Introduction: Kaposi's varicelliform eruption (KVE), also known as eczema herpeticum or eczema vaccinatum, is an acute dermatosis that affects patients with chronic dermatopathies. The diagnosis is primarily clinical and is characterised by the presence of a vesicular exanthema on physical examination. The exanthema subsequently evolves into crusted lesions with typical circular ulcerations in 'punched-out' areas on the skin affected by the underlying dermatopathy. Case description: We present the case of a 6-year-old patient who presented to the Paediatric Emergency department with skin lesions consistent with eczema herpeticum. The patient's management was initially outpatient; however, due to the slow progression of the condition, hospitalisation and intravenous antiviral treatment were initiated. Discussion: KVE affects patients with chronic dermatoses, especially atopic dermatitis. It is important to know the clinical presentation for an early suspicion. KVE is a medical emergency that requires prompt diagnosis and treatment. It can progress to secondary viraemia, which can be fatal in up to 10% of immunocompetent individuals and up to 50% of immunocompromised individuals. It is important to be aware of this condition and to start early treatment with antivirals, especially given the high prevalence of atopic dermatitis in our population. This condition is one of the most serious complications that can occur in these patients. LEARNING POINTS: To facilitate early suspicion and diagnosis, disseminate information about eczema vaccinatum.Emphasise the importance of initiating antiviral treatment early to prevent potential complications of eczema herpeticum.If left untreated, Kaposi's varicelliform eruption can result in up to a 10% mortality rate in immunocompetent individuals and a 50% mortality rate in those who are immunocompromised.

BACKGROUND Tarsometatarsal joint (TMJ) arthrodesis is common method used for correcting hallux abductus valgus (HAV). Its popularity has grown due to studies revealing HAV's triplanar deformity with frontal plane rotation. This case report presents a 28-year-old woman with Down syndrome, congenital heart disease, and a history of knee surgery and plantar fasciitis, with severe HAV deformity and flexible valgus flatfoot associated with ligamentous hyperlaxity. CASE REPORT Examination revealed severe foot deformities, and radiographic studies confirmed the condition. A surgical intervention was planned, and the patient's cardiologist confirmed she was fit for the procedure. The modified Lapidus technique with frontal plane rotational correction included realigning the metatarsal joint, resecting spurs, osteosynthesis material, and arthrosis in the sinus tarsi. After surgery, the patient underwent a recovery period without support for 8 weeks and received appropriate medical care. Radiographs showed successful alignment, and the patient gradually resumed her daily activities. The patient had an uneventful recovery, and postoperative radiographs showed good alignment in all planes. CONCLUSIONS The hyperlaxity associated with Down syndrome makes the incidence of HAV more frequent, and TMJ fusion is preferable to correction by osteotomy. The modified Lapidus technique with frontal plane rotational correction could be a good technique to achieve satisfactory correction in patients with severe HAV deformity and flexible valgus flatfoot associated with ligamentous hyperlaxity. TMJ fusion is indicated when severe or recurrent rotational component is observed in X-rays.

Polylactic Acid (PLA) and Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) are commonly used polymers in 3D printing for biomedical applications. Dental Pulp Stem Cells (DPSCs) are an accessible and proliferative source of stem cells with significant differentiation potential. Limited knowledge exists regarding the biocompatibility and genetic safety of ABS and PLA when in contact with DPSCs. This study aimed to investigate the impact of PLA and ABS on the adhesion, proliferation, osteogenic differentiation, genetic stability, proteomics, and immunophenotypic profile of DPSCs. A total of three groups, 1- DPSC-control, 2- DPSC+ABS, and 3- DPSC+PLA, were used in in vitro experiments to evaluate cell morphology, proliferation, differentiation capabilities, genetic stability, proteomics (secretome), and immunophenotypic profiles regarding the interaction between DPSCs and polymers. Both ABS and PLA supported the adhesion and proliferation of DPSCs without exhibiting significant cytotoxic effects and maintaining the capacity for osteogenic differentiation. Genetic stability, proteomics, and immunophenotypic profiles were unaltered in DPSCs post-contact with these polymers, highlighting their biosafety. Our findings suggest that ABS and PLA are biocompatible with DPSCs and demonstrate potential in dental or orthopedic applications; the choice of the polymer will depend on the properties required in treatment. These promising results stimulate further studies to explore the potential therapeutic applications in vivo using prototyped polymers in personalized medicine.

