RESUMEN

CONTEXT: In the renewable industry, pressure-dependent CsPbBr3 perovskite has a lot of potential due to its exceptional properties. Present work revealed the mechanical stability of CsPbBr3 between 0 to 50 GPa. The bandgap of unstressed CsPbBr3 is 2.90 eV, indicating a direct bandgap. Band gap values decrease by increasing external pressure. CsPbBr3 structure showed a direct band gap from 0 to 35 GPa and in-direct from 40 to 50 GPa. The unit cell volume and lattice constants are substantially decreased. Mechanical parameters, i.e., Young's modulus, bulk modulus, anisotropy factor, shear modulus, and poison's ratio are obtained. Under ambient conditions, the mechanical properties of CsPbBr3 showed ductile behavior and with induced pressure, their ductility has significantly improved. By applying stresses ranging from 0 to 50 GPa, the considerable fluctuation in values of dielectric function (imaginary and real), absorption, reflectivity, loss function, refractive index (imaginary and real), and conductivity (imaginary and real), was also identified. When pressure rises, the optical parameters increase and drag in the direction of high energies. Response functions are used to predict the density of states and the phonon lattice dispersion to study the phonon properties. By using the quasi-harmonic Debye model, the thermal effect on the free energy, entropy, enthalpy, and heat capacity were predicted and compared. These results would be useful for theoretical research and indicate how external pressure significantly affects the physical characteristics of CsPbBr3 perovskites, which may open up new possibilities for use in optoelectronic, photonic, and solar cell applications. METHODS: The structural, electrical, mechanical, optical, and thermal properties of cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr3) are investigated by applying external pressure from 0 to 50 GPa, using generalized gradient approximations (GGA) and Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) with CASTEP code built-in material studio by density functional theory (DFT).

RESUMEN

Tricuspid valve regurgitation, or TR, is a difficult-to-manage condition. In addition to EVOQUE, percutaneous annuloplasty, and surgical repair, the TriClip G4 system has been added to the interventional therapeutic choices for TR. Recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of the TriClip G4 device to treat patients with symptomatic, severe TR who have received optimal medication therapy but are at intermediate or higher risk of surgery. This review attempts to offer a thorough examination of the procedural features, learning curves, results of the device and compares the TriClip G4 system to other interventional therapies for TR. TriClip G4 has shown to have promising results in pivotal clinical trials, be cost-effective, and improve the quality of life of patients. Furthermore, it has its unique advantages against other conventional techniques and devices.

RESUMEN

The ongoing debate surrounding coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) with or without cardiopulmonary bypass persists, particularly in individuals with left ventricular dysfunction. The objective of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of these 2 strategies through a comprehensive meta-analysis of existing studies. A systematic search of PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Central Registry was conducted from inception to July 2023. The primary focus was on studies comparing on-pump versus off-pump CABG as the primary treatment for multivessel coronary artery disease in patients with left ventricular dysfunction (ejection fraction ≤40%), with mortality as the primary outcome. The meta-analysis included 26 studies with a total of 35,863 patients. The results revealed a significant reduction in mortality risk [risk ratio (RR), 0.75; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.60-0.93; P = 0.009] and other perioperative morbidities associated with off-pump CABG. These included stroke (RR, 0.67; 95% CI, 0.54-0.82; P = 0.0002), myocardial infarction (RR, 0.74; 95% CI, 0.56-0.97; P = 0.03), pulmonary complications (RR, 0.71; 95% CI, 0.55-0.92; P = 0.010), postoperative transfusion (RR, 0.70; 95% CI, 0.55-0.88; P = 0.002), neurological dysfunction (RR, 0.80; 95% CI, 0.64-1.00; P = 0.05), infection (RR, 0.74; 95% CI, 0.56-0.97; P = 0.03), renal failure (RR, 0.79; 95% CI, 0.67-0.95; P = 0.010), and reoperation for bleeding (RR, 0.66; 95% CI, 0.52-0.84; P = 0.0006). However, no significant difference was observed between the 2 groups regarding postoperative atrial fibrillation (RR, 0.97; 95% CI, 0.84-1.12; P = 0.69). In conclusion, off-pump CABG demonstrates a lower perioperative mortality risk and improved overall early outcomes compared with on-pump techniques in individuals with reduced left ventricular function.

