RESUMEN

Diorhabda rybakowi Weise is one of the dominant pests feeding on Nitraria spp., a pioneer plant used for windbreaking and sand fixation purposes, and poses a threat to local livestock and ecosystems. To clarify the key olfactory genes of D. rybakowi and provide a theoretical basis for attractant and repellent development, the optimal reference genes under two different conditions (tissue and sex) were identified, and the bioinformatics and characterization of the tissue expression profiles of two categories of soluble olfactory proteins (OBPs and CSPs) were investigated. The results showed that the best reference genes were RPL13a and RPS18 for comparison among tissues, and RPL19 and RPS18 for comparison between sexes. Strong expressions of DrybOBP3, DrybOBP6, DrybOBP7, DrybOBP10, DrybOBP11, DrybCSP2, and DrybCSP5 were found in antennae, the most important olfactory organ for D. rybakowi. These findings not only provide a basis for further in-depth research on the olfactory molecular mechanisms of host-specialized pests but also provide a theoretical basis for the future development of new chemical attractants or repellents using volatiles to control D. rybakowi.

Microbial deodorization is a novel strategy for reducing odor in livestock and poultry feces. Herein, 12 strains of ammonia (NH3) and 15 hydrogen sulfide (H2S) removing bacteria were obtained with a removal efficiency of 65.20-79.80% and 34.90-79.70%, respectively. A novel bacteria deodorant named MIX (Bacillus zhangzhouensis, Bacillus altitudinis, and Acinetobacter pittii at a ratio of 1:1:2) were obtained. MIX can shorten the temperature rising stage by 2 days and prolong the thermophilic stage by 4 days. The ability of MIX to remove NH3, H2S, and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and the underlying removal mechanism were analyzed during pig feces fermentation. MIX can significantly reduce the concentrations of NH3 and H2S by 41.82% and 66.35% and increase the concentrations of NO3--N and SO42- by 7.80% and 8.83% (P < 0.05), respectively, on the 25th day. Moreover, the concentrations of acetic, propionate, iso-valerate, and valerate were significantly reduced. The dominant bacteria communities at the phylum level were Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Spirochaetes. B. zhangzhouensis and B. altitudinis could convert NH4+-N to NO3--N, and A. pittii could transfer H2S to SO42-. This study revealed that bacteria deodorant can reduce the concentrations of NH3, H2S, and VFAs in pig feces and increase those of NH4+, NO3-, and SO42- and has excellent potential in deodorizing livestock and poultry feces composting.

Myocardial fibrosis is a pathological phenomenon associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) that plays a crucial role in the development of heart diseases. Vitamin D deficiency can promote the development of CVD and exercise plays a role in the treatment of CVD. This study aimed to explore the effects of 12-week aerobic exercise training on myocardial fibrosis in vitamin D-deficient mice. A vitamin D-deficient mouse model was induced by a vitamin D-deficient (0 IU Vitamin D3/kg) diet. Twenty-four C57BL/6J male mice were randomly divided into three groups: a control sedentary group (CONS, n = 8), a vitamin D-deficient sedentary group (VDDS, n = 8), and a vitamin D-deficient exercise group (VDDE, n = 8) which was aerobically trained for 12 weeks. The results showed that the serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels of the VDDS group were <50 nmol/L, which was significantly lower than that of the CONS group. Compared with the CONS group, the VDDS group showed cardiac dysfunction and significant fibrosis, together with lower vitamin D receptor (VDR) mRNA and protein expression levels, higher mRNA expression levels of profibrotic and inflammatory factors, and higher transforming growth factor-ß1 (TGF-ß1) and phospho-Smad2/3 (P-Smad2/3) protein expression levels. Serum 25(OH)D levels in the VDDE group were significantly higher than those in the VDDS group. Compared with the VDDS group, the VDDE group showed improved cardiac function and alleviated myocardial fibrosis. Meanwhile, the VDDE group had significantly higher VDR mRNA and protein expression levels; lower mRNA expression levels of profibrotic and inflammatory factors; and lower TGF-ß1 and P-Smad2/3 protein expression levels. In conclusion, aerobic exercise training remains a promising intervention for treating myocardial fibrosis in vitamin D deficiency.

To improve the properties of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) and utilize ground granulated blast furnace slag efficiently, this study investigates the effect of fineness on the hydration activity index (HAI) of ground granulated blast furnace slag. The hydration activity index of GGBS with six specific surface areas (SSAs) was characterized by the ratio of compressive strength of the prismatic mortar test block. The particle size distribution of GGBS with different grinding times was tested by laser particle size analyzer. The paste of different specific surface area GGBSs in different curing ages was investigated at the micro level by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive spectrometer, thermogravimetric scanning calorimeter, and differential scanning calorimeter. The effect of particle distribution of GGBS on the hydration activity index of different curing ages was studied by gray correlation analysis. The results indicated that the compressive strength and hydration activity index increases with the increase of a specific surface area of GGBS at different curing ages. The hydration activity index at different curing ages is almost a linear role for specific surface areas. With the increase in the specific surface area of GGBS, the content of Ca(OH)2 in paste decreases gradually. When GGBS was added into a mortar test block, the hydrate calcium silicate gel in paste changed from a high Ca/Si ratio to a low Ca/Si ratio. The 0-10 micron particles of GGBS particle distribution were highly correlated with the hydration activity index at different curing ages.

