RESUMEN

This paper presents a what we believe is a novel method to fabricate turnaround point long-period gratings (TAP-LPGs) possessing enhanced thermal stability and high sensitivity. It is shown by analysis and by experiment that LPG resonance in photosensitive fibers can be controlled partially by UV fluence and thermal annealing. TAP-LPGs with enhanced thermal stability were fabricated by following three steps: (I) finding grating period versus writing UV fluence for TAP operation; (II) writing gratings at a relatively higher period with higher fluence, in which case the resonance is out of phase; (III) controlled annealing so that the postannealed LPG operates at/near TAP. The thermal stability is enhanced. The average temperature sensitivity of dual peak resonance measured for a typical TAP-LPG in the temperature interval of 70°C-240°C is about 2.3 nm/°C. This study will be useful for the development of high temperature TAP-LPG sensors.

RESUMEN

Substance P binds to the Neurokinin-1 (NK-1) receptors found in the emetic center of the central nervous system (CNS) to induce emesis. Maropitant is a selective NK-1 receptor antagonist that inhibits the binding of substance P to NK-1 receptors and is commonly used to prevent and treat vomiting in dogs. This review study aimed to discuss and analyze the therapeutic potential of substance P (Neurokinin-1 receptor) antagonist with a particular focus on the drug maropitant in canine medicine. A systematic literature review was performed to identify the existing literature on the subject during the past 20 years (2001-2021) using such databases as ScienceDirect, PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar. The initial search identified 173 articles; however, 41 articles were selected for further analysis, based on the specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. Studies have already confirmed the role of substance P and NK-1 receptors in central pain processing, intestinal smooth muscle contraction, vasodilation, and neurogenic inflammation. Maropitant is one of the most effective veterinary antiemetic drugs that work well against peripheral and central stimuli that trigger the vomiting center. It has been already demonstrated that the therapeutic efficacy of maropitant for managing acute vomiting in dogs is associated with pancreatitis, gastritis, and parvoviral enteritis. It can also prevent and treat chemotherapy-induced emesis and delay the signs of nausea and adverse gastrointestinal effects. Regarding the broad-spectrum antiemetic activity of maropitant, it can be recommended for managing uremic vomiting in dogs. In addition, it has also exhibited an anesthetic sparing effect since the dogs treated with maropitant require a slightly lower percentage of isoflurane as an inhalational anesthetic. The NK-1 receptors are also identified in different areas of the pain pathways. Therefore, NK-1 receptor antagonists might be effective for managing visceral pain. However, further studies are required to establish the broad therapeutic potential of NK-1 receptor antagonist drugs, such as maropitant in canine medicine. It has been shown that the pain associated with the subcutaneous administration of maropitant is due to metacresol, a preservative used in some formulations. Therefore, the side effects can be eliminated by developing novel maropitant formulations specifically for dogs.

RESUMEN

Two-step selective photoionization of lithium isotopes is carried out in a hollow cathode (HC) discharge lamp using a nitrogen-laser-pumped homemade tunable dye laser (∼0.2 cm-1, 7 ns, 640-680 nm). The HC lamp is developed in-house and used as a lithium ion source as well as a detector. The dark space region of HC discharge is illuminated by a dye laser exciting pulse followed by an ionizing radiation from the nitrogen laser. The high electric field (∼kV/cm) present in HC dark space is exploited for fast charge collection, produced by the simultaneous interaction of exciting and ionizing laser beams with sputtered lithium atoms, enabling the detection of photoionization signal. Photoionization signals with a high signal-to-noise ratio are obtained without using any amplifier. Effects of the ionizing laser pulse energy and the precise tuning of the dye laser on lithium photoionization signal, across 670.780 nm (S1/22→P1/2,3/22) transition, are studied. The fine structure of lithium is clearly identified, and its two isotopes (Li7,6) are fairly resolved in the measured photoionization spectrum. Using a saturation technique, the photoionization cross section and the number density of lithium atoms for the Li7 (P3/22) excited level are also measured as 18.5±2.4 Mb, N0∼1.7×109 (atoms/cm3). The results obtained infer that HC-lamp-based photoionization is an easier and cost-effective way of selective photoionization of lithium atoms, and it can be applied for other elements also.

