RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: This study has three objectives: A) To investigate the relationship of ageism on older adults' civic activities; B) To analyze the influence of ageism on mental health; and C) To explore the impact of civic participation on older adults' mental health. METHOD: This qualitative study included 782 older people from three different nationalities (Portuguese, Brazilian, and English) ranging in age from 65 to 88. All the interviews went through the process of content analysis. RESULTS: For the first objective, the findings encompass one high-level theme (Social and individual incompetence), which included social rejection (86%), reduced competence (84%), expectations of failure (83%), and not being able to contribute (77%). For the second objective, findings indicated two overarching categories: Perceived inability, including frustration and impotence (89%), incompetence (77%) and irrelevance (71%); and Perceived distress, including anger (81%), feelings of anxiety (68%); and emotional bursts (63%). For the third objective, the following two high-level themes emerged: Ego-oriented resources, which comprised the development of a sense of purpose (81%), learning cognitive skills (71%), and (A3) practising sense of agency (67%); and Social-oriented resources, encompassing feeling socially integrated (80%); and expressing emotionally (54%). Findings indicated that the most verbalized themes for the three objectives were the same across the three nationalities. CONCLUSIONS: Ageism made it difficult for people to participate in civic life, which has been linked to better mental health. These findings emphasize the need to encourage inclusive civic involvement to improve older individuals' mental health.

RESUMEN

Klebsiella aerogenes is an important opportunistic pathogen with the potential to develop resistance against last-line antibiotics, such as carbapenems, limiting the treatment options. Here, we investigated the antibiotic resistance profiles of 10 K. aerogenes strains isolated from patient samples in the intensive-care unit of a Brazilian tertiary hospital using conventional PCR and a comprehensive genomic characterization of a specific K. aerogenes strain (CRK317) carrying both the blaKPC-2 and blaNDM-1 genes simultaneously. All isolates were completely resistant to ß-lactam antibiotics, including ertapenem, imipenem, and meropenem with differencing levels of resistance to aminoglycosides, quinolones, and tigecycline also observed. Half of the strains studied were classified as multidrug-resistant. The carbapenemase-producing isolates carried many genes of interest including: ß-lactams (blaNDM-1, blaKPC-2, blaTEM-1, blaCTX-M-1 group, blaOXA-1 group and blaSHVvariants in 20-80% of the strains), aminoglycoside resistance genes [aac(6')-Ib and aph(3')-VI, 70 and 80%], a fluoroquinolone resistance gene (qnrS, 80%), a sulfonamide resistance gene (sul-2, 80%) and a multidrug efflux system transporter (mdtK, 70%) while all strains carried the efflux pumps Acr (subunit A) and tolC. Moreover, we performed a comprehensive genomic characterization of a specific K. aerogenes strain (CRK317) carrying both the blaKPC-2 and blaNDM-1 genes simultaneously. The draft genome assembly of the CRK317 had a total length of 5,462,831 bp and a GC content of 54.8%. The chromosome was found to contain many essential genes. In silico analysis identified many genes associated with resistance phenotypes, including ß-lactamases (blaOXA-9, blaTEM-1, blaNDM-1, blaCTX-M-15, blaAmpC-1, blaAmpC-2), the bleomycin resistance gene (bleMBL), an erythromycin resistance methylase (ermC), aminoglycoside-modifying enzymes [aac(6')-Ib, aadA/ant(3")-Ia, aph(3')-VI], a sulfonamide resistance enzyme (sul-2), a chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (catA-like), a plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance protein (qnrS1), a glutathione transferase (fosA), PEtN transferases (eptA, eptB) and a glycosyltransferase (arnT). We also detected 22 genomic islands, eight families of insertion sequences, two putative integrative and conjugative elements with a type IV secretion system, and eight prophage regions. This suggests the significant involvement of these genetic structures in the dissemination of antibiotic resistance. The results of our study show that the emergence of carbapenemase-producing K. aerogenes, co-harboring blaKPC-2 and blaNDM-1, is a worrying phenomenon which highlights the importance of developing strategies to detect, prevent, and control the spread of these microorganisms.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Inspiratory muscle strength (IMS) appears to be reduced in subjects with chronic Chagas heart disease (CHD), especially in the presence of heart failure (HF). However, only one study about IMS and inspiratory muscle endurance (IME) in those with CHD without heart failure is available. This study aimed to compare IMS and IME in subjects with CHD in the presence and absence of HF. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study in which 30 CHD adult patients were divided into CHD-CC group (initial phase of CHD, without HF; n = 15) and CHD-HF group (advanced phase of CHD, with HF; n = 15). We assessed IMS by maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP) and IME by incremental (Pthmax) and constant load (TLim) tests. Reduced IMS and IME were considered by predicted MIP values <70% and Pthmax/MIP <75%, respectively. RESULTS: Inspiratory muscle weakness (IMW) was more frequent in CHD-HF than in CHD-CC (46.7% vs. 13.3%; p = 0.05), and both groups had high frequencies of reduced IME (93.3% CHD-CC vs. 100.0% CHD-HF; p = 0.95). Age-adjusted logistic regression analysis using HF as a dependent variable showed that HF was associated with an increased chance of IMW compared with the CHD-CC group (OR = 7.47; p = 0.03; 95% CI 1.20-46.19). CONCLUSION: This study suggests that, in patients with CHD, HF is associated with IMW, and that reduction of IME is already present in the initial phase, similar to the advanced phase with HF.

