RESUMEN

In this study, it was aimed to investigate the changes in testicular tissue and cell count, testicular oxidative stress and some metabolic blood parameters of male broiler Japanese quails fed with high energy diet and milk thistle (Silybum marianum) seed. One hundred-twenty male 15-day-old Japanese quail chicks were divided into 4 equal groups with 30 each. The applications in each group were repeated 3 times with 10 animals each. Control group was fed with basal diet. Milk thistle seed group was fed with diet including 1% milk thistle seed. High energy diet group was fed with high energy diet including 10% corn syrup. High energy diet + milk thistle seed group was fed with high energy diet including 10% corn syrup along with 1% milk thistle seed. The feeding period in all groups was 35 days. When the quails reached 50 days old, a total of 48, 12 from each group (4 from each replication) were euthanized and blood samples and testes were collected. Compared with the control group, significant increases in body weight, serum cholesterol and glucose level, aspartate aminotransferase activity and testicular malondialdehyde level; however, significant decreases in serum testosterone level, testicular glutathione peroxidase activity, counts of round and elongated spermatid and sperm as well as histopathologically, significant decreases in seminiferous tubular diameter and seminiferous epithelium thickness, and marked disorganization in germinal cells were determined in quails fed with high energy diet. It was observed that almost all of the disturbances in testicular tissue, cell number, oxidant-antioxidant balance and metabolic blood parameters caused by feeding with high energy diet were significantly prevented by supplementation of milk thistle seed to the diet with high energy. On the other hand, alone milk thistle seed and high energy diet + milk thistle seed administrations decreased body weight in comparison to control and high energy diet groups. As a result, feeding with high energy diet causes disturbances in testes of male quails by affecting liver metabolic functions and testicular oxidant-antioxidant balance, but milk thistle seed addition to diet plays a protective role.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to investigate hepatoprotective effect of some algae species such as Spirulina platensis, Chlorella vulgaris, Laminaria japonica, Sargassum sp. on experimental acute hepatotoxicity model that induced with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) in rats. Algaes at a dose of 200 mg/kg and Silymarin at a dose of 25 mg/kg were orally administered for 7 days followed by CCl4 at a single dose (0.5 ml/kg), at the 8th day to cause experimental acute hepatotoxicity. Levels of biochemical (AST, ALT etc.), lipid peroxidation (MDA), antioxidant (GSH, CAT, GPx) parameters and histopathological examination were carried out to investigate the hepatoprotective effects of algae. In Sp group ALT and ALP levels were significantly decreased compared with CCl4 (p < .05). Histological liver structures of Sp group were similar to the control group. MDA, GPx and CAT levels of Sp and La groups were significantly different compared with CCl4 (p < .05). Based on these results, algae species able to minimise the toxic effects of CCl4 and especially S. platensis could be used in the purpose of protection against chemical-induced hepatotoxicity.

RESUMEN

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) on some reproductive characteristics, testicular and pancreatic oxidative status and pancreatic endocrine receptor densities of male offspring at post-pubertal stage. A total of 36 1-day-old Wistar Albino male offspring including 12 pups of nontreated mothers (control group), 14 pups of 40 mg/kg STZ-injected mothers (STZ-40 group) and 10 pups of 60 mg/kg STZ-injected mothers (STZ-60 group) were used. The offspring were euthanised on post-natal day 60, their blood, reproductive organs and pancreatic tissues were obtained and examined. When compared with the control group, there was a significant decrease in body and absolute reproductive organ weights, serum testosterone level, testicular and pancreatic catalase activities, pancreatic glutathione level, epididymal sperm concentration of both STZ-40 and STZ-60 groups as well as in testicular glutathione level of only STZ-60 group. Significant increases were determined in testicular and pancreatic malondialdehyde level and glutathione peroxidase activity in both groups and in fasting serum glucose of only STZ-60 group in comparison with the control group. Although some histopathological damages were observed in testes of both STZ-40 and STZ-60 groups, there were no detectable differences between the groups in density of insulin, glucagon and somatostatin receptors in pancreas. In conclusion, GDM has negative effects on reproductive efficiency and testicular-pancreatic tissue oxidant/antioxidant balance of male offspring at post-pubertal stage.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Chromosomal microarray analysis is the first-tier test for the evaluation of developmental disabilities and congenital anomalies. In this report, we present CMA results of 971 patient and 301 parent samples. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Among 971 patient samples, 133 (13.6%) had pathogenic variants. RESULTS: While analyzing, an "in-house" variant database was also used besides other databases. Owing to this, we have found chance to report the most frequent benign variants in Turkish population. CONCLUSION: With the additional data we acquired in this study, we also emphasized the high potential of CMA in revealing single gene disorders and novel gene-phenotype associations as well as copy number variations.

