RESUMEN

A critical consideration in the application of phytoremediation to remediate sludge soil contaminated with heavy metals is the potential for leaching risks that prevail prior to the efficient uptake of these metals by plants. The most cost-effective method is to use heavy metal stabilizers with selective adsorption. A novel amide-based COF material (COF-TH) has been synthesized as a heavy metal stabilizer for Pb. COF-TH exhibits significant selectivity for Pb in five-metal-mixed solutions, with a distribution coefficient KD as high as 3279 mL·g-1, which was more than 7.3 times that of other heavy metals. The maximum adsorption capacity of COF-TH for Pb was 189 mg·g-1. The adsorption fitted Langmuir model and intra-particle diffusion model, and satisfied pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The excellent selectivity and adsorption performance originate from the complexation between abundant amide groups and Pb ions. Pot experiments and leaching assays confirm that COF-TH decreased Pb leachate concentrations by 77.8 % without significantly decreasing total phytoextracted amounts of other heavy metals, due to the high selectivity of COF-TH to Pb. Additionally, its positive impact on plant growth and microbial diversity makes it a promising soil remediation agent. This investigation offers a novel approach to mitigate the leaching risk of a specific heavy metal Pb during sludge land application by integrating soil phytoremediation with stabilization techniques.

Using the N-back task, we investigated how memory load influences the neural activity of the Chinese character cognitive subprocess (recognition, updating, and maintenance) in Mainland Chinese speakers. Twenty-seven participants completed the Chinese character N-back paradigm while having their event-related potentials recorded. The study employed time and frequency domain analyses of EEG data. Results showed that accuracy decreased and response times increased with larger N values. For ERPs, N2pc and P300 amplitudes decreased and SW amplitude increased with larger N values. For time frequency analyses, the desynchronization of alpha oscillations decreased after stimulus onset, but the synchronization of alpha oscillations increased during the maintenance phase. The results suggest that greater memory load is related to a decrease in cognitive resources during updating and an increase in cognitive resources during information maintenance. The results of a behavioral-ERP data structural equation model analysis showed that the ERP indicators in the maintenance phase predicted behavioral performance.

Land use is an effective way to reduce carbon emission in the recycling process of municipal sludge compost; meanwhile, heavy metals (HMs) in the sludge can be phytoextracted by ornamental plants. As an eco-friendly soil amendment, citric acid (CA) has been reported to be of great potential aid to phytoremediation, and its effect on ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) extraction of HMs (Zn, Ni, Pb, Cu, and Cd) from municipal sewage sludge compost-amended (MSSC) soils has been investigated through pot experiments in the study. The growth of ryegrass was significantly promoted under 2 and 4 mmol kg-1 CA treatments. The concentrations of HMs in MSSC soil after 45-day planting were significantly reduced ([Formula: see text]), and they were further reduced except for Cu while CA treated. The acid-extractable fraction of HMs in the soil was increased significantly as CA treated, and further improvement could be found when CA dose increased, which was due to the decreased soil pH and the complexation of CA with metal ions. The phytoremediation factor (PRF) was proposed to assess the phytoremediation efficiency, which was obtained as a ratio of the product of the biomass and metal concentration of plant shoot between the CA-treated group and the control group. When the CA dose was 6 mmol kg-1, the average PRF of five heavy metals reached 2.29, and Cd was the highest (3.72), demonstrating that CA had great promotion on phytoremediation of heavy metals. This study made a contribution to the research of phytoremediation in sludge land use by demonstrating ryegrass as an ideal bioaccumulator for heavy metals, especially for Cd.

The development of phytoremediation by garden plants is an effective way to deal with the dilemma of municipal sewage sludge disposal. In this study, two ornamental plants were used as phytoremediation plants to rehabilitate heavy-metal-contaminated municipal sewage sludge in field experiments, and the role of exogenous phytohormone IAA was also tested. Ornamental plants Loropetalum chinense var. rubrum (L. rubrum) and Rhododendron pulchrum (R. pulchrum) adapted well to the artificial soil made of municipal sewage sludge, and the concentrations of Cu, Zn, Pb, and Ni were decreased by 7.29, 261, 20.2, and 11.9 mg kg−1, respectively, in the soil planted with L. rubrum, and 7.60, 308, 50.1, and 17.7 mg kg−1, respectively, in the soil planted with R. pulchrum, accounted for 11−37% of the total amounts and reached significant levels (p < 0.05), except Cd. The concentration of Pb in all parts of the two ornamental plants was increased, as well as most heavy metals in L. rubrum root. As a result, three months after transplant, the phyto-extraction amounts in L. rubrum were 397, 10.9, and 1330 µg for Ni, Cd, and Pb, respectively, increased by 233% to 279%. The phyto-extraction amount in R. pulchrum were 1510, 250, and 237 µg for Zn, Pb, and Cu, respectively, increased by 143% to 193%. These results indicated a potential to remediate heavy metals of the two ornamental plants, especially L. rubrum. The results of correlation analysis implied that the interaction of heavy metals in the plant itself played an important role in the uptake of heavy metals. This seemed to explain why applying IAA in the experiment had little effect on plant growth and phytoremediation of heavy metals. This study provided a green and feasible idea for the proper disposal of municipal sewage sludge.

