RESUMEN

Attentional bias toward weight-related stimuli plays a crucial role in the development and maintenance of body image disturbances. However, the temporal dynamics of attentional biases responsible for the previously reported behavioral effects caused by the task-irrelevant but spatial-relevant weight-related stimuli presented in the peripheral visual field among females with high weight dissatisfaction (HWD) remain unclear. The present study combined the modified dot-probe task and event-related potentials to explore the temporal dynamics of spatial attentional biases toward weight-related words among females with HWD. The results showed significantly larger N2pc amplitudes were elicited by fat-related and thin-related words than neutral words only in the HWD group. Moreover, only fat-related words elicited a significant PD for the HWD group, and the PD amplitudes were larger in the HWD group than in the control group. These findings revealed that weight-related words initially captured spatial allocation among females with HWD, and then fat-related words were actively suppressed after the initial capturing.

RESUMEN

Multisensory integration and attention can interact in a way that attention to the visual constituent of a multisensory object results in an attentional spreading to its ignored auditory constituent, which can be either stimulus-driven or representation-driven depending on whether the object's visual constituent receives extra representation-based selective attention. Previous research using simple unrelated audiovisual combinations has shown that the stimulus-driven attentional spreading is contingent on audiovisual temporal simultaneity. However, little is known about whether this temporal constraint applies also to the representation-driven attentional spreading, and whether it holds for the stimulus-driven process elicited by real-life multisensory objects. The current event-related potential study investigated these questions by systematically manipulating the visual-to-auditory stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA: 0/100/300 ms) in an object-selective visual recognition task wherein the representation-driven and stimulus-driven spreading processes, measured as two distinct auditory negative difference (Nd) components, could be isolated independently. Our results showed that both the representation-driven and stimulus-driven Nds decreased as the SOA increased. Interestingly, the representation-driven Nd was completely absent, whereas the stimulus-driven Nd was still robust, when the auditory constituents were delayed by 300 ms. These findings not only indicate that the role of audiovisual simultaneity in the representation-driven attentional spreading has been underestimated, but also suggest that learned associations between the unisensory constituents of real-life objects render the stimulus-driven attentional spreading more tolerant of audiovisual asynchrony.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Unruptured intracranial aneurysm treatment aims to reduce the risk of aneurysm rupture and bleeding, relieves symptoms and improve the quality of life for patients. This study aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of Pipeline Embolization Device (PED, Covidien/Medtronic, Irvine, CA) treatment for intracranial aneurysms presenting with mass effect in real-world settings. METHODS: We selected patients from the PED in China Post-Market Multi-Center Registry Study with mass effect presentation. The study endpoints included postoperative mass effect deterioration and mass effect relief at follow-up (3-36 months). We conducted multivariate analysis to identify factors associated with mass effect relief. Subgroup analyses by aneurysm location, size and form were also performed. RESULTS: This study included 218 patients with a mean age of 54.3±11.8 years and a female predominance of 74.0% (162/218). The postoperative mass effect deterioration rate was 9.6% (21/218). During a median follow-up period of 8.4 months, the mass effect relief rate was 71.6% (156/218). Notably, immediate aneurysm occlusion following treatment was significantly associated with mass effect relief (OR 0.392, 95% CI, 0.170 to 0.907, p=0.029). Subgroup analysis demonstrated that adjunctive coiling contributed to mass effect relief in cavernous aneurysms, while dense embolism impeded symptom relief in aneurysms<10 mm and saccular aneurysms. CONCLUSIONS: Our data confirmed the efficacy of PED in relieving mass effect. The findings of this study provide support for endovascular treatment to alleviate mass effect in unruptured intracranial aneurysms. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT03831672.

