and 71.1±46.1 pg m(-3), respectively. These results demonstrate high Hg pollution at the ground level in Taiwan. A back trajectory plot shows the sources of the high TGM concentration were in the low atmosphere (<500 m) and approximately 50% of the air masses coming from upper troposphere (>500 m) were associated with low TGM concentrations. This finding implies that Hg is trapped in the low atmosphere and comes from local Hg emission sources. The conditional probability function (CPF) reveals that the plumes of high TGM concentrations come from the south and northwest of the site. The plume from the south comes from two municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWIs). However, no significant Hg point source is located to the northwest of the site; therefore, the plumes from the northwest are hypothesized to be related to the combustion of agricultural waste. Dry deposition fluxes of Hg measured at this site considerably exceeded those measured in North America. Overall, this area is regarded as a highly Hg contaminated area because of local Hg emission sources.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effective mechanism of electroacupuncture for chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). METHODS: The dynamic detection of chronobiology was used to test the event-related potentials in 20 healthy subjects and 20 CFS patients. P3a and P3b latencies at 4 equidistant time points (8:00, 14:00, 20:00, 2:00) within 24 hours were collected and analyzed. RESULTS: (1) Latency of P3a in CFS group was obviously prolonged at 14:00 compared to health group with statistical significance (P < 0.05), latency of P3b was decreased at 14:00 after electroacupuncture treatment with statistical significance compared to that of pre-treatment (P < 0.01). (2) There were obviously circadian rhythm in latency of P3a and P3b in health group (P < 0.05), which were not seen in CFS group (P > 0.05); the circadian rhythm latency of P3b restored after treatment (P < 0.05). (3) The latency acrophase of P3a and P3b pre-treatment obviously shifted backward compared to that of healthy subjects (P < 0.05), shifted forward after electroacupuncture treatment (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The event-related potential circadian rhythms are lost in CFS patients. Electroacupuncture at Shenshu (BL 23) and Zusanli (ST 36) can regulate the circadian rhythm of P3a and P3b latency and improve the cognition of the patients in daytime.