The effects of fulvic acid (FA) on heavy metal bioaccumulation by algae have been extensively studied, but the quantitative description on its adsorption behavior is not elaborately illustrated. In the study, the two-step adsorption model is firstly proposed to describe the adsorption of Pb by algae in the presence of FA (R2 > 0.984), which is characterized with two-plateaus in the biosorption curves. The first plateau in the curve represents a monolayer adsorption process of free Pb2+; while the second reveals a multilayer adsorption process of Pb-FA binding to those adsorbed Pb by algae, and the bonding material was called as ternary complex of algae-Pb-(FA-Pb). The formation of the ternary complex caused a sharp increase of the amount of adsorbed Pb by algae which was measured by an atomic absorption spectrophotometry, and a decrease of the toxicity of Pb to algae verified with SEM and TEM images. The ternary phase diagram showed FA could participate in the formation of ternary complexes at very low concentration. The study is important for a comprehensive understanding of the metal-microalgae interaction and its biogeochemical cycle in surface waters.

Landscaping of sludge is a kind of recycling disposal, but the potential heavy metal risks limit its application. In this paper, the sludge soil was remediated by ryegrass, and the effect of ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) was studied through pot experiments. Italian ryegrass was planted in the sludge soil treated with six gradients concentrations of 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 mmol kg-1 of EDTA, and the planting conditions were kept the same. After 45 days of planting, compared with the control group (without EDTA treated), the application of 1-5 mmol kg-1 EDTA decreased ryegrass biomass by 2-43%, reduced soil pH value by 0.21-0.34 unit, and reduced 4.1-9.7% capacity of exchange cation, but increased 1.4-8.6% soil organic matter. After growing ryegrass, the contents of heavy metals decreased by 10% for Cu, 15% for Zn, 6% for Ni, 14% for Cd and 44% for Pb; and after spraying EDTA decreased again by 33% for Cu, 31% for Zn, 56% for Ni, 24% for Cd, and 68% for Pb. In ryegrass, the uptake heavy metals were enhanced, and bio-concentration factor of Cu, Zn, Ni, Cd, and Pb of EDTA treated groups were 1.9, 1.6, 4.1, 2.7, and 4.8 times of the control group, respectively. However, EDTA only significantly increased transfer factor values of Cu and Zn, and made bio-extraction factor value of Cu greater than 1. The remediation factor values were used to comprehensive assess accumulation capacity of heavy metals by ryegrass under EDTA treating, and they ordered in Zn > Cu > Ni > Cd > Pb, and the best dose was 2 mmol kg-1 EDTA. Prediction models for bio-concentration factor were established by using stepwise multiple linear regression, explaining 94.9-99.3% of the corresponding elements with soil organic matter, EDTA dosage, and/or pH value (p < 0.005). This paper provided effective heavy metals remediation data for municipal sludge landscape and the prediction models.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical effects of myopia in children treated with abdominal acupuncture. METHODS: Ninety children with myopia were randomly divided into an abdominal acupuncture group (45 cases with 90 ill eyes) and an auricular point group(45 cases with 90 ill eyes). In the abdominal acupuncture group, Zhongwan (CV 12), Shangqu(KI 17), Xiawan(CV 10), Tianshu(ST 25), Qihai(CV 6), Guanyuan(CV 4) were treated with tapping method. The needles were not retained and down to the lower in accordance with the order from Zhongwan (CV 12) to Guanyuan(CV 4) for 5 min,and the erubescence skin without blood was proper. In the auricular point group, vaccaria seeds were pasted at gan(CO12), shen(CO10),pi(CO13), wei(CO4), yan(LO5), pingjianqian(TG2i), pingjianhou(ATli) and zhen(AT3); one ear was chosen every time and the other ear the second time with pressing of patient's own for 5 min every day. The treatment was given twice a week and 10 treatments were considered as one course in the two groups. The changes of the visual levels in visual chart before treatment, 20 min after the first treatment, after 5 weeks' and 3 months' treatment were compared between the two groups,and the clinicall efficacy was compared between the two groups as well. RESULTS: (1) The visual levels in visual chart were improved in the abdominal acupuncture group and auricular point group, and the effects 20 min after the first treatment, after 5 weeks' and 3 months' treatment in the abdominal acupuncture group were superior to those in the auricular point group(4. 78±0. 16 vs 4. 69±0. 22, P<0. 01; 4. 85±0. 16 vs 4. 79±0. 21, P<0. 05; 4. 89±0. 13 vs 4. 71±0. 25, P<0. 01). (2)The effective rates 20 min after the first treatment, after 5 weeks' and 3 months' treatment in the abdominal acupuncture group were better than those in the auricular point group[31. 4% (27/86) vs 0% (0/82). 81.4%(70/86) vs 60. 0%(49/82); 88. 4%(76/86) vs 51. 2%(42/82), all P<0. 01]. CONCLUSION: Abdominal acupuncture for improving the visual levels of myopia in children is superior to auricular point sticking.