RESUMEN

The saccadic chronostasis illusion refers to the duration overestimation of the first visual stimulation after saccadic eye movement, which is also known as "stopped clock illusion." The present study investigated whether saccadic chronostasis would be observed in the auditory modality and whether the saccade-induced time dilation in the visual modality would be reduced by a synchronously presented sound. In each trial, a unisensory visual stimulus, unisensory sound, or bimodal audio-visual stimulus with a duration of 200-800 ms (probe stimulus) was presented at the saccade target location and temporally around the offset of the saccade, followed by a unisensory visual or auditory standard stimulus for a fixed 500 ms. Participants were required to identify which of the two stimuli (probe or standard) presented in the target modality (visual or auditory) was perceived as longer. The results showed that no saccadic chronostasis was observed in the auditory modality, regardless of whether the sound was presented alone or synchronously accompanied by a visual stimulus. Interestingly, the magnitude of the saccadic chronostasis illusion was reduced by the synchronously presented sound. Moreover, the combined effect of the saccade and sound on visual time perception fits well with the standard scalar model, and the weight of the cross-modal effect was higher than that of saccadic visual time dilation. These results suggest that sound dominates vision in time processing during saccades and linearly modulates saccadic chronostasis, which follows the Scalar Expectancy Theory.

RESUMEN

Although many studies have investigated attentional biases toward weight-related information among individuals with weight dissatisfaction, the mechanisms underlying the processing of task-irrelevant and spatial-irrelevant weight-related information as distractors remain unclear. Participants were assigned to groups according to their levels of weight dissatisfaction to address this question. Participants with high weight dissatisfaction (HWD) were assigned to the experimental group; those with low weight dissatisfaction (LWD) were assigned to a control group. By recording event-related potentials during a visual search task along the median vertical line, fatness-related/thinness-related/neutral words and scrambled strokes were presented horizontally in pairs as task-irrelevant distractors. The results showed that intact words facilitated fast attentional orienting compared to scrambled strokes, as revealed by the significant N2pc for all types of intact words for both the HWD and LWD groups. More importantly, only fatness- and thinness-related words elicited the evident PD in the HWD group, and the PD amplitudes were larger in the HWD group compared to the LWD group. These findings suggest that weight-related distractors were actively suppressed after initial attentional orienting among females with HWD. This reveals the mechanisms of attentional biases toward weight-related information among females with HWD and contributes to the model of the cognitive-behavioral theory of body image disturbance. These results may help enhance prevention and interventions for reducing weight dissatisfaction.

RESUMEN

To analyze the effect of tirofiban on ischemic events in CYP2C19 loss-of-function (LOF) allele carriers during pipeline embolization device (PED) implantation. Demographic information, imaging data, ischemic complications, CYP2C19 genotyping, and platelet function test results were collected from patients with PED-treated intracranial aneurysms at three centers. Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze risk factors for ischemic events. Patients were grouped according to LOF alleles and antiplatelet drugs, the baseline information of LOF allele carriers and non-carriers were compared, and the efficacy of tirofiban was analyzed by comparing the incidence of ischemic events in each group. In total, 278 patients were included in the study, 24 of whom had an ischemic event. 157 (56.5%) patients carried the LOF allele and were more likely to develop resistance to clopidogrel (P < 0.001) and hypertension (P = 0.010). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that the independent risk factors for ischemic events were age of > 55 years (OR = 3.308, P = 0.028), LOF alleles (OR = 3.960, P = 0.036), and clopidogrel nonresponsiveness (OR = 3.301, P = 0.014). For LOF allele carriers, prophylactic use of tirofiban after PED implantation helped to reduce ischemic events (4.3% vs. 16.4%, P = 0.039). This study supports CYP2C19 genotyping before flow diversion because LOF alleles increase the risk of ischemic events. Prophylactic use of tirofiban may help reduce ischemic events in LOF allele carriers.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Intracranial vertebral artery dissecting aneurysm (IVADA) is a rare type of aneurysm with high morbidity and mortality. Recently, the application of pipeline embolization devices (PEDs) has been extended to IVADAs. Here, we aim to investigate the safety and effectiveness of PEDs for IVADAs. METHOD: We retrospectively reviewed the PLUS database to identify patients who had IVADAs and were treated with PEDs from 2014 to 2019 at 14 centers across China. Data including patient and aneurysm characteristics, procedure details, angiographic and clinical results, relationship with the ipsilateral posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA), and patency of the PICA following PED coverage were analyzed. RESULTS: In this study 52 consecutive patients with 52 IVADAs were included. The mean age was 52.33 years and 82.7% were male. With a median follow-up of 10.5 months, the complete occlusion rate was 93.8% (45/48) and no recurrence or in-stent stenosis was detected. The total postoperative complication rate and mortality were 11.5% and 1.9%, respectively. Complications occurred in 9.6% (5/52) of patients within 30 days after the operation, including ischemic stroke in 3 and hemorrhagic stroke in 2. Another patient suffered an ischemic stroke at follow-up, 78.8% (41/52) PICAs were covered by PEDs, 1 case (2.4%) had a functional disability due to PICA occlusion, while 39.0% (16/41) had reduced flow during follow-up but hardly caused any obvious neurological deficits. Patients with IVADA involving PICA had a trend towards more complications (66.7% vs. 51.1%; P = 1). CONCLUSION: Treating IVADAs with PEDs may be a safe and effective option, with favorable clinical and angiographic outcomes; however, complications associated with this treatment should not be ignored. RESUMEN