RESUMEN

Oxaliplatin is used to treat advanced colorectal cancer. Platinum-containing chemotherapeutic agents are known to be ototoxic. However, ototoxicity is rare with newer generation platinum-derived agents, such as oxaliplatin. This case report presents a rare case of sudden unilateral sensorineural hearing loss following intravenous (IV) infusion of oxaliplatin in a 64-year-old woman with advanced colon cancer. The hearing loss was severe and did not respond to treatment. To the best of our knowledge, this is the fifth reported case of oxaliplatin ototoxicity. Although oxaliplatin ototoxicity is rare, physicians must be aware of this important adverse effect, and an audiometric evaluation must be performed when necessary. Patients treated with oxaliplatin should be followed closely for early signs and symptoms of hearing loss, and if hearing loss is detected, treatment should be stopped immediately.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of etodolac hydrazone (EH), a new compound synthesised from etodolac, on spermatozoon quality, testicular lipid peroxidation, apoptosis and spermatozoon DNA integrity in rats. Group 1 (n = 8) received 1 ml dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) daily (Control); group 2 (n = 8) was treated with 5 mg kg(-1)  day(-1) EH, dissolved in 1 ml DMSO (EH-5); and group 3 (n = 8) was treated with 10 mg kg(-1)  day(-1) EH, dissolved in 1 ml DMSO (EH-10). All administrations were performed by gavage and maintained for 8 weeks. Both doses of EH administration caused significant decreases in absolute and relative weights of testis, whole epididymis, right cauda epididymis, and spermatozoon motility, spermatozoon count in comparison with the control group. Only 10 mg kg(-1)  day(-1) EH administration caused significant decreases in absolute and relative weights of seminal vesicles and serum testosterone level, and significant increases in testicular lipid peroxidation level, and numbers of TUNEL+ apoptotic germ cells and spermatozoa with damaged DNA along with some histopathological damages when compared to the control group. However, body and ventral prostate weight, and testicular antioxidant markers (glutathione, glutathione-peroxidase and catalase), were unaffected significantly by both doses of EH administration. In conclusion, two different doses of EH, in particular its high dose, damage to testicular spermatogenic cells and spermatozoon DNA and, it decreases spermatozoon motility, count and testosterone level in healthy rats.

RESUMEN

Feingold syndrome (FS) is an autosomal dominant hereditary disorder characterised by finger and toe abnormalities, microcephaly, facial dysmorphism, gastrointestinal atresias such primarily as oesophageal and/or duodenal atresia and mild to moderate mental retardation. Approximately 60% of cases have an affected parent. MYCN is the only gene in which mutations are known to cause FS. In this report, we present a case with Feingold Syndrome having a novel mutation in MYCN gene and discuss genetic counselling and prenatal diagnosis due to pregnancy of the patient's mother.

RESUMEN

In this study, it was aimed to investigate the likelihood of detrimental effects of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4 ) on male reproductive system through oxidative stress mechanism and also protective effects of cinnamon bark oil (CBO). For this purpose, 28 healthy male Wistar rats were divided into four groups, seven rats in each. Group 1 received only olive oil daily; group 2 was treated with 100 mg kg(-1) CBO daily; group 3 was treated with only 0.25 ml kg(-1) CCl4 weekly; and group 4 received weekly CCl4 + daily CBO. All administrations were made by intragastric catheter and maintained for 10 weeks. Body and reproductive organ weights, sperm characteristics, testicular oxidative stress markers and testicular apoptosis were examined. CCl4 administration caused significant decreases in body and reproductive organ weights, testicular catalase (CAT) activity, sperm motility and concentration, and significant increases in lipid peroxidation (LPO) level, abnormal sperm rate and apoptotic index along with some histopathological damages compared with the control group. However, significant improvements were observed in absolute weights of testis and epididymis, all sperm quality parameters, LPO level, apoptotic index and testicular histopathological structure following the administration of CCl4 together with CBO when compared to group given CCl4 only. The findings of this study clearly suggest that CBO has protective effect against damages in male reproductive organs and cells induced by CCl4 .