Dimethyl fumarate is an ester from the Krebs cycle intermediate fumarate. This drug is approved and currently used for the treatment of psoriasis and multiple sclerosis, and its anti-angiogenic activity was reported some years ago. Due to the current clinical relevance of this compound and the recently manifested importance of endothelial cell metabolism on the angiogenic switch, we wanted to elucidate whether dimethyl fumarate has an effect on energetic metabolism of endothelial cells. Different experimental approximations were performed in endothelial cells, including proteomics, isotope tracing and metabolomics experimental approaches, in this work we studied the possible role of dimethyl fumarate in endothelial cell energetic metabolism. We demonstrate for the first time that dimethyl fumarate promotes glycolysis and diminishes cell respiration in endothelial cells, which could be a consequence of a down-regulation of serine and glycine synthesis through inhibition of PHGDH activity in these cells. Dimethyl fumarate alters the energetic metabolism of endothelial cells in vitro and in vivo through an unknown mechanism, which could be the cause or the consequence of its pharmacological activity. This new discovery on the targets of this compound could open a new field of study regarding the mechanism of action of dimethyl fumarate.

Acute oxygen (O2) sensing and adaptation to hypoxia are essential for physiological homeostasis. The prototypical acute O2 sensing organ is the carotid body, which contains chemosensory glomus cells expressing O2-sensitive K+ channels. Inhibition of these channels during hypoxia leads to cell depolarization, transmitter release, and activation of afferent sensory fibers terminating in the brain stem respiratory and autonomic centers. Focusing on recent data, here we discuss the special sensitivity of glomus cell mitochondria to changes in O2 tension due to Hif2α-dependent expression of several atypical mitochondrial electron transport chain subunits and enzymes. These are responsible for an accelerated oxidative metabolism and the strict dependence of mitochondrial complex IV activity on O2 availability. We report that ablation of Epas1 (the gene coding Hif2α) causes a selective downregulation of the atypical mitochondrial genes and a strong inhibition of glomus cell acute responsiveness to hypoxia. Our observations indicate that Hif2α expression is required for the characteristic metabolic profile of glomus cells and provide a mechanistic explanation for the acute O2 regulation of breathing.

Traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating condition without an effective therapy. Cellular therapies are among the promising treatment strategies. Adult stem cells, such as mesenchymal stem cells, are often used clinical research for their immunomodulatory and regenerative potential. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of human adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ADSC) infusion through the cauda equina in rats with SCI. The human ADSC from bariatric surgery was isolated, expanded, and characterized. Wistar rats were subjected to blunt SCI and were divided into four groups. Two experimental groups (EG): EG1 received one ADSC infusion after SCI, and EG2 received two infusions, the first one after SCI and the second infusion seven days after the injury. Control groups (CG1 and CG2) received infusion with a culture medium. In vivo, cell tracking was performed 48 h and seven days after ADSC infusion. The animals were followed up for 40 days after SCI, and immunohistochemical quantification of myelin, neurons, and astrocytes was performed. Cellular tracking showed cell migration towards the injury site. ADSC infusion significantly reduced neuronal loss, although it did not prevent the myelin loss or enhance the area occupied by astrocytes compared to the control group. The results were similar when comparing one or two cell infusions. The injection of ADSC distal to the injured area was shown to be a safe and effective method for cellular administration in spinal cord injury.