The attentional blink can be substantially reduced by delivering a task-irrelevant sound synchronously with the second target (T2) embedded in a rapid serial visual presentation stream, which is further modulated by the semantic congruency between the sound and T2. The present study extended the cross-modal boost during attentional blink and the modulation of audiovisual semantic congruency in the spatial domain by showing that a spatially uninformative, semantically congruent (but not incongruent) sound could even improve the discrimination of spatially unpredictable T2 during attentional blink. T2-locked event-related potential (ERP) data yielded that the early cross-modal P195 difference component (184-234 ms) over the occipital scalp contralateral to the T2 location was larger preceding accurate than inaccurate discriminations of semantically congruent, but not incongruent, audiovisual T2s. Interestingly, the N2pc component (194-244 ms) associated with visual-spatial attentional allocation was enlarged for incongruent audiovisual T2s relative to congruent audiovisual and unisensory visual T2s only when they were accurately discriminated. These ERP findings suggest that the spatially extended cross-modal boost during attentional blink involves an early cross-modal interaction strengthening the perceptual processing of T2, without any sound-induced enhancement of visual-spatial attentional allocation toward T2. In contrast, the absence of an accuracy decrease in response to semantically incongruent audiovisual T2s may originate from the semantic mismatch capturing extra visual-spatial attentional resources toward T2.

RESUMEN

Background: Several pharmacological pathways have revealed statin to have a positive role in patients with for intracranial aneurysms. However, prior studies regarding the association between statin use and patients' outcomes after pipeline embolization device (PED) treatment were not completely supportive. Objectives: To investigate whether statin medication following PED treatment would improve the outcomes of intracranial aneurysm patients in a real-world setting. Design: A retrospective multicenter cohort study. Methods: Patients were selected from the PLUS registry study conducted from November 2014 to October 2019 across 14 centers in China. The population was divided into two groups: those who received statin medication after the PED treatment and those who did not receive statin medication after PED treatment. Study outcomes included angiographic evaluation of aneurysm occlusion, parent arteries stenosis, ischemic and hemorrhage complications, all-cause mortality, neurologic mortality, and functional outcome. Results: 1087 patients with 1168 intracranial aneurysms were eligible; 232 patients were in the statin user group and the other 855 were in the non-statin user group. For the statin user group versus the non-statin user group, no significant difference was found for the primary outcomes of complete occlusion of aneurysm (82.4% versus 84.2%; p = 0.697). Of the secondary outcomes, none had a significant difference including stenosis of parent arteries ≥ 50% (1.4% versus 2.3%; p = 0.739), total subarachnoid hemorrhage (0.9% versus 2.5%; p = 0.215), all-cause mortality (0.0% versus 1.9%; p = 0.204), neurologic mortality (0.0% versus 1.6%; p = 0.280), excellent (95.5% versus 97.2%; p = 0.877), and favorable (98.9% versus 98.4%; p = 0.933) functional outcomes. The total ischemic complication rate (9.0% versus 7.1%; p = 0.401) was higher but not significant in the statin user group. The propensity score-matched cohort showed similar results. Results of binary multivariable logistic regression analysis and propensity score-matched analysis both showed that statin usage was not independently associated with an increased rate of complete occlusion or any other secondary outcomes. Subgroup analysis found the same result in patients who did not use statin before the procedure. Conclusion: Among patients with intracranial aneurysms, statin use after the PED treatment was not significantly associated with better angiographic and clinical outcomes. Well-designed studies are needed to further confirm this finding.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Intracranial aneurysms pose a significant health issue, affecting 3-5% of the adult population. The pipeline embolization device (PED) has emerged as a promising treatment for these lesions. This study aimed to investigate the impact of operator experience on complication and poor outcome rates, as well as the learning curve for PED. METHODS: A total of 217 patients were consecutively enroled from four eligible centres and divided into three groups based on the number of procedures performed: group 1 (first 10 procedures), group 2 (11-20 procedures), and group 3(>20 procedures). Major complications include operation-related ischaemic or haemorrhagic events and mass effect deterioration. Poor outcome was defined as a modified Rankin Scale score greater than 2 at discharge. Cumulative summation (CUSUM) analysis was generated to assess the learning curve according to major complications and poor outcome. RESULTS: The study found that major complications and poor outcomes occurred in 5.1% and 2.3% of cases, respectively. The rate of major complications decreased from 10.0% in group 1 to 2.9% in group 3 ( P =0.053), while the rate of poor outcomes decreased from 7.5% in group 1 to 0.7% in group 3 ( P =0.015). Multivariable regression analysis adjusted for covariates showed that operator experience was associated with a lower rate of poor outcomes ( P =0.034). CUSUM analysis demonstrated that the learning curve for avoiding major complications and poor outcomes required 27 (mean=13) and 40 (mean=20) cases, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that PED treatment requires a learning curve of 40 cases to achieve reproducibility regarding complications and functional results. Additionally, major complications and poor outcomes significantly decreases after the first 20 procedures. CUSUM analysis can serve as a useful tool for monitoring and assessing surgical performance.

