RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The RNA-binding motif single-stranded interacting protein 3 (RBMS3) is a constituent of the RNA-binding motif (RBM) protein family, which assumes a pivotal role in governing cellular biogenesis processes such as the cell cycle and apoptosis. Despite an abundance of studies elucidating RBMS3's divergent roles in the genesis and advancement of various tumors, its involvement in colon cancer remains enigmatic. METHODS: The present investigation employed data analysis from TCGA and GTEx to unveil that RBMS3 expression demonstrated a diminished presence in colon cancer tissues when juxtaposed with normal colon tissues. The effect of RBMS3 and LIM zinc finger domain 1 (LIMS1) on colon cancer was substantiated via animal models and cellular experiments. The connection between RBMS3 and LIM zinc finger domain 1 (LIMS1) was verified by molecular biology methods. RESULTS: The study conclusively ascertained that augmenting RBMS3 expression quells the proliferation, migration, and invasion of colon cancer cells. Furthermore, the inquiry unveiled a plausible mechanism through which RBMS3 impacts the expression of LIMS1 by modulating its mRNA stability. The investigation ascertained that RBMS3 inhibits the progression of colon cancer by regulating LIMS1. The inhibitory function of LIMS1 and RBMS3 is closely intertwined in colon cancer, with knocking down LIMS1 being able to rescue the inhibitory effect of RBMS3 overexpression on the functionality of colon cancer cell CONCLUSIONS: The discernments delineate RBMS3 as a novel suppressor of cancer via LIMS1, thereby bestowing fresh therapeutic possibilities and illuminating the intricacies of colon cancer.

RESUMEN

Objective: The aim was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis for assessing the effectiveness and safety of dietary polyphenol curcumin supplement on metabolic, inflammatory, and oxidative stress indices in patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS). Methods: A comprehensive search for clinical trials was conducted in the following scientific databases: PubMed, SCOPUS, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Web of Science, and China Biological Medicine. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating the efficacy and safety of curcumin supplement for MetS were identified. A random-effects meta-analysis was performed using inverse variance, and efficacy was expressed as mean difference (MD) with 95% confidence interval (CI). The metabolic syndrome markers that were evaluated in the present study included waist circumference (WC), fasting blood sugar (FBS), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-a), interleukin 6 (IL-6), C-reactive protein (CRP), ultrasensitive c-reactive protein (hsCRP), and malondialdehyde (MDA). By employing the Cochrane tool, RCTs were assessed for bias risk. Results: A total of 785 participants from 13 RCTs were included, with intervention durations ranging from 4 to 12 weeks. Compared with the control group, the curcumin group had positive effects on WC (MD = -2.16, 95% CI: -3.78 to -0.54, p = 0.009, seven studies), FBS (MD = -8.6, 95% CI: -15.45 to -1.75, p = 0.01, nine studies), DBP (MD = -2.8, 95% CI: -4.53 to - 1.06, p = 0.002, five studies), HDL-C (MD = 4.98, 95% CI: 2.58 to 7.38, p < 0.0001, eight studies), TNF-a (MD = -12.97, 95% CI: -18.37 to -7.57, p < 0.00001, two studies), CRP (MD = - 1.24, 95% CI: -1.71 to -0.77, p < 0.00001, two studies), and MDA (MD = -2.35, 95% CI: -4.47 to -0.24, p = 0.03, three studies). These improvements were statistically significant. Meanwhile, there was no significant improvement in SBP (MD = -4.82, 95% CI: -9.98 to 0.35, p = 0.07, six studies), TG (MD = 1.28, 95% CI: -3.75 to 6.30, p = 0.62, eight studies), IL-6 (MD = -1.5, 95% CI: -3.97 to 0.97, p = 0.23, two studies), or hsCRP (MD = -1.10, 95% CI: -4.35 to 2.16, p < 0.51, two studies). FBS, SBP, HDL-C, IL-6, CRP, hsCRP, and MDA had a relatively high heterogeneity. Conclusion: Curcumin exhibited promising potential in enhancing markers associated with metabolic syndrome, including inflammation. However, additional studies are required to confirm such findings since the included evidence is limited and has a relatively high heterogeneity. RESUMEN