RESUMEN

Development of a demountable and see-through hollow cathode (HC) discharge lamp suitable for optogalvanic (OG) spectroscopy is described. The design of the HC lamp is simple, compact, and inexpensive. Lithium, investigated rarely by the OG method, is selected for cathode material as its isotopes are important for nuclear industry. The HC lamp is characterized electrically and optically for discharge oscillations free OG effect. Strong OG signals of lithium as well as neon (as buffer gas) are produced precisely upon copper vapor laser pumped tunable dye laser irradiation. The HC lamp is capable of generating a clean OG resonance spectrum in the available dye laser wavelength scanning range (627.5-676 nm) obtained with 4-(Dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-(4-dimethylaminostyryl)-4H-pyran dye. About 28 resonant OG lines are explicitly observed. Majority of them have been identified using j-l coupling scheme and assigned to the well-known neon transitions. One line that corresponds to wavelength near about 670.80 nm is assigned to lithium and resolved for its fine (2S1/2 → 2P1/2, 3/2) transitions. These OG transitions allow 0.33 cm-1 accuracy and can be used to supplement the OG transition data available from other sources to calibrate the wavelength of a scanning dye laser with precision at atomic levels.

RESUMEN

Antioxidants are agents which can modulate oxidant-antioxidant profile of body system by neutralizing pro-oxidant molecules. The current scientific knowledge on mechanisms of antioxidant activity of biomolecules was critically reviewed with a special emphasis on immunomodulation. The immuno-oxidative wreckage of animals in various disease conditions and the role of biomodulators in curbing the oxidative stress through immune pathways were analyzed. The critical role of immunomodulatory mechanisms in controlling oxidative damage was identified. Selection of antioxidant therapy considering the immunopharmacology of the drug as well as immunological basis of disease may reduce treatment failure and adverse health effects. Hence, it is suggested that future studies on antioxidants may focus on the immuno-oxidative pathobiology to better understand its clinical effects and effective disease management.

RESUMEN

We report Doppler-free spectroscopy of neutral europium carried out using the saturation absorption technique. In the present experiment, Eu/Ne hollow cathode discharge is used as an atomic vapor source of europium. The Eu transition 4f76s2(S87/2°)→4f76s6p(P89/2) at 601.815 nm and 4f75d6s(aD1013/2°)→4f75d6p(zD811/2) at 580.027 nm are investigated. The frequency separation between the adjacent hyperfine transitions as well as hyperfine structure (HFS) constants are calculated from the obtained experimental spectra. The HFS constant obtained for the state 4f76s6p(P89/2) are A151=664.8 MHz; B151=293.5 MHz, and for state 4f75d6p(zD811/2), the values are A151=7.6 MHz; B151=-60 MHz. These obtained values are in good agreement with the results reported in the literature using laser induced atomic beam fluorescence technique.

RESUMEN

Laser-assisted Penning ionization (LAPI) is detected in a Ne/Eu hollow cathode (HC) discharge lamp using the pulsed optogalvanic (OG) method. In the Ne/Eu discharge, doubly ionized europium excited energy levels Eu[4f(7)(P(7/2,5/2)6)] lie within the thermal limit (∼kT) from the laser-excited neon's energy level [2p(5)(P3/202)3p or 2p(8) (in Paschen notation)] lying at 149,848 cm(-1). Therefore, Penning ionization (PI) of europium atoms likely to occur into its highly excited ionic states is investigated. To probe the PI of europium, the temporal profiles of its counterpart neon OG signal are studied as a function of discharge current for the transitions (1s(4)→2p(8)) and (1s(2)→2p(2)), corresponding to 650.65 and 659.89 nm wavelengths, respectively. It is observed that PI of europium alters the overall discharge characteristics significantly and, hence, modifies the temporal profile of the OG signals accordingly. The quasi-resonant ionizing energy transfer collisions between laser-excited Ne 2p(8) atoms and electronically excited europium P(9/2)10 atoms are used to explain the LAPI mechanism. Such LAPI studies carried out in HC discharge could be useful for the discharge of a metal-vapor laser with appropriate Penning mixtures.

RESUMEN

The optogalvanic (OG) effect has been observed in a Eu/Ne hollow cathode discharge lamp using pulsed laser irradiation. An OG spectrum is recorded in dye laser wavelength region 574602 nm using a boxcar-averager. In total 41 atomic lines are observed. Of these, 38 lines are assigned to neon transitions. Two lines observed corresponding to wavelengths 576.519 and 601.815 nm are assigned to europium transitions; (4f 7 6s 2 , S 8 7/2 →4f 7 6s6p , zP 6 7/2 ) and (4f 7 6s 2 , S 8 7/2 →4f 7 6s6p , zP 8 9/2 ), respectively, and the remaining line at 582.475 nm could not be assigned. The effect of the discharge current on europium as well as neon OG signals is also studied. At moderate discharge current values, an extra positive peak is observed in neon OG signal for the transition (1s 5 →2p 2 ) at 588.189 nm, which is explained by Penning-ionization process using the quasi-resonant energy transfer interactions between excited neon and europium atoms lying in 2p 2 and D 10 9/2 states, respectively.

