RESUMEN

Lacrimal gland tumours are rare. We present a case of a lacrimal gland pleomorphic adenoma in a 19-year-old man. The tumour was removed and he has made an uncomplicated recovery, with no sign of recurrence after nine months of follow-up. We will keep him under long-term review.

RESUMEN

The concept of functional foods containing specific physiologically active components originated in Japan as a means of improving the health of the nation and thus, reducing the drain on the economy caused by escalating health costs. Some aspects of the Japanese physiologically functional foods programme will be discussed. There is a growing interest in this area from food manufacturers both in Europe and the USA, and a few functional food products are appearing on the market. It is likely that there will be competition between the food industry and the pharmaceutical industry in the grey area of overlapping interest. The regulatory aspects concerning functional foods have yet to be satisfactorily resolved, both in Europe and the USA, but consumer pressure promises to accelerate the incorporation of the concept of functional foods into western food regulations. There are early indications that in Europe, consumer perception of the benefits of functional foods compared to normal foods will not be the same as in Japan, nor will the consumer be as receptive. Some consumer groups question the necessity of such foods from a health point of view and see the concept rather as a marketing tool. We are likely to see a number of foods for which anti-carcinogenic and other well defined properties are likely to be claimed. The active components will be present in the raw materials or produced or enhanced by the manufacturing process.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the use of thromboembolic prophylaxis in oral and maxillofacial surgery. DESIGN: Postal questionnaire. SETTING: Oral and maxillofacial surgery departments in the UK. SUBJECTS: Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons as listed in the BAOMS Handbook of Hospitals, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Factors used in the decision to use thromboembolic prophylaxis and the methods of prophylaxis used. RESULTS: The response rate was 73%. Previous thromboembolism (85% of respondents), prolonged immobilisation (79%) and length or magnitude of operation (78% and 74%) were the most commonly used risk factors, in the decision to use prophylaxis against DVT. Pre-operative trauma, cardiovascular disease and varicose veins were the risk factors most infrequently used. No forms of prophylaxis were used by 18% of respondents, with the remaining respondents using a variety of methods. The most widely used methods were graduated elastic compression stockings (74%) and low dose subcutaneous heparin (73%). CONCLUSION: The majority of known risk factors were taken into account when considering the use of prophylaxis against DVT. The methods of thromboembolic prophylaxis used in oral and maxillofacial surgery are considered to provide a satisfactory degree of protection, in moderate and low risk patient groups.

RESUMEN

The acellular slime mold Physarum polycephalum produces an extracellular sulfated and phosphorylated beta-D-galactan which was recently isolated from the nuclei of this organism. This polysaccharide has now been localized in the nuclei of P. polycephalum by electron microscopy using a specific "sandwich" technique: thin sections of P. polycephalum microplasmodia were incubated with the Ricinus communis lectin specific for D-galactose residues. The bound lectin was then localized with gold granules labeled with a galactose-terminated glycoprotein (desialylated ceruloplasmin). The galactan was found in the nuclei mainly associated with chromatin and, also, but to a smaller extent, in the cytoplasm and in some vacuoles. The specificity of the method was assessed by marking under the same condition the galactomannan present in the cell wall of the yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe.

RESUMEN

A sulfated and phosphorylated beta-D-galactan ([alpha]D+8degrees) was isolated from the nuclei of the acellular slime mould Physarum polycephalum. The polysaccharide was isolated from cesium chloride gradients during the preparation of ribosomal DNA and purified. The purified galactan contained 89% galactose, 2.5% phosphate and 9.6% sulfate groups and had an average degree of polymerisation of 560. Periodate degradation and permethylation studies indicated the presence of mainly (1 leads to 4)-, but also of (1 leads to 3)-, and (1 leads to 6)-linked galactose units with one branch every 13 units. These results suggested that the intranuclear galactan, apart from its higher sulfate content, is similar to the extracellular polysaccharide produced by P. polycephalum.

RESUMEN

1. The transfer from benzenesulphonate to benzoate as a growth substrate for Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain A resulted in a change in the enzymic route by which catechol was degraded; at intermediate stages it was possible to obtain cells containing the enzymes of both the ;ortho' and ;meta' metabolic pathways. 2. A similar result was effected by the reverse transfer, benzoate to benzenesulphonate. 3. Catechol itself always elicited a catechol 2,3-oxygenase in uninduced cells, but the product of this reaction, 2-hydroxymuconic semialdehyde, and biochemically related compounds such as 4-hydroxy-2-oxovalerate, unexpectedly induced a catechol 1,2-oxygenase. 4. Both types of catechol oxygenase are strongly repressed by the metabolic end products of both the ;ortho' and ;meta' pathways, but there was no inhibition of enzymic activity by these end products.

RESUMEN

1. Species of Pseudomonas capable of degrading arylsulphonates and detergents of the alkylbenzenesulphonate type were isolated from sewage and river water. 2. Benzenesulphinate, benzenesulphonate and toluene-p-sulphonate were rapidly degraded by these organisms with the release of the sulphonate group as sulphite; detergent homologues with a chain length up to 16 carbon atoms (4-n-hexadecyl-benzenesulphonate) also released sulphite. Sulphite oxidation to sulphate in the medium can occur non-enzymically. 3. Growth on benzenesulphonate and toluene-p-sulphonate elicited a catechol 2,3-oxygenase, which effected a ;meta' cleavage of the ring. The metabolic route for benzenesulphonate was determined as: benzenesulphonate-->catechol-->2-hydroxymuconic semialdehyde-->formate and 4-hydroxy-2-oxovalerate-->acetaldehyde and pyruvate; the enzymes catalysing these steps were all inducible. 4. Toluene-p-sulphonate was degraded via 2-hydroxy-5-methylmuconic semialdehyde to formate and 4-hydroxy-2-oxohexanoate and the latter was cleaved to propionaldehyde and pyruvate. Propionaldehyde and propionate were oxidized rapidly by toluene-p-sulphonate-grown cells but slowly by fumarate-grown organisms. 5. The specificity of the catechol 2,3-oxygenase induced by the arylsulphonates, towards catechol and the methylcatechols, varied during the purification and suggested that 3-methylcatechol was probably oxidized by a separate enzyme. Detergents of the alkylbenzenesulphonate type also induced a catechol 2,3-oxygenase in these bacteria. 6. A few isolates, after growth on benzenesulphonate, opened the ring of catechol by an ;ortho' route to form cis-cis-muconate. The enzymes to degrade this intermediate to beta-oxoadipate were also present in induced cells.