RESUMEN

Laccases are polyphenol oxidase enzymes and form the enzyme complex known for their role in wood decomposition and lignin degradation. The present study aimed to systematically review the state-of-the-art trends in scientific publications on laccase enzymes of the last 10 years. The main aspects checked included the laccase-producing fungal genera, the conditions of fungal growth and laccase production, the methods of immobilization, and potential applications of laccase. After applying the systematic search method 177 articles were selected to compound the final database. Although various fungi produce laccase, most studies were Trametes and Pleurotus genera. The submerged fermentation (SmF) has been the most used, however, the use of solid-state fermentation (SSF) appeared as a promising technique to produce laccase when using agro-industrial residues as substrates. Studies on laccase immobilization showed the covalent bonding and entrapment methods were the most used, showing greater efficiency of immobilization and a high number of enzyme reuses. The main use of the laccase was in bioremediation, especially in the discoloration of dyes from the textile industry and the degradation of pharmaceutical waste. Implications and consequences of all these findings in biotechnology and environment, as well as the trends and gaps of laccase research were discussed.

RESUMEN

During studies on fish parasites, two new species of Anacanthorus were found parasitizing serrasalmid fishes, Anacanthorus simpliciphallus sp. n. from the hybrid Piaractus mesopotamicus x Piaractus brachypomus and Anacanthorus brandtii sp. n. from Serrasalmus brandtii. Anacanthorus simpliciphallus sp. n. resembles Anacanthorus reginae in the morphology of the male copulatory organ (MCO) and accessory piece but differs from A. reginae in terms of the smaller size of the accessory piece, which corresponds approximately half the size of the MCO and by the presence of a conspicuous metraterm, with a membranous terminal region. Anacanthorus brandtii sp. n. differs from Anacanthorus scapanus by the expansion of the accessory piece, from Anacanthorus jegui by the ratio MCO (male copulatory organ) /AP (accessory piece) and by the expansion of hook shank, from Anacanthorus sciponophallus and A. reginae by the ratio MCO/AP. Anacanthorus brandtii sp. n. can be distinguished from A. reginae and A. simpliciphallus sp.n. by the size of hooks which is similar in A. reginae and A. simpliciphallus sp. n. and dissimilar in A. brandtii sp. n. The two new species also differ from each other by the expansion of shank.

RESUMEN

This integrative review aimed to synthesize the evidence regarding interprofessional education (IPE) in undergraduate health courses in Brazil. This article included original articles published between 2005 and 2020 addressing IPE in undergraduate health courses in Brazilian higher education institutions. Our search captured 333 articles in Medline, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase (Elsevier), Web Of Science (Main Collection), Scopus (Elsevier), Science Direct (Elsevier), ERIC, and LILACS via BVS. After applying the exclusion and inclusion criteria, the study corpus covered 34 original manuscripts. It was identified that a network is developed at the national level, and with international support, supports discussions and research on IPE. However, there is a concentration of partnerships between researchers from the Northeast, Southeast and South regions, with the need to expand studies on the country's experiences in the North and Midwest regions. There is also consistent publication of experiences concerning the implementation of IPE in undergraduate healthcare courses in Brazil. However, the uniprofessional characteristics and the lack of uniformity in the curricula are still significant, which represent essential obstacles to further IPE strengthening in Brazil. In the Brazilian literature, there is a dearth of longitudinal studies and mixed methods that assess changes in organizational practices. There remains a need for IPE studies with more rigorous designs to generate more impactful evidence.