RESUMEN

Although there is substantial evidence of visual attentional biases in processing weight-related information among individuals with weight dissatisfaction, few studies have examined auditory attentional biases in these individuals. The identification of attentional biases may provide an impetus for interventions to reduce distress, negative body image, and pathological eating patterns among weight-dissatisfied individuals. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the attentional biases, as well as the neural consequences, toward auditory weight-related information among weight-dissatisfied young females. In this experiment, young female participants were assigned to an experimental group with high weight dissatisfaction (HWD) and a control group with low weight dissatisfaction (LWD) according to the levels of weight dissatisfaction. Using a spatial cueing paradigm, auditory fatness-related, thinness-related, and neutral household words were presented laterally as cue stimuli, followed by visual stimuli presented at either the cued or uncued location. The results revealed that auditory fatness-related words elicited significantly larger N2ac amplitudes than auditory thinness-related and neutral words in the HWD group. However, for the LWD group, thinness-related words elicited a significantly larger N2ac than fatness-related and neutral words. These results suggest an orienting attentional bias toward auditory fatness-related body words among females with HWD and an orienting attentional bias toward auditory thinness-related words among females with LWD.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Direct revascularization remains an important tool in the treatment of patients with Moyamoya disease (MMD). The superficial temporal artery (STA) is the most commonly used donor vessel for direct bypass, and an STA graft has traditionally been considered a low-flow graft for flow augmentation. This study aimed to quantitatively evaluate the blood flow of the STA after direct revascularization. METHODS: All direct revascularization procedures performed between 2018 and 2021 by one experienced neurosurgeon were screened. Quantitative ultrasound was used to measure the flow data of the patient's bilateral parietal branch of the STA(STA-PB), the bilateral frontal branch of the STA(STA-FB), and the left radial artery. Data on the patients' basic information, Suzuki grade, Matsushima type, anastomosis type, and blood biochemical parameters were collected and analyzed using univariate and multivariate models. An MBC Scale scoring system was proposed to evaluate the recipient artery network of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) tree. The relationship between MBC Scale score and STA graft flow was statistically analyzed. RESULTS: In total, 81 patients (43 males and 38 females) successfully underwent STA-MCA bypass and were included in this study. The mean flow rates in the STA-PB graft on 1 day preoperatively, 1 day postoperatively, 7 days postoperatively, and >6 months postoperatively (long-term) were 10.81, 116.74, 118.44, and 56.20 mL/min respectively. Intraoperative graft patency was confirmed in all patients. Comparing the preoperative and all postoperative time points, the STA-PB flow rates were statistically significant (p < 0.001). The MCA-C score was significantly associated with postoperative flow rate on day 1 (p = 0.007). CONCLUSION: The STA is a useful donor artery for direct revascularization inpatients with MMD and can provide sufficient blood supply to the ischemic cerebral territory.