Incoherent interfaces with large mismatches usually exhibit very weak interfacial interactions so that they rarely generate intriguing interfacial properties. Here we demonstrate unexpected strong interfacial interactions at the incoherent AlN/Al2O3 (0001) interface with a large mismatch by combining transmission electron microscopy, first-principles calculations, and cathodoluminescence spectroscopy. It is revealed that strong interfacial interactions have significantly tailored the interfacial atomic structure and electronic properties. Misfit dislocation networks and stacking faults are formed at this interface, which is rarely observed at other incoherent interfaces. The band gap of the interface reduces significantly to ~ 3.9 eV due to the competition between the elongated Al-N and Al-O bonds across the interface. Thus this incoherent interface can generate a very strong interfacial ultraviolet light emission. Our findings suggest that incoherent interfaces can exhibit strong interfacial interactions and unique interfacial properties, thereby opening an avenue for the development of related heterojunction materials and devices.

RESUMEN

Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) is present in hydraulic fracturing flowback and produced water. Degradation of DBP in aqueous by means of ozonation in ultrasonic cavitation-rotational flow interaction coupled-field (UC-RF coupled-field) was studied. The effect of ozone dosage, ozone intake flow, operating temperature, initial pH, DBP initial concentration, liquid flow rate, and ultrasonic power on the DBP removal was investigated. Results indicated that the DBP degradation rate was strongly influenced by the liquid flow rate and the ultrasonic power over the range investigated. HCO3- and Cl- revealed an inhibitory effect on the DBP removal. SO42- seemed to have no effect on DBP removal. The ozone utilization efficiencies in the UC-RF coupled-field were 2.77 and 1.13 times higher than those in the conventional microporous aeration (CMA) and rotating-flow microbubble aeration (RFMA), respectively. The DBP degradation rate was diminished in the presence of tert-butyl alcohol. Cavitation bubbles are considered as innumerable microreactors. Degradation of DBP by direct ozonation, hydroxyl radical (·OH) oxidation, high pressure, and high-temperature pyrolysis was demonstrated. Finally, a possible degradation pathway of DBP is obtained on the basis of the main reaction intermediates.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Students in the 9th grade of junior high school in Changsha were under a 75 d lockdown due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. After the resumption of school post-lockdown, the 9th grade students in Changsha faced the entrance physical examination test for senior high school. CASE SUMMARY: We report on 3 cases of occult fracture on the same site in adolescents of the same grade since resumption of school after the lockdown from the COVID-19 pandemic. Three students in the 9th grade of junior high school who were facing the physical examination in 2 wk were diagnosed with an occult fracture of the distal femur. CONCLUSION: It is recommended that the students, parents, education providers and policy makers should all pay attention to the physical exercise of students when the resumption of school after lockdown occurs and they should be aware of occult fractures when the adolescents have pain after physical exercise.

RESUMEN

Crystal defects play an important role in the degradation and failure of semiconductor materials and devices. Direct determination of band gap of defects is a critical step for clarifying how the defects affect the physical properties of semiconductors. Here, high-quality aluminum nitride (AlN) thin films were grown epitaxially on single-crystal Al2O3 substrates via pulsed laser deposition. The atomic structure and band gap of three types of inversion domain boundaries (IDBs) in AlN were determined using aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy and atomic-resolution valence electron energy-loss spectroscopy. It was found that the band gap of all of the IDBs reduces evidently compared to that of the bulk AlN. The maximum band gap reduction of the IDBs is 1.0 eV. First-principles calculations revealed that the band gap reduction of the IDBs is mainly due to the rise of pz orbital at the valence band maximum, which originates from the elongated Al-N bonds along the [0001] direction at the IDBs. The successful band gap determination of defects paves an avenue for quantitatively evaluating the effect of defects on the performance of semiconductor materials and devices.

