RESUMEN
The notion of negative absolute temperature emerges naturally from Boltzmann's definition of "surface" microcanonical entropy in isolated systems with a bounded energy density. Recently, the well-posedness of such construct has been challenged, on account that only the Gibbs "volume" entropy-and the strictly positive temperature thereof-would give rise to a consistent thermodynamics. Here we present analytical and numerical evidence that Boltzmann microcanonical entropy provides a consistent thermometry for both signs of the temperature. In particular, we show that Boltzmann (negative) temperature allows the description of phase transitions occurring at high energy densities, at variance with Gibbs temperature. Our results apply to nonlinear lattice models standardly employed to describe the propagation of light in arrays of coupled wave guides and the dynamics of ultracold gases trapped in optical lattices. Optically induced photonic lattices, characterized by saturable nonlinearity, are particularly appealing because they offer the possibility of observing states and phase transitions at both signs of the temperature.
RESUMEN
We analyze thoroughly the mean-field dynamics of a linear chain of three coupled Bose-Einstein condensates, where both the tunneling and the central-well relative depth are adjustable parameters. Owing to its nonintegrability, entailing a complex dynamics with chaos occurrence, this system is a paradigm for longer arrays whose simplicity still allows a thorough analytical study. We identify the set of dynamics fixed points, along with the associated proper modes, and establish their stability character depending on the significant parameters. As an example of the remarkable operational value of our analysis, we point out some macroscopic effects that seem viable to experiments.

It is shown that the nonlinear wave equation partial differential(2)(t)straight phi- partial differential2xstraight phi-&mgr;(0) partial differential(x)( partial differential(x)straight phi)(3)=0, which is the continuum limit of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam beta model, has a positive Lyapunov exponent lambda(1), whose analytic energy dependence is given. The result (a first example for field equations) is achieved by evaluating the lattice-spacing dependence of lambda(1) for the FPU model within the framework of a Riemannian description of Hamiltonian chaos. We also discuss a difficulty of the statistical mechanical treatment of this classical field system, which is absent in the dynamical description.
RESUMEN
We report upon the numerical computation of the Euler characteristic chi (a topologic invariant) of the equipotential hypersurfaces Sigma(v) of the configuration space of the two-dimensional lattice varphi(4) model. The pattern chi(Sigma(v)) versus v (potential energy) reveals that a major topology change in the family Sigma(v)(vinR) is at the origin of the phase transition in the model considered. The direct evidence given here-of the relevance of topology for phase transitions-is obtained through a general method that can be applied to any other model.

Certain geometric properties of submanifolds of configuration space are numerically investigated for classical phi(4) models in one and two dimensions. Peculiar behaviors of the computed geometric quantities are found only in the two-dimensional case, when a phase transition is present. The observed phenomenology strongly supports, though in an indirect way, a recently proposed topological conjecture about a topology change of the configuration space submanifolds as counterpart to a phase transition.
