Course Review: The Griffin Institute Basic Microsurgery Workshop.

ABSTRACT: Microsurgery is an important skill for plastic and reconstructive surgeons, in addition to a number of other surgical specialties. It is one that requires a high level of surgical precision and prolonged training period with a significant learning curve. Consequently, because of the potential risk of patient morbidity, the need for high-quality simulation models is self-evident.The Griffin Institute Basic Microsurgical Workshop, in London, United Kingdom, is a 5-day practical course that uses the live rat animal training model. It provides candidates the opportunity to learn and develop microsurgical techniques through a comprehensive set of exercises with the aim of acquiring competencies before clinical practice. Here, we provide a critical evaluation of the course.

ABSTRACT: Burn injuries are well-recognized global public health crises that often result in devastating injuries. Despite being the fourth most common cause of trauma worldwide, many clinicians are often not comfortable with the management of severe burns, and it is not uncommon for large burns to be mismanaged.The emergency management of severe burns course is a 1-day course offering delegates the opportunity to improve their knowledge and confidence with the initial assessment and management of acute severe burns. The course is valued at £295 GBP ($382) per delegate and takes place at multiple locations around the globe. We feel this course would be beneficial to all health care professionals who play a vital role in assessment and management of severe burns.

Course Review: Mid Yorkshire Plastic Surgery Course-Essential Plastic Surgery Skills for Junior Doctors.

ABSTRACT: Plastic surgery is niche surgical speciality that is not very well covered in curricula of many medical schools around the world. Junior doctors often feel underprepared and unskilled to deal with basic plastic surgery trauma that commonly presents to the emergency department. Most junior doctors have had very limited or no exposure to common plastic surgery procedures. Simulation training would be one effective way of preparing for such placements.The Mid Yorkshire Plastic Surgery Course, accredited by the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgeons, is an interactive 2-day course that takes place in Wakefield, UK. The Mid Yorkshire Plastic Surgery Course provides delegates with learning opportunities via short, concise lectures followed by longer practical workshops enabling application of theory into immediate practice. It focuses on fundamental plastic surgery skills required to perform key index operating procedures required for entry into higher specialist surgical training. A comprehensive evaluation of this course is conducted in this review.
