RESUMEN

Background: Reduced work readiness is associated with elevated turnover rates, necessitating efforts to enhance the positive work readiness of newly graduated nurses to alleviate the shortage in the nursing workforce. Research into the work readiness of recent nursing graduates in China is still in its infancy. Most studies employ quantitative research methods, and further exploration of the self-perception of work readiness among new nurses in China is required. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate genuine experiences and self-perceptions of work readiness among new graduate nurses. Design: A qualitative descriptive study. Methods: Sixteen new nurses from a provincial tertiary hospital in China were included in this study, which adhered to the consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ) checklist for reporting. The data collection process involved conducting semi-structured interviews from September to October 2021. Inductive content analysis was employed to analyze the interview data. Results: The study identified four themes encompassing new nurses' real-life experiences and self-perceptions of work readiness: psychological stress, emotional conflict, empathy fatigue, and ethical dilemmas. Psychological stress comprised three subthemes: knowledge and skill deficits, communication barriers, and fear. Empathy fatigue was primarily characterized by psychological and physical symptoms. Ethical dilemmas involved conflicts over differences in values and between clinical reality and standardized nursing practice. Conclusion: Drawing from the self-perceptions of work readiness among new nurses found in this study, nursing administrators and educators must enhance the existing transition support program for new nurses. Additionally, the establishment of individualized training programs is recommended to further improve the work readiness of new nurses.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to synthesize the Oral Health Assessment Tool for elderly adults and determine its psychosocial properties. Methods: We conducted a scoping review. The Arkey and O'Malley methodology was employed to conduct scoping reviews involving the exploration of both national and international databases, as well as a manual search of the reference lists of the selected studies. We focused on oral health assessment tools for elderly adults (>60 years). The review report adhered to the standards outlined in the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. The study protocol was officially filed with the Open Science Framework. Results: A total of 19 documents were included. The literature search included a time frame ranging from 1995 to 2023 and covered a diverse range of 13 countries. Of the 19 assessment tools examined, it was found that only the Oral Assessment Sheet had multidimensional characteristics, while the remaining tools were unidimensional in nature. The evaluation of oral health assessment tools was conducted across several contexts, including nursing homes, geriatric facilities, communities, and hospitals. A total of eleven studies underwent reliability testing, whereas two studies were alone validated for validity and did not undergo reliability testing. Additionally, seven studies were exclusively validated for reliability and did not undergo validity testing. Conclusion: Multidimensional oral health assessment tools for elderly adults that integrate social and psychological aspects need to be developed and validated. It is necessary to develop oral health assessment tools based on hospitalized elderly patients to meet the oral and dental health needs of elderly patients.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the potential impact of the Target Management Card on patient safety in the emergency department. Patients and Methods: A mixed method design was developed, combining a one-group pretest-posttest design with a qualitative study. Target Management Cards were formulated for 32 emergency nurse practitioners and focus group interviews were conducted after the intervention. Wilcoxon's signed rank test was used to compare pre-test and post-test scores. The interview data were subject to content analysis. Results: After developing the Target Management Card, there were significant improvements in safety behaviors (Z = 4.709, p < 0.01) and perception of patient safety (Z = 4.257, p < 0.01) among emergency nurse practitioners. The nurses in the focus group interviews agreed that the Target Management Card could improve patient safety by warning and supervising nursing work in the emergency department, promoting a positive change in nurses' attitudes and behaviors toward patient safety. Conclusion: Our study found that nurses and nursing managers jointly formulating Target Management Cards in emergency departments significantly enhances patient safety.