An adequate supply of oxygen (O2) is essential for most life forms on earth, making the delivery of appropriate levels of O2 to tissues a fundamental physiological challenge. When O2 levels in the alveoli and/or blood are low, compensatory adaptive reflexes are produced that increase the uptake of O2 and its distribution to tissues within a few seconds. This paper analyzes the most important acute vasomotor responses to lack of O2 (hypoxia): hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV) and hypoxic vasodilation (HVD). HPV affects distal pulmonary (resistance) arteries, with its homeostatic role being to divert blood to well ventilated alveoli to thereby optimize the ventilation/perfusion ratio. HVD is produced in most systemic arteries, in particular in the skeletal muscle, coronary, and cerebral circulations, to increase blood supply to poorly oxygenated tissues. Although vasomotor responses to hypoxia are modulated by endothelial factors and autonomic innervation, it is well established that arterial smooth muscle cells contain an acute O2 sensing system capable of detecting changes in O2 tension and to signal membrane ion channels, which in turn regulate cytosolic Ca2+ levels and myocyte contraction. Here, we summarize current knowledge on the nature of O2 sensing and signaling systems underlying acute vasomotor responses to hypoxia. We also discuss similarities and differences existing in O2 sensors and effectors in the various arterial territories.

Background and Objectives: To determine the most commonly used patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) in exercise-induced leg pain (EILP) and to identify specific PROMs for EILP in order to evaluate their psychometric properties and methodological quality. Materials and Methods: A strategic search was performed in different databases to identify and extract the characteristics of studies based on the use of PROMs in patients with EILP. Specific PROMs were evaluated according to the Terwee et al. and COSMIN criteria. Results: Fifty-six studies were included in the review. The Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome Score (MTSSS), Lower Extremity Functional Scale (LEFS) and Exercise-Induced Leg Pain Questionnaire (EILP-Q) were identified as specific PROMs for EILP. The Visual Analog Scale (VAS) was the most widely used instrument in the assessment of EILP. The methodological quality assessment showed six positive values for the LEFS, four for the MTSSS and three for the EILP-Q for the eight psychometric properties analyzed according to the COSMIN criteria. The evaluation of the nine psychometric properties according to Terwee showed five positive values for the LEFS and MTSSS, and three for the EILP-Q. Conclusions: The overall methodological quality of the PROMs used was low. The VAS was the most widely used instrument in the assessment of EILP, and the LEFS was the highest quality PROM available for EILP, followed by the MTSSS and EILP-Q, respectively.

OBJECTIVES: To cross-culturally adapt and validate a Spanish version of the Exercise-Induced Leg Pain questionnaire. DESIGN: Clinical measurement study. PARTICIPANTS: The validity and reliability of the adapted version were assessed in four groups of 40 patients with exercise-induced leg pain, 40 physically active healthy individuals (control group), 40 athletes with other leg conditions and 40 athletes, military personnel and candidates with no history of injury (risk group). MAIN MEASURE: Exercise-Induced Leg Pain questionnaire. REFERENCE MEASURES: Spanish version of the Short-Form 36 and Schepsis postsurgical classification scale. RESULTS: In patients with exercise-induced leg pain, the mean age was 24.9 (± 6.7) years and the mean score of the questionnaire was 62.8 (± 10.9). The standard error of measurement and minimum detectable change threshold were 1.67 and 4.63 points, respectively. Excellent internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.942) and test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.995) were found. The exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses indicated that a one-factor solution explained 66.84% of the variance. For construct validity, 87.5% of the previously stated hypotheses were fulfilled between the total score of the questionnaire and Short-Form 36 dimensions. Concurrent validity, assessed by the Schepsis scale, was almost perfect (r = 0.92, p < 0.001). The predictive validity of the questionnaire was demonstrated using the receiving operating curve (area of 0.992; 95% CI: 0.983-1, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The Spanish version of the Exercise-Induced Leg Pain questionnaire resulted in a reliable and valid instrument to assess patients with exercise-induced leg pain.