RESUMEN

A study on the intensification of ozone mass transfer in rotational flow field and UC-RF coupled-field was conducted. Two important operational parameters namely liquid flow rate and ultrasonic power, were optimized with regard to the ozone mass transfer efficiency. Results showed that the mass transfer coefficient (KLa) increased with liquid flow rate (up to 14 L min-1) and ultrasonic power (up to 1000 W). The maximum KLa value (1.0258 min-1) was obtained with the UC-RF coupled-field. Moreover, the reinforcement of mass transfer efficiency was promoted by the rotational flow field and UC-RF coupled-field due to the increase in the ozone-liquid contact area, intensification of turbulence, acceleration of interface renewal, and extension of residence time. Ozone microbubbles rose in the reactor in a spiral manner. In addition, the microbubbles produced in the rotational flow field served as cavitation nucleus that helped to generate the cavitation effect. The effective degradation of di-butyl phthalate (DBP) confirmed that its removal was improved by the ozone-liquid mass transfer and the promotion of hydroxyl radicals (·OH) production. The synergistic effect of DBP degradation via ultrasound-enhanced ozonation was significant.

RESUMEN

A comprehensive assessment of a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) hollow fiber membrane contactor and ultrasound for intensifying ozone-liquid mass transfer was conducted simultaneously. The initial part of the study concentrates on the systematic analysis of the previous literature related to the reinforcement on the ozone-liquid mass transfer. In this paper, the introduction of a membrane contactor and ultrasound as a catalyzer that increased the mass transfer coefficient (K L a) may be partially attributed to the increase of the net surface area and the decrease of the mass transfer resistance, thus leading to the enhancement of the ozone mass transfer rate and acceleration of the ozone decomposition in solution. Results revealed that the maximum value of the K L a value was 0.7858 min-1 in the PTFE hollow fiber membrane contactor in the presence of the ultrasound, while only 0.5154 min-1 in a single ozone aeration at an intake flow of 300 L h-1, ozone dosage of 32.38 mg L-1 and operating temperature of 293.15 K. A 52.46% improvement of the K L a value was obtained in the presence of the ultrasound. In addition, the dosage of sodium chloride appeared to have a positive correlation with K L a, but a negative correlation with the concentration of dissolved ozone. The sulfolane destruction by ozonation, ultrasound and the combination between the ozonation and ultrasound were performed to further verify the enhancement of the ozone mass transfer performance. It has been established that the O3/US combined process was a promising method, giving the maximum degradation of sulfolane (96.5%) with the synergistic index as 2.41.

RESUMEN

Breast cancer is one of the most serious cancers worldwide, and chemotherapy resistance frequently drives cancer progression. Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) has a high recurrence rate and poor prognosis given its resistance to chemotherapy. In our previous study, we found a remarkable abnormal methylation modification of the PCDHGB7 gene in breast cancer. However, the roles of PCDHGB7 in the progression and treatment of breast cancer are unclear. In this study, we examined the effects of PCDHGB7 on the sensitivity of TNBC cells to carboplatin and investigated the underlying mechanism. By knocking down and overexpressing PCDHGB7 in HS578T and BT549 cells, we confirmed that PCDHGB7 increases TNBC cell chemosensitivity to carboplatin. Mechanistically, we found that PCDHGB7 negatively regulates the expression of HSPA9, uplifting its inhibition on P53 translocation and caspase-3 activation. Thus, we demonstrated that PCDHGB7 increases chemosensitivity of TNBC cells to carboplatin by inhibiting HSPA9 via inducing apoptosis. PCDHGB7 and HSPA9 represent potential therapeutic targets for chemosensitivity in breast cancer.

RESUMEN

Biomarkers, including DNA methylation, have shown a great potential for use in personalized medicine for BC and especially for the diagnosis of BC in developing countries. According to the bisulfite sequencing PCR in twelve specimens (BC and matched normal tissues), nine genetic probes were designed to detect the frequency of methylation of the promoters in a total of 302 paired cases of BC and matched normal breast tissues. Finally, a total of 900 serum samples were used to validate the use of these methylation biomarkers for clinical diagnosis of BC. A high frequency of promoter methylation of SFN, HOXA11, P16, RARß, PCDHGB7, hMLH1, WNT5a, HOXD13, and RASSF1a was observed in BC tissues. The methylation frequencies of HOXD13 and hMLH1 increased with the progression of BC. The methylation frequencies of HOXD13 and WNT5a were significantly higher in BC. We found that methylation modification-positive samples were most consistently associated with luminal BC. Finally, we confirmed that RASSF1a, P16, and PCDHGB7 displayed a significant sensitivity and specificity as diagnostic biomarkers for BC (P < 0.001), and a panel that combined these three genes displayed increased significance (AUC, 0.781; P < 0.001). These data suggest that epigenetic markers in serum can potentially be used to diagnose BC. The identification of additional BC-specific methylated genes would improve the sensitivity and specificity of this approach. This study could also indicate that different molecular subtypes of BC are caused by distinct genetic and epigenetic mechanisms.