RESUMEN

Autoimmune hypophysitis (AH) is an uncommon condition where there is inflammation of the pituitary gland which leads to hormonal imbalances. It is often associated with autoimmune diseases; however, a case is yet to be reported with an association of AH with seronegative rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We present a case of a 45-year-old female who complained of polyuria/polydipsia and rapid weight gain. An MRI of the head revealed enlargement of the pituitary gland, concerning for AH. Although she was initially treated for diabetes insipidus, she began reporting new complaints of joint pains and morning stiffness. She was clinically diagnosed with seronegative RA and improved with a trial of hydroxychloroquine. A repeat MRI showed improvement in the abnormal pituitary findings, and the patient was closely monitored with a multidisciplinary approach. Diagnosing and managing patients with AH are topics that are still being explored and researched as it is a relatively rare pathology. Consequently, we found the need to discuss the relationship of AH with seronegative RA and delve into the various diagnostic and treatment approaches.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To assess the comparative efficacy of dexamethasone (DXM) as monotherapy in comparison to surgery among the patients of chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH). METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, PUBMED, EMBASE, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases from inception till September 2023. Data was extracted, pooled and analyzed from all the studies that assessed the comparative efficacy of DXM as monotherapy in contrast with surgery as the primary treatment of CSDH. RESULTS: A total of 6 studies involving 704 patients were included in our meta-analysis. Comparison of surgery to DXM revealed there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups regarding mortality [RR=1.09; 95% CI; 0.52-2.28 P = 0.83]. However, a significantly higher incidence of secondary surgical intervention was observed in the DXM group [RR 4.24; 95% CI; 2.06-8.71 P < 0.0001]. No significant difference in performance was observed in terms of poor postoperative outcomes within hospital stay [RR 1.12, 95% CI, 0.40-3.19 P=0.83] and at 6 months [RR 0.92, 95%CI, 0.40-2.13 P=0.85]. CONCLUSION: DXM had a significantly higher incidence of secondary surgical intervention. However, there was no difference regarding mortality and other safety outcomes between surgery and DXM for the patients with CSDH. Observational studies showed that DXM was associated with a lower risk of poor postoperative outcomes within hospital stay and had shorter duration of hospital stay, but the recurrence rate was lower in the surgery group.