RESUMEN

Five new species of Cosmetocleithrum were described parasitizing the gill filaments of neotropical doradid fishes. Cosmetocleithrum undulatum n. sp., Cosmetocleithrum brachylecis n. sp. and Cosmetocleithrum ludovicense n. sp. are described from Platydoras brachylecis from a market-place of São Luís, State of Maranhão, Brazil. Cosmetocleithrum sacciforme n. sp. and Cosmetocleithrum basicomplexum n. sp. are described from Oxydoras niger from Juruá River, State of Acre, Brazil. Cosmetocleithrum undulatum and Cosmetocleithrum brachylecis resemble Cosmetocleithrum falsunilatum Feronato, Razzolini, Morey & Boeger, 2022 mainly by the unique male copulatory organ (MCO) morphology but differ from these and all congeneric species mainly by the morphology of the MCO, accessory piece and hooks pairs. Cosmetocleithrum ludovicense is closer to Cosmetocleithrum confusus Kritsky, Thatcher & Boeger, 1986 and to Cosmetocleithrum akuanduba Soares, Santos Neto & Domingues, 2018 but differs from those mainly by the morphology of the accessory piece. Cosmetocleithrum sacciforme differs from all congeneric species mainly by the morphology of the accessory piece formed by a single plate of saccular appearance. Cosmetocleithrum basicomplexum also shares morphological characters with Cosmetocleithrum gigas Morey, Cachique & Babilonia, 2019 considering the size of the body and shape of the anchors, but differs mainly in the morphology of the bars and hooks. Besides the new species, new data are presented for Cosmetocleithrum leandroi Soares, Neto & Domingues, 2018, C. akuanduba and C. confusus regarding morphological characteristics and biogeography.

RESUMEN

There is a recent growing interest in the study of evolutionary and behavioral ecology of amphibians. Among salamanders, Plethodontidae is the most speciose family, with more than 500 species, while in Europe, there are only 8 species, all belonging to the genus Speleomantes. European plethodontids recently received increasing attention with regard to the study of their natural history, ecology and behavior; however, the lack of standardized data, especially for the latter, hampers comparative analysis with the species from the New World. We here synthetized the recent advances in Speleomantes behavioral ecology, considering as a starting point the comprehensive monography of Lanza and colleagues published in 2006. We identified the behavioral categories that were investigated the most, but we also highlighted knowledge gaps and provided directions for future studies. By reviewing the scientific literature published within the period 2006-2022, we observed a significant increase in the number of published articles on Speleomantes behavior, overall obtaining 36 articles. Behavioral studies on Speleomantes focused mainly on trophic behavior (42%), and on intraspecific behavior (33%), while studies on pheromonal communication and interspecific behavioral interactions were lacking. In addition, most of the studies were observational (83%), while the experimental method was rarely used. After providing a synthesis of the current knowledge, we suggest some relevant topics that need to be considered in future research on the behavioral ecology of European plethodontids, highlighting the importance of a more integrative approach in which both field observations and planned experiments are used.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: A positive Trypanosoma cruzi polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is associated with a worse prognosis in patients with chronic Chagas disease (CD). OBJECTIVES: To study the association of clinical, electrocardiographic, and echocardiographic characteristics and biomarker blood levels with positive T. cruzi PCR in chronic CD. METHODS: This is a single-centre observational cross-sectional study. Positive T. cruzi PCR association with clinical, electrocardiographic, and echocardiographic characteristics, and biomarker blood levels were studied by logistic regression analysis. p values < 0.05 were considered significant. FINDINGS: Among 333 patients with chronic CD (56.4% men; 62 ± 10 years), T. cruzi PCR was positive in 41.1%. Stepwise multivariate logistic regression showed an independent association between positive T. cruzi PCR and diabetes mellitus {odds ratio (OR) 0.53 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.30-0.93]; p = 0.03}, right bundle branch block [OR 1.78 (95% CI 1.09-2.89); p = 0.02], and history of trypanocidal treatment [OR 0.13 (95% CI 0.04-0.38); p = 0.0002]. Among patients with a history of trypanocidal treatment (n = 39), only four (10%) patients had a positive T. cruzi PCR. MAIN CONCLUSIONS: Among several studied parameters, only diabetes mellitus, right bundle branch block, and history of trypanocidal treatment showed an independent association with positive T. cruzi PCR. History of trypanocidal treatment was a strong protective factor against a positive T. cruzi PCR.