RESUMEN

This paper presents an experiment and analysis on the factors affecting nonlinear evolution of Bragg wavelength with change in temperature in typical bare and embedded fiber Bragg grating-based (FBG) temperature sensors. The purpose of the study was to find the constants in the function required to evaluate temperature from Bragg wavelength shift. The temperature sensitivity of bare FBGs was found to increase with temperature elevation, and is different for FBGs written in different fiber types. The average temperature sensitivity increased by about 20% when the bare FBG temperature was elevated from 25°C to 525°C. The average temperature sensitivity of the embedded FBG sensor, investigated in the temperature range of 30°C-90°C, was a factor of 2-3 times larger than for bare FBG, depending on its fastened length with the substrate. Analytically, it is shown that the nonuniform behavior of temperature sensitivity in bare FBGs is the result of both the thermal expansion effect of the fiber and the temperature derivatives of the effective refractive index. The strain transfer and temperature coefficients of thermal expansion of the substrate affect the nonuniform behavior of temperature sensitivity in embedded FBG sensors.

RESUMEN

In this paper, a new dye cell for transverse pumping was designed, modeled, and its performance in a narrow spectral width dispersive resonator, pumped by a high repetition rate copper vapor laser, was investigated. The scheme essentially involves the profiling of the cubical glass and stainless steel cylindrical surface such that convex-plano contour be present near the optical pumping region. The design is an amalgamation of straight and curved periphery to enhance the dye solution flow stabilities near the dye laser axis. A computational fluid dynamics analysis of the liquid flow through this dye cell has been carried out. The dye laser outputs such as optical average power, spectral width and wavelength stability, tuning range, pulse shape, through this new dye cell was evaluated. The dye laser average power about 30 mW was fairly steady over the observation period of more than an hour. The dye laser short-term (1 min) spectral width was within 0.824 ± 0.075 GHz, while, in a long-term, more than an hour, drifted by about 180 MHz. The dye laser wavelength in short-term fluctuates within ±0.0065 nm whereas in a long-term, more than an hour, drifted by about 0.0105 nm. The dye laser tuning range was 10 nm with a sub GHz spectral width operation. The pulse shape of the dye laser follows the pump laser pulse profile. Thus, the dye laser has demonstrated fairly long-term stability, without the use of either low expansion material or close loop control on the output.

RESUMEN

Vibrational lifetimes of hydrogen and deuterium related bending modes in semiconductors are measured by transient bleaching spectroscopy and high-resolution infrared absorption spectroscopy. We find that the vibrational lifetimes follow a universal frequency-gap law; i.e., the decay time increases exponentially with increasing decay order, with values ranging from 1 ps for a one-phonon process to 265 ps for a four-phonon process. The temperature dependence of the lifetime shows that the bending mode decays by lowest-order multiphonon process. Our results provide new insights into vibrational decay and the giant isotope effect of hydrogen in semiconductor systems.

RESUMEN

Free radicals are implicated in various chronic diseases. There has always been a search for new antioxidants. In this paper we have investigated Tamra bhasma, a metallic ayurvedic preparation. It is a time-tested medicine in Ayurveda and is in clinical use for various ailments specifically the free radical mediated diseases. Our results show that Tamra bhasma inhibits lipid peroxidation (LPO), prevents the rate of aerial oxidation of reduced glutathione (GSH) content and induces the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) in rat liver homogenate in the bi-phasic manner. The drug was orally given for 7, 15 and 30 days in different doses. Best protective response was found at the dose of 0.5mg/100g body weight in albino rats, although it showed some histopathological changes at the dose of 20mg/100g body weight. The results suggest that this Ayurvedic preparation is not merely a source of copper metal, but it is a strong anti-oxidant with no detectable adverse effect in lower doses of therapeutic range.

RESUMEN

The results of a study on the spatial coherence of a generalized diffraction-filtered resonator (GDFR) copper vapor laser (CVL) for various magnifications are presented. The coherence width and output power are compared with that of unstable resonators (UR's) of equivalent magnifications. It is established, by use of reversal shear interferometry, that the GDFR CVL beam has better spatial coherence and average power characteristics than the UR CVL beam for equivalent resonator magnifications.

RESUMEN

Nowadays many drug industries are manufacturing a number of oil formulations and which are not assessable to know the specific Pakas (stage) of oil preparation. In Ayurveda five stages have been mentioned for medicated oils, these Ama, Mridu, Madhya Khara and Dadgha Paka, Medicated oils obtained by Mridu, Madhya Khara and Dadgha Paka, are considered to be of therapeutic value and are advocated for clinical usage but those obtained by Ama and Dadgha pakas are not recommended. Most of the pharmacies are marketing the oils only by name but are not mentioning the Paka. In order to standardize these pakas with scientific explanation a oil preparation called Ksheerabala taila is selected for the study.