Significance: Acute responses to hypoxia are essential for the survival of mammals. The carotid body (CB), the main arterial chemoreceptor, contains glomus cells with oxygen (O2)-sensitive K+ channels, which are inhibited during hypoxia to trigger adaptive cardiorespiratory reflexes. Recent Advances: In this review, recent advances in molecular mechanisms of acute O2 sensing in CB glomus cells are discussed, with a special focus on the signaling role of mitochondria through regulating cellular redox status. These advances have been achieved thanks to the use of genetically engineered redox-sensitive green fluorescent protein (roGFP) probes, which allowed us to monitor rapid changes in ROS production in real time in different subcellular compartments during hypoxia. This methodology was used in combination with conditional knockout mice models, pharmacological approaches, and transcriptomic studies. We have proposed a mitochondria-to-membrane signaling model of acute O2 sensing in which H2O2 released in the mitochondrial intermembrane space serves as a signaling molecule to inhibit K+ channels on the plasma membrane. Critical Issues: Changes in mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) production during acute hypoxia are highly compartmentalized in the submitochondrial regions. The use of redox-sensitive probes targeted to specific compartments is essential to fully understand the role of mitochondrial ROS in acute O2 sensing. Future Directions: Further studies are needed to specify the ROS and to characterize the target(s) of ROS in chemoreceptor cells during acute hypoxia. BACKGROUND: the main aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between sole pattern parameters of football boots with the frequency of injuries that occur in semiprofessional and amateur footballers. METHODS: The study sample was composed of 77 male football players. All were at least 18 years old, played at least 10 h per week, gave signed informed consent to take part and properly completed the Visual Analogue Scale. This study analysed data from each player's medical history, including age, injuries, years of practice, field type and surface condition information. RESULTS: The visual analogic score in semiprofessional players was higher (2.05 ± 2.43) than in amateur players (1.00 ± 1.1). A total of 141 lesions were collected, equivalent to 1.81 injuries for each football player studied (n = 77). The result of the ROC curve indicated that the player's years of practice could predict significantly (p < 0.05) the presence of lower limb injuries, with an area under the curve of 0.714. CONCLUSIONS: This study described the predictive capacity of sole pattern characteristics concerning lower limb injuries in amateur and semiprofessional footballers. Football boot variables associated with the number of studs were associated with foot and ankle overload injuries.

Abstract: Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease affecting 300 million people worldwide. It results in several structural changes in the airways, which are minimally accessible in clinical practice. Cell therapy using mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) is a promising strategy for treating asthma due to the paracrine activity of MSCs, which influences tissue regeneration and modulates the immune response. Studies using extracellular vesicles (EV) released by MSCs have demonstrated their regenerative properties in animal models. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of EVs isolated from human bone marrow MSCs (hBM-MSCs) to control lung tissue remodeling in ovalbumin-induced allergic asthma in Balb/c mice. We isolated hBM-MSCs from a single donor, expanded and characterized them, and then isolated EVs. Asthma was induced in 43 male Balb/c mice, divided into four groups: control, asthmatic (AS), asthmatic plus systemic EVs (EV-S), and asthmatic plus intratracheal EVs (EV-IT). Upon completion of asthma induction, animals were treated with EVs either locally (EV-IT) or intravenously (EV-S). Seven days after, we performed bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and the total nuclear cells were counted. The animals were euthanized, and the lungs were collected for histopathological analysis of the airways. The EV-S group showed improvement in only the total BAL cell count compared with the AS group, while the EV-IT group showed significant improvement in almost all evaluated criteria. Therefore, we demonstrate that the local application of EVs derived from hBM-MSCs may be a potential treatment in controlling asthma.