RESUMEN

Objective: Combined bypass is commonly used in adult Moyamoya disease (MMD) for revascularization purposes. The blood flow from the external carotid artery system supplied by the superficial temporal artery (STA), middle meningeal artery (MMA), and deep temporal artery (DTA) can restore the impaired hemodynamics of the ischemic brain. In this study we attempted to evaluate the hemodynamic changes of the STA graft and predict the angiogenesis outcomes in MMD patients after combined bypass surgery by using quantitative ultrasonography. Methods: We retrospectively studied Moyamoya patients who were treated by combined bypass between September 2017 and June 2021 in our hospital. We quantitatively measured the STA with ultrasound and recorded the blood flow, diameter, pulsatility index (PI) and resistance index (RI) to assess graft development preoperatively and at 1 day, 7 days, 3 months, and 6 months after surgery. All patients received both pre- and post- operative angiography evaluation. Patients were divided into either well- or poorly-angiogenesis groups according to the transdural collateral formation status on angiography at 6 months after surgery (W group or P group). Patients with matshushima grade A or B were divided into W group. Patients with matshushima grade C were divided into P group, indicating a poor angiogenesis development. Results: A total of 52 patients with 54 operated hemispheres were enrolled, including 25 men and 27 women with an average age of 39 ± 14.3 years. Compared to preoperative values, the average blood flow of an STA graft at day 1 postoperation increased from 16.06 ± 12.47 to 117.47± 73.77 (mL/min), diameter increased from 1.14 ± 0.33 to 1.81 ± 0.30 (mm), PI dropped from 1.77 ± 0.42 to 0.76 ± 0.37, and RI dropped from 1.77 ± 0.42 to 0.50 ± 0.12. According to the Matsushima grade at 6 months after surgery, 30 hemispheres qualified as W group and 24 hemispheres as P group. Statistically significant differences were found between the two groups in diameter (p = 0.010) as well as flow (p = 0.017) at 3 months post-surgery. Flow also remained significantly different at 6 months after surgery (p = 0.014). Based on GEE logistic regression evaluation, the patients with higher levels of flow post-operation were more likely to have poorly-compensated collateral. ROC analysis showed that increased flow of ≥69.5 ml/min (p = 0.003; AUC = 0.74) or a 604% (p = 0.012; AUC = 0.70) increase at 3 months post-surgery compared with the pre-operative value is the cut-off point which had the highest Youden's index for predicting P group. Furthermore, a diameter at 3 months post-surgery that is ≥0.75 mm (p = 0.008; AUC = 0.71) or 52% (p =0.021; AUC = 0.68) wider than pre-operation also indicates a high risk of poor indirect collateral formation. Conclusions: The hemodynamic of the STA graft changed significantly after combined bypass surgery. An increased flow of more than 69.5 ml/min at 3 months was a good predictive factor for poor neoangiogenesis in MMD patients treated with combined bypass surgery.