RESUMEN

Introduction: Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is a rare neurological disorder characterized by inflammation in the brain and spinal cord. This systematic review aims to investigate the potential association between ADEM and influenza vaccination by analyzing relevant case reports. ADEM is traditionally thought to be a monophasic condition, predominantly affecting children, often following viral illnesses or immunizations. Recent attention has focused on a possible link between ADEM and influenza vaccination, prompting the need for a thorough investigation. Methods: The systematic review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and the AMSTAR2 (A MeaSurement Tool to Assess systematic Reviews 2) guidelines. Electronic searches were conducted on PubMed, Cochrane Library, and clinicaltrials.gov databases, spanning up to August 2023. Inclusion criteria encompassed full-text articles in English, observational studies, case reports, and case series providing comprehensive details for confirming clinical diagnoses of ADEM following influenza vaccination. Data were extracted, including demographic information, vaccination details, clinical symptoms, diagnostic evaluations, treatment modalities, and outcomes. Quality assessment was performed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal tool. Results: A total of 23 cases of ADEM following influenza vaccination were identified from 19 included articles. The mean age of affected individuals was 40.2 years (±25.7) with 60.8% being male. Common presenting symptoms included muscle weakness (52.1%), urinary abnormalities (30.4%), altered consciousness (26%), and sensory disturbances (26%). Neurological examination revealed findings such as extensor plantar reflex (positive Babinski sign) in 26%, hyperreflexia in 30.4%, and generalized hyporeflexia in 13% of the cases. Diagnostic evaluations involved MRI, showing multiple hyperintense lesions in cerebral hemispheres (43.4%), subcortex (60.8%), and spinal cord (39.1%). Cerebrospinal fluid analysis indicated elevated white blood cell count in 69.5% of cases, with lymphocytic pleocytosis in 52.1%. Oligoclonal bands were reported positively in 8.6% of cases. Treatment approaches varied, with intravenous methylprednisolone being the most common (39.1%). Out of the 23 cases, two (8.6%) patients had a fatal outcome, while the rest showed clinical improvement with complete or partial resolution of symptoms. Persisting symptoms included numbness in the lower extremities (8.6%) and impaired ability to walk after 10 months (4.3%). Conclusion: While the association between ADEM and influenza vaccination is rare, healthcare professionals should remain vigilant and consider patients' vaccination history, particularly following an influenza immunization. This systematic review highlights the clinical manifestations, diagnostic tools, treatment approaches, and outcomes of ADEM cases post-influenza vaccination. Further research is essential to understand this association and improve clinical decision-making, ensuring the safety and efficacy of immunization programs.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Clinical pharmacy services are the specialized practices of pharmacists to provide pharmaceutical care. All these activities are documented as pharmacist interventions to avoid medication errors which occur during prescribing, dispensing, and administration. The purpose of this study is to conduct an economic analysis of the pharmacist interventions using integrated health system. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital. Pharmacist interventions were analyzed by an independent pharmacist. Cost-saving and cost avoidance analyses were carried out for drug-related interventions. Economic analysis was performed and tabulated both in PKR and USD. RESULTS: Out of 1330 interventions, 1250 (95%) interventions were accepted and changed the prescription upon the physician-pharmacist consultation while 71 (5%) were not accepted. Interventions related to prescribing and duplication errors were the highest of all (30 and 29% respectively). Pharmacist interventions were recorded with a 95% acceptance rate. Cost analysis showed that pharmacist interventions saved around 105,115.88 US dollars. CONCLUSION: Clinical pharmacy services provided by integrated health system are a cost saving program. The cost saved per intervention for our study is around USD 37 which is more than another similar study which quoted USD 30.35 per intervention.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To explore the association of the COL1A1 Sp1 polymorphism with decreased bone density and spinal changes in ß-thalassaemia patients. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional, comparative study. Place and Duration of the Study: University of Health Sciences, Lahore, from May 2020 to June 2021. METHODOLOGY: A total of 110 participants (55patients and 55 controls) of either gender, with ages ranging from 18-40 years were enrolled in the study. Bone density parameters including T-score, Z-score, bone-transmission time (BTT), and amplitude-dependent speed of sound (ADSOS) were assessed by ultrasound bone profiler. Lumbar spine radiographs were collected from patients and assessed for spine changes. Genotype analysis was done by HRM-PCR. Data were analysed using SPSS version 23. RESULTS: All bone density parameters were significantly lower in ß-thalassaemai patients (p<0.001). Spine degenerative changes were more obvious in patients with age <25 years (p=0.04). Loss of lumbar lordosis was seen in 74.5% of the patients. The frequency of mutant allele (ss) was 7.3% while heterozygous (Ss) frequency was found to be 33.6%. The polymorphism showed significant association with T-scores (p=0.03) and ADSOS (p=0.02) in patients. Radiographic grades were higher in osteopenic and osteoporotic patients (p=0.04). CONCLUSION: The association of polymorphism with decreased bone density in ß-thalassaemia patients revealed the potential role of genetics in bone changes and related disorders. KEY WORDS: Bone Density, COL1A1 Polymorphism, Osteoporosis, Thalassaemia.

RESUMEN

The aim of this meta-analysis is to assess the effect of different independent predictors on acute kidney injury (AKI) after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). This meta-analysis adhered to the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). A comprehensive database search was conducted using PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus for the period from January 1, 2015, to August 15, 2023. The following key terms were employed: "transcatheter aortic valve implantation" OR "transcatheter aortic valve replacement" AND "acute kidney injury" OR "acute renal failure." Our search was limited to studies published exclusively in the English language. The statistical analysis was conducted using RevMan version 5.4.1 (The Cochrane Collaboration). Estimates were presented as odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) for categorical variables, while continuous variables were reported as mean difference (MD) with 95% CI. A total of 19 studies met the selection criteria and were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled incidence of AKI was reported as 20% (95% CI: 18-20%). Factors significantly associated with post-TAVI AKI encompass hypertension, chronic kidney disease (CKD), low estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), high baseline creatinine levels, peripheral vascular disease (PVD), Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) score, European System for Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation (EUROscore) II, and the transfemoral surgical approach.

