RESUMEN

UNLABELLED: A 68-year-old woman with no previous mental illness presented with a three-month history of decreased energy, fatigue, feelings of hopelessness, pessimism, difficulty concentrating, and persistent feelings of "emptiness", worthlessness, insomnia, appetite loss, diminished functionality. The patient's neurological examination was normal. She was diagnosis with major depressive disorder (MDD) by Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) IV criteria and received psychiatric treatment. Resistance at therapy leaded at cerebral axial computed tomography (CT) indication. Cerebral CT-scan revealed an intracranial expansive mass (EPIC) located in frontal-temporal (F-T) right lobe, size 42/45/66 mm, hyperdense lesion, without peri-lesional edema, inserted on the great sphenoid wing, image suggestive for meningioma. MRI confirmed the presence of tumor and angiography showed the arterial source of the meningioma. The neurosurgical intervention removed successfully the tumor. Grossly examination revealed a giant tumor with a maximal diameter of 7 cm. The histological aspect of the tumor was highly representative for the diagnosis of meningioma. Patient mental status was evaluated at baseline, in preoperative period and postoperative period and had been using Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) - 17 items version, Clinical Global Impression Scale (CGI), and Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF). After neurosurgical intervention, functioning was improving with completed remission of depression symptoms at six-month postoperative evaluation. CONCLUSION: Most meningiomas are slow growing and many are found incidentally. The decision to perform a cerebral CT-scan depends on the clinician's degree of suspicion that a tumor is present. A first depressive episode is a clinical condition with principal indication for cerebral CT-scan.

RESUMEN

The aim of the paper was the morphological study of the cardiac myxomas, admitted and operated at CCI, between 2000 and 2004. We evaluated the histology of the tumor, the incidence of the specific lesions, and we analysed the tumoral types on the basis of cardiac myxoma macroscopic appearance in correlation with clinical picture of tumor.

RESUMEN

A new, simple, clean and selective flow injection strategy based on the tandem photochemical reaction-chemiluminescence detection was applied to the determination of chloramphenicol. The determination is based on the on-line photodegradation of the drug in a glycine buffer at pH 8.8 by using a photoreactor consisting of 697 cmx0.5 mm PTFE tubing helically coiled around an 8 W low-pressure mercury lamp. Photodegradated chloramphenicol is detected by direct chemiluminescence of resulting photo-fragments and their subsequent reaction with potassium permanganate in sulfuric acid medium as oxidant. The method allows the chemiluminescence determination of compounds which do not exhibit native chemiluminescence. The calibration graph was linear up to 14 mug ml(-1) chloramphenicol, the limit of detection was 30 ng ml(-1), the relative standard deviation was 2.4% for 7 mug ml(-1) of the drug and the sample throughput was 60 h(-1). Taking into account the importance of the medium of photodegradation on the mechanism of photodegradation a comparative study in terms of selective was performed for different chemical media employed in the procedure of photodegradation. The proposed method was applied to the determination of chloramphenicol in commercially available pharmaceutical formulations.

RESUMEN

An amperometric flow system combined with a glucose oxidase-mutarotase reactor was optimized and used to determine aromatic amines and phenols using peroxidase-modified graphite electrodes. An increase in currents upon injection of the analyzed substrate was shown to be approximated by a Michaelis-Menten type dependence. The detection limit was calculated as 3 times the noise, and the sensitivity was calculated as Imax/K(m)app. Commercially available horseradish peroxidase was compared with tobacco anionic and peanut cationic peroxidases for determination of aromatic amines and phenols. Detection limits of 10 nM for determination of o-aminophenol and o- and p-phenylenediamine achieved with a tobacco peroxidase-modified electrode give a promise for further improvements in sensitivities and detection limits of biosensors.