RESUMEN

Mitochondria are intracellular organelles involved in energy production, cell metabolism and cell signaling. They are essential not only in the process of ATP synthesis, lipid metabolism and nucleic acid metabolism, but also in tumor development and metastasis. Mutations in mtDNA are commonly found in cancer cells to promote the rewiring of bioenergetics and biosynthesis, various metabolites especially oncometabolites in mitochondria regulate tumor metabolism and progression. And mutation of enzymes in the TCA cycle leads to the unusual accumulation of certain metabolites and oncometabolites. Mitochondria have been demonstrated as the target for cancer treatment. Cancer cells rely on two main energy resources: oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) and glycolysis. By manipulating OXPHOS genes or adjusting the metabolites production in mitochondria, tumor growth can be restrained. For example, enhanced complex I activity increases NAD+/NADH to prevent metastasis and progression of cancers. In this review, we discussed mitochondrial function in cancer cell metabolism and specially explored the unique role of mitochondria in cancer stem cells and the tumor microenvironment. Targeting the OXPHOS pathway and mitochondria-related metabolism emerging as a potential therapeutic strategy for various cancers.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Pipeline embolization devices (PEDs) have been increasingly used for the treatment of posterior circulation aneurysms. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the safety and efficacy of PED in the treatment of small to medium unruptured vertebral artery intracranial aneurysms (VAIAs). METHODS: Data from 76 patients with 78 unruptured small and medium (≤12 mm) VAIAs were analyzed. Data for this study come from the PLUS study, which was conducted at 14 centers in China from 2014 to 2019. Univariate analyses were performed to evaluate predictors of the occlusion and complication. RESULTS: Seventy-eight aneurysms in 76 patients were treated with PED. The mean aneurysm size was 8.28 ± 2.13 mm, and all PEDs were successfully placed. The median follow-up was 7 months and available for 67 (85.9%) aneurysms. Complete occlusion was seen in 60 (89.6%) aneurysms, which 86.6% met the primary efficacy outcome. All patients received clinical follow-up, the combined major morbidity and mortality was 2.6%, and 98.7% of patients had a good prognosis. Ischemic stroke occurred in 10.5% of patients, and adjuvant coil and successful after adjustment were predictors of ischemic stroke in the early postoperative and follow-up, respectively. There was no significant difference in the occlusion rate of aneurysm involving posterior inferior cerebellar artery ( P = .78). In cases where posterior inferior cerebellar artery was covered by PED, there was no significant difference in ischemic stroke. CONCLUSION: In the treatment of unruptured ≤12 mm VAIAs, PED has a high surgical success rate, a high degree of occlusion, and low morbidity and mortality. PED may be a promising endovascular technique.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Intracranial fusiform aneurysms are less common than saccular aneurysms, but are associated with higher mortality and morbidity. We conducted this study to determine the safety and efficacy of the pipeline embolization device (PED) to treat intracranial fusiform aneurysms. METHODS: This was a multicenter, retrospective, and observational study. Data for this study came from the PLUS study conducted from 2014 to 2019 across 14 centers in China. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate predictors of the occlusion rate and complication. RESULTS: A total of 1171 consecutive patients with 1322 intracranial aneurysms participated in this study. Among the participants, 104 patients with 109 fusiform aneurysms were eligible for this analysis (mean age 49 years, 36.5% women, aneurysm mean size 14.7 mm, 55% in the posterior circulation, and 6% in the basilar artery). Mean follow-up time was 9.0 months (range 3-36 months). The last DSA angiographic follow-up was available for 85 patients, and 58 aneurysms (68.2%) were completely occluded. The overall complication rate and mortality were 17.3% and 2.8%, respectively. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that age (OR=1.007, p=0.037) and cerebral atherosclerosis (OR=1.441, p=0.002) were associated with incomplete occlusion of fusiform aneurysms after PED treatment. CONCLUSION: PEDs may be an effective treatment for intracranial fusiform aneurysms, with a favorable occlusion rate. However, because these treatments have a relatively high rate of complications, PED treatment for fusiform aneurysms should be carefully and strictly controlled. Our analysis showed that PEDs with adjunctive coiling did not significantly improve the occlusion rate of fusiform aneurysms.

RESUMEN

By recording event-related potentials (ERPs) during a dot-probe task, the present study examined the neural dynamics of attentional bias toward height-related words among height dissatisfied males. Sixty male participants screened by Negative Physical Self Scale-Stature Concerns subscale (NPS-S) were assigned into a high height dissatisfaction (HHD) group and a low height dissatisfaction (LHD) group. The results showed that tall-related versus neutral words elicited larger N2pc for both HHD and LHD groups, whereas short-related versus neutral words elicited larger N2pc only for the HHD group. Additionally, an evident Pd was elicited by tall-related words for the HHD group, but not for the LHD group. Taken together, these findings revealed attentional biases toward height-related information for HHD individuals on a neural level. Specifically, HHD individuals showed an enhanced spatial attention oriented toward both tall-related and short-related words, and then, the allocated attention to the tall-related words was terminated by an active suppression mechanism.