RESUMEN

Among the steps for the conversion of biomass into bioenergy, there is enzymatic hydrolysis. However, factors such as composition, formation of inhibitors, inhibition and enzymatic deactivation can affect the yield and productivity of this process. Lignocellulosic biomass is composed of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. However, lignin is organized in a complex and non-uniform way, promotes biomass recalcitrance, which repress the enzymatic attack on cellulose to be converted into glucose, and, consequently, the production of biofuel. Thus, a challenge in enzymatic hydrolysis is to model the reaction behavior. In this context, this study aims to evaluate the performance in enzymatic hydrolysis for the conversion of cellulose present in sugarcane bagasse into glucose. Therefore, modeling and optimization will be proposed to produce high glucose concentration rates. Therefore, a previously developed study will be used, in which the authors proposed a kinetic model for the hydrolysis step. However, as a differential to what has been proposed, the calculation will be carried out evaluating the evaporation, in order to maximize the response to the glucose concentration. Thus, considering evaporation and optimized kinetic parameters, it was possible to obtain high rates of glucose concentration at 204.23 $g.L^{-1.

RESUMEN

Objective: To analyze the use of health services by quilombola elderly people. Methods: This is a cross-sectional and household-based study conducted in 11 quilombola communities, with 236 elderly people ≥60 years old. Statistical differences were found in the estimates of indicators of the use of health services according to gender and age group. Pearson's Chi-square or Fisher's Exact tests were performed. Differences were considered statistically significant when p<0.05. Results: Most of the elderly people did not have a health insurance plan, seeking mainly public hospital/outpatient unit. The last medical consultation for 80.3% of the participants was performed in the 12 months prior to the interviews, with fewer consultations for men (p= 0.027). There was a low hospitalization rate in the last year and a low demand for health services in the last two weeks. Conclusion: Quilombola women and long-lived elderly people use health services more and, in general, the elderly citizens depend on SUS to exercise their right to health. The public hospital/outpatient unit was the most used service, and PHCU was little sought (AU).

RESUMEN

Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae) is a vector of the bacteria Candidatus Liberibacter americanus (CLam) and Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas), which are phloem-restricted and associated with the most important and destructive worldwide citrus disease, Huanglongbing (HLB). Currently, no cure for HLB has been described. Therefore, measures have focused on reducing D. citri populations. In these insects, cathepsin B (DCcathB) and L (DCcathL) enzymes play an important role in digestion, and are involved in embryogenesis, immune defense, and ecdysis. In this study, we used a CTV-based vector to deliver dsRNA (CTV-dsRNA) into Citrus macrophylla plants targeting DCcathB and DCcathL genes in D. citri that fed on the phloem of these CTV-RNAi infected plants. Subsequently, we evaluated expression of DCcathB and DCcathL genes as well as the Vitellogenin (Vg) gene by RT-qPCR in D. citri fed on CTV-dsRNA occurring in plant phloem. It was found that a defective phenotype in D. citri females as a result of knockdown of DCcathB and DCcathL genes mediated by CTV dsRNA. These results showed that Psyllids fed on plants treated with the CTV-dsRNA exhibited downregulation of the Vg gene, one of the most important genes associated with embryogenic and female development, which was associated with dsRNA-mediated silencing of the two cathepsin genes. Based on our findings, a CTV-based strategy for delivering RNAi via plants that targets DCcathB and DCcathL genes may represent a suitable avenue for development of dsRNA-based tools to manage D. citri that limits the spread of HLB.

RESUMEN

The literature reveals the application of the laws of thermodynamics for predicting life span and the effects of the physical activity level on longevity. But the vastly simplified literature models seem to suggest a reduction in duration of life with increased activity level, which is the opposite of medical recommendations, that means that exercises increase the longevity. The main objectives of this paper are to re-present the previous model, check and confirm the previous results and improve the model by formulating a simplified phenomenological relation between life span, specific entropy generation of the body (SEG-life, in MJ/kg.K) and physical activity level. The model was validated considering different individuals. In this study, it is suggested that the principle of cumulative entropy generation limit should be relaxed in function of lifestyle and type of exercise performed during life, differently from what it is defined by the literature. So, it is proposed a relax to the limit on SEG-life as a result of various physical activity levels.