RESUMEN

In computational photography, high dynamic range (HDR) imaging refers to the family of techniques used to recover a wider range of intensity values compared to the limited range provided by standard sensors. Classical techniques consist of acquiring a scene-varying exposure to compensate for saturated and underexposed regions, followed by a non-linear compression of intensity values called tone mapping. Recently, there has been a growing interest in estimating HDR images from a single exposure. Some methods exploit data-driven models trained to estimate values outside the camera's visible intensity levels. Others make use of polarimetric cameras to reconstruct HDR information without exposure bracketing. In this paper, we present a novel HDR reconstruction method that employs a single PFA (polarimetric filter array) camera with an additional external polarizer to increase the scene's dynamic range across the acquired channels and to mimic different exposures. Our contribution consists of a pipeline that effectively combines standard HDR algorithms based on bracketing and data-driven solutions designed to work with polarimetric images. In this regard, we present a novel CNN (convolutional neural network) model that exploits the underlying mosaiced pattern of the PFA in combination with the external polarizer to estimate the original scene properties, and a second model designed to further improve the final tone mapping step. The combination of such techniques enables us to take advantage of the light attenuation given by the filters while producing an accurate reconstruction. We present an extensive experimental section in which we validate the proposed method on both synthetic and real-world datasets specifically acquired for the task. Quantitative and qualitative results show the effectiveness of the approach when compared to state-of-the-art methods. In particular, our technique exhibits a PSNR (peak signal-to-noise ratio) on the whole test set equal to 23 dB, which is 18% better with respect to the second-best alternative.

RESUMEN

Renal vein thrombosis (RVT) is a rare condition characterized by the formation of a blood clot in one or both of the renal veins. Bilateral involvement is more common, but when the condition affects only one side, it usually occurs on the left due to more extensive venous vasculature compared to the right side. RVT can be caused by various factors such as trauma, dehydration, malignancy, and a hypercoagulable state. Acute RVT is typically more severe than chronic, and it can cause symptoms such as renal infarction, acute kidney injury, renal failure, severe flank pain, and hematuria. Some cases of RVT have also been linked to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which is widely recognized to induce a hypercoagulable state. The standard treatment for RVT is warfarin but in this case report, we describe a COVID-19 patient with RVT whose thrombus was successfully treated with direct-acting oral anticoagulant (DOAC) apixaban for six months.

RESUMEN

Drawing on the self-control perspective, this study investigated the buffering effect of emotional suppression in reducing the harmful influence of workplace ostracism on employee performance. The research also studied the mediating role of employee silence and voice behaviors based on social exchange theory. We performed moderated mediation analysis on responses received from 159 employees working in the financial industry of the Southern Punjab region of Pakistan. The results showed that workplace ostracism harms employee performance via employee silence and voice behaviors. Furthermore, emotional suppression moderated the mediated relationship between workplace ostracism and employee performance. The results indicated that if ostracized employees adopt voice behavior, emotional suppression cannot aid them in performing better as compared to those who remain silent and regain their self-esteem. Our findings highlight the importance of emotional suppression capability in reducing the damaging outcomes of ostracism in organizational settings.

RESUMEN

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TTC) was initially reported in the 1990s as a reversible cause of cardiomyopathy induced by acute emotional stress. It is characterized by regional systolic dysfunction in the absence of coronary artery disease. We report a case of a 79-year-old woman who was admitted with acute respiratory failure due to pneumonia and was found to have a troponin elevation. Upon further evaluation, the patient was taken to the cardiac catheterization lab and underwent catheterization which showed apical ballooning concerning Takotsubo cardiomyopathy. She was placed on a norepinephrine drip but remained unstable. Milrinone-facilitated diuresis was then initiated with improvement and stabilization in hemodynamics. Takotsubo cardiomyopathy presenting with cardiogenic shock without left ventricular outflow tract obstruction requires treatment with inotropes. Although there is limited data to support the use of milrinone in cardiogenic shock due to TTC, its use in our case facilitated diuresis and improved the patient's outcome after norepinephrine failed to stabilize our patient's hemodynamics. Milrinone inhibits phosphodiesterase type 3 which increases the calcium influx thereby improving the myocardial contraction without any beta agonist action. Therefore, the use of milrinone which is a non-catecholamine inotrope could be considered a better alternative as compared to dobutamine given the underlying pathophysiology of TTC.