INTRODUCTION: Patient self-management skills are an important part of heart failure (HF) management. However, there is a lack of knowledge about the effectiveness of nurse-led education on patient self-management and the associated clinical outcomes of rural Chinese patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). As such, this study was designed to evaluate the impact of a nurse-led education program on patient self-management and hospital readmissions in rural Chinese patients with CHF. METHODS: Ninety-six patients in the eastern Chinese province of Shandong with CHF were randomly divided into intervention and control groups. A structured education program was delivered to the intervention group during hospitalization and after discharge. Control group patients were managed as per clinical guidelines without structured education. Medication adherence, dietary modifications, social support, and symptom control were assessed 12 months after the educational intervention. RESULTS: The mean score of medication adherence, dietary modifications, social support and symptom control in the intervention group was higher than in the control group at the end of the study (p<0.01). The readmission rates for HF in the intervention and control group were 10.4% and 27.1%, respectively (p=0.036). CONCLUSIONS: This study has demonstrated that a structured education program was associated with a significant improvement in medication adherence, dietary modifications, social support, and symptom control in rural CHF patients. Furthermore, this program was associated with a significant reduction in hospital readmission. This study indicates that implementation of a nurse-led education program improves self-management and clinical outcomes of rural CHF patients, who may not have regular access to cardiac management services as per metropolitan populations.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of patients' intensive telephone-based care program (PITC) on depression and its correlation with overall survival in patients with coronary artery disease who have depression. METHODS: A total of 224 patients with coronary artery disease who were complicated with depression were allocated randomly to the PITC group and control group in a 1:1 ratio. In the PITC group, PITC and usual care were performed, whereas in the control group, only usual care was given. Depression was assessed using Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-Depression (HADS-D) score and Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) score. RESULTS: No difference in baseline characteristics was found between the PITC and control groups (all P > .05). There were changes the HADS-D score (P = .002) and SDS score (P = .019) from baseline (M0) to month 12 (M12) in the PITC group. Those in the PITC group had a reduced depression rate (assessed by HADS-D score <8 at month 12) (P = .005). As for overall survival analysis, Kaplan-Meier curves revealed that overall survival was numerically longer in the PITC group compared with the control group but displayed no statistical significance (P = .061), whereas patients without depression at month 12 presented with better overall survival compared with patients with depression at month 12, as assessed by HADS-D (P = .041) or SDS (P = .014). CONCLUSIONS: A PITC could serve as an effective means to decrease depression, and it might contribute to favorable overall survival by decreasing depression in patients with coronary artery disease.

Insects may develop different behavioral phenotypes in response to heterogeneous environments (e.g., host plants), but the plasticity of their feeding behaviors has been rarely explored. In order to address the issue, clones of the English grain aphid, Sitobion avenae (Fabricius), were collected from wheat, and their probing behaviors were recorded on three plants. Our results demonstrated that S. avenae individuals on the alternative plants (i.e., barley and oat) tended to have higher frequency of non-probing (Np), increased duration of the pathway phase, increased phloem salivation, and decreased phloem ingestion (E2), compared to those on the source plant (i.e., wheat), showing the resistance of barley and oat to this aphid's feeding. This aphid showed apparently high extents of plasticity for all test probing behaviors on barley or oat. Positive selection for higher extents of plasticity in E2 duration was identified on barley and oat. The factor 'clone' alone explained 30.6% to 70.1% of the total variance for each behavioral plasticity, suggesting that the divergence of probing behavior plasticity in S. avenae had a genetic basis. This aphid's fitness correlated positively with the plasticity of Np frequency and E2 frequency. Some behaviors and their corresponding plasticities (e.g., the frequency of xylem ingestion and its plasticity) were found to be correlated characters, probably reflecting the limits for the evolution of higher extents of behavioral plasticity in this aphid. The differential probing behaviors and their plasticity in S. avenae can have significant implications for the adaptation and management of aphids on different plants.