RESUMEN

Iron oxide nanoparticles have been investigated due to their suitable characteristics for diverse applications in the fields of biomedicine, electronics, water or wastewater treatment and sensors. Maghemite, magnetite and hematite are the most widely studied iron oxide particles and have ferrimagnetic characteristics. When very small, however, these particles have superparamagnetic properties and are called superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs). Several methods are used for the production of these particles, such as coprecipitation, thermal decomposition and microemulsion. However, the variables of the different types of synthesis must be assessed to achieve greater control over the particles produced. In some studies, it is possible to compare the influence of variations in the factors for production with each of these methods. Thus, researchers use different adaptations of synthesis based on each objective and type of application. With coprecipitation, it is possible to obtain smaller, more uniform particles with adjustments in temperature, pH and the types of reagents used in the process. With thermal decomposition, greater control is needed over the time, temperature and proportion of surfactants and organic and aqueous phases in order to produce smaller particles and a narrower size distribution. With the microemulsion process, the control of the confinement of the micelles formed during synthesis through the proportions of surfactant and oil makes the final particles smaller and less dispersed. These nanoparticles can be used as additives for the creation of new materials, such as magnetic bacterial cellulose, which has different innovative applications. Composites that have SPIONs, which are produced with greater rigour with regards to their size and distribution, have superparamagnetic properties and can be used in medical applications, whereas materials containing larger particles have ferromagnetic applications. To arrive at a particular particle with specific characteristics, researchers must be attentive to both the mechanism selected and the production variables to ensure greater quality and control of the materials produced.

RESUMEN

The pirarucu (Arapaima gigas) is a fast-growing Amazonian species of high commercial value. The present study aimed to determine the dietary crude protein (CP) level to promote maximum zootechnical performance for pirarucu fingerlings and as their resistance to Aeromonas hydrophila, as well as evaluate their hematological parameters. Pirarucu fingerlings (2.4 ± 0.08 g, 6.8 ± 0.52 cm) were distributed in 18 tanks (140 L, 40 fish per tank, n = 3) and fed six experimental diets consisting of increasing levels of CP: 300, 400, 450, 500, 550 and 650 g kg-1 in a completely randomized design. Data were submitted to one-way ANOVA (p < 0.05) and the ideal CP level for weight gain was determined using polynomial regression analysis. The dietary CP levels were evaluated using a quadratic polynomial regression and the level of 595 g kg-1 was determined for the best weight gain. The hematocrit of fish fed 300 g kg-1 was higher than in the other groups. No mortalities were observed after the 15-day bacterial challenge; however, number of pirarucu with bacterial damage on the pirarucu caudal fin was higher in the group that was fed the diet with 300 g kg-1. A dietary protein level of 618 g kg-1 is therefore recommended for providing maximum weight gain and immunological resistance in pirarucu fingerlings weighing 2.4-112.5 g.

RESUMEN

Background Chagas disease (CD) presents an ominous prognosis. The predictive value of biomarkers and new echocardiogram parameters in adjusted models have not been well studied. Methods and Results There were 361 patients with chronic CD (57.6% men, 61±11 years of age, clinical forms: indeterminate 27.1%, cardiac 56.6%, digestive 3.6%, cardiodigestive 12.7%) included in this single-center, observational, prospective longitudinal study. Echocardiographic evaluation included strain analyses of left atrial, left ventricular (LV), and right ventricular and 3-dimensional analyses of left atrial and LV volumes. Biomarkers included cardiac troponin I, brain natriuretic peptide, transforming growth factor ß1, tumor necrosis factor, matrix metalloproteinases, and Trypanosoma cruzi polymerase chain reaction. The studied end point was a composite of CD-related mortality, heart transplant, hospital admission due to worsening heart failure, or new cardiac device insertion. Event-free survival was analyzed by multivariable regression analyses adjusted for competing risks. P values <0.05 were considered significant. The composite event occurred in 79 patients after 4.9±2.0 years follow-up. LV end-diastolic volume (hazard ratio [HR], 1.01 [95% CI, 1.00-1.02]; P=0.02), peak negative global atrial strain (HR, 1.08 [95% CI, 1.00-1.17]; P=0.04), LV global circumferential strain (HR, 1.12 [95% CI, 1.04-1.21]; P=0.003), LV torsion (HR, 0.55 [95% CI, 0.35-0.81]; P=0.003), brain natriuretic peptide (HR, 2.03 [95% CI, 1.23-3.34]; P=0.005), and positive T cruzi polymerase chain reaction (HR, 1.80 [95% CI, 1.12-2.91]; P=0.01) were end point predictors independent from age, sex, 2-dimensional echocardiographic indexes, hypertension, previous cardiac device, and CD cardiac form. Conclusions Two-dimensional strain- and 3-dimensional-derived parameters, brain natriuretic peptide, and positive T cruzi polymerase chain reaction can be useful for prediction of CD cardiovascular events.