A single antibody (anti-TRBC1; JOVI-1 antibody clone) against one of the two mutually exclusive T-cell receptor ß-chain constant domains was identified as a potentially useful flow-cytometry (FCM) marker to assess Tαß-cell clonality. We optimized the TRBC1-FCM approach for detecting clonal Tαß-cells and validated the method in 211 normal, reactive and pathological samples. TRBC1 labeling significantly improved in the presence of CD3. Purified TRBC1+ and TRBC1- monoclonal and polyclonal Tαß-cells rearranged TRBJ1 in 44/47 (94%) and TRBJ1+TRBJ2 in 48 of 48 (100%) populations, respectively, which confirmed the high specificity of this assay. Additionally, TRBC1+/TRBC1- ratios within different Tαß-cell subsets are provided as reference for polyclonal cells, among which a bimodal pattern of TRBC1-expression profile was found for all TCRVß families, whereas highly-variable TRBC1+/TRBC1- ratios were observed in more mature vs. naïve Tαß-cell subsets (vs. total T-cells). In 112/117 (96%) samples containing clonal Tαß-cells in which the approach was validated, monotypic expression of TRBC1 was confirmed. Dilutional experiments showed a level of detection for detecting clonal Tαß-cells of ≤10-4 in seven out of eight pathological samples. These results support implementation of the optimized TRBC1-FCM approach as a fast, specific and accurate method for assessing T-cell clonality in diagnostic-FCM panels, and for minimal (residual) disease detection in mature Tαß+ leukemia/lymphoma patients.

The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to analyse the relationship of neuromuscular performance and spatiotemporal parameters in 18 adolescent distance athletes (age, 15.5 ± 1.1 years). Using the OptoGait system, the power, rhythm, reactive strength index, jump flying time, and jump height of the squat jump, countermovement jump, and eight maximal hoppings test (HT8max) and the contact time (CT), flying time (FT), step frequency, stride angle, and step length of running at different speeds were measured. Maturity offset was determined based on anthropometric variables. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) of repeated measurements showed a reduction in CT (p < 0.000) and an increase in step frequency, step length, and stride angle (p < 0.001), as the velocity increased. The HT8max test showed significant correlations with very large effect sizes between neuromuscular performance variables (reactive strength index, power, jump flying time, jump height, and rhythm) and both step frequency and step length. Multiple linear regression found this relationship after adjusting spatiotemporal parameters with neuromuscular performance variables. Some variables of neuromuscular performance, mainly in reactive tests, were the predictors of spatiotemporal parameters (CT, FT, stride angle, and VO). Rhythm and jump flying time in the HT8max test and power in the countermovement jump test are parameters that can predict variables associated with running biomechanics, such as VO, CT, FT, and stride angle.

Anaerobic power and capacity are considered determinants of performance and are usually assessed in athletes as a part of their physical capacities' evaluation along the season. For that purpose, many field tests have been created. The main objective of this study was to analyze the agreement between four field tests and a laboratory test. Nineteen CrossFit® (CF) athletes were recruited for this study (28.63 ± 6.62 years) who had been practicing CF for at least one year. Tests performed were: (1) Anaerobic Squat Test at 60% of bodyweight (AST60); (2) Anaerobic Squat Test at 70% of bodyweight (AST70); (3) Repeated Jump Test (RJT); (4) Assault Bike Test (ABT); and (5) Wingate Anaerobic Test on a cycle ergometer (WG). All tests consisted of 30 s of max effort. The differences among methods were tested using a repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) and effect size. Agreement between methods was performed using Bland-Altman analysis. Analysis of agreement showed systematic bias in all field test PP values, which varied between -110.05 (AST60PP-WGPP) and 463.58 (ABTPP-WGPP), and a significant proportional error in ABTPP by rank correlation (p < 0.001). Repeated-measures ANOVA showed significant differences among PP values (F(1.76,31.59) = 130.61, p =< 0.001). In conclusion, since to our knowledge, this is the first study to analyze the agreement between various methods to estimate anaerobic power in CF athletes. Apart from ABT, all tests showed good agreement and can be used interchangeably in CF athletes. Our results suggest that AST and RJT are good alternatives for measuring the anaerobic power in CF athletes when access to a laboratory is not possible.

