RESUMEN

BACKGROUND This study aimed to evaluate the morphological characteristics of the anterior maxillary nasopalatine canal and the width of the buccal bone using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in 150 adults in Northern Cyprus. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study included 150 participants, and their anterior maxillary morphometric measurements (eg, length of the nasopalatine canal and anteroposterior diameter of the nasal foramen) were taken using CBCT with the scanning parameters of 90 kvP, 24 s, 4 mA, voxel size 0.3 mm, and field of view 10×6 cm. The shapes of the nasopalatine canal (NPC) were categorized into 4 types: cylindrical, hourglass, funnel-shaped, and banana (54%, 20.6%, 18.6%, and 4%, respectively). RESULTS The findings showed a clear link between the shape of the NPC and the horizontal dimensions of the anterior maxilla's morphometric properties. In general, decreased horizontal bone dimensions were found in the premaxilla at the banana- and funnel-shaped type for the nasopalatine canal. Also, the anteroposterior diameter of a nasal foramen in the hourglass shape was significantly larger in diameter than all other shapes. Additionally, the morphology of the nasopalatine canal is influenced by its shape. The sagittal cross-section has shown significant correlations with the sizes of the incisive foramen, nasal foramen, and the length of the nasopalatine canal. CONCLUSIONS The study found a correlation between the shape of the NPC and the horizontal dimensions of the anterior maxilla's anatomy. The measurements of NPC in a North Cyprus population slightly differ from the established standards found in the existing literature. Conducting more extensive studies with a larger number of CBCT images will offer additional insights.

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to evaluate the anatomical characteristics of patients with unilateral impacted canine teeth compared to a control group. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) records were retrospectively analyzed. MATERIAL AND METHODS CBCT records of 64 patients with unilateral impacted canine teeth (57.8% female and 42.2% male) and 64 controls (59.4% female and 40.6% male) were retrospectively analyzed. On the CBCT images, intermolar width, arch length, arch perimeter, palatal width in the molar region at cementoenamel junction, palatal width in the molar region at the crest, palatal width in the molar region measured from mid-root level, nasal cavity width, and palatal depth were evaluated. RESULTS In the palatal width measurement from the mid-root variable, the measurement of labially positioned canines was significantly lower than the control group (P<0.05). In terms of intermolar width, the labial positioned impacted canines' values were lower than in the control group. There was a significant difference in terms of the perimeter variable and both palatinally and labially positioned impacted canines were significantly lower than in the control group (P<0.05). All parameters were compared according to sex, and measurements of male patients were significantly higher than in female patients (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS A labially impacted canine was strongly linked to a decrease in mid-root palatal and intermolar widths. Additionally, impacted canines positioned both palatally and labially were found to result in a reduced arch perimeter. Moreover, male patients with impacted canines exhibited notably greater anatomical measurements compared to female patients.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate atherosclerosis as comorbidity by measuring the carotid (bulb and common carotid artery) Carotid intima-media thickness in COPD-diagnosed patients and to evaluate the relationship of atherosclerosis with the prevalence of COPD, hypoxemia and hypercapnia. METHODS: This study was conducted out between January 2019-December 2019 consisting of a total of 140 participants (70 COPD-diagnosed patients-70 healthy individuals). The COPD-diagnosed patients have been planned according to the selection and diagnosis criteria as per the GOLD 2019 guide. It is planned to evaluate as per prospective matching case-control study of the carotid thickness, radial gas analysis, spirometric and demographic characteristics of COPD diagnosed patients and healthy individuals. RESULTS: The average Carotid intima-media thickness in COPD patients was 0.8746±0.161 (p<0.05), and the thickness of the carotid bulb was 1.04±0.150 (p<0.05). In the control group, the average CCA intima-media thickness was 0.6650±0.139 (p<0.05), and the thickness of the carotid bulb was 0.8250±0.15(p<0.05) For the carotid thickness that has increased in COPD diagnosed patients a significant relationship is determined between hypoxemia (p<0.05) and hypercapnia(p<0.05). A significant relationship determined between CIMT and severity of COPD (p<0.05) The CIMT was high in COPD patients with hypoxemia and hypercapnia(p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Significant difference was determined between the severity (grades) of COPD (mild, moderate, severe, very severe) in carotid thickness. Also, CIMT was found to be high in patients who is in the early phases of the prevalence of COPD. In COPD-diagnosed patients, it was determined that severity of COPD, hypoxemia, hypercapnia and age were determining factors of atherosclerosis.