RESUMEN

During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was an urgent need for any medication to help reduce the high death rate experienced during this deadly surge. Remdesivir is an FDA-approved drug for COVID-19 treatment, given its anti-inflammatory properties. Upon extensive literature search, we found two studies and four cases of COVID-19-induced pneumonia treated with remdesivir who were developing bradycardia. In most of these cases, the bradycardia resolved within one-to-two days of holding remdesivir, which correlated with the half-life of remdesivir. Remdesivir was shown to have benefits in COVID-19-induced pneumonia during the COVID-19 surge; however, its use has been controversial. According to the studies, the sinus bradycardia following remdesivir administration does not impact patients' prognosis in terms of ICU admission and in-hospital mortality. There are multiple case reports noted to report several remdesivir-induced cardiac side effects. In our case, prolonged use and high dosages may induce cardiotoxicity, manifesting as severe bradycardia. Several possible mechanisms for cardiac adverse effects with remdesivir need further investigation and research as COVID-19 remains an active global issue. We present a 53-year-old man hospitalized with COVID-19-induced pneumonia who experienced extreme sinus bradycardia that is likely attributable to remdesivir.

RESUMEN

Implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD) are used for the primary and secondary prevention of sudden cardiac death (SCD). Currently, two different modalities of ICDs are in use: transvenous (TV) and subcutaneous (S-ICD). The use of S-ICDs has been driven by several potential benefits of this technology: preservation of central venous vasculature, no risk of vascular or myocardial injury during implant, easier explanation, and lower risk of systemic infections. Inappropriate shocks are defined as shocks delivered for non-life-threatening arrhythmias or because of oversensing. Here, we present a case of a 58-year-old man who began experiencing inappropriate shocks three years after S-ICD placement. Careful analysis of the ICD showed T wave oversensing with no malfunction of the device. The shocks persisted even after reprogramming, leading to subsequent ICD removal and loop recorder implantation. The onset of shock episodes coincided with the improvement of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first published report of cardiac remodeling leading to uncorrectable T wave oversensing that subsequently required S-ICD explant. This represents a potentially important limitation of S-ICD technology, especially as S-ICD use rises and medical therapy for cardiomyopathy continues to improve.

RESUMEN

Background and objectives: In recent years, immune-checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) particularly atezolizumab is on the rise in treating advanced malignancies. With its increased clinical use, various electrolyte abnormalities have been reported in the literature. In this review, we have addressed the question of significant electrolyte abnormalities associated with atezolizumab. Materials and methods: Following PRISMA guidelines, we performed a thorough literature search in four databases including PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Clinicaltrials.gov. We included only randomized controlled trials from 2010 till March 2021. After a comprehensive screening of 1587 articles, we selected 14 articles for our review and tabulated the results. Following MeSH terms were used: "electrolyte abnormalities", "immune checkpoint inhibitors", "atezolizumab". Results: Non-small cell lung cancer (n = 1270) and metastatic urothelial carcinoma (n = 1164) were the most common malignancies among 3160 patients. The most common electrolyte abnormality was hypomagnesemia (4.7%). Hyponatremia, hypophosphatemia, hypercalcemia and hypokalemia were found in 2.3%, 0.63%, 0.25% and 0.06% patients respectively. For patients taking atezolizumab, hypomagnesemia was most frequently found in non-small cell lung carcinoma patients (9.4%), while urothelial metastatic carcinoma patients most commonly had hyponatremia (5.15%). Hypokalemia though insignificant was observed only in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (2.85%). Conclusion: Since the use of atezolizumab is on the rise for the treatment of various cancers, more studies need to be conducted to better understand its safety and toxicity profile.