RESUMEN

In this study, we report the synthesis of gold-coated iron oxide nanoparticles capped with polyvinylpyrrolidone (Fe@Au NPs). The as-synthesized nanoparticles (NPs) exhibited good stability in aqueous media and excellent features as contrast agents (CA) for both magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and X-ray computed tomography (CT). Additionally, due to the presence of the local surface plasmon resonances of gold, the NPs showed exploitable "light-to-heat" conversion ability in the near-infrared (NIR) region, a key attribute for effective photothermal therapies (PTT). In vitro experiments revealed biocompatibility as well as excellent efficiency in killing glioblastoma cells via PTT. The in vivo nontoxicity of the NPs was demonstrated using zebrafish embryos as an intermediate step between cells and rodent models. To warrant that an effective therapeutic dose was achieved inside the tumor, both intratumoral and intravenous routes were screened in rodent models by MRI and CT. The pharmacokinetics and biodistribution confirmed the multimodal imaging CA capabilities of the Fe@AuNPs and revealed constraints of the intravenous route for tumor targeting, dictating intratumoral administration for therapeutic applications. Finally, Fe@Au NPs were successfully used for an in vivo proof of concept of imaging-guided focused PTT against glioblastoma multiforme in a mouse model.

Carotid body glomus cells are multimodal arterial chemoreceptors able to sense and integrate changes in several physical and chemical parameters in the blood. These cells are also essential for O2 homeostasis. Glomus cells are prototypical peripheral O2 sensors necessary to detect hypoxemia and to elicit rapid compensatory responses (hyperventilation and sympathetic activation). The mechanisms underlying acute O2 sensing by glomus cells have been elusive. Using a combination of mouse genetics and single-cell optical and electrophysiological techniques, it has recently been shown that activation of glomus cells by hypoxia relies on the generation of mitochondrial signals (NADH and reactive oxygen species), which modulate membrane ion channels to induce depolarization, Ca2+ influx, and transmitter release. The special sensitivity of glomus cell mitochondria to changes in O2 tension is due to Hif2α-dependent expression of several atypical mitochondrial subunits, which are responsible for an accelerated oxidative metabolism and the strict dependence of mitochondrial complex IV activity on O2 availability. A mitochondrial-to-membrane signaling model of acute O2 sensing has been proposed, which explains existing data and provides a solid foundation for future experimental tests. This model has also unraveled new molecular targets for pharmacological modulation of carotid body activity potentially relevant in the treatment of highly prevalent medical conditions.

Las mujeres con trasplante renal (TR) suelen cursar un embarazo de alto riesgo, pues son más susceptibles a presentar complicaciones médicas. Aunado a este hecho pueden presentar alteraciones en su estado emocional y psicológico durante y después del embarazo, lo que impactaría directamente en el estilo de crianza y desarrollo posterior del niño. Se desconoce cómo son los estilos de crianza en los hijos de las mujeres con TR y el posible impacto en su funcionamiento cognoscitivo. El presente trabajo tuvo dos objetivos: 1) determinar si existían diferencias en los estilos de crianza y las funciones cognoscitivas de los hijos de mujeres con trasplante renal en comparación con los hijos de mujeres sanas y 2) identificar la asociación entre las variables asociadas al riesgo en el embarazo y los estilos de crianza con las funciones cognoscitivas. Para ello fueron reclutados de diversos centros de trasplantes 23 niños (9 casos y 14 controles) de 7-15 años con sus respectivas madres a quienes se evaluó mediante el WISC-IV y el cuestionario CRPBI. Las madres fueron evaluadas con el cuestionario BRIEF, el cuestionario PCRI-M y el BDI-II. Se realizó un diseño transversal con alcance correlacional. No se encontraron diferencias entre el grupo caso y control en los estilos de crianza ni en las funciones cognoscitivas. Sin embargo, sí se encontró asociación entre los estilos de crianza y las funciones cognoscitivas. Un estilo en el que predomine la comunicación y la disciplina se asocia con mejores resultados cognoscitivos y conductuales.