RESUMEN

Introduction: Recent studies have found that the sound-induced alleviation of visual attentional blink, a well-known phenomenon exemplifying the beneficial influence of multisensory integration on time-based attention, was larger when that sound was semantically congruent relative to incongruent with the second visual target (T2). Although such an audiovisual congruency effect has been attributed mainly to the semantic conflict carried by the incongruent sound restraining that sound from facilitating T2 processing, it is still unclear whether the integrated semantic information carried by the congruent sound benefits T2 processing. Methods: To dissociate the congruence-induced benefit and incongruence-induced reduction in the alleviation of visual attentional blink at the behavioral and neural levels, the present study combined behavioral measures and event-related potential (ERP) recordings in a visual attentional blink task wherein the T2-accompanying sound, when delivered, could be semantically neutral in addition to congruent or incongruent with respect to T2. Results: The behavioral data clearly showed that compared to the neutral sound, the congruent sound improved T2 discrimination during the blink to a higher degree while the incongruent sound improved it to a lesser degree. The T2-locked ERP data revealed that the early occipital cross-modal N195 component (192-228 ms after T2 onset) was uniquely larger in the congruent-sound condition than in the neutral-sound and incongruent-sound conditions, whereas the late parietal cross-modal N440 component (400-500 ms) was prominent only in the incongruent-sound condition. Discussion: These findings provide strong evidence that the modulating effect of audiovisual semantic congruency on the sound-induced alleviation of visual attentional blink contains not only a late incongruence-induced cost but also an early congruence-induced benefit, thereby demonstrating for the first time an unequivocal congruent-sound-induced benefit in alleviating the limitation of time-based visual attention.

RESUMEN

The treatment of complex cerebrovascular diseases (CCVDs) at the skull base, such as complex intracranial aneurysms, carotid-cavernous sinus fistulas, and intracranial artery traumatic injuries, is a difficult clinical problem despite advances in endovascular and surgical therapies. Covered stents or stent graft insertion is a new concept for endovascular treatment that focuses on arterial wall defect reconstruction, differing from endovascular lesion embolization or flow diverter therapies. In recent years, covered stents specifically designed for cerebrovascular treatment have been applied in the clinical setting, allowing thousands of patients with CCVDs to undergo intraluminal reconstruction treatment and achieving positive results, even in the era of flow diverters. Since there is no unified reference standard for the application of covered stents for treating CCVDs, it is necessary to further standardize and guide the clinical application of this technique. Thus, we organized authoritative experts in the field of neurointervention in China to write an expert consensus, which aims to summarize the results of covered stent insertion in the treatment of CCVDs and propose suitable standards for its application in the clinical setting. Based on the contents of this consensus, clinicians can use individualized intraluminal reconstruction treatment techniques for patients with CCVDs.

RESUMEN

It has been reported that attending to stimuli in visual modality can spread to task-irrelevant but synchronously presented stimuli in auditory modality, a phenomenon termed the cross-modal spread of attention, which could be either stimulus-driven or representation-driven depending on whether the visual constituent of an audiovisual object is further selected based on the object representation. The stimulus-driven spread of attention occurs whenever a task-irrelevant sound synchronizes with an attended visual stimulus, regardless of the cross-modal semantic congruency. The present study recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) to investigate whether the stimulus-driven cross-modal spread of attention could be modulated by audio-visual emotional congruency in a visual oddball task where emotion (positive/negative) was task-irrelevant. The results first demonstrated a prominent stimulus-driven spread of attention regardless of audio-visual emotional congruency by showing that for all audiovisual pairs, the extracted ERPs to the auditory constituents of audiovisual stimuli within the time window of 200-300 ms were significantly larger than ERPs to the same auditory stimuli delivered alone. However, the amplitude of this stimulus-driven auditory Nd component during 200-300 ms was significantly larger for emotionally incongruent than congruent audiovisual stimuli when their visual constituents' emotional valences were negative. Moreover, the Nd was sustained during 300-400 ms only for the incongruent audiovisual stimuli with emotionally negative visual constituents. These findings suggest that although the occurrence of the stimulus-driven cross-modal spread of attention is independent of audio-visual emotional congruency, its magnitude is nevertheless modulated even when emotion is task-irrelevant.