RESUMEN

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of quercetin on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4 )-induced sperm damages, testicular apoptosis and oxidative stress in male rats. Group 1 served as control, group 2 was treated with only quercetin, group 3 was treated with only CCl4 and group 4 received CCl4 + quercetin. All administrations were performed by gavage and maintained for 10 weeks. CCl4 administration caused significant decreases in absolute and relative reproductive organ weights, sperm motility, concentration and testicular glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and catalase (CAT) activities, and significant increases in lipid peroxidation (LPO) level, abnormal sperm rate and testicular apoptotic cell index, along with some histopathological damages when compared to the control group. However, administration of CCl4 together with quercetin provided statistically significant improvements in LPO level, abnormal sperm rate, the degree of histopathological lesions and testicular apoptotic cell index when compared to only CCl4 group. In addition, improvements observed in absolute and relative weights of reproductive organs, sperm motility and concentration, and testicular GSH-Px and CAT activities in group 4 were statistically insignificant when compared to only CCl4 group. In conclusion, quercetin has antiperoxidative effect, and its oral administration attenuates the CCl4 -induced some damages in male reproductive organs and cells by decreasing the LPO.

RESUMEN

Cinnamon and its contents have multifactorial properties such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antidiabetic. Male infertility is one of the major health problems in life. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of long-term cinnamon bark oil (CBO) ingestion on testicular antioxidant values, apoptotic germ cell and sperm quality of adult rats. Twelve male healthy Wistar rats were divided into two groups, each group containing six rats. While olive oil was given to control group, 100 mg kg(-1)  CBO was administered to the other group by gavage daily for 10 weeks. Body and reproductive organ weights, sperm characteristics, testicular lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzyme activities, and testicular apoptosis via terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labelling (TUNEL) method were examined. A significant decrease in malondialdehyde level and marked increases in reduced glutathione level, glutathione peroxidase and catalase activities were observed in rats treated with CBO compared with the control group. CBO consumption provided a significant increase in weights of testes and epididymides, epididymal sperm concentration, sperm motility and diameter of seminiferous tubules when compared with the control group. However, CBO consumption tended to decrease the abnormal sperm rate and apoptotic germ cell count, but it did not reach statistical significance. It is concluded that CBO has improvement effect on testicular oxidant-antioxidant balance and sperm quality, and its consumption may be useful for asthenozoospermic men.

RESUMEN

Isolated sphenoiditis (IS) is a relatively rare clinical entity which might present with serious complications. The clinical records of ten patients with IS were reviewed. The presenting symptoms, the findings, and the treatments given were noted. Eight patients were female and two were male, and their age varied between 9 and 65 years (mean 31 years). The main presenting symptom was headache in five patients, diplopia in four patients, and postnasal drainage in one patient. The duration of the symptoms ranged between 48 h and 1 year. The diagnosis was accomplished by history, nasal endoscopy and radiological examination (computed tomography and/or magnetic resonance imaging). Two patients had fungus ball. One patient was a scuba diver as a possible predisposing factor. All of the patients underwent medical treatment consisting of intravenous antibiotics or oral antibiotics, and endoscopic sinusotomy was performed in nine patients additionally. Complete resolution was obtained for all patients except one who had diplopia for one year. IS may present with headache and orbital symptoms. Timely diagnosis and treatment are substantial in order to avoid serious complications, and to obtain a complete recovery. Medical treatment does not avoid surgery in majority of cases. Surgery is indicated from the very beginning specifically for the cases starting with diplopia which might be suggestive of a progression of the infection. Currently the most frequently used approach is endoscopic transnasal sphenoidotomy. This technique seems to be effective and less traumatic compared to other approaches.

RESUMEN

A perfect surgical approach to nasal cavity and paranasal sinus tumors should provide a broad exposition preserving the important structures with no cosmetic defect. Midfacial degloving (MD) technique provides good exposure without incisions and scars in the face. Classic MD technique includes rhinoplasty incisions. However, combination of the facial plastic skills of the rhinoplasty techniques with an oncologic approach limits its popularity. We modified the classic technique, which is performed without classic rhinoplasty incisions. The surgical approaches to 55 patients with benign and malignant sinonasal neoplasms are reviewed, and the modification of MD technique performed without rhinoplasty incisions is described. The study includes 41 male and 13 female patients with both benign and malignant sinonasal neoplasms. The ages of the patients were between 9 and 78 years with a mean age of 41.15 years. Follow-up of the patients ranged from 2 to 96 months with a mean of 31.7 months. Most of the cases were angiofibroma and inverted papilloma. Modified MD approach was used for all patients, and in 6 cases, the technique was combined with subcranial approach. We successfully resected the tumors in all of the patients. The most frequently encountered complaint in the postoperative period was temporary nasal crusting and epistaxis. An important complication was the rupture of subpetrous part of the internal carotid artery in one patient and also a temporary facial palsy in another one. Palatal dysfunction, oroantral fistula, or vestibular stenosis, which are significant complications of MD, were not observed in any of our cases. In this modified technique, rhinoplasty incisions are not used; therefore, the duration of operation is shortened, the technique becomes easier, and the incisions of the rhinoplasty procedure, which could cause circular stenosis, are avoided.