Pregnancy in Kidney Transplant (KT) recipients is usually considered of high risk. KT recipients are susceptible to have obstetric complications. Studies report that KT recipients are at higher risk of experiencing distress during and after pregnancy, situation that may have an impact in parenting styles and child's development. Characteristics of parenting styles in KT recipients' offspring and its possible impact in cognitive functions remain unknown. The aims of the study were: 1) to determine if there are differences in parenting styles and cognitive functions among KT recipients' offspring and healthy women's offspring, and 2) to identify associations between high risk pregnancy variables, parenting styles and cognitive functions. Twenty-three children (9 cases and 14 controls) aged 8-15 years and their mothers were assessed with the (WISC-V) and the CRPBI. Mothers were asked to complete BRIEF, PCRI-M, BDI-II and a socioeconomic status instrument. A transversal correlational design was performed. No differences were found between case and control group in parenting styles or cognitive functions. However, an association between parenting styles and cognitive functions was found. Being raised with communication and discipline is associated with increased cognitive results.

The objective was to evaluate the effect of human adipose-derived stem cell (hADSC) infusion on impaired hindlimb function and urinary continence after spinal cord contusion in rats. hADSCs were transplanted into the injured spinal cords of rats 7 and 14 days after injury in two groups (B and C). Group C also received methylprednisolone sodium succinate (MPSS) after 3 h of injury. The control group (group A) did not receive corticoids or stem cells. Voiding and motor performance evaluations were performed daily for 90 days post-transplantation. Cells were labeled with PKH26 or PKH67 for in vitro monitoring. For in vivo screening, the cells were evaluated for bioluminescence. The levels of some cytokines were quantified in different times. Euthanasia was performed 90 days post-transplant. ß-tubulin III expression was evaluated in the spinal cord of the animals from all groups. As a result, we observed a recovery of 66.6 % and 61.9 % in urinary continence of animals from groups B and C, respectively. Partial recovery of motor was observed in 23.8 % and 19 % of the animals from groups B and C, respectively. Cells remained viable at the site up to 90 days after transplantation. No significant difference was observed in levels of cytokines and thickness of urinary bladders between groups. A smaller percentage of tissue injury and higher concentrations of neuropils were observed in the spinal cords of the animals from groups B and C than control group. Thus, hADSCs transplantation with or without MPSS, contributed to the improvement in voiding and motor performance of Wistar rats submitted to compressive spinal cord injury.

La enfermedad de Kawasaki (EK) es una vasculitis aguda de vaso mediano que afecta principalmente a niños menores de 5 años, que de no ser tratada, se asocia al desarrollo de aneurismas de las arterias coronarias en aproximadamente el 25% de los casos. Típicamente la EK se presenta con fiebre, cambios mucocutáneos y linfadenopatía. Sin embargo, EK es una enfermedad excepcional en la que las formas incompletas de la enfermedad son muy comunes y a menudo asociación sintomatologías atípicas. Éstas pueden crear un desafío diagnóstico para los tratantes y retrasar el inicio de la terapia. No existe un gold standard para el diagnóstico de EK pero hay estudios de laboratorio y hallazgos ecocardiográficos que permiten apoyar el diagnóstico en casos incompletos. El estudio con ecocardiograma debe realizarse lo más pronto posible cuando se sospecha el diagnóstico, pero no debe retrasar el inicio de tratamiento. El objetivo de la terapia en EK es disminuir el riesgo de desarrollar aneurismas de las arterias coronarias y de esta forma, la morbimortalidad asociada a dicha condición. El propósito de esta revisión es conocer las características clínicas y las posibles formas de presentación de esta patología, además del tratamiento actual.


Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute vasculitis of the medium vessel that mainly affects children under 5 years old, which if it's not treated, is associated with the development of coronary artery aneurysms in approximately 25% of all cases. Typically, KD presents with fever, mucocutaneous changes and lymphadenopathy. However, EK is an exceptional disease in which incomplete forms of the disease are very common and atypical presentations often occur. These presentations may create a diagnostic puzzle for pediatricians and may delay the start of therapy. There is no specific study for the diagnosis of KD but there are laboratory studies and findings in ECG that support the diagnosis in atypical cases. The echocardiogram study should be performed as soon as possible when the diagnosis is suspected, but should not delay the treatment. The goal of treatment in KD is to reduce the risk of developing aneurysms of the coronary arteries and thereby decrease the morbidity and mortality associated with this condition.
