BACKGROUND: The age of onset of hypertension (HTN) is decreasing, and obesity is a significant risk factor. The prevalence and racial disparities in pediatric HTN and the association between body composition and blood pressure are insufficiently studied. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of HTN in Chinese and American children and adolescents and to assess the relationship between various body composition indices and HTN. METHODS: Seven thousand, five hundred and seventy-three Chinese and 6239 American children and adolescents aged 8-18 years from the 2013-2015 China Child and Adolescent Cardiovascular Health study and the 2011-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys were analyzed. Blood pressure and body composition (fat and muscle) were measured by trained staff. The crude prevalence and age-standardized prevalence rate (ASPR) of primary HTN and its subtypes [isolated systolic hypertension (ISH) and isolated diastolic hypertension (IDH)] were calculated based on 2017 American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines. Multivariable-adjusted linear regression coefficients and odds ratios (ORs) were calculated to assess the associations of body composition indicators with HTN, ISH and IDH. RESULTS: The ASPR of HTN was 18.5% in China (CN) and 4.6% in the United States (US), whereas the obesity prevalence was 7.4% and 18.6%, and the population attributable risk of HTN caused by overweight and obesity was higher in the US than in CN. Increased fat mass, muscle mass and body fat percentage mass were associated with a higher risk of HTN in both countries. The percent of muscle body mass had a protective effect on HTN and ISH in both countries [HTN (CN: OR = 0.83, 95% CI = 0.78-0.88; US: OR = 0.72, 95% CI = 0.64-0.81); ISH (CN: OR = 0.87, 95% CI = 0.80-0.94; US: OR = 0.71, 95% CI = 0.62-0.81)], and the protective effect was more common among children and adolescents with high levels of physical activity. CONCLUSIONS: The burden of HTN in Chinese children and adolescents was substantial and much greater than that in the US, and the contribution of obesity to HTN was higher in the US than in CN. Augmenting the proportion of muscle mass in body composition has a protective effect against HTN in both populations. Optimizing body composition positively influences blood pressure in children and adolescents, particularly those with high-level physical activity. Video abstract (MP4 149982 KB).

RESUMEN

The efficient total synthesis of anti-tumor natural product pongaflavone (1) was described starting from commercially available 2,4-dihydroxyacetophenone (9) via seven steps and in 16% overall yield. Its two natural analogues pongachromene (2) and 7,8-(2",2"-dimethylpyrano)-5,3',4'-trihydroxy-3-methoxyflavone (3) were also synthesized following the similar procedure with the yields of 11% and 18%, respectively. Their preliminary anti-tumor activities were evaluated by the inhibition effect on A549 cells. The result showed that this kind of natural products exhibited different levels of anti-tumor activity. Among them, pongachromene (2) displayed the best anti-tumor activity.

RESUMEN

Kanjone (1), a bioactive furanoflavone and a potent biomolecule, was first isolated from Pongamia pinnata (L.). Herein, we have developed two approaches to synthesize kanjone as well as its natural analogues 6-methoxyisopongaglabol (2) and 6,3'-dimethoxy-[2″,3″:7,8]furanoflavone (3) starting from khellin and 3-hydroxy-4-methoxy-benzaldehyde, respectively.

RESUMEN

Phenethyl glycosides having phenolic or methoxy functions at benzene rings are substances widely occurring in nature. This kind of compounds has been shown to have anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activities. However, some of them are not naturally abundant, thus the synthesis of such molecules is desirable. In this paper, natural phenethyl glycosides 3 and 4 were first totally synthesized from easily available materials with overall yields of 50.5% and 40.1%, respectively. And a new synthetic route to obtain natural phenethyl glycoside 2 in 46.2% yield was also described.

Anemarchalconyn (1) and anemarcoumarin A (2), the natural bioactive compounds isolated from the rhizomes of Anemarrhena asphodeloides Bunge (Liliaceae), were first totally synthesized using easily available materials in short, convenient routes with overall yields of 32 and 48%.

RESUMEN

Efficient stereoselective total synthesis of (+)-muricatacin (1) and (+)-epi-muricatacin (8) was accomplished from commercially available chemical pent-4-ynoic acid via Shi's asymmetric epoxidation and Mitsunobu reaction as the key steps in 17.8% and 26.9% overall yields, respectively.

RESUMEN

The racemic 7-methyl-7-hydroxy-2,3-benzo[c]octa-1,6-olide, the analog of natural product (6R)-3,7-dimethyl-7-hydroxy-2-octen-1,6-olide, was totally synthesized using easily available (E)-2-(2-carboxyvinyl)benzoic acid as a raw material in nine-step reactions including three key steps of Wittig reaction, epoxidation, and cyclization, with an overall yield of 10.3%. The bioassay results showed that ( ± )-2 exhibited stronger antifungal activity than the natural product ( ± )-1 and (R)-1 against Alternaria solani with an EC50 value of 27.36 µg/ml.

3,7-Dimethyl-7-hydroxy-2-octen-1,6-olide and 3,7-dimethyl-2,6-octadien-1,6-olide, the natural bioactive compounds isolated from the fruit of Litsea cubeba and the liverwort Plagiochila rutilans, were totally synthesized using easily available cis-geraniol as raw material in short, convenient, and low-cost, five-step reactions including three steps of oxidation, cyclization, and dehydration, with an overall yield of 47.5% and 37.3%.

RESUMEN

The content of total flavone in carthmus tinctorius L in Xinjiang was determined by ultraviolet spectrophotometry with scan from 200 to 400 nm where the maximum absorption wavelength was 267.00 nm. The contents of ten trace elements and constant elements in carthmus tinctorius L including potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, iron, chromium, nickel, manganese, copper and zinc were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The results showed that there were comparatively rich trace elements and high total flavone, among which are comparatively high calcium, magnesium, chromium, copper and zinc in carthmus tinctorius L. It provided useful data for discussing the relationship between the content of total flavone and the trace elements in carthmus tinctorius L, and for studing the relationship between the trace elements in carthmus tinctorius L and the cure for cardio-cerebral vascular disease.

The contents of potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese, copper, zinc and chromium in 11 kinds of Chinese traditional medicines such as Danshen, Gouqizi, Dangshen, Jiaogulan, Dongchongxiacao, Huangqi, Rougui, Xixin, Longdancao, Shanzhuyu and Duzhong were determind by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry, in order to study the interrelation between metal elements and the therapeutic effect through the method of blurred classification. The results showed that the cluster in 7 kinds of medicines was similar when the relative coefficent was 0.50; cluster in 3 kinds of medicines was similar when the relative coefficent was 0.65; the cluster in 2 kinds of medicines was similar when the relative coefficent was 0.75. When the contents of metal elements are rich and the relative coefficient is considerably great, their therapeutic effect is similar. This suggests that trace elements have much to do with the therapeutic effect. The study provides new useful data for research on new types of medicines, and developing a new method for evaluating quality of Chinese traditional medicines.