RESUMEN

Masson lesion is characterized by a benign intravascular papillary hyperplasia and subsequent thrombosis. Clinically, this lesion can be misdiagnosed as mucocele, hemangioma, Kaposi sarcoma, angiosarcoma, pyogenic granuloma, and several other lesions. In this article, we report a case of intravascular papillary endothelial hyperplasia of the hypopharynx and larynx, which caused dysphagia in an 18-year-old female patient. The lesion was excised entirely via a lateral pharyngotomy approach. We discuss the clinical and histopathologic features, differential diagnosis, and treatment of this uncommon entity.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Tumour markers play an important role in the diagnosis of cancer and the early detection of recurrences during follow-up. This study aimed to assess the clinical value of measuring urinary N-acetyl-beta-d-glucosaminidase (U-NAG) levels in patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma. DESIGN: Prospective, controlled study. SETTING: Tertiary university hospital. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Our study included 21 patients with primary laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and 17 cases with recurrent laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma. U-NAG levels of patients with tumours at different stages were compared with a control group of 19 healthy individuals with no known cancer. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Patients' age, TNM stage, blood urea, glucose, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and U-NAG. RESULTS: A statistically significant difference was found between U-NAG levels of patients with a primary tumour (preoperative period) and the control group (one-way analysis of variance, p = .00; Dunnett's t-test, p = .00). In the postoperative period, the observed trend was that of a significant decrease among primary cases (paired t-test, p = .00). U-NAG levels of patients with a recurrent tumour and patients with a primary tumour (preoperative period) were not significantly different (Tukey honest significant difference test, p = .841). There was no statistically significant difference for blood urea (t = -1.95, p = .064), glucose (t = -1.84, p = .074), or ALT (t = -1.79, p = .080). No significant relationship was found between the TNM stage and preoperative U-NAG levels (p > .05). CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that U-NAG might be used in the diagnosis of laryngeal carcinoma and the early detection of recurrences during follow-up. Further investigations are warranted to clarify the prognostic significance of U-NAG levels.

RESUMEN

Intratracheal ectopic thyroid tissue is a rare abnormality that can cause airway obstruction. The symptoms can easily be confused with those of bronchial asthma. We describe the case of a 40-year-old man with subglottic thyroid tissue and multinodular goiter who had been misdiagnosed earlier with bronchial asthma. After the correct diagnosis was established, the lesion was excised via an external approach. We also discuss the clinical features and management of intratracheal thyroid tissue.

RESUMEN

UNLABELLED: Nasopharyngeal tuberculosis is a rare disorder. It usually occurs via hematogenous and lymphatic spread from coexistent pulmonary or systemic tuberculosis, and by airway during respiration or bacillary expectoration. MATERIAL: we present a case of nasopharyngeal tuberculosis in a 50-year-old female patient presenting with a cervical mass and unilateral otitis media with effusion. The diagnosis was made by PCR and by isolation of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis on Loveinstein-Jensen cultures. CONCLUSION: Nasopharyngeal tuberculosis may present with cervical mass, unilateral otitis media with effusion, and may mimic nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Furthermore, nasopharyngeal carcinoma may harbor foci of granulomatous reaction, and this feature may confuse the pathologist. However PCR carries the advantage to detect the DNA of Mycobacterium tuberculosis before its growth on culture. Even though it is rare, this entity must be considered in the differential diagnosis of the nasopharyngeal masses.

RESUMEN

The mastoid and retro auricular thin skin graft has an excellent quality, and is easy to take. An important hydrotomu should be done in the retroauricular sulcus to obtain a plane surface that goes from the posterior face of the pinna to the skin over the mastoid surface. This plane surface is the donor site and allows the harvesting with the electric dermatome. The characteristics of this graft are: The graft have the same color of the face, the same operative field, yielding an unremarkable scar in the donor site. The thickness is limited to 3 tenths of mm, and his size to 6 x 4 cm approximately.

RESUMEN

Hemangiomas of the airway are benign vascular lesions that can involve any site from the nares to the tracheobronchial tree. Most of these lesions are seen in the subglottic area in infants. Supraglottic infantile hemangiomas are very rare. We report a case of supraglottic hemangioma in a 2-month-old boy who had been admitted to our hospital with inspiratory stridor and dyspnea. The hemangioma involved the left arytenoid and aryepiglottic fold. A tracheostomy was performed, and the patient was followed up endoscopically every 6 months thereafter The hemangioma disappeared when the child was 30 months old. Subsequently, a Montgomery T-tube was placed for 6 months to assist in maintaining normal breathing. The patient remains disease-free during ongoing follow-up. We also discuss the management strategies for infantile laryngeal hemangiomas.
