RESUMEN

To explore the effects of different intercropping species on growth, nutrition absorption, and fruit quality of oriental melon, we examined plant height, stem diameter, root activity, contents of mineral elements (N, P, K, Ca and Mg), and fruit quality and yield of oriental melon under the oriental melon monoculture (MM), intercropping of fennel/oriental melon (FM), tillered-onion/oriental melon (TM), or wormwood/oriental melon (WM). Results showed that plant height of intercropping treatments was significantly higher than that of the monoculture over time. The stem diameter of the FM and TM treatments was significantly higher than that of the MM treatment, while there was no significant difference between the WM and MM treatments. At the stretch tendril stage, fruit setting stage, and fruit expanding stage, root activity of FM treatment was significantly higher than that of MM and TM treatments. The mine-ral elements contents of oriental melon plants in three intercropping treatments were higher than that in MM treatment in different degrees, with the mine-ral elements contents of FM treatment being higher than that of TM and WM treatments. The single fruit weights of FM and TM treatments did not differ from the MM treatment. The fruit quality indices of FM treatment were not lower than MM treatment, while some fruit quality indices (including the contents of glucose, fructose, and sucrose) of WM and TM treatments were lower than that under MM treatment. In summary, fennel was a suitable species for intercropping with the oriental melon.

AIM: To investigate the potential antidepressant and anxiolytic effects of Neu-P11, a novel melatonin agonist, in two models of depression in rats and a model of anxiety in mice. METHODS: In the learned helplessness test (LH), Neu-P11 or melatonin (25-100 mg/kg, ip) was administered to rats 2 h before the beginning of the dark phase once a day for 5 days and the number of escape failures and intertrial crossings during the test phase were recorded. In the forced swimming test (FST), rats received a single or repeated administration of Neu-P11 (25-100 mg/kg, ip). The total period of immobility during the test phase was assessed. In the elevated plus-maze test (EPM), mice were treated with Neu-P11 (25-100 mg/kg, ip) or melatonin in the morning or in the evening and tested 2 h later. The percentage of time spent in the open arms and the open arms entries were assessed. RESULTS: In the LH test, Neu-P11 but not melatonin significantly decreased the escape deficit and had no effect on the intertrial crossings. In the FST, a single or repeated administration of Neu-P11, either in the morning or in the evening, significantly decreased the duration of immobility. In the EPM test, Neu-P11 significantly increased the percentage of time spent in the open arms and the open arms entries irrespective to the time of administration. Melatonin was effective only when administered in the afternoon. CONCLUSION: The results demonstrate that Neu-P11 exerts antidepressant and anxiolytic activities in rodent models.

AIM: To establish a method to detect the expression of the tumor specific growth factor TSGF, CA242 and CA19-9 in serum and evaluate their value in diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. METHODS: ELISA and Biochemical colorimetric assay were used to detect the serum content of TSGF, CA242 and CA19-9 in 200 normal cases, 52 pancreatitis patients and 96 pancreatic cancer patients. RESULTS: The positive likelihood ratios of TSGF, CA242 and CA19-9 were 5.4, 12.6 and 6.3, respectively, and their negative likelihood ratios were 0.10, 0.19 and 0.17, respectively. With single tumor marker diagnosed pancreatic cancer, the highest sensitivity and specificity of TSGF were 91.6% and 93.5%. In combined test with 3 markers, when all of them were positive, the sensitivity changed to 77.0% and the specificity and the positive predictive value were 100%. The levels of TSGF and CA242 were significantly higher in the patients with pancreatic cancer of head than those in the patients with pancreatic cancer of body, tail and whole pancreas, but the expression of CA19-9 had no correlation with the positions of the pancreatic cancer. The sensitivity of TSGF, CA242 and CA19-9 was increased with the progress in stages of pancreatic cancer. In stage I, the sensitivity of TSGF was markedly higher than CA242 and CA19-9. CONCLUSION: The combined use of TSGF, CA242 and CA19-9 expressions can elevate the specificity for pancreatic cancer diagnosis. And it shows that it plays an important role to differentiate positions and tissue typing. It is a forepart diagnosis for the pancreatic cancer by combination checking. There is very important correlation between the three markers and the pancreatic cancer.