RESUMEN

The combination of near infrared spectrum and pattern recognition methods has a wide application prospect in rapid and nondestructive supervision and management of drugs. The traditional identification methods regard the smallest error rate as the goal while the imbalance of classes is ignored. This makes the positive class is overwhelming covered by the negative class and reduces its effect for the classifier, so that the classification results tend to recognize the negative class correctly, which severely affects the identification accuracy. In this paper, we mainly studied the class imbalance problems of true or false drugs via infrared spectral data of its, and then propose a balance cascading and sparse representation based classification method (BC-SRC) by combining the Balance Cascading with SRC. We sampling majority samples from the majority class for several times, which has the same size as minority samples and the majority samples we sampled can contain all the majority class samples entirely (sampling times is ceiling the result of majority samples number divide minority samples number). We can get sets of results, and then obtain the final predict labels form those results. Experiments of three databases achieved on Matlab2012a shows that the method is effective. From the experimental results, it can be seen that the method is superior to the commonly used Partial Least Squares (PLS), Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) and BP. Particularly, for the imbalanced databases, when the imbalance factor is greater than 10, the proposed method has more stable performance with higher classification accuracy than the existing ones mentioned above.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To study the properties of the xenogeneic deproteinized cancellous bone used as a scaffold in the bone tissue engineering and its application to the spinal fusion of the lumbar intertransverse process in a goat. METHODS: The deproteinized bone was derived from an adult pig's femoral cancellous bone through the physical and chemical treatments. Its morphological features, constituting components, and biomechanical properties were examined by the scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and mechanical experimental instrument. The cell-material complex was observed under the inverted phase contrast microscope to evaluate the adhesion and the growth of the osteoblasts. The experimental model of the spinal fusion of the lumbar intertransverse process was produced in 12 male goats aged 6-8 months, which were divided into two groups. In Group A, the tissue engineered bone constructed by the xenogeneic deproteinized cancellous bone, the recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein 2, and the mesenchymal stem cells was used for the spinal fusion; however, in Group B the auto-ilium was used. The samples were harvested at 4, 8 and 12 weeks postoperatively, and a series of examinations were performed, including the radiography and the histomorphological assay. RESULTS: The deproteinized cancellous bone had a natural pore network system, with an aperture ranging in size from 200 to 500 microm, containing a main organic material of collagen and the inorganic material of hydroxyapatite. So, the deproteinized cancellous bone had a good mechanical strength and a good histocompatibility. In Group A, the X-ray examination at different timepoints postoperatively showed that at 4 weeks, the bridging areas of all the fusion sites were not clear, especially on the internal side; at 8 weeks, the upper and lower bridged parts had a narrowed gap, with formation of much continuous bony callus; at 12 weeks, a complete fusion occurred. In the early stage, the material density was slightly lower in Group A than in Group B, but at 12 weeks the density was almost the same in both the groups. Histological examination in the transplant area showed that at 4 weeks in Group A there was a new bone formation in a multipoint way; at 8 weeks, a "sandwich-shaped" new bone was crossed with the transplanting materials; and at 12 weeks, a medullary cavity was remodeled and a new cancellous bone was formed. The osteogenic process of the tissue engineered bone constructed by the xenogeneic deproteinized cancellous bone scaffold was almost the same as the auto-ilium osteogenesis. CONCLUSION: The xenogeneic deproteinized cancellous bone is a good material in the bone tissue engineering, which can be used as an osteogenesis scaffold and provide a stable environment for revascularization and osteoblastic differentiation.
