RESUMEN

The development of competitive enzyme immunoassays for ovine plasma LH (oLH) and FSH (oFSH) is described. Standards and plasma samples were preincubated with diluted antiserum to oLH or oFSH and the reacted solution (100 micro l per well) was transferred to plates previously coated with oLH or oFSH, respectively. The second antibody used was anti-rabbit IgG horseradish peroxidase. The measuring range was 0.39-50 ng/ml for each hormone and the 50% relative binding sensitivity was 9 ng/ml for oLH. The respective value for oFSH was 3.5 or 34 ng/ml with different hormone and antibody preparations used for the assay. The enzyme immunoassays were used to determine oLH and oFSH levels in plasma from ewes of two breeds during the oestrous cycle. The assays detected the first FSH surge coincident with the LH surge, the second FSH surge about 24 h later and the periodic fluctuations of FSH concentrations during the luteal phase of the oestrous cycle. These enzyme immunoassays are an efficient and economic alternative to the established radioimmunoassays (RIA) for oLH and oFSH.

The clinically healthy testicles and epididymides of 31 rams were imaged inside and outside the breeding period, by using a real time ultrasound scanner. A scanning technique based on multiple imaging planes from the caudal and the lateral surface of the genitalia was employed. Optimum imaging was achieved by using a 6.0 MHz frequency sector transducer. The testicular parenchyma appeared homogeneous with a coarse medium echo-pattern. The mediastinum testis was present in 87% of rams and 77% of testicles; its median echogenicity score was 2 (range: 0-3) among rams aged 13 months or older and 1 among rams aged less than 13 months (P = 0.001). The tail of the epididymis was always clearly visible; it appeared less echoic than the testicular parenchyma and with a heterogeneous structure. The epididymal body was not visible, whilst the epididymal head was consistently partially imaged. The pampiniform plexus was clearly imaged as a dome-shaped structure masking the upper part of the head of the epididymis. The scrotal septum was seen in lateral sonograms as a highly echogenic line between the testicles. The scrotal skin formed a thick hyper-echoic peripheral structure.

RESUMEN

We report on a case of Borjeson-Forssman-Lehmann syndrome (BFS) in which two sisters appear with the clinical picture of severe mental handicap, dysmorphic features and grand mal seizures. Their mother presents the above symptomatology in a milder degree. It is one of the few reports in literature where females develop BFS in its typical clinical form.

Various immunological parameters (IgA, IgG, IgM serum levels, C3 and C4 complement components and T and B lymphocytes and T-lymphocyte subsets) were determined in 50 patients with epilepsy (20 without medication, 15 on carbamazepine and 15 on valproate) and in 20 controls. The epileptic group had fewer CD4 and more CD8 lymphocytes, while the CD4/CD8 ratio was lower; the levels of IgG and IgM were increased and C4 complement component was also decreased. Patients without medication showed all the above mentioned abnormalities. Patients on carbamazepine had a lower CD4/CD8 ratio, increased IgG and IgM levels and decreased C4 complement component while patients on valproate had more CD8 lymphocytes, a lower CD4/CD8 ratio, increased levels of IgM and decreased C4 complement component. Our results indicate that there is a defective immune mechanism in epileptic patients modified by treatment.

The effect of gossypol content of cottonseed cake given as a source of CP in lamb (n = 8) rations was examined on the following blood parameters: plasma total protein, albumin, globulins, urea, glucose, hematocrit, hemoglobin, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentrations. The diets were isonitrogenous and isocaloric and contained 0, 15, and 30% cottonseed cake for 62 d. Blood samples were taken at the beginning, middle, and end of the experiment. Plasma total protein and globulins were higher at d 30 of the experimental period, but plasma albumin concentration, hematocrit, and hemoglobin were higher at the beginning of the experiment; plasma urea concentration was higher at d 60, and plasma glucose concentration was lower at d 30 of the experiment. The highest fraction in all treatments was albumin, followed by alpha 2-globulin and beta-globulin fractions, and there was no gamma 1-globulin fraction at d 30 and 60 of the experimental period. Liver examination showed significant differences in free gossypol content and accumulation, total N, and total protein percentage among the three treatments. Gossypol toxicity was not observed. The absence of gossypol toxicity in these animals has been attributed to detoxification of free gossypol by the formation of gossypol-protein complex in the rumen.