RESUMEN

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common primary tumor of the liver that is highly invasive and can even invade the portal and hepatic veins in later stages. In this report, we present one such rare case of HCC invading the right atrium. A 69-year-old male patient recently diagnosed with HCC secondary to hepatitis C presented to the hospital after experiencing an episode of near syncope. On examination, he had a distended abdomen consistent with ascites with positive fluid shift, elevated jugular vein distention (JVD), and bilateral pitting lower extremity edema. He had an elevated alkaline phosphatase of 298 U/L (34-104) with a total bilirubin of 2.7mg/dL (0.3-1) and a D-dimer of 1.67ugFEU/mL (<0.5). On admission, CT scan of the chest and abdomen showed extensive invasion of the liver by neoplasm and a large 7 cm mass extending from the intrahepatic inferior vena cava to the right atrium. A transthoracic echocardiogram confirmed this, which also better visualized the cardiac anatomy. Due to the extent of the disease, the patient ultimately opted for palliative care. The prognosis for patients with HCC who have an invasion of the right atrium remains dismal, with a median survival of only five months. Surgical extraction of the thrombus with resection of the tumor, liver transplantation, and systemic chemotherapy are some of the treatment modalities employed in such patients; however, historically, the median survival has remained only a few months. With the advent of new techniques and a better understanding of the disease, this seems to be changing and a curative approach can now be considered.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Nephrotic syndrome is a clinical syndrome defined by massive proteinuria (greater than 40 mg/m2/hour) responsible for hypoalbuminemia (less than 30 g/L) resulting in oedema and hyperlipidaemia. Objective of the study was to compare the frequency of relapse rate with short and long duration steroid therapy in Nephrotic syndrome. It was a Quasiexperimental control group design, conducted at the Department of Paediatric Nephrology, The Children's Hospital and Institute of Child Health, Lahore. Duration of study: One year. METHODS: The data of 150 patients with steroid sensitive nephrotic syndrome was included with clinical presentation and diagnostic investigations. The children were randomly divided into long and short duration steroid treatment groups. Outcome was determined in terms of relapse rate after achieving remission with both treatment strategies. Independent sample t test was applied to compare the outcome in both groups with p≤0.05 considered as significant. Data was stratified for all the effect modifiers like age and gender and poststratification chi square test was applied to see the effect on the outcome, taking p≤0.05 as significant. RESULTS: The relapse rate of the disease was 0.8±0.72 per year in short-duration group and 1.28±0.61 per year in subjects receiving long-duration steroids, and difference between the two groups was found to be statistically significant (p<0.001). The relapse rate was less in the short duration therapy group as compared to the long duration therapy 62.7% (n=47) patients in group A had one or more relapses of the disease within one year of follow up in contrast to 94.7% (n=71) children in group B (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Patients receiving short duration steroid therapy showed a lower relapse rate as compared to those who were administered long term steroids.

Objective: To analyse the effects of pre-operative stretchings of shoulder muscles on post-operative shoulder function in patients undergoing mastectomy. METHODS: The comparative study was conducted from January to May 2019 at Allied Hospital, Madinah Teaching Hospital and the District Headquarter Hospital, Faisalabad, Pakistan, and comprised mastectomy patients. The subjects were randomised to treatment and control groups. The treatment group received static stretching with range of motion, while the control group received routine post-operative care. Data was collected using Numeric Pain Rating Scale, Universal goniometer and Groningen Activity Restriction Scale at post-op day 1 and day 3. Data was analysed using SPSS 20. RESULTS: Of the 30- patients, there were 15(50%) in each of the two groups. The overall mean age was 46±10.75 years. The treatment group showed significant difference (p<0.05) in pain, range of motion and Groningen Activity Restriction Scale scores for activities of daily living compared to the control group. The treatment group also showed better results in terms of shoulder flexion and abduction range of motion (p<0.05), but showed non-significant difference (p>0.05) in external rotation and Groningen Activity Restriction Scale scores. Conclusion: Pre-operative stretching of shoulder muscles proved to be safe and effective in reducing post-operative pain and functional restriction in patients undergoing mastectomy.