The apple buprestid beetle, Agrilus mali Matsumura (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), can respond to various volatiles, but the underlying mechanism of odorant perception for this insect is poorly understood. Here, we cloned A. mali's odorant-binding proteins 3 (AmalOBP3) and 8 (AmalOBP8) and characterized their expression patterns and binding profiles. Sequence and phylogenetic analyses showed that AmalOBP3 and AmalOBP8 were distributed in the classic and minus-C OBP subfamily, respectively. AmalOBP3 was specifically and abundantly expressed in antennae of both sexes. AmalOBP8 displayed high transcript levels in antennae of both sexes, abdomens of males, and wings of both sexes. Both AmalOBPs exhibited much higher expression in male antennae than in female antennae, suggesting that they could be important in perception of male-specific olfactory cues (e.g., some sex pheromones). Out of the 40 odorant ligands tested, AmalOBP3 and AmalOBP8 bound to 15 and 21 different odorants, respectively, indicating a distinct and selective binding profile for them. Both AmalOBPs seemed to have very strong binding affinity to aliphatic alcohols and aldehydes with 12 to 15 carbon atoms. Alcohols, esters, and terpenoids were more likely to be good ligands for both AmalOBPs than aldehydes and alkanes. Together with its broad expression in different tissues, strong binding with higher numbers of putative ligands for AmalOPB8 means that this protein can have more extensive functional roles in chemosensation of A. mali. Our results provide insights into the molecular basis of chemosensation in A. mali, as well as a basis for developing detection, monitoring, and management tools for this serious pest.

The apple buprestid beetle, Agrilus mali Matsumura, is an invasive pest causing significant damages to rare wild apple forests of Xinjiang. The morphology, abundance and distribution of antennal sensilla in both sexes of this pest were examined. We found that the antennae of A. mali females were longer than those of males. Five types of antennal sensilla were characterized, including trichodea (subtypes Tr.1, Tr.2, and Tr.3), chaetica (subtypes Sc.1, Sc.2, Sc.3, and Sc.4), basiconica (subtypes Ba. 1, Ba. 2, Ba. 3 and Ba.4), Böhm bristles (subtypes BB. 1, and BB. 2), and multiporous grooved sensilla. The most abundant sensilla of Ba.2 tended to occur mainly on flagellomeres 5-8 in both sexes. The last three flagellomeres tended to have the most abundant Tr.1 in both sexes. Overall, the abundance and distribution of these sensilla appeared to be highly conserved in both sexes, and their olfactory organs seemed to cluster on flagellomeres 6-8. However, some sex dimorphisms were also observed. Tr.3 and BB.2 were found only in females. Sensilla of Sc.2 were found on the pedicel and first two flagellomeres only in males. When compared with males, females showed a higher number of Sc.3, but a lower number of Sc.4 on the pedicel. These results indicate that contact cues could be important in intersexual communication in A. mali. The functional roles of these sensilla and their implications in A. mali behaviors are discussed, and further studies of identified chemosensitive sensilla can provide a foundation for developing semiochemical-based management strategies.

To investigate the knowledge and attitudes of practicing nurses on comfort care for hospitalized patients, a survey was conducted in 311 registered nurses from a major teaching hospital. A total of 212 (68.1%) of the participants showed an adequate knowledge of comfort care. Participants who had 6 years or more working experience returned a higher mean scores on physiological and psychological aspects of comfort care (P < 0.05). The total scores were the highest among participants from intensive care unit and the lowest among participants from the oncology department. Although 282 (90.7%) participants were involved in comfort care, only 210 (67.5%) received formal hospital-based training in this practice. We conclude that there was a large difference in the knowledge between nurses from different departments on comfort care. Continuing education programmes are required to improve the knowledge and skills in comfort care.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the changes and the prognostic value of serum vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A total of 79 patients with DTC and 30 healthy individuals were divided into four groups: (1) a healthy control group (n = 30); (2) DTC without recurrence (n = 35; 23 papillary, 12 follicular); (3) DTC with local recurrence (n = 24; 15 papillary, 9 follicular), and (4) DTC with lung metastasis (n = 20; 13 papillary, 7 follicular). Serum VEGF and thyroglobulin levels were measured in all patients. RESULTS: Serum levels of VEGF were significantly higher in the lung metastasis group than in the other three groups (p < 0.05). Serum thyroglobulin concentration positively correlated with VEGF expression (r = 0.8678, p < 0.001) in patients with thyroid cancer recurrence. Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that clinical staging (OR = 1.851, 95% CI 1.04-3.47; p = 0.038), noncompliance with postoperative thyroxin replacement therapy (OR = 1.935, 95% CI 1.03-3.65; p = 0.042) and postoperative levels of thyroglobulin (OR = 1.892, 95% CI 1.01-3.56, p = 0.032) were independent predictors for thyroid cancer recurrence. Every additional 100 ng/l of serum VEGF levels increased the risk of thyroid cancer recurrence by 20.3%; but this did not reach statistical significance (OR = 1.203, 95% CI 0.95-1.52; p = 0.125). CONCLUSIONS: Serum VEGF increased in patients with recurrent thyroid cancer following surgical therapies. The predictive value of serum VEGF requires further investigation.