This study was aimed at quantifying artifacts from zygoma implants in cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images using different exposure parameters. Two cadaver heads, one with two zygoma implants on each side and the other for control, were scanned using 18 different exposure parameters. Quantitative analysis was performed to evaluate the hypodense and hyperdense artifact percentages calculated as the percentage of the area. Hyperdense artifacts and hypodense artifacts were detected, followed by the calculation of the hyperdense and hypodense artifact percentages in the image. In the qualitative analysis of the artifacts, the scores used were as follows: absence (0), moderate presence (1), or high presence (2) for hypodense halos, thin hypodense lines, and hyperdense lines. Artifact analysis was performed qualitatively and quantitatively using the post-hoc Tukey and Two-way ANOVA tests. As a result, in the qualitative analyses, zygoma implants showed a significant difference compared to the control group with regard to hyperdense and hypodense artifacts (p < 0.05). There was a significant difference between the means according to the FOV size arithmetic averages (p < 0.05). In terms of voxel size, the difference was found to be significant, where 400 microns showed the highest hypodense artifact while 200 microns showed the lowest hypodense artifact. In conclusion, hypodense and hyperdense artifacts were significantly higher in cadavers with zygoma implants than in controls. As FOV and voxel size increase, more hypodense artifacts are produced by zygoma implants so smaller FOV and voxel sizes should be used to prevent poor image quality of adjacent teeth.

Purpose: This study aimed to compare the presence and grades of intra- and extracranial carotid artery calcifications between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and non-OSA patients. Methods: CBCT records of 190 patients (95 OSA patients and 95 non-OSA patients) were retrospectively collected and analyzed. Patient demographic data, including age and gender for both study groups and body mass index (BMI), and apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) for OSA patients were recorded. The presence of intra- and extracranial carotid artery calcifications and the number of calcifications were noted according to the grading scale. Results: There was a significant difference in carotid artery calcifications between OSA patients and healthy individuals. A total of 56.8% of the OSA patients showed at least one carotid artery calcification, whereas 13.8% of healthy individuals showed at least one carotid artery calcification (p < 0.05). For intracranial calcifications, OSA patients showed a significantly higher prevalence than healthy individuals (p < 0.05). The results showed that as the apnea-hypopnea index increases in OSA patients, the incidence of carotid artery calcification increases simultaneously. AHI > 30 patients showed the highest percentage of calcifications. Conclusion: In conclusion, OSA patients showed a higher prevalence of calcified carotid artery calcifications than healthy individuals. The results can be interpreted as the higher AHI, the more carotid artery calcification occurs. As these lesions can be a precursor of future strokes, 3D MDCT/CBCT images should evaluate meticulously not only extracranial but also intracranially, especially in OSA patients.

OBJECTIVE: This web-based survey, as a tool of teledentistry, is aimed at assessing the level of knowledge, attitudes, and awareness regarding MRONJ among dental professionals in Northern Cyprus. METHODS: An online self-administered questionnaire about MRONJ was sent to all dentists in Northern Cyprus through Google Forms. The first part of the questionnaire consists of demographic and professional information, and the second part included questions about knowledge and awareness questions about MRONJ. The SPSS software was used for statistical data analysis. A Chi-square test was performed to compare between the groups. The significance level was set at p < 0.05. RESULTS: A total of 112 dentists participated in this survey. The participants showed an insufficient level of knowledge regarding MRONJ, as only 56.6% of the participants stated that they had general knowledge about MRONJ. Regarding the practical questions of the survey, the participants showed poor knowledge about implant and tooth extraction procedures while a patient is using antiresorptive or antiangiogenic drugs, particularly the usage of oral antiresorptive or antiangiogenic drugs for less than 3 years. Participants showed adequate knowledge in terms of usage area of medications and administration of them. CONCLUSION: Teledentistry can be used as a supportive tool for dentists in diagnosing MRONJ. Similar to previous studies, the knowledge and awareness of MRONJ of dentists in Northern Cyprus were found to be inadequate. There is a significant need to provide more professional information as part of undergraduate programs so that the next generation of dentists can practice more confidently.

PURPOSE: This study aims to evaluate the morphology of the genial tubercle (GT) and lingual foramen (LF) between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and non-OSA patients for considerations of mandibular advancement surgery. METHODS: Cone beam CT records of 198 patients were retrospectively collected and analyzed. Five variables were measured for genial tubercle; anterior mandible thickness (AMT), the distance from the lower incisors to the superior border of the genial tubercle, the distance from the inferior border of the genial tubercle to inferior border of the mandible, the height of GT, and genial tubercle width. Lingual foramen were classified according to the genial tubercle. The frequencies, distances of lingual foramen to alveolar crest, lower border of mandible (LVDL) and diameter of LF were also measured. RESULTS: Significant differences was found for genial tubercle width, anterior mandible thickness, and the distance of lower mandibular border to the midline lingual foramina between OSA and non-OSA patients (p < 0.05). AMT gets thicker and GT gets narrower in OSA patients (p < 0.05). A linear regression analysis on the apnea hypopnea index with measured anatomical variables showed the LVDL (R = - 0.355*), body mass index (R = 0.254), and age (R = 0.33) showed a statistically significant association (p < 0.05). None of the other variables reached formal significance. CONCLUSION: LVDL is linearly associated with sleep apnea severity. The variable dimensions and anatomy of genial tubercle as well as lingual foramen for OSA patients suggest the need of 3D preoperative radiological evaluation before genioglossus advancement surgery. Cone beam CT can be a powerful low radiation dose tool both for evaluating the anatomy of the upper airway and mandibular structures at the same time for OSA patients.
